Disaster and Dark Truths

An incident with Yukari leaves Nao hospitalized during the critical Burokukai ceremony. A good presentation at the event will help secure Kogetsuan's future, but without the wagashi shop's new master, things may not go well. Especially with Yukari there sowing dissent. While Tsubaki steps in to help, Takigawa visits Nao. He seems genuinely concerned for her, but can she trust what he says anymore? Takigawa's connection to Nao and her mother runs deeper than he initially claimed...

RECAP: Nao is in hospital, T sees her and Taki embrace. The exam sweet goes well, Nao then endeavors to make a sweet for Haseya inn. Afterwards, she learns about mom’s love for young master. Tsubaki visits the Taki household. Nao retrieves her mom’s things and Taki comes onto her. Ends with N and T going through letters and then T musing he was getting protected. Jk ends with mom visiting Taki’s dad.

Wow! It's been a year! Nothing builds up my anxiety like this one does! This series never fails to make you hungry to read volume after volume! As tasty as those confections they are making haha! I mean... What a cliffhanger and what a plot twist?! I'M SHOOKT! Still waiting for Nao and Tsubaki to finally be together again, though.

This felt like a long volume. I have the opposite feeling of Second Lead Syndrome for Takigawa. I don't like or trust him. I wish the leads would get back together already! They've been apart since like volume 9 at this point, haven't they?

The author's notes about meeting the drama actors was interesting bt at the same time, it annoys me when shows deviate so much from the book. I'm going to finish reading before watching so I don't get them confused.

Okay, I don’t wanna spoil anything, so I’m only going to give a vague-ish review of the first couple of books in the series! First, let me assure any of you who might not be interested in NSFW material (or disappoint those of you who are lol)– this isn’t that spicy of a comic. There are a few panels in each book so far that include very brief allusions to sex but don’t show anything outright.

Y’all. This series had me in a VISE GRIP!! It’s SO GOOD. It’s incredibly well written, and the art is just so beautiful and elegant, matching the subject matter perfectly. The number of kimono and wagashi illustrated in here alone is so satisfying.

This series is the kind that gets better and better with each volume, and that’s not something I can usually say about much these days, so I was so, so happy to read this. It unfolds throughout and never lets you rest on your laurels, thinking you know for sure what’s going to happen or who will be unveiled to be involved with the main plot or any number of subplots going on at the same time. Beautiful!

I love the characters, and I love how the creator develops their relationships across so many volumes. I felt so fulfilled watching these characters’ arcs unfold the way they did. I want to say more, but I would be spoiling SO MUCH if I did! Just, trust me, you need to go give this series a read, it’s fantastic. It’s no wonder they got a tv adaptation!

I disagree a bit with the jacket copy on this series, describing it as spine chilling. Maybe I’m desensitized by all the horror movies I watch (lol jk it’s a lifetime’s worth of trauma 😂), but this was actually much more of a wagashi-centric drama, romance, thriller for me than a spine chiller. And that is not a bad thing at all! I think this series is so successful in part because of how fluidly it combined so many genres into a seamless and engaging story.

My point is, the jacket copy doesn’t quite do it justice. If you like comics that introduce you to artisan crafts and what goes into making them, this is a comic you want to read. If you like enemies to lovers and/or enemies to friends, this is your comic. If you like mystery and thrillers, this is a comic for you. If you like attention to detail and well designed plots and other aspects of writing as a craft, this is definitely your comic! Odds are very good you’ll like this comic, my friend!

Now, lemme give you a couple warnings, though: there is a lot of showing of abuse, violence, and manipulative, if not gaslighting, behavior in here. There is murder, attempted murder, child neglect, the loss of parents, etc. There are some topics I wish the creator had addressed better, such as the domestic abuse aspects, especially earlier in the series. But I promise you, the story is worth it.

Overall, I love this series so much! I’m in pain waiting in line for books 17-19 from my library right now, and I can’t wait to see how it continues. Please read it so we can talk about it!

Everyone seems concerned when they learn of Nao's accident, but perhaps none more than Tsubaki. Once again, he's saving the day with the ceremony until she's able to step back in. It seems they both at least acknowledge to themselves if not to each other that they still have feelings for each other at this point, though now they have another hurdle to cross. Do they seek for the true answer behind their father's murder? Tsubaki seems afraid that the reason he can't remember everything is that he's the killer, and what that would mean for his relationship with Nao going forward. Kyoko seems to know yet another secret though, involving Tsubaki's true birth father that all of them think is also dead at this point in time.

Ok so The Proprietress does have a name. It's Kyoko. LOL. I wonder if she was always named and I just missed it. Because I can't stand her guts. Or her name was just recently used.

One thing I can't stand about female leads. Is them being screwed over by someone and not calling them on it. I understand not stooping to someones level. But calling that person out for what they did shows them that you aren't a doormat. And that you won't take their shit lying down. Especially when you have someone on your side already.

I need a female lead that will speak up for herself and stand her ground when she's being shit on. Enough of this noble high ground shit.

Coming out of the last book, where something was wrong with all of them, this hits a welcomed slower pace that's not without even more drama. We continue moving forward while also getting more back story on Takigawa and Yukari, and a thickening of the mystery surrounding who actually murdered Tsubaki's dad. And Nao shines on the high road in a quietly shown (and much needed) lesson in business and morality, although it's clear that morality isn't a high priority for most of these characters. (˘･_･˘)

And just *how* does this series manage to leave me gagging at the end of each volume lately??? It's so fun and doesn't take itself so seriously. I will have to do a complete re-read of this series when it ends, because if I remember correctly, before Nao's secret was revealed to Tsubaki, there was such a tension in the earlier volumes even with all the sabotage, lol. Speaking of which, I love and adore Nao and Tsubaki's interactions. It's refreshing to have them speak to the other with open candor now, thank goodness.

Repeating what I said for volume 13: End your chapters on a cliff-hanger…a piece of advice I have heard many, many authors say they learned as they wrote. And it seems each volume of Something’s Wrong with Us must end that way so that we are clamoring for the next edition and more, more, more!

Yup, I read the final pages of Volume 14 and I was soooooo ready for Volume 15. Then I saw the one-page teaser for the next volume: “The truth of what happened that day comes to light!” I am seriously going to go crazy waiting for #15 to come via ILL!

Vol. 14-19 review.

Such a good ending! Very sweet, I teared up a little. The themes of family are so tragic and heartwarming and fascinating, and all the wagashi look absolutely gorgeous. I want to try them all!
I love the maturity of this story, even if it does have its unrealistic moments. All the twists and turns in this story had me absolutely riveted; it was like watching a poetic soap opera! The author really knows their stuff.

I am loving this series and with each new volume contains a twist that we don’t see coming.

It started with the murder of Tsubaki’s dad and the blame on Nao’s mum.

It led to the relationship of Nao and Tsubaki

However

There is more to this tragedy. New truths are slowly becoming unveiled and the twist at the end is shocking.

I am highly anticipating reading volume 15

So much drama! I am enjoying this reading, nevertheless, I have mixed feeling about this manga. I love the drama, the characters' development and the story (the relationships, , but I was hoping for a more thriller-mystery sort of atmosphere. Nao didn't have any sort of plan, and the author didn't seem to have either. The story has been developing finally, and we are getting to the bottom of the murder mystery.
I feel the author could have cut it short by a couple of volumes, but I can't stop reading anytime this is out. I can't wait for the story to wrap up!
