Retired US Army officer Tessa Treslow has settled in with her Aunt Edna in her hometown of New Oslo, Idaho. After the disasters of the previous fall, Tessa and her family are back on their feet as they start a new dream venture: a vehicle restoration business, "BOSS—Band of Sisters Services, call the She-canics."
Tessa and the enticing local math teacher, Nick Hunt, are also working together to organize a charity run during the New Oslo Pioneer Days festival. All seems to be going well... until Tessa finds a dead body in the town park!
The murder victim is a stranger to their small town, who claimed that she was the illegitimate cousin of Tessa's best friend, Deputy Petunia "Freddie" Frederickson. The victim's bloody finger is pointing to a mark on the veterans' honor roll sign, circling the names of Freddie and her grandfather. Complicating matters, Freddie was witnessed in an altercation with the woman just before her death, and it was Freddie's knife found at the scene.
In order to help her best friend, Tessa and Aunt Edna search for the real identity of the victim. Was she actually a long-lost family member? Who would want her dead? And what was she doing in New Oslo? Tessa is determined to find out... even if the answers lead her straight into the crosshairs of a killer!
As a military brat, veteran and military spouse (retired), I've moved more times than I have fingers to count on! I only recently broke my record of six consecutive years at one address.
Somewhere along the way, I discovered that I could make other people laugh with my writing. I enjoy reading to escape from the real world, and hope to give you the same with my stories.

I am sad to see this book end. I loved reading it and can’t wait for the next book in the series. Plus, this is the one where I am named in the credits because I got to pick a character name! Which I think she may be a recurring role in the series! My heart is overjoyed… thank you Rosalie and thank you for your service!!
Aunt Edna has to be my idol. I love her stubbornness and how ornery she is! We get to see more of the BOSS business taking shape as they got the foundation poured and did a bit more work on the structure. Aunt Edna was like a kid in a candy shop and even helped them with the work.
We hear more about Nick, Tessa’s new boyfriend/taking it SLOOOOWWW boyfriend. At this pace a snail is faster. 🤣But all is revealed why and you won’t be disappointed. I can’t wait until everyone meets my character. She is a hoot and I envy her flexibility.
We also hear more about Freddie’s family background and her grandfather may he rest in peace. Oh and Summer (Tessa’s niece) comes to stay for a few weeks and ends up getting smack dab in the middle of the murder investigation.
You know, I just thought of something…. I think this series reminds me of Cabot Cove. Where it’s a small town with lovely people who have to deal with a murder in their town and instead of Jessica you have Tessa and Aunt Edna working to solve the case. I absolutely love this series, I fell in love with it with the first book way before I was honored with naming a character. The writing is phenomenal and you have humor, romance, murder and mystery - what more could you ask for?
If you like cozy mysteries you have to check out this series. Plus you will get see the name of the character I came up with!
Home Is Where the Murder Is Earns 5/5 Red Shirts … Clever & Compelling Gem!
Teresa Treslow, a retired lieutenant colonel, is always ready to help the community, especially when it benefits her favorite veteran support group, and although she regrets participating in the run, it and the rest of the events were a big success. But, the day wasn’t without its conflict. A woman, a stranger to many in the town, revealed she is the biological granddaughter of Boyd Nicholas Frederickson from a wartime liaison with a French nurse. Freddie, the town’s deputy sheriff Petunia Frederickson, Boyd’s only granddaughter, and Tessa’s BFF, is furious, calling the woman a liar. The woman, Wendy Grove, stands by her claim, even adds a shove to punctuate her determination, and throwing who inherits Papa Boyd’s property into question. Until … the woman’s body is found and Freddie nearby: “I didn’t do it! I didn’t do it!”
Hometown Hit! Rosalie Spielman has added a second engaging cozy to Hometown Mysteries with a surprise paternity claim, a challenged will, a friend in distress, a young woman whose identity is curious, and a murder. When a family claim from a wartime hook-up threatens the easy disposition of Papa Boyd’s will, it seems Freddie has the most compelling motive along with opportunity (a meeting request) and means (her multi-tool) making her the prime suspect. However, details uncovered, or leaked with friendly intentions, reveal shocking identities and unexpected connections … I literally gasped multiple times! The final arrest was not without its perilous moments and lots of finger pointing; definitely a nail-biter. I enjoyed the military aspect with Tessa’s physical therapy, mental health visits, and her tragic experiences and emotional survival along with many veterans in the community. I was entertained by Tessa’s multi-generational partnership with her aunt and very eager niece with online searches, old photographs, remnants of an old Triple-C (Civilian Conservation Corp.) site, and a tale decades long past. All makes for an excellent read, and high on my list for 2023 honors.
Romance is a nice component for which I find necessary in my cozy mysteries, and if the relationships have a rough road, it’s added drama. Tessa is slowly moving on from the death of her fiancé in Iraq, but the loss effects her willingness to eagerly engage another. Nick Hunt, with his own post-military issues, is a strong candidate, but oddly Tessa senses he’s cooled off, and although recent revelations may explain some of that, they have greatly complicated their relationship. There is the former high school boyfriend, now, Sheriff Joe Eriksson, and although he may be an outlier in the situation, he could still be in the mix. So much to build on, unless murder gets in the way!
Disclosure: I received an ARC from Gemma Halliday Publishing. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.
I am really enjoying this series. Tessa and family make for interesting reading. I love her relationship with her aunt and their combined business, this book introduces her 17 year old niece, who is spending some of her summer vacation with them while also looking at a nearby university. Unfortunately after a successful marathon, that Nick and Tessa organized to raise money for local veterans groups, as part of the local Pioneer Days celebration, her best friend Freddie gets into an argument with a women claiming to be her long lost cousin. When the woman is found dead with Freddie knive stuck in her chest and Freddie in shock and covered in blood, things get very intense. Can Tessa help clear her friend? Who was this woman really, and what was she doing in town? How does Tessa's friend Nick figure into everything? It's definitely worth a read to find out.
I'm loving this series. In book 2, Tessa's childhood bestie is accused of murder, and even though Tessa knows she should trust local law enforcement to find the killer, she can't resist sleuthing on her own... of course with the help of Aunt Edna and Summer (her niece). We learn more about the Prunn sisters in this book (they're still sharp as tacks), plus Freddie's background. Magnus the moose makes his appearance (love him!) and we learn that Jailbait Jesse knows her way around a shotgun. :) This book can be read out of order, but I recommend reading book 1 first so you don't miss a single moment.
Unpredictable twists, a unique story, and a variety of interesting characters will keep you guessing until the very end. Furthermore, the veteran and PTSD aspects make this book unique and relevant. It's one of my favorite series, and I can't wait for book 3.
If you want to keep track of your list of suspects in Home Is Where the Murder Is you will need a pad and pencil. Home Is Where the Murder Is is the second book in the Hometown Mystery series by Rosalie Spielman and she crafts a great tale with a nice long list of possible murder suspects.
In Home Is Where the Murder Is main character Tessa Treslow is thrown into a murder case when her best friend Freddie is looked at as a suspect....even though she is Deputy Freddie Fredrickson.
The story starts with the town of New Oslo celebrating Pioneer Day with a race, pie auction and other festivities. Tessa, her Aunt Edna, parents, sister and niece are also celebrating Tessa's grandmother's name being added to the Veterans' Honor Roll as a member of the "Rosie's", women who went to work in the factories while the men were away at war. During this time some strangers show up in town claiming to be certain people, one of importance being a woman who says her grandmother and Freddie's grandfather had an affair while he was in France during the war.
Freddie ends up at the top of the suspect list after being overheard saying she would kill the woman and she ends up dead with Freddie's knife sticking out of her....
Because Freddie is her best friend Tessa begins looking into the woman and her claims and who could have wanted her dead. Little does she know that she is going to be opening up a huge web of lies and secrets....some hitting very close to home and her heart.
Readers will love reading this second book in the Hometown Mystery series and even if you haven't read the first book, Welcome Home To Murder, you will find yourself right at home with the town and everyone in it. And when I say you will need paper and pencil to keep track of the suspect list, I am not kidding. I highly suggest writing it in pencil because you will need to erase things as you get to know the suspects. And Spielman knows how to keep your attention in focus with everything and she will blow your mind a few times.
It's Pioneer Days at New Oslo, Idaho, and Tessa is busy organizing the 5k/10k FUNdraiser charity run for the event. She is also busy with her Aunt Edna getting their vehicle restoration business back on its feet. A stranger Wendy shows up in town claiming to be the illegitimate granddaughter of Freddie's recently deceased grandfather Boyd. A heated disagreement of Wendy's claim ensues between Wendy and Freddie. Wendy is found murdered afterward.
Tessa seeks to clear her BFF Freddie's name and at the same wonders why her love interest Nick has become more distanced. Could he possibly have some connection with Wendy's murder?
This solid sophomore entry in the Hometown series is well suited for all cozy lovers, particularly those who have military connections or background.
A riveting mystery with people not being who they say they are, and misdirection laced with confusion. Wonderful characters and an underlying positive message about Veterans. I loved the way characters age 18 to 80 worked together and respected each other. I also loved how family and friends are there for each other no matter what. Humor and animal antics also added much to the story. Really, who can resist a book that has goats, a well behaved (mostly) dog, and a moose that looks like a walking clothesline? I am already looking forward to what the next book in the series will bring! Don't miss this terrific book!
Another great book in the Hometown Mysteries series! I enjoyed all the twists and turns… and of course, the Magnus the Moose sightings! I’m excited to dig in to book three!
Tessa and Edna are sleuthing again, and this time, Tessa's not so sure Nick's who he says he is. Some characters from his past show up, and Freddie's the prime suspect in the murder of a town visitor who claimed to be her cousin. Summer, Tessa's niece, spends part of the summer with Tessa's mom since she's considering matriculating to the local university. She may play junior sleuth in the rest of the series if she winds up living with Tessa & Edna during the school year.
Edna is such a great character pairing for Tessa. They get along great, and their banter shows their long-standing relationship. Good luck to them as their She-canics business kicks off.
A few things slipped through the editing job here, but nothing too distracting. Might be because I read the paperback first and this one was digital. Looking forward to the rest of the series, and hoping the library has #4 by the time I'm done with #3.
If you want to curl up with a cozy mystery with unpredictable twists and turns—mingled with a delightful dose of humor—Rosalie Spielman’s Home is Where the Murder Is would be a great choice.
Retired U.S. Army Colonel Tessa Treslow, her family, and the small town of New Oslo are shocked by the brutal murder of a stranger who claims a familial connection to a former resident. However, there is a dilemma: all fingers point to Tessa’s best friend, a local police deputy, as the killer. Tessa is convinced Freddie is innocent and is determined to track down the identity of the actual assassin.
But where to start? Help arrives with a gaggle of colorful characters from Speilman’s first yarn, Welcome Home to Murder. These include fellow “She-canic” Aunt Edna; niece Summer; bench-sitting-all-seeing Hollis and Hank; the eccentric Prunn sisters; and Nick, Tessa’s fellow veteran and love interest. But to solve the case, Tessa and her allies may have to put themselves squarely in harm’s way.
In the small hometown, everyday life offers ups and downs with a sprinkling of unknown secrets. Spielman artfully intertwines her fictional narrative with the real-life challenges of our warriors adjusting to civilian life and how they cope with the physical and mental trauma of conflict and loss. The result is well worth the read, thanks to this author’s gifted storytelling.
Hometown Mysteries are a fantastic cozy mystery series and book 2, Home is Where the Murder Is is awesome! It is an original plot and kept me engaged until the very end. Tessa Treslow is a retired Army veteran and has returned to her hometown of New Oslo, Idaho where her Aunt Edna, her Mom and Dad, boyfriend Nick and best friend Freddie all live. Tessa and Aunt Edna are building a pole barn for a repair shop for vehicle restoration. Freddie is a local Deputy and Nick is also a veteran who now teaches math in high school. There is a charity run which Tessa and Nick are organizing. A stranger announces she is Freddie's cousin and then the stranger is found dead. Freddie is the prime suspect. There are some suspicious visitors in town and some new characters. Tessa's niece Summer is visiting while she is looking at colleges and helps with sleuthing. Nick plays a big part and it really adds to the story. I had both the ebook and audiobook which was great because I could not put the story down! Family, friendship, relationships, trust, and the mystery are what make this book and series so fantastic! I can't wait for the next book! This has moved to one of my most favorite series and I read a lot! I loved every minute of it! #HomeIsWhereTheMurderIs #HomeTownMysteries #GemmaHallidayPublishing
Tessa Treslow is settling into her hometown in Idaho after retiring from the Army. She’s happy to be back for Pioneer Days, a local festival to celebrate the founding of her town. But the weekend takes a turn when a stranger shows up claiming to be the long-lost cousin of Tessa’s best friend, Freddie. Then the woman is murdered with all evidence pointing to Freddie. Tessa knows her friend didn’t do this, but can she prove it?
I was happy to get to revisit these characters, and this book didn’t disappoint. Several of the characters were more fully developed, which I appreciated. And I enjoyed seeing the quirky characters again. The mystery might have started a little slowly, but the further I went, the more I was hooked until I struggled any time I had to put it down. The climax answered all my questions. I appreciate how Tessa’s time in the army is handled and the fact that Tessa is middled aged. It’s nice to see some variety in main characters. If you are looking for another cozy series to add to your reading list, you need to check this one out.
Tessa Treslow is back! Ms. Spielman has another hit with this series as she investigates a character's backstory. I appreciated how she wove the new life Tessa made in New Oslo with the mystery. We discover what has happened between the ending of the first in the series, "Welcome Home To Murder," and the start of this one, and while some of her life has developed and moved forward, there have been some snags. I love the military background brought out and look forward to reading about more of that part of her past. When in town, it's easy to close your eyes and imagine that you're in the town standing right beside Tessa. And Magnus the Moose is back for the proper respect he deserves and some appropriately placed comic relief. Readers are kept guessing until the end. And just when you think you have it... Waiting anxiously for the next in the series!
This is the first book by Rosalie Spielman that I have read. The synopsis intrigued me and the cover is great. I felt at home with Tessa and my only wonder was what branch she was in the Army. That was not clear in this book. We learn the deputy served as Military Police.
I remember when young men were offered go into the service of go to jail as a means to straighten out their lives and avoid jail time. Some did and some just became the services’ problem.
I enjoyed every twist and turn of this story and plan to read the first book in this series when an opportunity arises in my reading schedule.
I highly recommend this book if you like strong women leaders, unconventional jobs, and a good mystery.
I was given an advanced copy and am not required to leave a positive review.
This is a great series. Loved Home Is Where the Murder Is. Tessa is a true-to-life character, a veteran trying to make a life for herself after the tragic death of her fiancee. She and her beloved Aunt Edna have started a car-restoration business, Tessa is wondering if she's found love again with fellow vet and math teacher Nick. When a stranger, claiming to be the illegitimate cousin to Tessa's best friend is murdered, Tessa's new life is jeopardized. She races to find the murderer to clear her best friend's name. And finds some dark secrets in Nick's past. The story has many twists and surprises that captured my attention and never let go.
Tessa has settled in at her Aunt Edna's home. It is Pioneer Weekend and Tessa's sister and niece are in town. On top of this, a woman has shown up in town claiming to be Tessa's best friend's half-cousin. The woman claims that Freddie's grandfather had an affair and her mother was the result. In addition to this stranger there is another stranger in town claiming to be a student and wanting to see the Grandfather's property because of a WPA site. Why all the interest in Freddie's grandfather? When the supposed cousin turns up dead, secrets start popping up. Including one involving Nick.
The story is engaging and easy-to-read. Lots to red herrings which kept me guessing.
Preordered and devoured this on Kindle before midnight! Groggily wishing for another murder in my home town this morning! Is that terrible? Home town characters are so realistic and believable. As a military wife and mom, I really appreciate all the references to military issues. Quilts of Valor are special recognitions and provide comfort and healing to recipients. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
Home is Where the Murder Is is a fascinating, twisted mystery with lots of misdirects! I am eager for book three because both one and two were excellent. Is/was the victim who she claimed to be? I want to move to New Oslo because the main and supporting characters are so intriguing. I love how the veterans are portrayed. Ms. Spielman has a real winner in this great series. I can never figure them out!
This is a new to me author. I absolutely loved it! It was so easy to get sucked in, I really liked all the characters. Then you start wondering who the killer was and finding out not everyone is who you think they are. Sort of like real life and thinking you actually know someone. This made for a very interesting read. My mind is bad to wonder when I start reading and it’s like my attention span is short but this book kept me absorbed. I recommend it to any cozy lover.
Tessa and Aunt Edna are still recovering from the murder and losing the family businesses. Nick and Tessa are getting closer and helping to organise a fundraising for veterans. When a woman claiming Ro be Freddie’s cousin shows up to claim her inheritance. Then Tessa discovers a dead body and all hell breaks out. A laugh out loud story with a crowd of characters.
UPDATE: Listened to the audio book too. Very well done!
Another gem set in the Gem State! This story is an awesome follow-up to Welcome Home to Murder. Tessa & her Aunt Edna again find themselves drawn into solving a local murder in Home is Where the Murder Is.
I love the characters. I love the location. And I love the well developed story with excellent plot twists.
Very well written enjoyable story. The characters and their backgrounds are unique to this cozy mystery series. Tessa finds herself in the middle of a huge tangled mess. Pick up a copy to see how it all shakes out. I look forward to reading more in this series.
I received a copy from the author. This is a great cozy mystery series that features veterans. The characters are great and very relatable. The mystery is intriguing. Great, fun read.
