All Theo wanted was to make her happy. But when his girlfriend finds out about his animal and dumps him for something he can't control, he's left shattered and spiraling. He refuses to trust humans again and fights against his crew who only wants to help him. So when a sassy human draws his animal's attention he's determined to stay away from the beautiful distraction. At least until an enemy of the crew targets her. He needs to decide if his distrust of humans is worth losing the one person who can make him smile.
Lily has been the weird girl all her life. Outgoing, eccentric, and just a little odd. She had trouble making friends because her off the wall personality was a little much to deal with. When a mixed crew stumbled into her stall at the fair, she'd hoped she finally found people who spoke her language. But one sexy as hell silver eyed jerk seemed determined to drive her away. So when he showed up to make amends, she knew better than to trust it. But she couldn't seem to stay away from him. And when she discovers the truth about what he is, she’s beyond fascinated. Now, as a rival wolf pack stalks the crew, she needs to decide if she's willing to face the risk of being in his life or escape while she still has the chance.
A.F. Montoya is a daydreamer turned writer who writes contemporary mafia romances. She’s been reading romance novels since her mother bought her one as a joke when she was a teen and now writes them and shares them with her mother, much to her chagrin. She enjoys reading in her spare time and supporting other authors. When she isn’t writing or thinking about new book ideas she is supporting her husband and kids.
It’s a rehash of B1, to the point you wonder why? FMC, MMC, settings, and family drama. Sooo, the author did improve on some parts from B1, but she also majorly #ucked up the parts that did work in it.
Sassy ‘not like other girls’, ‘pick me’, [need to stick a pin in her bubble head] happy personality, FMC.
In B1 the reason for her having few relationships, difficulties, was more than just how ‘special’, different she was. She was a dominant brat who liked to stir up shit. Plus issues with her animal. Very, very cool. It worked. Here, it’s just cause she’s ‘special’, everyone is jealous, weirded out, mean.
In B1 she was mature enough, in relation to her personality, had a business, knew what she wanted, treated what needed to be serious [ to hell with the rest]. This one was all over the place, coming across as Very young, scatter brained, and shallow. She meets a guy at the fair who she believes is a jerk, who shows no sign of interest in her, treats her poorly, but she thinks is gorgeous. No connection to her, friends, work, just random. So naturally she chases him. She wants to help him smile [cause he’s hotter when he does]. 😳 MMC is sulking over a breakup, taking it out on those who are doing no wrong, and takes forever to deal, and always places the blame elsewhere. Very young.
In B1 FMC meets a guy she feels bad for because he’s too big to go on the rides and is left isolated from the group they are both with. She tries to keep him company. He’s a jerk, but it’s because he’s insecure and defensive after being repeatedly treated poorly by numerous people. He admits in so many words, same day, and apologises. His reasons are valid, and he eventually gets past it with decent treatment [a bit slow, but forgivable].
Like B1, we start at a fair. Like B1 FMC is ‘helping’ MMC. Both MMC’s have Jerk-ish behaviour. In B1 we move on quickly and start getting to know the characters, but go to sex too quickly. Here, the jerk act goes on too long, the girl chases inappropriately, and for weak reasons. She eventually stands up to him, but again, gives in, ‘cause he’s hot’.
Okay, college girl- 6 mth relationship, fun, shallow, millennial selfish, is still growing up. Dumps her boyfriend after finding out he’s a wolffie, cause she doesn’t want the lifestyle, has dreams, plans, that don’t fit [shifters still in hiding]. Handles it poorly, but isn’t deliberately mean. She’s kinda low value, high maintenance, in other words young and spoilt, but not evil.
MMC acts like he lost the love of his life, will be ‘alone forever’ ahwhooo, girl is evil, entirely her fault, blah blah. Treats everyone around him like shit, ‘because of her’. She broke his heart, callous, did it cause of his animal, thinks he’s a monster, can’t trust humans… pathetic angst goes on for 1/2-2/3 of book. There were no words about his animal, only the life required because of it. Never called him a monster, or any other words [relationship happened B1, breakup B2, asshole B3].
She handled it so wrong, he had a right to be hurt. But she wasn’t a bitch, had a right to her dreams. She didn’t deliberately treat anyone badly, he did, but he got all the sympathy, cause-saddd. He was just as young and stupid, but we’re suppose to side solely with him? You’d think they’d been living with each other and were on the verge of proposal… 🙄🥱
Both books MMC’s were alone, sad, etc. In B1 was justified and we felt for him, not here.
Shifter Family drama. In B1 the assholes don’t get any real comeuppance, consequences, or even recognition for their crap, assaults, and bullying, by the other good guys. MMC is judged unfairly, labeled, and not given the support and friendship he deserves. Even at the end, he still doesn’t get a fully satisfying resolution.
Here, the MMC gets support, recognition, and mostly a satisfying resolution. Definite improvement.
I really like Theo in the first 2 books, but not here. I found this FMC annoying, juvenile, hypocritical, basically still growing up, and as such, not a good lead for a ‘mated for life-done-and-dusted-HEA’ type of story. These leads should be partying, exploring, moving in with each other, with the option of breaking up if it doesn’t work. Basically the narrative of the first girl.
Since all these books are linked, and I want to read the last 2, I pushed through this, but it wasn’t enjoyable for me. I’d say better suited to a younger audience, but the whole, essentially ’married’ trope doesn’t fit…??
Edit: I should add there were some sweet, funny, loveable moments, they were just overshadowed for me by all the rest. It was a constant rant in my head any time the first girl was brought up, or ‘FMC’s ‘specialness’ 😅
The catnip of a jerky hero who runs up against a sunnily chaotic heroine and hurts her feelings. Then he has to do better, and be better, and she has to decide if she's gonna trust him with the heart that nobody else has ever been careful enough for. It all just screams 'keep me awake at night' and I ate up every single page. And the feeling I get when a hero becomes the protector of the woman he hurt earlier, when he finally understands, just can't be rivaled. It's so good. And Lily is everything here, weird, at least mid-sized, and so soft under her sass. Theo has his work cut out for him, but in the end, I was thrilled for the two of them to find happiness together.
The more I read the more I'm getting into this series! I love this shifter Village and all the problems that are coming with it! The best thing is this author is so talented😘I can't wait to get my hands on more!
