“A manual to help us understand how we can best care for, nourish, and show grace to ourselves, The Hormone Shift outlines the information about our bodies that all women should have access to, long before they reach perimenopause.”—Gwyneth Paltrow
The goop hormone authority offers an empowering new approach to taking charge of hormone shifts through every stage of life—especially menopause.
When hormonal highs, lows, twists, and turns feel overwhelming, Dr. Tasneem Bhatia can offer a road map—and a whole new perspective. As an MD with an East-meets-West approach to women’s health, Dr. Tasneem (known as Dr. Taz) combines the wisdom of Eastern modalities like Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine with modern medical treatments for whole body wellness.
To Dr. Taz, menopause is not an “ending”; a woman’s entire life is a spectrum of ever-shifting hormones, and menopause is just one point along that spectrum. And hormone levels are a fluid continuum that you have a lot of control through your diet, how you sleep, how you manage stress, and more.
In The Hormone Shift, Dr. Taz breaks down exactly what is happening behind the scenes in a woman’s body throughout her life and how almost every aspect of health is connected to hormones—from metabolism to mental health. She explains how to prepare for whatever is coming next, and offers a customizable Thirty-Day Hormone Reset plan that uses a combination of Eastern and Western healing modalities to keep the body in balance and deliver a targeted strategy for minimizing unwanted symptoms at every stage.
I always greatly love and appreciate when a mainstream doctor takes it upon themselves to educate themselves beyond pharmaceuticals and medical school (which is funded by the pharma industry). The author has done a wonderful job of implementing ancient Chinese medicine, yoga/ayurvedic practices, homeopathy and herbalism into both her patients and her own life. Her knowledge was impressive, and much of it I already knew from my own research, so it was nice to have that confirmed. Even if you don't suffer from a diagnosed disorder, any woman would benefit from reading this in order to ensure the best quality of life possible as we age.
It was fine.... a few morsels to take home and add to the current regiment. I wanted to learn more about HRT and Bio-HRT, ie the latest health concerns, benefits, etc. It was about 3 minutes of the book. The rest was diet/supplement/chakras/breathing/exercise/etc. Been proactive in those areas for 10 years without resolve of symptoms..... was hoping for more.
For the misinformed woman who finds it difficult to navigate their hormonal health and who is dismissed by a disappointing healthcare system (lacking support for women's health). For those struggling to advocate for themselves, this is an excellent read... providing validation, encouragement, and support if you're struggling with feeling lost, confused, and alone with debilitating symptoms. I wish I knew all this sooner. Even as a nurse, women's health is foreign to me. While I can appreciate my journey from a unique lens, I can't imagine how challenging it is for women who lack awareness or understanding of their symptoms and treatment options available. It's unfair that in 2023, there continues to be limited resources, information, and open conversation about their difficult symptoms, which are often not taken seriously, and women feel alone without the support. Everyone deserves access to holistic and appropriate care, addressing their symptoms with compassion and respect. Especially for the young women who never thought perimenopause could happen so early in their life....I hope this book finds it's way to you, and gives you hope for a much better, peaceful, and happier future. This book empowers it's reader to take back control and build a much kinder relationship with their body and mind
At first, the book came across as informative, affirming, and useful. I recommend part 1 for acknowledging just how much our hormones affect us!
Part 2 became an overwhelming info dump: Ayurvedic types, tongue assessment, an emotional "ladder," chakras, digestive issues, diet and supplements, toxic load, etc. Kudos to Dr. Bhatia for using all these elements in her diagnoses and treatments, but it was a lot of information to attempt to pack into one book and often just skimmed the surface of the topics. A half-page of black-and-white drawings of tongues doesn't help me at all.
Part 3 asks a lot of the reader but doesn't offer consistent support. We're told to limit our supplements to a prioritized few, but every few pages has another Top 10 list of supplements for another condition we may have. At one point, we're told to stop eating dairy, then given recipes that include feta and Greek yogurt. And the to-do lists for the three hormone patterns run into each other without any layout clues to differentiate them. The lack of consistency and clarity undercut my commitment to the reset plan.
My favorite of her books so far. Relatable and easy ti digest. Great tips for perimenopausal. I love that Dr Taz brings Eastern and Western medicine practice together.
I have been a patient of Dr Taz’s for almost 14 years. She changed my life and is the real deal.
Fascinating, useful and important information for women of every age. Most women feel woefully unprepared to face the rigors of growing up as a female both mentally and physically and this book is a priceless education that I found later in life but will share with my daughters and my mother. Dr. Tasneem Bhatia focuses on menopause and later when hormones play a much larger role but having that information before you reach that age will result in you being able to make informed decisions about your health. My thanks to the publisher for the advance copy.
In "The Hormone Shift," Dr. Tasneem Bhatia offers an insightful and empowering guide to navigating the complexities of hormone fluctuations through every stage of a woman's life, with a particular focus on menopause. Drawing from both Eastern and Western medical traditions, Dr. Taz provides a comprehensive roadmap for understanding how hormones impact various aspects of health, from metabolism to mental well-being.
One of the book's strengths lies in Dr. Taz's holistic approach, which emphasizes that menopause is not an endpoint but rather a natural phase in a woman's lifelong hormonal journey. She emphasizes the importance of lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep, and stress management in maintaining hormonal balance and offers practical strategies for optimizing health at each stage.
Readers will appreciate Dr. Taz's accessible writing style and the wealth of information she provides, backed by both scientific research and traditional wisdom. Her customizable Thirty-Day Hormone Reset plan offers a practical framework for implementing positive changes and minimizing symptoms associated with hormone fluctuations.
Overall, "The Hormone Shift" is a valuable resource for women seeking to understand and manage their hormones effectively. Dr. Tasneem Bhatia's holistic approach and empowering perspective make this book a must-read for anyone navigating the complexities of hormonal health.
Whoa. I’m just starting to build my knowledge on this topic but this book was super enlightening. I wish I had this information when I was a teenager. I’m looking forward to unpacking this information for this phase of my life.
Very informative for someone who did not know anything about menopause. I liked how she explained each age group and how important it was to be advocating for ourselves.
Lots the digest. Can't 100% get on board with the thinking but definitely things to consider. Would definitely be a better book to physically read than listen!!
I struggled with this book. The author may not realize it, but she gave the impression that everyone reading it was like her. I’ve struggled with hormone imbalances for much of my life, but am not a super woman. I am a contemplative woman who sometimes throws up if she drinks a smoothie. If you are someone who needs a gentle approach to healing and balance, this is not the book for you. This doesn’t mean there wasn’t good information, I found some good “take aways” from the book. If you’re an extremely busy, high powered individual who is doing it all on six or less hours of sleep a day and wants to take a project of healing along those same “high powered” lines, then by all means read this book. If you, like me, require a slow and gentle approach, you might require a different plan.
I was interested in this book due to being perimenopause. I stopped reading it because it spreading wrong information and being steeped in diet culture. For my safety, I stopped reading. I am recovering from eating disorders and I now live in a fat body due to that is my set point weight (read Health At Every Size and Intuitive Eating the newest edition). When the author mentioned the being fat (she used the "o" word) causes eating disorders, that stopped me mid track. Existing in a fat or straight sized body does not cause eating disorders. Diets cause eating disorders. I stopped the book because of this false information and I felt like this book was more about diets than actual helpful information. It's a no for me and anyone suffering from eating disorders.
This book really doesn’t provide anything additional to some of the other books out there. I am not a fan of detox plans and I refuse to use artificial sweeteners (even stevia and monk fruit). I do appreciate the focus on healthy eating, but have read enough of these books now to know that protein is key, which is only covered in phrases here and there.
I enjoyed and learned a lot from the first half, but then I lost interest and admittedly just got overwhelmed with the bazillion things I need to change to get "hormone healthy". Still took a few things away to work on.

Heather's Notes I found this book very interesting. At times it got to medically technical for me to follow and I doubt I will be doing the reset (at least not while I am so busy), but I did like learning the different functions of the hormones. I will also be incorporating some of the things she mentioned.
A book which help us to understand how we can do best for ourselves, information about our bodies. Hormones are shifting throughout our whole lives whether Young girl,Teen,Young adult or any stage of our age.Hormone Shift are a natural part of every women's story which we should know by heart. How Hormones affect our body and we didn't know about it.We ignore our daily lives changes by imbalancing Hormones because we don't know what're actually happening to us. Hairfall, just change the shampoo or conditioner Acne, used this cream. We mostly busy to maintain our external body but forgot about internal things of our body. These imbalancing Hormones caused anxiety and depression and many more don't know about this. This book is much more informational with little research. I know some get bored because of some bio terms but you should know first it's really help for us. You didn't get all this thing in a single tap of search bar. So,read once and then definitely you go on a deeper thinking of your health. A must read book by all womens and I think by Mens too. Many of us ,take our health for granted.
The Hormone Shift is a great book to start with for anyone interested in learning more about hormone shifts throughout life and how to manage some of their negative effects. Every individual can expect to experience five key hormone shifts in a lifetime. This book introduces readers to those shifts, explains the symptoms involved, and offers suggestions for how to manage them. The author clearly and succinctly educates readers as to the different hormones involved: where they are made, what they do, and their importance. She then goes on to provide what she calls an East/West approach to managing symptoms wherein she offers a number of conventional and holistic solutions. Ideas for supplements, recipes, and a number of handy quizzes are included making this a very well-rounded, complete guide. I received a free copy from Rodale Press in exchange for an honest review.
I am just on my 32 and I have already highlighted so many things in this book.
From what I have read so far.. this book is important for all of us women…NO matter what age.
AND if you are raising a girl OR a boy and they are starting their first HORMONAL shifts.. (anywhere from 9-teens) read this book…and then read the rest of it for yourself!
That is my take as of up to page 32! 😘.
*I’m not saying this is going to be a perfect book. But I am saying it may open your eyes to some things even for your kids that may help because I’m sorry Doctors don’t even know a lot about our hormones and what to do except give us pills because we are “fine”.
Honestly I got tired of being told I was fine by ER doctors after my 2nd and 3rd visit…. It is “just” anxiety.. We know our bodies and well I wasn’t fine and I am still not “fine”
This book changed my life. It was finally a validation instead of being continuously gaslit by multiple doctors, including two PCPs and one Gyno, who told me my inconsistent cycle was normal or I just needed to eat more salads and exercise more.
Once I saw a gyno that actually tested me, I was diagnosed with PCOS and I’ve been working with her to naturally regulate my hormones. This is how I stumbled across this book.
I can’t recommend this enough if you are having any issues with your hormones, whether that is after you get off birth control or other reasons. This is an in-depth look at what symptoms you’re having, how or why you could be having them, and a very solid rehab plan to help your hormones. This book gives you hope🙏🏼
There is a ton of information, guidance, and suggestions for all ages of women who may be dealing with hormone imbalances. I'm glad that I've come across this book now in my early 40s, but it has information for all ages of women. Several times when reading self help books there isn't much help, more just telling. Dr. Bhatia shares and explains and suggests for all ages of women.
I’ve received a free copy from Harmony Books and Rodale Books in exchange for a free and unbiased review. Thank you!
(4.5) I can relate a lot with Dr Taz’ story, her writing is empathetic and accessible and full of knowledge. She doesn’t demonise or blindly advocate for any one approach to medicine, but instead allows for both to work together synergistically. This is a unique and flexible approach to women’s health and a wonderful resource.
I won’t give it 5* because I found the 30 day reset a little confusing to put into place, and some of the advice contradicted each other at times (like recommending yoghurt to be implemented but also recommending to remove dairy)
Good message: Consider when you feel crummy that it might not be you, it might be your hormones. That said, hard to action unless it’s clear where your hormone imbalances might be. Without that knowledge, it feels like a general wellness book. This will be a catalyst for me to talk to my doctor about hormone testing though!
Dr. Bhatia is covering so much information in this book that you aren't getting much more than an introduction to most topics, which is fine if you haven't done any research reading prior to this book.
I appreciate that she advocates for a combination of Western and Eastern medicine, but I didn't learn anything from this book.
Extremely helpful book! It explained everything really well, and I love the fusion of Eastern & Western medicine. I learned so much about my hormones, and was exactly what I was looking for. Highly highly recommend!
I can’t understand how she can demonize hormonal birth control in one breath and then promote beauty augmentation in the next. I left this book feeling worse about myself because hormonal birth control helps me immensely, so I guess I’m the problem.
