Nether Realms is an erotic anthology of star-hot sex that explodes beyond our Earthling understanding of body, gender and self-identity.
15 strange, sexy tales from across the universe, where each comic has at least one character who goes beyond the gender binary or explores gender in an interesting way.
What I love about these anthologies as a whole is how nuanced and diverse and carefully handled they are, in terms of the queer rep they center. This one started off with a great and thought-provoking intro from the editor about what nonbinary sex is and how decisions about the anthology were made, since nonbinary people can look any way, do any kind of sex, etc. I also love how each story has a page about its creators and any notes they wanted to include or notes from the editor. They also include content warnings (not just triggers, per se, but the sort of kinks and sexual content included). All of this just makes for a much richer experience.
This one, much like the others, also had a lot of diversity that wasn't just about sexuality/gender as well. Lots of physical disability and POC and different body types.
But what I've realized from reading two of these anthologies now is, I think the stories are too short for me. Obviously I understand they are short stories, but there's still some range as to what that can mean. And these were so short that there was very little, if any, story to most of them. It was basically just sex. When there was a story, it usually jumped into sex in a really sudden, weird, unrealistic (for me) way. And that just isn't what I like. I want to feel something between the characters who are having the sex.
I do still want to shout out my favorites though!
With Benefits by Ryan Breadinc & Perry Wheeler - A shapeshifting sex worker and an aromantic bounty hunter who hook up every so often. I could feel the playful, fun friendship dynamic between them, and I enjoyed that. I also enjoyed the art.
Experimental Xenobiology by Shane Basement & Shae Beagle - A human stranded on a hostile planet gets help from an insectoid alien. The alien was adorable and such a sweetheart, and it was a nice portrayal of how sex and/or kink can help someone find or be themselves. I really liked the art style too, and the use of lots of teal and purple.
Exit Tense by Fydbac - Two beings on a space ship have an encounter with a black hole. I was a little confused about the story, but the idea of a black hole entity was neat. And the art, while also confusing at times, was super cool, especially with the colors and then how the black hole entity was drawn, sort of swirling into everything.
The Payload by C. Bedford - A bounty hunter goes to get nectar from a special plant. This was so ridiculous, in the best way possible! Just so much fun. Really it was just plant sex, but still so fun with how it was written. And the art really captured the western pulp + classic comic feel, plus it was just a lovely and fun style.
So overall, I loved the idea behind the anthology and all the diversity! But the stories were a little too short for me to get into most of them. But this is very subjective, which is why I'm settling my rating on 3 stars. If you have different taste from me when it comes to short stories, you may love this!
I am… not the target audience for this. 😂 I’m simply too ace. But some of the art in here was INCREDIBLE. Also, I appreciate that there are so many body types and that gender is so fluid here. I love that this is a book of spicy comics that’s built on the idea that there’s no one right way to have a body, and I frankly wish that concept was more popular in general. The stories are schmexy, but very few of the characters are firm-bodied or traditionally attractive. There’s a lot of sagging and stretch marks and surgical scars. My favorite entries were “Experimental Xenobiology” (cuuuuute), “The Four am Show” (wtf even happened here, idk, but the art style was amazing) and “Astral*Project” (the ARTTTTTTTTT, this was queer joy personified).
Also I’m pretty sure that in one of these stories, two humans 🍆 the embodiment of a black hole?
Nether Realms was fun and sexy, and as a non-binary person, it's super exciting to have an erotic comic anthology by, for, and about non-binary people. I really love what Tab Kimpton's doing in the comics space, and I will continue to purchase anything he edits.
My favorites were: Automated Assistance by Butchflux - what we'd all be doing with an AI Vee's Theorem by Faeri Sami - the most gorgeous art in the entire collection Experimental Xenobiology by Shane Basement and Shae Beagle - my favorite story with great art and a sweet romance with a first contact that hit a lot of my personal sexy preferences and identity points The Payload by C. Bedford - like I wouldn't enjoy a plant fucking story
A fun, sexy and unique comic anthology full of wonderful artwork and stories. I loved seeing each artist and storytellers take on the sci-fi ‘gender explorers’ topic.
There was a lot of diversity - not just in respect to gender but to POC, physical disabilities and body types.
I loved that each story prefaced with a little bit about the upcoming story, about the creator(s), possible content warnings and triggers (and what page to skip to if the story was not your thing) and inspiration behind each story. I wish more anthologies (both written and comic) had this!
My main downfall was because of how short each story was, there wasn’t a lot of time to flesh out a story, and so most of the pages were focused around sex (as I should have expected for an erotic anthology!)
Almost all of these stories were too short to actually become interesting. And I love the concept of a queer gender nonconformist collection but some of this was just….. trying *so* hard. And I’m absolutely begging you to stop tagging things with “front hole” because it’s terrible. Anyway shoutout to “Astral Project” which was my favorite by far out of the collection (yet included no erotica which I found confusing). I just wouldn’t recommend this.
Touch: 3/5 Automated Assistance: 5/5 Aster-nomical: 4/5 Vee’s Theorem: 5/5 With Benefits: 4/5 Stuck (Between a Dream and the Deep Blue Stars): 3/5 Experimental Xenobiology: 5/5 Exit Tense: 3/5 Get Along Shirt: 4/5 Not’re Dame: 4/5 The Payload: 5/5 The Four AM Show: 3/5 Parallax: 4/5 Astral*Project: 5/5 Be Gay Do Crime: 5/5
A solid anthologies of sexy stories. Like most anthologies, some stories out perform others. I do like the content description before each story and the authors' bios.
