The manga is based on Disney’s world-famous and classic stop-motion film by Tim Burton which was released in 1993. It’s a bizarre adventure between Halloween and Christmas and inspires with a unique mixture of Gothic fantasy, black humor and a pinch of romance. The manga has 176 pages and is for kids of every age.
As the synopsis implies, is Jack Skellington the master of all things creepy and spooky. After celebrating Halloween once again, he realises that he’s tired of the endless repetition of Trick or Treat and longs for a change. He accidentally discovers Christmas Town, a world completely foreign to him, without ghosts and fear, and first tells the townspeople of what he’s discovered once he comes back. Not knowing what exactly Christmas is, Jack tries to figure it out. After figuring it out, he decides to give Santa a break and has him kidnapped by Halloween’s finest trick-or-treaters and Oogie Boogie’s henchmen Lock, Shock and Barrel, so he can take his place. Jack enthusiastically plans and has the whole town helping him from the townspeople making presents, Doctor Finklestein building bone-y reindeers and having Sally making his Santa Clause costume. Sally, the worried rag doll, suspects that a catastrophe is about to happen and does everything she can to dissuade Jack from his plan who of course doesn’t listen to her warning. As Santa Clause, Jack Skellington delivers presents to all children in Christmas Town and they’re not happy about that, so the military shoots at this shamelessly imposter. He realizes who he is and that he has to do something. Once back in Halloween Town, he must hurry to not only save Sally, who tried to save Santa, but also the man himself from Boogie’s clutches.
Even though, I haven’t read a manga in quite a while, I instantly knew how to read it. I love that it’s explained how to read a manga for everyone who hasn’t read a manga before. (It’s read in the Japanese style. You have to open this manga at the “back” and turn the pages “forward”. The pictures and the speech bubbles within the pictures are also read from top right to bottom left.) Knowing that, it was easy getting into the story, also because I already knew the story. At the back, all main and side characters are introduced which I loved. The beautiful illustrations are by Jun Asuka and are black and white which makes sense since it’s a manga. Having watched the film simultaneously to reading the manga, I wondered if the songs were included in some way and they are by having the characters saying them. If you’re familiar with the film and its music, you recognize the songs immediately. At first, I missed the song Poor Jack but it’s shown in a flashback in the manga, so I’m good because I love the song, just like all the other songs from the soundtrack. Just like in the stop-motion film, the love story between Sally and Jack is only shown in brief but sweet moments.
The Nightmare Before Christmas manga was a nice read for in between and definitely put me in the Christmas spirit more.
The artwork would be a 4 or 5, the story as written would be a 3 or 4.
This was very cute but while reading it, I felt like it might have been translated to Japanese and then back into English. It felt a bit clunky at points and there was a point where Sally was called Sandy. If I had never seen the movie, not seen the movie first, or fallen in love with the songs from the movie; this little manga would be a great introduction to The Nightmare Before Christmas. I just found myself start reading lyrics to a song, and then an off line or an abridged version threw me off. Again, it was very cute and the artwork is amazing-- the point where Jack is shot out of the sky(120-121) is portrayed very well.
This was my first Manga book I have read. My junior high students have been fascinated by this genre for the past several years and I have been intrigued to try it. I am OCD so the concept of essentially reading backwards right to left was a bit confusing at first. I love this story by Tim Burton and bought this for my classroom at the school book fair. I decided to give it a try. I did like it...but part of it could be due to the story. If you like the movie/story then you might enjoy this version if you are new to Manga.
So fun. I noticed a little typo on page 85. Dr. Finklestein is making a new companion and says “My next creation will be nothing like Sandy”. I think it’s supposed to say My next creation will be nothing like Sally.
Super adorable rendition of my favorite movie! Love that some liberties were taken, but just few enough to stay true to the source material. Happy to have this as part of my collection.
Thank you for such an amazing Christmas present, my love. I had a smile on my face while reading this book, it was such a sweet and thoughtful gift. I love you princess. Merry Christmas!
