POWERS ARE RISING. AND SECRETS ARE JUST AS DEADLY.
Successfully obtaining the chalice in Noel has put Mellana at risk. Prince Lorian has ordered everyone to turn over those who possess gifts, and a bounty looms over her head. Mellana may have the help of her friends, but when trouble strikes, the group finds themselves separated. Stumbling upon a hidden fortress filled with people who have powers like herself, she learns Lorian isn't the only one she needs to fear.
In search of the next article, Emery’s Emerald, Mellana makes it to the kingdom of Emery. But when the Queen and article come up missing, all eyes are on her sister, Princess Opal, who has a deadly obsession with snakes and mirrors. Making Opal a deal, Mellana agrees to find the article in exchange for protection. When the deal creates a countdown, Mellana must deliver her side of the bargain before her reality becomes twisted, and her plans of stopping Lorian are shattered.
Oh my goodness! I had the chance to read the first book in this series back in March, and ever since then, I've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the second book. Now that I've received the e-book directly from the author, I couldn't be happier (The perks of running a book tour company!).
Let's dive back into the book itself. The cliffhanger ending has left me in awe, but at the same time, I have to admit I hate it. I'm desperate to know what happens next! While the pace of the book was a tad slow for my liking, it managed to keep me engaged throughout. I can honestly say I didn't get bored in any chapter.
The introduction of new characters like Neeko, Neena, and Ezzek added an intriguing element to the story. I'm secretly rooting for Neena and Ezzek, as well as Jewels and Zie to end up together. The chemistry between Krispin and Mellana is also something I really enjoyed. And let's not forget about Minnie! I'm eager to learn more about that fascinating character.
The jaw-dropping revelation about Zie towards the end left me stunned. I could go on and on, but I don't want to accidentally reveal any spoilers in my excitement. All I can say is that this book is truly a fantastic read. I highly recommend it to all young adult fantasy lovers out there.
It's always awesome when the sequel is even better than the first book, especially when you really liked the first one!!! So much action, and great addition to the story. But that cliffhanger ending though!!! Got me begging for book three and the second one JUST came out.
Talk about loving the second book more than the first. This book was that for me. I re-read the first book and then continued with the second, and I loved every second of it.
Summary: This book starts right where we left off in book one, with Mellana and the others still discovering their powers. In this book, we follow the gang as they try to solve the quest that was entrusted to them and obtain the items required. In order to do that, Mellana needs to learn more about Rose and her heritage, which takes her and her friends on a dangerous path where they cannot trust anyone. Additionally, they are also hunted by Lorian, as he has ordered everyone who possesses gifts to turn themselves over.
To obtain the next item, they visit the kingdom of Emery, where they have to face another challenge as the queen herself has been captured by her wicked sister and the item is nowhere to be found.
Plot and Writing: The plot keeps you on your toes. I could not guess or predict any twist or turn that happened throughout the book. This book triggered my notalgia as it took me back to the books that I used to read about a group of kids on a quest. The writing is whimsical, which suits the world that the author has built. The mirror world that is introduced in this book is mind-blowing, and I really loved that part of the quest. We get multiple POVs here, which I definitely enjoyed as it gave the individual a lot more character and depth. I particularly liked Jewel's POV, as I always wanted to know what she was thinking.
Characters: I once again loved all characters, even the newly added ones, with Jewels obviously being my favorite. I love the conflict and the motivations that the author has given to each and every character, even the villains.
Relationships and Romance: As stated above, every character in this book has their own motivations, which makes them form unique and realistic relationships with each other. The bond between each character is a very real relationship that we form with people in our day-to-day lives. The romance here is not at all spicy, is a slow burn, and takes place in a very natural way—no tropes or insta romance—that I adored thoroughly.
Recommendation: This book is for everyone who enjoys fantasy, with a group on a quest told in a whimsical way.
I received an ARC of this book, for an honest review.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Spice level: 0/3 Genres: YA, fantasy Tropes: coming of age, secret powers, hidden backstories, found family/ragtag team
Mellana Goodwick is finally old enough to attend the annual ball in her kingdom. However, tragedy strikes and the murderous Prince Lorian appears (previously thought to be dead, or at least missing) with a plan to take over the kingdom.
To complete this plan, he will need the magical articles from each region. Mellana and her newly formed ragtag group of friends are intent of stopping him, which means they have to find the articles first.
Throughout the series, Mellana and her friends learn more about their newly acquired magical abilities, and how to harness the power, all while trying to evade Prince Lorain and his cronies (who are after them because of their powers). They uncover secrets about the previous rulers of the kingdom, and Mellana uncovers secrets regarding her parents.

I think this series has a unique concept, and the potential to be really good. The characters are interesting, and have a lot of secrets that have yet to be revealed. The main quest of the series also sets it up to be a 5-8 book series. It is clear that the author has a vision for what the world looks like and the rules that govern this world.
However, I had trouble getting into this series. I felt like a lot of people were introduced pretty fast, which made it a bit hard to keep track of. The main groups of teens start traveling together, and it becomes obvious that many secrets are being kept from each other. They all seem to acknowledge this, but they don’t seem to care? This doesn’t seem realistic to me.
Some of the world-building aspects were confusing as well, such as the details behind the powers manifesting (like why it’s only some people), and their plan to “save the world”. Normally I would be fine with a bit of confusion, because things are usually made more clear later, but the way these topics kept getting brought up again and again without additional clarification did make it hard for me to get into the story.
I think, because I could tell that the first couple books were setting this up to be a multi-book series, I expected the world building to be better (and set a stronger foundation). I will note that I liked the second book better than the first, and even the second half of the second book better than the first half.
I definitely recommend checking this series out if you like fantasy books; I have a feeling that the series will continue to get better as more books are written.
Thank you to Plunge into Books Tours for a copy of both of these books to read and review.
I definitely enjoyed this book more than the first. The world-building seemed stronger in this one and there was a lot more detail regarding the magic abound.
The pacing of the story was a lot stronger and definitely pulled me along for the ride. I have to say, I think Jewels character was my favourite, her personality came out way more in this book and I really liked her development.
There was more action and the climax of the book was strong, with great description and the end did leave me going "I need the next book!"
However, there were some issues which is why I dropped a star. During the first half of the book, there seemed to be a ton of missing words. Just the odd single word missing from a sentence that made it a little jarring. It felt like every page seemed to have that happen at the beginning and broke the flow of the writing.
There was a misspelling of a character's name and some really weird descriptions for mundane things, for example, when Zie frown, rather than just stating that, there are like 2 lines describing it. Rather than it adding visual value it just felt clunky.
There are definitely times when 'tell' is fine over 'show' and these micro descriptive moments are when it works better to tell. Especially when some other, more dynamic moments didn't seem to always have as much description as they could.
There were also some continuity issues, for example
It's not a big thing, but it did seem quite noticeable to me especially since we had just been reminded only a few pages earlier.
Overall, I did enjoy the story and it kept me reading and wanting to know more about the characters which are what you always want. I will be reading book two.
I was given an eARC of this book, with the option of leaving a review.
The Royal Blood Series is a fantastic, nostalgic YA fantasy with a well-thought world, unique magic system, myriad of interesting characters, and a cozy, comforting voice. Book books have been fabulous, but here are some standout things I loved from Book 2:
🌟Jewels's POV!! She is fierce, awesome, snarky, and it was a joy to read as her. In fact, I'd love to read an entire series as her 🌟Neeko -- little sh*t -- adore his sass and the dynamic he adds to the group 🌟THE SLOW BURN ROMANCE -- people are getting f-e-e-l-i-n-g-s for each other, and those damn NEAR KISSES had me every time (but were totally worth the payoff) 🌟Higher and higher stakes - death is on the table and the severity of the situation Mel and her friends have found themselves in really comes through in this one. The action sequences are gold! 🌟Family secrets and motives -- this plot keeps me guessing. I have so many theories, and I can't wait to see how it all unfolds. You really feel like you're in Mel's shoes, trying to understand the bigger picture right along with her 🌟So many new characters -- Adina does an incredible job of seamlessly introducing new characters while helping the reader keep them all straight. The cast keeps evolving and sucking the reader deeper and deeper into this ever-expanding world 🌟The same lovely, descriptive, varied writing style I loved from Book 1. Adina's writing is effortlessly beautiful with great imagery. This world is alive and immersive, and the writing is never dull 🌟This is not a copycat book -- the world and magic system are unique, and the plot stands on its own without having to rely on romance (though the romance in this one is definitely an added bonus!) 🌟The world beyond the mirror 🌟THAT ENDING!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
This series has this great nostalgic quality that reads like something that could have been a teenage classic for me, while at the same time feeling fresh and new. Adina has a warm, welcoming voice, and her careful crafting of language comes through in every single sentence of this book. I love this series more and more, and after the ride I just had, I cannot wait to get my hands on Book 3.
A sequel that might be better than its predecessor!
Don’t get me wrong, I adored Secrets of a Rose. But Eyes of a Snake took everything I loved about book 1 and turned it up to 10.
This will be a spoiler-free review because…I want y’all to read it for yourselves. LOL.
But we pick up with Mellana and the gang as they journey to the kingdom of Emery to search for the next article. You get a bit to reacquaint yourself with the gang before the shit hits the fan and the crew is separated. From that point on there are oodles of twists and turns and many new characters to meet. Not to spoil anything, but one new arrival in particular (Neeko) will have you feeling a wide range of emotions…including hatred at one point. And Jewels not only continues to be my favorite, but she gets some moments in this book where she really shines.
The stakes are higher in this book, and you really start to see Mellana grow into herself as she’s forced to navigate around the countless, tricky obstacles that stand between her and her goals. The world-building goes deeper. You see more magic, interact with more people from different parts of this world, and get more history. And the action is *chef’s kiss.*
The last quarter of the book is especially mind-blowing as you meet the slithery villain and her magic mirror. Oh, the mirror…and that ending!!!! I wish I could say more. But I won’t! I promised this would be spoiler free.
Long story short: this series is a classic (and almost nostalgic) YA fantasy that reminds me SO MUCH of the classics I used to read as a kid (think Robin McKinley, Tamora Pierce, etc.). It’s fun. It’s exciting. It focuses heavily on the bonds of friendship. And it’s got a kick-ass magic system. I can’t recommend this series enough!
Synopsis: Mel and her friends are on the search for the next article. As they scour the kingdoms for clues, they must avoid Lorian and his followers. This is easier said than done. The friends fall under attack and are separated. While they look for Emery’s Emerald, they must also find a way back to each other. Deals will be made and family secrets will be uncovered.
Thoughts: I was given an ARC of “Eyes of a Snake” via ebook for an honest review.
This story may have a slow start, but the ending is action-packed. Part three was by far my favorite. We get another glimpse into the complexity of the magic system and it was fascinating.
I was so happy to see my favorite characters again. As Mel’s powers develop, so do her feelings for another. It was nice getting a little bit of romance, without it taking over the story. While Mel and Krispin are my favorite characters, I found myself really liking Jewels in this book. I especially liked the chapters from her perspective, which rounded out her character. I also liked the addition of Neena and Ezzek to the story and hope to see more of them in book three.
On a side note, this book did have some weird formatting. I’m assuming that is from it being an ebook.
Overall, I can’t wait to read the third book in the series. I would recommend this book to those who like fantasy and adventure.
Thank you so much Adina Chiles for letting me read the eARC of Eyes of A Snake.
I loved Secrets Of A Rose and I couldn't wait to jump back into the story with Eyes of A Snake. I loved how this story separates the characters from each other but keeps the story intact. Two new adventures playing side by side on the same quest was fantastically played out. Eyes of A Snake felt more grittier than Secrets Of A Rose, it felt like it's growing not only in characters but with the depth of the story too. The build up and quest creating a more adult feel, the characters are growing with a maturity that brings the whole novel to another level. The new additions to the story worked really well bringing along new betrayals with them and creating a connection with the reader. The flow of the story just rolled along with the anticipation of what would happen next. I love the way the writing brought it altogether and that there's still mysteries we need to figure out and that ending!! What is going on!! I can not wait for the next book.
Eyes of a Snake by the wonderful Adina Chiles is the sequel in an amazing series that any fantasy lover (especially YA fantasy lovers) must pick up for yourself!!
Eyes of a Snake continues to follow Mellana Goodwick and her friends in their quest to collect the articles from each kingdom to stop Lorian and his destruction! This books sees even more action and more magic as these wonderful characters learn more about themselves and their powers.
Readers will fall further in love with these characters and the interesting world Adina built. The build up in this book takes a little time, but the pay off is well worth it. And oh my god that ending?!?! Talk about a cliff hanger! Waiting for the next book might just kill me!
Seriously this book series is such a fun read! Very reminiscent of fantasy series of my childhood and great for any YA fantasy lovers! I highly recommend picking it up, especially when this book releases on the 19th!!
I feel like the first book served as an introduction to getting to know Mellana, Lorian, and the rest of the characters, and this second book is full of action and a very well-written and interesting adventure.
It's filled with unexpected twists and reveals secrets about characters that we had no clue about. And Mellana's growth was fantastic, it's very well done. She's a main character that you don't get bored with because she develops a lot in these two books.
I liked this book much more than the first one, although the first one is super interesting and captivating right from the start. I really enjoy the friendship that develops among the characters, as they are always there for each other.
It aims to be a great saga, very engaging, and although I read the book to write a good review, I have it noted down to re-read both books during peaceful moments because it's a saga meant to be enjoyed along the way.
If you have not read SECRETS OF A ROSE, you should and THEN READ THIS!!!
If you’re looking for YA Fantasy, filled with magic, secret plots, political intrigue, high adventure, fierce friendship, lost royalty and the kind of page turning excitement that makes you carry on reading, well into the night, when you know you should be sleeping, then you MUST read EYES OF A SNAKE, the latest installment in The Royal Blood Series, it is FANTASTIC!!
Mel and her friends are now on a quest, to the kingdom of Emery, in search of a sacred article, but get separated along the way. Mel will now have to face many obstacles such as being kidnapped, being betrayed by those she thought she could trust, not to mention being hunted along the way, all while trying to find and save her friends that were taken.
Expect even more action and magic, as this book series goes along, with Mel and her friends continuing to learn more about their powers and what they are capable of, especially when the ones they love are in danger.
I love this series so far! The descriptions are so strong that it's like I can see the scene playing out in my head! The character development is superb! Like they all have grown and matured while still holding onto what makes them, them. Really enjoyed the new characters, too, and seeing them interact with the MCs so vastly different from one another. Oh my gosh, how can I forget that foreshadowing from the last book to this one! I knew that damned mirror was important, but I didn't think it was that important. Or that it was going to play such a vital role. Which leads me to the ending. THAT ENDING!? I have no words! I'm intrigued and scared to see how the next books go for literally everyone in the book!
The ending 😳 This story picks up we’re the last one ends. It has the same adventure style as the first but more in depth on the struggles each character endures. Neeko Neeko Neeko is all I’m gonna say😶 The group of friends start off together and then get separated and that’s when we really see what each character really is. The author is genuine to her readers and is always welcome New fans on her Instagram.
I become a fan of hers through the first book and have seen loved supporting and seeing her grow.
I am an Arc reader. That means I received an early copy to provide the author with my honest input and help provide any insight on things like spelling errors.
I'll start off with the only thing I don't like, which is why I took off a star : we only get to one land in the book, when there are multiple articles to find. I'd love it more if we could at least get two articles, which makes the story a bit long BUT the pacing in the writing makes it enjoyable nevertheless. And I was NOT expecting that ending, so many things happened that I don't know if I can wait for book 3 ! You know you got me sucked into the book when I say things out loud while reading... I also found it interesting to get a second POV near the end, it made complete sense due to the circumstances. The final battle scene ? Fascinating and unexpected. I need more !
Just like that and I am sad again cause as I tried to take my time I just couldn’t help myself LOL. This was amazing ride and I can’t wait for more. I highly recommend starting this series you won’t regret it I promise.
QOTN: “shared blood doesn’t make a person trustworthy.”
Still looking for her mother and the artifacts to take back her home, Mellana’s journey through the realm shows her a life she never knew her mother had and secrets lurking behind every corner. Relationships are evolving and changing. Powers are growing and a cliff hanger ending makes you wonder— whose side is Rose really on?
Oh where to start….. this book is a roller coaster ride I have so much emotions wrapped up in these characters that I just want to scream and cry….. which shows the depth of this book. I am completely hooked on this series and to say I can’t wait for the next book is a gross understatement!!!!!
The friendships in this book read true and sweet they are natural and the love and loyalty that they have is so amazing. I am squealing for joy over the romance building in this book as I was so ready for it!!!! I mean finally!!!!
Thank you Adina Chiles for a wonderful book and keep up the great work!!!
I love a good series, but sometimes the rest fall short after book 1, but that's not the case with this book. Adina Chiles has done an amazing job that these books flow perfectly. I am so excited for book 3, and where she takes us next on this adventure.
There is so much to love about the second installment of the Royal Blood series! Eyes of a Snake picks up with Mellana and her friends heading to Emery. This book is packed full of adventure, twists, action, and more magic! There is so much detail put into creating the Barren Realm - I wish I could fall right into setting. I also appreciate there being several strong female characters of all colors leading the way. If you’re looking for a new fantasy series, definitely check this out! I can’t wait to get my hands on Book 3!
