I need this promotion. But if I win, what will I lose?
I've done everything right in nearly a decade as a Marine, but thanks to stuff outside of my control, it's all gonna come crashing down if I don't pick up a rank soon.
Enter recruiting duty. My one chance to kill it and earn the promotion that will save my job.
There's just one thing standing in my way. Her.
Hot-tempered, pigheaded, and frustratingly gorgeous Sergeant Nora Cannon is gunning for the same promotion. Shots were fired the moment we met and I can tell neither one of us is going down without a fight.
The only problem is, when we’re not fighting, sparks are flying. And I can’t get her fierce attitude and cunning smile out of my mind. But I can’t afford to let her distract me. I can’t afford to let her win.
Or, can I? Because as much as I don't want to lose my job, I don't want to lose her, either.

I’m loving learning so much about military life especially on this Veteran’s day! That’s the wonderful thing about reading. I read for relaxing and entertainment but I learn so much along the way. Each of the characters are so individualistic. I appreciate the author's creativity and attention to detail. This was lovely story and so well written!
It always feels like Christmas when a favorite author releases a new book. I get all excited, let out a little squeal, and do a happy dance around my room. Not too sure my neighbors appreciate me doing that at 4am but come on guys! I can't help it! There's nothing better than diving into a new book!
Y'all. I'm not going to lie. I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this book. If I'm being completely honest, I was a bit hesitant. I have loved Hunter from the moment we first met him and knew it would take someone pretty amazing to capture his heart. But it never even crossed my mind that it would be another Marine. Don't ask me why I never thought about it because I have no clue! But in hindsight, it's actually pretty perfect.
I absolutely adored Nora and Hunter and found myself routing for them from the very beginning. They got off to a pretty rocky start, but I loved watching their friendship grow, watching them open up to each other, watching them learn who the other is and what makes them tick. They love deeply, are fiercely loyal, know what they want in life and are not afraid to go after it. Add to that their explosive chemistry and you have the makings of an amazing book!
I am really loving this series! It's a lot of fun and giving me that much needed break from reality amidst all this craziness called life. There's nothing better than curling up in my big, comfy chair and diving into a great book. I'm looking forward to reading Tess and Logan's story. Y'all know how much of a sucker I am when it comes to single parent tropes. And the best part? Sadie is the perfect age! I cannot wait to see her wrap Logan around her little pinky. Hehe.
I seriously can't get enough of Ms. Mastorakos's books. Y'all. She's seriously amazing! I always know I'm in for a treat when I pick up one of her books. She just has this way of kidnapping me and holding me hostage until the very end. I don't know about you, but I LOVE when that happens!
And of course I can't forget my casting. I know I say this a lot but.... I. Am. In. Love! What do you think?!
Another great book by Jess Mastorakos! I seriously have loved everything she has published! Dual perspective romance books like this are one of my favorites to read. I really love hearing the thought processes, etc. of both characters. I didn’t really click so well with Nora but loved Hunter and loved how their story developed. One reason I love series like this is crossovers and I loved having some of the San Diego marines in this one! Definitely read this book!
Another great book by this author! Each book is getting better, and I love Sgt Nora Cannon.
We all have reasons that drive our decisions. Nora and Hunter both end up in the Recruiter class in San Diego for different reasons, but lines get blurred over the next few months. The poor Gatorade that is sacrificed in their first meeting is the beginning of great banter.
Hunter and Nora challenge each other, have great dialog. And the build-up to their friendship and then more is excellent reading. I like how they are focused on their own goals, but together they are a team and see other solutions.
I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes to Marine recruitment, the topic of harassment, and a few old friends making cameos.
Thank you to the author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
Heartbeats in Honolulu is the fifth book in the Kailua Marines series by Jess Mastorakos. This is the story of Sgt. Hunter Wilson and Sgt. Nora Cannon who meet while undertaking a recruiting course as their next step in their Marines career. They both have different reasons for being there. Both have different outcomes they want after their course is finished. I enjoyed the way Jess Mastorakos built up the relationship between Hunter and Nora from almost enemies to friends. It was a lot of fun to read. There were a couple of twists I did not see coming which I prefer to reading a predictable story. There will be one more book in this series titled Christmas in Kailua. Recommend this book and the whole series.
This was a beautiful story of two people concentrating on their careers. Hunter is an absolute gentleman and Nora wants to be seen as a Marine. They both need to do this recruiting job to their absolute best but for different reasons. I liked that a few specific things were addressed in this story. First, woman can be Marines and be a good Marine. Second, the harassment the women get because of it. I am glad that Hunter's parents taught him that no means no and he backed off immediately. I'm glad the story showed what lengths recruiters will go to to get their numbers. I love, love, love these stories. I hope there is a plan to go beyond number 6. They are so full of reality meets romance!
A female Marine gets her HEA A GREAT read with realistic Marine-life situations. The author demonstrates her knowledge of the world of the Marine Corp and brings to light the real struggles of a female in active duty. This couple has to fight for each other and their place in the Marines. I love their chemistry and love-hate interactions. Their encounters are entertaining and make you fall in love with the characters. The group of friends represents the Marine family dynamics and their support for one another demonstrates the author's talent to tell a story that hooks you and reels you in through the very end. I can’t wait to read the next book. * I received a copy of this book from the author and gladly chose to provide a review.
This was a fun enemies to lovers romance. Heartbeats in Honolulu is the 5th book in Jess Mastorakos' Kauila Marines series. I had a harder time connecting with Nora (we just have different personalities), but I ended up really liking her. I was stoked to see that Hunter was going to get a book so I couldn’t wait to read it. Anyway, Heartbeats in Honolulu was even better than I had hoped! Hunter needs this next promotion in order to stay in the Marines and so he has no choice but to kill it at recruiting duty. However, when he meets a girl who is vying for the same position, shots are fired. Nora Cannon is the only thing standing in the way of Hunter's promotion, but when they aren’t fighting, sparks start to fly. Will Nora and Hunter be able to look past their jobs and first impressions for a relationship to grow? Nora was a complex character, and I liked reading about her grow. She loved her sister and niece fiercely, and she would do anything for them. But she also had to learn that she couldn’t do everything for her sister. It was fun to read about Nora learning to relax and falling for Hunter. But I also loved how she didn’t change for him. She stayed her awesome strong self. She learned how to let people in, but she was still stubborn and ready to defend those in need. Hunter was at times a hothead, but he loved fiercely. He protected those he cared about. I was super excited to read Hunter’s book, and I felt for him from the beginning. I knew him better, and I so wanted him to find his happy ending. I felt bad for him as he butted heads with Nora, but I also wanted to cheer when things started to look up for him. It was really cool to learn about the recruiting process and see Hunter champion for kids who wanted to be Marines. Hunter had to figure out if he would be okay if he didn’t make sergeant, who he would be if he didn’t reach his goals. Hunter and Nora had such fiery enemies to lovers romance. They were both stubborn people, but they also fit each other perfectly. They understood each other and it was sweet to read about them helping each other out. The side characters really added to the story. Their boss was really nice, but I really didn't like Cash, one of their coworkers. I also adored seeing Hunter interacting with Kate and seeing old characters. Heartbeats in Honolulu was an awesome attention to the series and I am excited for the last book, but I will be sad to see these groups of friends go. I enjoyed the interactions between the characters and the storyline was really interesting. I would definitely recommend Heartbeats in Honolulu. It was a great book! Heartbeats in Honolulu is a clean, enemies to lovers Marine romance.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.
HEARTBEATS IN HONOLULU is a standalone read with a happy ending. There are no sexy scenes or colorful language. Any age from teen to granny can read and enjoy. The story is set mostly in Hawaii but starts out in California where the main characters are in school to be recruiters. Hunter was stationed in Hawaii so he hopes to be stationed there when school is over. There are lots of places he could go and he is okay with that. His main goal is to get a promotion for being a top recruiter. He needs that promotion or the Marines will put him out of the Corp. He has to have the promotion before he hits his 10th year and that year is coming up.
Nora is a female Marine. She is just what you would expect. She is tough, rough and can hold her own. She feels she has to be that way since some male Marines think it is okay to harass her or say crude things behind her back. If she is friendly, they consider it flirting. She can't win in that department but she has a clean record and she intends to keep it that way. Hunter is really attracted to her but she seems to hate him. He can't seem to say the right thing. Nothing he says sits well with her. She is just hard to figure to him.
These two go head to head on more than one occasion. Women being sexually harassed in the military has been in the news quite a bit. Lots is being done to get it under control and stopped. They still have a long way to go. This story hits on that topic and has a very satisfactory ending. I really enjoyed that. It is a really good story and Hunter tries to come to grips with the fact that he might not be a career Marine. Nora is working hard to help her sister Tess and her 18 month old daughter. Lots of drama with a lot of fun. It is a good story and I definitely recommend it.
I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 8/14/2021
Another sweet romance hit from our Heartbeats in Honolulu series, this time featuring TWO Marines, which I loved.
It took me longer than usual to get into the story. Hunter has been fun to watch on the sidelines of the other romance stories. It was wonderful to have Nora come on seen as a Marine herself! But, I just couldn't grasp her attitude towards expecting to win an opportunity to stay in her hometown because suddenly her family dynamics changed and she "needed" to be there for her little sister. I also wasn't sure how much I was rooting for the "power couple" - though the task of recruiting was certainly more effective when tagged teamed, I kinda felt like Nora was giving something up and just helping her boyfriend with his homework, so to speak.
But as the book turned into more about their relationship and the little things that made it tick, I couldn't help but smile at how Hunter was that typical guy that loves getting a reaction from a fiesty woman (SUCH a guy thing! lol) and of course, I LOVED Nora's fiestiness! I always love the Marine's love interest's sass, this was the best by far at giving her Marine a run for his money! I also was glad to see the issue of workplace harassment handled with dignity. It's going to happen anywhere, not just the USMC, so I appreciate knowing how Marines handle the issue when it arises.
I'm excited to see how this series wrapped up - I mean, it's always a bit bittersweet, like a duty station move - but you know the USMC world is small and this isn't the last we'll see of these HI guys and gals!
Nora had a hardened exterior and could be snarky. She hated how some male Marines saw and treated her as a female Marine and she was determined to stay focused and get what she wanted. She decided to pursue becoming a Marine recruiter as a means to getting what she wanted but unfortunately, that led her to Hawaii instead of the San Diego area like she wanted. She was committed to help take care of her younger sister and little niece but how was she going to do that when she was in Hawaii and they were in California?
Hunter needed this promotion and soon or he would be "dumped" out of the Marines. He knew he could be a good recruiter so he was determined to earn a spot that would get him a promotion and help him to stay in the Marines. His first encounter with Nora wasn't stellar and neither were the next few but eventually, he was able to show her who he really was and the kind of man he was. He was interested in Nora but she was as prickly as a porcupine; or at least that is what she wanted everyone else to see. She NEVER dated a Marine. But Hunter started to get under her skin and the feeling was mutual, it seemed.
This was a clean, well written romance that is the fifth book in the Kailua Marines series but can be read as a standalone. Although, it is fun to pick up the story of some of the other characters from the series.
I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.
Jess Mastorakos must be stopped. Because I will spend all of my money on her books if she doesn't. In all seriousness, she has become an autobuy author for me and Heartbeats in Honolulu was another stunner.
Why have one Marine, when you can have two? And no, I don't mean some love triangle where our leading lady wants two guys but can only have one. I mean our leading lady is also a Marine. This was the first dual Marine couple in either series and it definitely added a fun new dynamic. Nora feels she has to portray herself in a specific way to be taken seriously as a female Marine and Hunter really does put his foot in his mouth frequently when they first meet. This results in crazy back and forth banter and arguing, which really turns into some crazy chemistry. Both are seeking the same promotion for each of their own personal reasons. Will their feelings and chemistry win out?
Also, the San Diego Marines!! Guys, when Hunter met Matt (of Away from You) at recruiting school, I was practically squealing! And then Hawk! I was so excited to see these two series collide. Never fear, you can read one without the other and not feel lost. But it really did feel like running into old friends. Honestly, I cannot recommend these books enough.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and I'm leaving an honest and voluntary review.
I really enjoyed this book. Nora and Hunter are really good characters. I loved how they were dedicated to their own careers, yet made time for each other.
One of my favorite parts of the book is how they slowly met and formed a bond. Even though there was a lot of tension and animosity, rightfully so, they got through it. I loved how underneath the tough exterior Hunter is a big teddy bear. He is a genuinely nice guy and that is something I loved. He was there for Nora. Even though he is an alpha male, he still respects Nora so much.
Nora is one of my favorite heroines in the contemporary romance genre. Her spunk and ability to care for her sister, Tess, is amazing. I loved how family oriented she is. She might be a spitfire, but you understand why. Also, I loved understanding how female Marines are treated. This book gave me a lot of insight into the life that is commonly dominated by men.
The romance is so sweet. I loved the slow-burn. The chemistry between Nora and Hunter is awesome. The kissing scenes are the best. But, most importantly, is the respect they build. They care for each other and there are many hilarious scenes. This book made me giggle at the end and you will understand why.
In summary, I really loved this book. I highly recommend it. It is one of my favorite military romances out there.
Hunter and Nora stole my heart! Hunter, about to hit the 10 year mark as a Marine, desperately needs to earn a promotion to Staff Sergeant in order to stay in the military. Nora, also a Marine, is looking to stay in San Diego to help take care of her younger sister and toddler niece. Both enter recruiter school, where sparks fly, and not the romantic kind. They butt heads at almost every turn, until they’re paired up for an assignment.
Once they graduate recruiter school, it’s off to Hawaii, where Nora decides to work for the meritorious promotion to Staff Sergeant in order to move back to San Diego. What will happen when they finally admit their feelings for each other? What will Nora do when she discovers she and Hunter are both working for the same promotion?
I absolutely loved this story. I couldn’t put it down, and look forward to Tess’ upcoming story.
On a different note: Nora’s description of being a female Marine reflects the same issues many of my female active duty friends have experienced. It’s sad, but it was encouraging to read about their leadership actually taking the accusations seriously.
I was provided an advance copy of the book in exchange for my review.
I've read every single Marine romance Jess has written, but the spin with a female Marine was eye-opening and refreshing! Although I assumed harassment on the level Nora received was "typical", I guess the reality of life for women in the military isn't as openly discussed like in this story. We as women just "know" it happens everywhere (and I've seen it displayed in an office workspace, so why would the military be any different?) but... hmm. You just don't realise the gravity of the situation until someone points it out to you. Kudos to Jess for writing about this serious two-tier societal issue we live in daily.
Loved Nora and her struggle with seeming 'prickly', and her huge heart for her sister Tess. Without even navigating a Marine world (or relationship), she's got plenty on her plate.
Hunter was a blast as usual, although I enjoyed seeing his more serious side. Poor guy had so much pressure to deal with. I loved the unexpected way his "job issue" was finally resolved.
Two Marines competing against each other with a twist.
Nora and Hunter are both Marines who attend recruiting school together. Hunter had previously met Nora at the Exchange and assumed she was someone’s girlfriend or sister. It had not occurred to him she was a Marine and Nora does not take too kindly to him. They end up competing against each other for a promotion. Nora wants the promotion so she can stay in the same area to help her sister and niece. Hunter wants the promotion so he can stay in the Marines.
Nora and Hunter are frenemies until they really get to know one another. There are twists and turns in this book along with funny banter between the two. The book also deals with sexism against women Marines.
Marines from the other books are mentioned in this one. It is like keeping up with your family.
Heartbeats in Honolulu is interesting, funny, and a clean Marine romance with an unexpected ending. I highly recommend this book. It is a standalone; however, I suggest you read the series so you will know the background on the other characters.
I love this book and this author. It is a clean read. I am always excited to get a book to read by Jess Mastorakos. I always want to move it to the top of my TBR list.
Nora and Hunter but get sent to recruiter school in San Diego. They rock the class by the way. Hunter seems to have a knack for saying the wrong thing to Nora from their first meeting at the sunglasses stand to spilling blue gatorade on her as she goes to pay for her glasses. They both are goal focused, Both get sent to Honolulu which is what Hunter wanted but not what Nora wanted. They are both after the same promotion for different reasons. Can the look past their first impressions and their goals to make room for a relationship? Grab the book today to find out.
I receive complimentary books for review from publishers, publicists, and/or authors. I am not required to write positive reviews. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255
I always love when a book has a strong female lead character and Sergeant Nora Cannon is as fierce and no nonsense as they come! The banter between her and Hunter had me cracking up the whole way throughout the book. They are so similar which of course gives them a lot of material to use as they joke their way into falling in love. I absolutely loved how supportive they were of one anothers careers and how much of a momma bear Nora is with her sister Tess. It reminded me a lot of how Hunter is with his sister, Kate.
This is the first book I've read with a female Marine and it really opened my eyes on the things they go through just trying to serve their country.
As always with Jess's books, I loved being able to catch up with the other Marines and being able to follow along with their stories as they grow on the sidelines.
Standalone (but I also highly recommend the series as a whole). Happily ever after. No sex scenes or graphic language.
Heartbeats in Honolulu is the fifth book in the Kailua Marines series by Jess Mastorakos. This story takes off where the book four leaves off so it is best to read these in order.
This is a quick to read sweet military romance. This story touches on some of the stresses a military person has in order to stay in the military for a career. Hunter has to excel at being a recruiter to stay in the military.
I’ve enjoyed reading this story, as well as the rest in the series. It is a well written story with fun characters. This is a story of opposites that attract and how they adjust to get along. Hunter likes to goof around, while Nora is so serious. I enjoyed reading how even though they both had the same goal in mind for themselves, they worked together. This is a good clean romance story to get lost in.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author, this is my honest review.
I loved the fierce competition between marines Hunter and Nora. Both needed a promotion at work, so the verbal sparring came in the form of witty and sassy dialogue. The chemistry was intense, and when they finally kissed - swoon!
Written in dual POV, my favorite, Hunter and Nora had distinctive voices and strong characters. It was fun to see them fall in love while trying to maintain their tough marine personas. Especially Nora. The author did a great job of portraying how women are often treated in the workplace, and I like how the issues got resolved.
It's always great to touch base with characters from previous books in a series, though this book can totally be read as a stand-alone. I can't wait to read Tess's story next.
Heartbeats in Honolulu is the fifth book in Jess Mastorakos Kailua Marines Series. This book features Hunter and Nora who meet at recruiter training. The initial meeting is definitely not okay in Nora’s mind. As a female Marine, she believes she has to prove herself constantly and does not enjoy attention from male marines, especially a flirting Hunter who thinks she is visiting a marine graduating from Basic. Sparks fly throughout the book as the two are paired up for a contest. There are several appearances from Mills, who was featured in the San Diego Marines Series. I enjoyed this book although I missed all the other marines and their antics until they showed up at the end. Another excellent read.
Hunter and Nora were so much fun to read. Hunter is a fun loving goofball that can't be taken too seriously. Nora is... well... prickly.
While I struggled to likening initially, I enjoyed her transformation. She did a lot of growing. She had to trust her sister. She had to trust Hunter. She had to trust Gunny. And she did. And was rewarded by blossoming, and healthy, relationships from it!
Hunter had to come to peace with things out of his control. And in the process, dare I say, he found a niche he wasn't quite expecting in recruiting.
BTW, military recruiting sounds like hell.
Another lovely piece by Ms Mastorakos. Again, my favorite Parton her stories are the authenticity she brings.
What a great read! The other books in the series have been stories between someone in the military and someone outside. However in this one, the leading man AND lady are Marines. And, boy, is Nora Cannon quite the pistol! Of course, as a female Marine, she has more to prove than her male counterparts and she is not going to let a pretty-boy wreck the goals she's set for her career.
I LOVED the banter in the story. It felt real and helped build the tension between the characters. This story stands alone but keeps in touch with characters from the rest of the series which is really fun! Another wonderful installment of the Kailua Marines!
I enjoyed reading this addition to the Kailua Marines series. Heartbeats in Honolulu features Nora and Hunter, both of whom are marines. I especially enjoyed the sniping and banter between them. I would have preferred to hear a little less of how tough Nora was, but that was only a minor issue. I love that justice was meted out so very well in the story. There's a great HEA, and the epilogue introduces what I hope is the next main character. I would definitely read more of Jess Mastorakas's works and would recommend not only this book, but the entire series. I received a complimentary copy and this is my opinion of this well-written book.
Hunter has done everything right in nearly a decade as a Marine, but thanks to stuff outside of his control, it's all gonna come crashing down if he doesn't promote. Enter recruiting duty. His one chance to kill it and earn the promotion that will save his job. There's just one thing standing in his way. Her. Hot-tempered, pigheaded, and frustratingly gorgeous Sergeant Nora Cannon is gunning for the same promotion. Shots were fired the moment they met.
Classic enemies to lovers. This book was so great! Loved the competition, the drama with coworkers, everything. As always you won't regret reading this series. I am excited to read about her sister next!
Hunter is in a bind in his career. Unless he gets a promotion, he’s out. So, he takes the assignment to become a recruiter. If he gets meritoriously promoted, he can stay in and live his dream. If not, he may have to go back to his family’s farm. That would be a no-go for him.
Nora wants the promotion just as badly but for different reasons. Her sister has made some poor decisions and Nora wants to move back to San Diego to be able to help her and her daughter. With them working toward the same position, can they also fight their attraction?
Nora and Hunter are both in recruiter school in California. They butt heads from the start and then both get sent to Hawaii. They are both competing for the same promotion and have personal reasons they want the position. Nora always tries to keep Hunter at a distance because of the way females in the Marines are treated. But once they spend more time together, they realize they have developed feelings for each other.
Thank you to Jess Mastorakos and Bookfunnel for an ARC of this incredible book. This is a clean and very easy-to-read series. Such touching stories. Love them all.
Another great book in this marine series! You definitely can’t go wrong with a book from Jess Mastorakos! This is a stand alone novel with HEA. With being part of the series, you see people from the previous books in this which is great. This book is about Nora and Hunter. Both are competing for the same position in recruiting: Hunter so he can stay in the Marines and Nora so that she can be closer to her sister and her niece. Sparks fly between Nora and Hunter right from the beginning. Loved their story! You will definitely fall in love with this authors characters!
4.5***** stars. Nora and Hunter meet at the Exchange where he mistakes her for a significant other, not the Marine she is like him. They meet up again at recruiting school. He needs this duty to get a promotion to stay in the Marine Corp. She needs to excel to prove women can do the job as well as a man. Nice end to what I believe might be the end of this series. It focuses mainly on this characters and minimally on others from previous books. This was another really good story and it was an enjoyable read. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book
