Mail-Order Bride Substitute

Different worlds. Trust destroyed.

Olivia comes from a rich family, but it hasn’t protected her from malicious rumors. A marriage of convenience as a mail-order bride to Riley Shannon is exactly what she needs for a fresh start. Especially when he makes it clear he wants no romance. Something she is in complete agreement with. She’ll go in place of her friend, Sylvia, who has changed her mind about the arrangement she made with Riley.

Riley has bitter memories of loving a rich woman who doesn’t care to embrace ranch life. He has no intention of repeating that lesson. When Olivia steps from the train, offering to be his substitute bride, his answer is a resounding ‘no thanks.’ But Olivia isn’t about to take no for an answer and makes her way to the ranch, determined to prove she is the answer to his prayers.

What will it take for these two to overcome the barriers to their love?

Linda Ford grew up devouring books and making up stories in her head—often late at night when she couldn't sleep. But she hadn't planned to write. Instead, she dreamed of running an orphanage. In a way, that dream came true. She married, had four homemade children, adopted ten and lived (at times, endured) the dream.

Writing first took her to non-fiction human-interest articles for newspapers and eventually a non-fiction book about tuberculosis set in the 1930s and 1940s (Touched By The White Plague). But romance had always been her first love and she turned to writing love stories. She is multi-published in the CBA market.

She lives on a small ranch in Alberta, Canada, where she can see the mountains every day. She and her husband continue to enjoy their children and grandchildren.

I don’t read a lot in the marriage of convenience or mail-order bride tropes, but Mail-Order Bride Substitute is a wonderful change for me. I was pulled in quickly and really liked Olivia, Riley, and the rest of the Shannon family.

Olivia is easy to connect with and I admired her determination. And Riley is rough on the exterior, but I knew from the get-go that he was a good guy who’s past has hurt him. Their plights are believable, and I enjoyed watching them grow.

Their stories are wrapped in willpower, trust, faith, humor, and depth. The characters undergo great transformation, and the elements of faith are so heartwarming. This story surprised and inspired me. Quite a treat.

First Line: Riley Shannon had let grief and regret rule his life too long.

An engaging prairie romance of convenience. Oliva is a likable heroine from the beginning, a brave problem solver, going into the unknown to marry a man determined not to fall in love.

An enjoyable western romance, the third in a series, though it stands alone quite well. I liked that Olivia has supportive friends and family, she is willing to try new things and doesn't even though she is against some mighty tough odds. Riley isn't the best at first impressions, but he is a good man who is thoughtful and kind, though he has been hurt in the past.

A well written read, with a sweet romance that had great elements of meaningful interaction and relationship building. I really liked getting to know the characters and see them get to know and trust each other, as well as seeing Olivia's sister-in-law's help her adjust to ranch life. I loved the western setting and the marriage of convenience plot, which was well executed with wonderful characters. Well wroth the read!

Series: Montana Mail-Order Brides, #3
Format: Kindle e-Book
Challenge Prompt: CNL's #37 of 50 - "with a blue dress on the cover"

Book #5 of 2025: I've been enjoying this series even though mail-order brides are not my trope. This is a Canadian author as well, which I like, since I'm Canadian.

Riley is a little much and very hardheaded. Olivia softens him through her determination, steadfastness, art, music, and kindness. I really enjoyed Olivia's character and she'd be someone I'd want as a friend. Neither thought they'd ever marry for love and fell in love anyway!

I love how the family has their own community at the ranch and they take on anyone new with such care.

I love reading books from this author because I am able to picture the time period easily with her vivid details. She brings the story to life with words that flow across the pages and helps readers relate to the characters with ease. I have read several marriage of convenience stories lately but this one really spoke to me. I loved how it was emotional and was not the typical couple gets married and suddenly they are in love story.

This story has depth and is realistic because it shows two people who struggle with their feelings and don’t rush into marriage right away. As you read the story you will find that Olivia was not who Riley had invited to become his bride. What Olivia does is decide to prove that she was meant to be at the ranch all along. Her determination and faith see her through difficult moments. Trying to convince Riley that she will not leave is a big task but I loved how her word was something you can count on. Her grace and quiet spirit is refreshing and I liked that she didn’t try to push the issue of marriage.

Riley is not happy when he discovers that the woman he thought was coming to marry him, sends a substitute instead. I think perhaps he was a little upset and wasn’t sure Olivia would last a day at the ranch. Riley is a hard worker and is very respectful of Olivia. There are some funny moments in the story when Olivia tries to cook eggs. Obviously she is not a cook which puts doubt in Riley’s mind that he can marry her. He learns a valuable lesson about judging someone by where they come from.

With a beautiful backdrop of the old west, we are transported back to the days where hard work happened from sunup to sundown. The women cooked, cleaned and made sure their family was cared for. Riley and Olivia both need to trust each other and allow God to show them that they were not brought together by accident. I enjoyed how their relationship was not rushed but allowed to slowly blossom as they began to share their past. It is a sweet story that illustrates how love can happen if you open your heart and allow the past to not define you.

I want to congratulate the author on her 100th published book. It is an honor to read books by an author who shares faith through stories that bring us closer to God.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

I absolutely love Christian Historical Fiction novels and I really enjoy Marriage of Convenience storylines. Mail-Order Bride Substitute by Linda Ford is Book 3 in the Montana Mail-Order Brides series. I have not read the first 2 books in this series, but I have no trouble following along with this book.

Olivia is from a Well-to-Do Family and is used to life with hired help and lavish items. She has determined she needs to get away as rumors about her are swirling around in town. She agrees to become a Mail-Order Bride taking the place of her friend Sylvia who has changed her mind about the agreement she made. Riley Shannon is quite surprised to see Olivia get off the train instead of Sylvia, as he was not told of the "Substitute Bride" that was coming. Riley realizes that Olivia is a "rich woman" and he had a past relationship that didn't work because of a "rich woman" who didn't fit into Ranch Life. Riley is looking for someone who will cook and clean and settle into Ranch Life. He doesn't feel Olivia is that person, but Olivia is determined to show him that she is the one he is searching for. Riley allows Olivia and her hired help to come to the Ranch for a time while they figure things out. Will Olivia and Riley have a Marriage of Convenience? Will they learn to LOVE each other?

WOW, I have never read any books by Linda Ford before this book and I am really enjoying her writing style. I was reeled into this storyline from the very first chapter and I finished the book within 5hrs! Olivia is a very determined woman who really proves that she is made for "ranch life.". She is hurt by a previous relationship and really wants to start a new chapter in her life. Riley Shannon is looking for a Marriage of Convenience with no Romance. I really love that he had a change of heart once Olivia had been at the Ranch for a while. Both Olivia and Riley have "baggage" from previous relationships that they have to work through to have a good relationship between the pair. The book is a definite Page Turner and there were quite a few twists and turns in the story. The book is about Faith, Moving Forward, and knowing God's plan is greater than our plan. I believe this book would be a good read for anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance. FANTASTIC BOOK!

Mail-Order Bride Substitute by author Linda Ford is a Christian historical fiction novel. This 268 page western story is Book Three in the Montana Mail-Order Brides series and her 100th published book! If you haven’t read the first two books, this may be read as a stand alone. However, I think you would benefit reading them first to learn the back story on some of the unique characters.

This is the story of Riley Shannon, eldest of the Shannon brothers. He has been corresponding with Sylvia and offered marriage to this mail-order bride candidate. The problem is that she has found a local man to love so her friend Olivia steps in to take her place. Things do not go as planned. Riley is a stubborn man with bad memories from the past. Olivia has been hurt, too, and equally hardheaded. When these two got together it was a game of cat and mouse with sparks flying.

This is a fun book. I was immediately engaged with the characters and captivating story. The characters are unique and believable. Riley had two married brothers, one single one, as well as some other supporting characters that kept the story running at a page turning pace. I found it difficult to put the book down, so I did not!

The cooking results and lessons that Olivia attempted were humorous. I thoroughly enjoyed that part of the story. The young children brought levity and smiles, too. Christian messages were heavily sprinkled throughout the book. That is one of my favorite things in a Christian book. I love inspirational messages that are upfront and not concealed.

I highly recommend this brilliant book. Readers of Christian historical, western, romance will adore it. This one certainly did. I give it a 5 star rating. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

The two lovebirds in this story were quite a pair. Though they fought their feelings for one another long and hard, they were quite tenacious and stubborn. Both of them needed to let go of the past to embrace their future.

It all started out as Rily Shannon began writing to a Sylvia to work on an agreement with her to become his mail-order bride in a marriage of convenience at first, but eventually to have children. What happens next throws Riley for a loop, and he digs in his stubborn heels and fights at the inevitable anyway.

What happened next? Well, a different bride comes instead. Olivia, seeking a new start from her hometown and broken heart, agrees to take Sylvia's place as Sylvia has made other plans. One problem is that Riley did not receive the letter explaining this change. Well, no thank you he basically says as he takes one look at Olivia and knows she is a rich girl. Already Riley had his heart broken by one before and he did not think Olivia would be the bride he was looking for now. So, he left her and her man servant at the station.

Well, then Olivia does the unexpected as she has guts and gumption a mile wide. She hires a wagon and goes to Riley's cabin, makes herself to home, and promises to prove herself a worthy wife. This was certainly a battle of the wills and an interesting courtship between these two who were so set in their opinions. It was fun to watch.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Mail-Order Bride Substitute is book three in the Montana Mail Order series that is written by Linda Ford. I have not read the other books in the series and I had no issues following along. One of the things that I really love about reading this author is her descriptions. She brings her story to life through the pages and you can feel like you are standing there watching it unfold.

Riley knows he needs someone to cook meals for him and bear his children. However, he has been hurt in the past by a woman that he loved. He wants a loveless marriage. When Olivia steps off the train he is confused because it was her friend that he was supposed to marry. Olivia takes her friends place and needs a fresh start after her ex fiancé spreads very nasty rumors about her. She is a determined woman, even though she is accustomed to a life of leisure. Riley does not want to marry her - but allows her and her servant, Alfred to stay. Olivia is determined to prove that she can make it as a ranch wife.

I absolutely adore the Shannon family. They were welcoming to Olivia and have no issues with helping her learn the ropes. Seeing Riley and Olivia grow throughout the book was also so heartwarming. I love mail order bride/marriage of convivence stories. This one was beautifully written. I hope to read the next book in the series.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

This is book 3 in the Montana Mail-Order Bride Series. It’s okay if you haven’t read the other books as this reads well as a stand-alone novel. I read this novel before the other books in the series and did not feel lost at all.

I love mail-order bride books. They’re so fun and they have history in them. History is a big thing for me. I love reading historical fiction novels. They draw me in and won’t let me go.

In this novel, we find Olivia who comes from a wealthy family. But that doesn’t mean she’s happy or that life is easy. So she decides to take her friend’s place as a mail-order bride. A bride of convenience, no romance involved.

When she meets Riley he immediately says no he won’t marry her. She’s rich and he’s got a hangup about that. What happens when she doesn’t just get back on the train and go home in defeat?

This was such a fun novel. I loved the characters and the entire book. Now I will definitely be checking out the rest of the series now and more from this author.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

Mail-Order Bride Substitute by Linda Ford is a Historical Western Romance. Imagine sending for a bride, but someone else arrives in her place. Riley Shannon finds himself in exactly that position. Olivia comes from a wealthy family back east, but when malicious rumors cause her to head west.

Losing a woman he loved because she did not love ranching life, Riley Shannon seeks out to find a mail-order bride who is the opposite. He wants a marriage of convenience. So when Olivia arrives, complete with a male servant and a piano, Riley is anything but amused.

I loved how the author developed both the characters and the storyline. The relationships between Riley and Olivia, as well as Riley and his family, plus Olivia and family, keep the story interesting. The author developed the storyline at a pace that kept me interested. With twists and turns, this book will keep you reading.

So if you enjoy HIstorical Western Romances, check out Mail-Order Bride Substitute by Linda Ford for yourself. I definitely recommend it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Strong willed and determined, Olivia is trying to make a new life for herself. After her fiancé was involved with another woman, she was the victim of rumors circulating about her. She had to find a way out of town and decides to take her friend’s place as a mail order bride. Her groom to be is not excited to find out that Olivia is the substitute. Olivia is desperate to make the relationship work and doesn’t understand why Riley can’t just make the relationship work. Riley wants her gone but Olivia is determined. Can they make things work out between the two of them?

The book moved along in a fast pace that kept the reader interested in the storyline. The characters were very strong in their viewpoint which is very realistic. It was an easy read that went by way too fast! This is book #3 in the series but could easily be read as a stand alone.

I would recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.

Mail Order Bride Substitute is the third installment from Linda Ford's Montana Mail Order Brides series. Since this is the first book I have read of the series, I believe it can be read as a stand alone. I enjoyed this sweet tale of love, faith, forgiveness, and hope. I admired Olivia's determination and courage to prove she is not who she is perceived to be. I was not sure about Riley at first but he grew on me. I thought their story to be a pretty good and heartwarming book to read. It is definitely worth reading.

I am giving Mail Order Bride Substitute four and a half stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean historical fiction. I do hope I get to read the other books from the Montana Mail Order Brides series soon.

I received a paperback copy of Mail Order Bride Substitute from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

This was a fill your heart with joy, feel good story. It took Riley and Olivia a long time to finally realize God’s plan for them. Both had pasts they were dealing with and trying to work through, never an easy thing. I enjoyed the fact that the ranch Riley lived on had houses that were built and occupied by his family. The author’s descriptions of the surrounding scenery had me envious and wanting to be there, especially the waterfall and crystal clear lake!
My enquiring mind would love to know what happens with Alfred and Mrs. Bennet. I may have to just use my imagination if there’s not to be a forthcoming story.
This was an enjoyable passage of time for me and a book I wouldn’t mind visiting again, just like rewatching a favorite movie. The second time around may bring in new insights that were missed the first go round.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through Celebrate Lit but was not required to write a review positive or otherwise.

At first, I prepared myself to be disappointed...this seemed like the story would follow the same old, same old--a rich, spoiled bride who would burn the dinner and give up, only to have the hero follow her and declare his undying love.

There was a little bit of that, but the heroine surpassed all that. She had character and she persisted. She had talents and skills. The hero didn't fall in love with her just because of some intangible attraction (even thought there was that), but because of the wonderful person she was.

I did find the pressure to marry right away odd--even for the times. Once the guy decided to wait to make a decision, they needed time to fall in love. Just my opinion.

So, I recommend this book...there is some beauty in a love where God leads.

I received this book free as part of a Celebrate Lit tour, but the opinions are my own.

Mail Order Bride Substitute by author Linda Ford is full of miscommunications, leading to some interesting situations. Well developed characters make this story enjoyable to read, as they bring moments of laughter and even heartwarming awwws….Olivia won’t take no for an answer. Riley won’t say yes.

Olivia tries hard to adjust and adapt to the West but it’s difficult for a former rich girl who had everything done for her. I loved the ladies that came around her to help. Community is important! Riley, who makes a really good hero, just isn’t sure about this marriage of convenience to the wrong woman. Can they learn to care for and about each other?

If you enjoy historical fiction or marriage of convenience stories, then I recommend Mail Order Bride Substitute.

In typical Linda Ford fashion, this is a fun sweet and heartwarming story of two people who enter into a marriage of convenience. This is Olivia and Riley's story, and the character development is excellent. Olivia after finding her fiancee' in a compromising situation agreed to take her friend's place as Riley's MOB. Unfortunately upon arriving, Riley is not pleased about the switch and at first refuses but later agrees to a marriage of convenience. Olivia works to convince him she will be a suitable wife but she has a hard time adapting to ranch life until her sister-in-law and other ladies of the community step in and help her out. Will Riley and Olivia be able to overcome all of the obstacles before them and find a HEA? Be sure and read this great story to find out; I know you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Enjoyed this one also, even more I think!

Another mail order bride marries the oldest Shannon brother. Boy the Shannon boys are all dunder heads! We love them very much, but man, they’re slow to overcome their hangups. Someone oughta kick them in the butt. They absolutely don’t realize how lucky they are to have received such beautiful, kind, and loving women. I wish the others would have their stories shared a bit more in each book. I’d like to hear more about Honor and her quest to read and write. I love that they have a little blonde boy that can play with Lindy. Couldn’t Gerald have have had a come-uppance or news of his failing?! Too bad that the Shannon boys have to dwell on their hurts and betrayals. I just read a 72 book western series and everything was resolved in a little over 100 pages. Ha!

Mail-Order Bride Substitute is the first book that I've read in Linda Ford's Montana Mail-Order Brides Series, even though it's the third one. It's a book that can easily be a stand-alone even though it's part of a series. I found it to be a delightful read. I love the way the author incorporated faith as part of the characters' every day life. Despite the pain and struggles the hero and heroine have undergone in the past, they are open to learning and developing their faith. While I haven't read many books by Linda Ford, I'll be looking to read more in the future. Mail-Order Bride Substitute is a sweet story that will encourage the reader. I highly recommend it.

I thought this was a good book by Linda Ford. I liked how Olivia was a city girl but was willing to make living in the west work even when Riley didn’t think she would last. I admire her determination. I liked how Olivia and Riley had to let go of past hurts in order to realize that they could be happy together. I liked how it was a process and it took turning to God for there to be this change of heart. I liked the other characters in the book and how they were trying to convince them that they were perfect for each other. I thought the story was well written and an enjoyable read.

I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors.  A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.

Riley and Olivia

This is a sweet mail order bride tale with a twist. Instead of his requested bride she decides she loves another and sends her best friend, Olivia in her place. Riley is the oldest brother and he is a sworn bachelor. He loved once before and she died in an accident shortly after they married. He feels since she was a city girl she would have been alive and happy to day had she not come west with him. He sends for a country bride for a marriage of convenience and he gets a substitute city girl. He feels it will never work and does all he can to talk her in to returning to the big city. She has different plans. You will enjoy discovering how they find their happily ever after.

nice

This was a nice book to read. It is written by Linda Ford and she has written it very well. What can a city born lady want on a western ranch? What will she get? The love of her life. He was to merry another and this woman shows up instead of his mail order bride she changed her mind and asked her friend to go and merry him. So what is he to do? A nice enjoyable read you will enjoy.

Montana Mail-Order Bride book 3

What a Beautiful Romance, although it started out terribly. Riley had Love at one time in his life, but when he lost it he hardened his heart from falling in Love again. Riley has been writing to a mail order bride, but when Olivia arrived instead of his intended Riley just left her at the railway station. Riley doesnt understand how determined Olivia can be.

Third brother third unexpected

Olivia is more like Gwen when he was expecting basic like Honor. She is substituting for the girl who was corresponding but replaced her when Sylvia became engaged to instead of Olivia who caught her fiancé in bed with another woman. This was quite a tale and I really enjoyed how God was so invested.

Mail Order Bride Substitute

This was a good story about Riley wanting a bride, someone to cook for him and keep, his house. Sylvia was the lady he had been writing to and they had discussed he not wanting live, just someone to keep house and bear his children. The lady arriving was not Sylvia. She was determined to make him happy, just more to come.

This novel was absolutely the best one I have read for a while. I literally couldn’t put this book down until I had finished it. This story clearly shows that sometimes what we want isn’t always what is best for us.

Waterfalls and sweet dreeam

This is a wonderful story that terrible things about love can make destroy people if they try to do it alone. Look9 to and trust God and he will shower you with great happiness. Truly a great story of life in the west in early 1800's . Great way to show how God works that he always has our back.

What a good story. It's very hard to love someone after you've been hurt. You're afraid it'll happen again. But, it's so much better to love and endure the pain that might come, than to never have loved.
This story walks us through the pain and hurt that had to be released, and let's us watch love take hold.
