Claire Norton is a revenant-the reincarnation of a 17th- century noblewoman found guilty of witchcraft. While this amazing discovery explains some of the strange vision-memories she's experienced, it doesn't explain what she's supposed to do with these visions or how she'll battle the forces that have been against her since even before she was Mistress Alice Ramsay. Claire is not alone on her journey. She is guided by Leo, her familiar, an ancient spirit in an animal's body. Leo helps her battle the Dark Circle coven, the black witches and warlocks. As Claire tries to come to terms with who she is, who she was, and who she must be, she also struggles to understand why her mother left her and her father three years ago. Could she have known her daughter's power and destiny? Claire wonders if her mother also visits the alternative dimension Leo has revealed to her. And as she prepares for future battles with the evil coven, Claire begins to wonder if she has the strength and knowledge to fight the terrible threat of their dark powers.

As an author she had an early start, publishing her first poems when she was 12. Her first book, The Dragon's Egg, was published by Scholastic Canada: it was a national bestseller and a Regional Winner of the Silver Birch Award (a children's choice award). It is now featured on school curricula across the country. The Hidden World and White as the Waves: A Novel of Moby Dick were both CCBC "Our Choice" selections, and White as the Waves was shortlisted for the IODE Violet Downey Book Award. Baird has also written two trilogies, the Willowmere Chronicles and The Dragon Throne. The Stone of the Stars, the first book of The Dragon Throne, received a starred review in Publisher’s Weekly.
Baird's short fiction has appeared in On Spec magazine, a Canadian periodical of original science fiction and fantasy for adults. 'Je moet overleven! Want op de een of andere manier weet ik dat als jij overleeft, ik ook zal overleven. Jij bent mijn geest...'
Eigenlijk roept het eerste boek een hele hoop vragen op, zonder dat die worden beantwoord. Dit boek geeft een antwoord op al die prangende vragen en legt echt uit hoe de hele wereld van Claire en de daemonen werkt. Het zit heel erg knap en ingenieus in elkaar, hier is duidelijk over nagedacht. Bovendien is het een stuk spannender dan Boek 1, er gebeurt ontzettend veel, van bij het begin tot op het bittere einde. Magnifiek.
Net als het eerste deel is dit ook een boek dat je in één ruk uitleest, om op het puntje van je stoel te gaan zitten. Absoluut niet zo'n tussenboek als je 't mij vraagt. Claire en haar avonturen zijn prachtig neergeschreven en superorigineel. Ze is een ijzersterk personage, en haar band met Leo is ook mooi uitgediept. Zij vormen samen zonder twijfel een van mijn meest favoriete koppels in boeken ooit ('koppels' in de breedste zin van het woord; het gaat hier tenslotte om een puur vriendschappelijke relatie).
Laat ik het verder kort houden, want anders blijf ik leuteren hier: Ik ben gewoonweg lyrisch over dit boek.

PS Het is ontzettend tof dat hier het Beest van Gévaudan genoemd wordt. Je weet waarschijnlijk niet waar ik het over heb, maar ga maar eens naar Wikipedia. Volgens mij is dat ook een van de redenen waarom Scarlet van Marissa Meyer zich in Frankrijk afspeelt; het is anders gewoon te veel toeval.

door drukke tentamenweken en daarna het begin van een nieuwe module weinig kunnen lezen. dit is de 2de keer dat ik het boek lees en nog altijd intrigeerde het mij. het feit dat het over deamonen en sjamanisme gaat trekt mij erg het is een verhaal vol met spanning en plot twists. Claire doet er alles aan om Myra te beschermen maar is dit ook nodig en welk geheim is of bewaard de papegaai Tillie?
Het leest heerlijk weg en is echt een verhaal om gewoon even voor te moeten zitten.

The second book in the Willowmere Chronicles trilogy.
More is explained than in book 1, but I still feel like I'm not quite sure what the real threat is to the main character. I see some direction, but like the first book, this book lacked a bit of direction in terms of what the antagonists were trying to do to the protagonist (if they're trying to kill her, there's no explanation as to why, because she's not a threat to them at this point). Hopefully the 3rd and final book in the series will clear things up.

The story goes on in this book. Claire and her spirit Leo will find eachother again and Josie just is anoying again. That has to stop! And Van Buren and his nephew are a thread to Willowmere, but why? I enjoyed this book. I thought it was better than the first one, but it had the same 'problem' as the first book; the book starts really slow abd easy, only the last 50 pages were very exciting. I really wanted to know how it was going to end. The only thing I think is a pitty is that they haven't brought William back. I missed a bit of romance.
I thought it was a good read, but a little bit of tension in the beginning would have been nice.

Can't say I found this one as good as the first in the series. Rather ho-hum.
