The Seven Deadly Sins are more than just a myth. They're hell, and they're here on earth.
Darius Jones is just trying to survive in a city that doesn't give a damn if he lives or dies, and even though his life is far from perfect, he's found a way to make it matter.

After losing everything he's ever loved, Darius discovers that the world is full of supernatural horrors he never knew existed. He finds himself swept up with the Martyrs, an underground resistance group dedicating to eradicating this evil for good, and he's torn between leaving them behind to rebuild his life from the ground up or joining their ranks for a chance at revenge against the people who burned it down in the first place.
But it doesn't take long for him to realize he wasn't just sucked into this war. He's been part of it from the very beginning...

Terrific story--a real page-turner! I finished it in two sittings, reading late into the night. From the gut-punching opening to the gripping climax whose aftermath promises more excitement as this series develops, Resurrection is a thoroughly enjoyable ride. Hunton has constructed an intriguing premise: a world in which the principles of good (the Virtues) and evil (the Sins) take on host bodies and fight an everlasting shadow war through time. Evil is doing pretty well lately, and an odd organization called the Martyrs is trying to tip the scales in favor of good. But, of course, nothing is that simple. A new player, the kind-hearted Darius, must figure out where he fits in this shadow world he's fallen into, and his choices are not easy. This is a gritty story with plenty of violent action, suspense, and tragedy. I can't wait for the next installment!
I enjoyed this book very much! The entire experience was so unsettling and gut-wrenching it made me feel like I was watching a movie or a show and it only gets scarier and more suspenseful. Author MC Hunton does such an amazing job of putting you in a chokehold with her characters, her stakes, her plots, and even her settings. This futuristic, rugged and sad version of New York was so realistic it felt like I could visit! I loved the road trips, the terrifying Sins (who were just as menacing on the page as they were when people were talking about them) and everything in between! Such a unique and heart pounding novel, I truly liked forward to picking it up and never wanted to put it down (while also wanting to savor it). Needing the second one NOW!
I received a copy of this book for free and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily!!
‘The world’s gone to hell, and it’s only getting worse…’
Respect to everybody to helps orphans and abandoned children. May you be blessed a thousand-fold!
This is realistic enough to be scary. While this is a futuristic paranormal dystopia, there are still people with Sins who are causing damage in the here and now. It’s everybody’s job to do what he or she can to fight the darkness and save the world.
Even though this is a work of fiction, I cannot fathom how anybody can live under such pressure (military, living in hiding, disaster relief, medical, politically unstable areas, etc.): ‘In my world, Mr. Jones, it’s much larger than the loss of human lives. It’s the loss of humanity itself.’
The author has some thought-provoking messages throughout: ‘I’ve found in my time the names we gives ourselves are so much more important than the ones others provide for us.’
‘And being angry about it? Jones, anger is normal. You should be mad as hell this… this disaster fell on your lap, and now you have to be the one to clean up the mess. Get angry. Let yourself get angry. And turn it into something you can use. Your anger can be an anchor or it can be an engine.’
Does Darius have what it takes to be a hero? Let’s find out in ‘Conviction’…
What an amazing book and a perfect start to a series! The world sucks you in with the absolute vivid descriptions of scenery and characters. The story is unique and had enough twists to keep me glued to the pages. Cannot recommend it enough.
What I Did Like: Great opening! I liked Darius right away and following him through the market was a great way to get introduced to the setting. The supernatural twist was explained well. It’s plausible without being heavy handed. It’s interesting and it contains enough that you’re familiar with to hook you in. Plus you realize how much of an expert on the topic you’ve become when something is revealed and you literally GASP. The ending was spectacular. I didn’t have it all figured out, I loved where it is headed, and I’ve already ordered book 2. Well written, well edited, and well formatted.
Who Should Read This One: Dystopian fans. I know normally this isn't what you think of when you think dystopian ... but I think it'll get your attention. Fantasy fans, specifically those who like the addition of epic good/evil creatures who have been alive for centuries.
My Rating: 5 Stars This is absolutely a book I’d feel comfortable handing to someone who doesn’t normally read this genre just because it’s so well done! Seriously great book.
Resurrection is Book #1 in The Martyr Series by M.C. Hinton. This urban fantasy series is set in and around NYC in an alternate future in which the seven deadly sins make an already challenging life all the more difficult for those who must live by their wits. The novel starts strong as we meet Darius Jones and the small group of orphans he shelters as he shows them how to navigate the Williamsburg Bridge Street Market and life. His already difficult existence is turned upside down in short order and he's pulled into the world of The Martyrs, a not-so-non-violent group that attempts to thwart the efforts of the Sins (i.e., Pride, Sloth, Gluttony, Envy, Lust, Greed, Envy, and Wrath) and protect any living Virtue who is brought to their attention and/or placed in their care.
The novel is well written and does quite a lot of world building in short order. It will readily appeal to fans of YA fiction, urban fantasy, and paranormal fiction. The only super annoying thing to me was the constant back and forth between the Underground (multi-leveled hospital and subterranean safe house outside the City) and other locations (e.g., the Martyrs Memorial Garden, the restaurant in Queens, and the safehouse where a Virtue long known to the Martyrs lived in isolation as she studied, wrote, and lived for decades seemingly beyond the reach of the Sins. Without spoiling anything, I found Thorn the most frustrating in her almost teenage hyper-emotional vacillation got super annoying and was only compounded upon learning her backstory. There had to be a better way to deliver some of that plot. The biggest plot detail is readily surmised, but that doesn't ruin the story by any means. My real quibble is just that it was so much driving--reminded me of all the walking in a Robert Jordan book--without it really serving much of a purpose. For folks with the resources at the Martyrs' disposal, they seemed to take a lot of stupid risks.
All told, I will read more in the series, and I wish the author well in her self-publishing journey. I am glad my husband met her at a Game con and came home with this first in her Martyr Series.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This one took extra time for me to fully savor. I usually gravitate towards feel-good romance and comedies. Well, let me tell you, Resurrection is none of that! Some well placed humor and a couple feel good moments don't cancel out what a wild ride you're in for with Resurrection: Book 1 of the Martyr Series.
I've been a fan of MC Hunton's writing since we were kids, and it only got better over the years. Way Better.
Resurrection is an unstoppable story that pulls the reader down along with Jones into the war of morality. Once you're in, there's no getting out.
A fantastic fusion of folklore and fantasy, Resurrection is packed with incredible imagery and intellectual character development. Even when I'd slam it closed, avoiding it for days on end, it captivated my thoughts.
Clever world building and dialog painted vivid, engaging images.
I'm not soon to shake Resurrection, but thankfully, there are 3 more books in the series.
If you love it dark, gripping, and intriguing- pick up this series TODAY!
MC Hunton has crafted a world and characters that feel both familiar and refreshingly unique. But what truly elevates this series is Mx. Hunton’s writing style. It’s lyrical and evocative, pulling you into the story with stunning prose. Take this passage, for instance:
“Darius’s chest constricted tight around his lungs. His heart. The aching, pitted loss nestled deep within his soul. He couldn’t breathe. Everything came crashing down around him, and the numbness melted off like hot wax, exposing him, making him feel raw and open.” (52)
Chills.
There’s a ton of dialogue and the spiritual themes are abundantly clear, but it seems like the author at least attempts to not bash you over the head with it.
All that to say, as soon as closed Book I, I immediately ordered II, III, & IV (and the accompanying novelette) so it’s safe to say I’m hooked! Looking forward to seeing how they continue to develop this world.
Wow! Unlike anything I’ve ever read before! This dystopian thriller pulled me in from the start. I absolutely loved the unexpected twists and turns the story took. The concept with the deadly sins and virtues was unique and I really enjoyed it!
Darius was an easy character to get behind. He was a reluctant hero that was trying to survive and find his footing in an unfamiliar situation. I really enjoyed his heart and willingness to help.
The story itself was paced well and was full of plenty of action and drama to keep me entertained and hooked the whole way through.
If you love dystopian supernatural reads, found family, twist on the seven deadly sins, hidden world in plan sight vibes, immortal characters, morally grey characters, unique twists, action, and more than check this one out.
Resurrection by MC Hunton is book 1 in The Martyr Series by the author. I loved this book from the very beginning. This is a dark fantasy read about Virtues and the Sins, aka good and evil. Darius is our MC who lives in a very dystopian world. He takes care of the orphaned children, which immediately made me connect with him as a reader. I was so upset when what happened to Darius and the orphanage happened. I loved the ending as it opens up another book in the series, which I will definitely be reading asap! The story is rich with a tremendous back story, an amazing built fantasy world, and much more! I highly recommend this book series to a fan, like myself, of dark fantasy books and also who love a great good and evil story.
It has been a while where I have not been able to put a book down. The just one more chapter leading to another, followed by another until your eyes are blurry and your head aches. I was not expecting the big reveal at the ending and I am starving to start on book 2 in this series. You simply must read this and find out about this story yourself. I was brought into the emotions of Darius and cared about his priorities in this story. I worried with him, felt his anger and pain and even the desperation of holding on to that last little bit of hope. Excellent writing and I highly recommend this book.
Wow! I love this book! The characters are so real And carefully crafted I feel like I know them and I'm going to miss them until The next book comes out. The story is about urban struggle with with just enough Realism To give it meaning Add a touch of mysticism to give it hope.🤗 I'm so excited to have a new author that I can trust to spin a truly amazing story And I can't wait Until book two arrives!!!
I'll say this, despite reading the synopsis - there was absolutely NO WAY that I'd have guessed or taken this book the way it's written. Each time you think you've perhaps riddled out what's next - an absolute twist will grab you! I was thrilled with this read.
Welcome to futuristic New York City, where the seven deadly sins are alive and winning a war against mankind. Entered Darius Jones, a man who shelters orphans and teaches them how to get by. He joins a group called the martyrs, who are the last line of defense against the sins.

The story follows Darius Jones, who becomes involved with a group of people called the Martyrs after the sins Pride and Envy, in human hosts, destroy his home and family. Well written, the story was an enjoyable, easy read with interesting characters.
I wasn't enthralled at the start of reading this book and almost gave up on it. I'm glad that I didn't as I ended up enjoying this fast paced paranormal book.
Thanks to Booksirens and the author for giving me the opportunity to read this. This is my honest review.
M.C. Hunton's debut novel in the Martyr Series starts with a bang and never lets up. Tons of action, mysterious characters, surprising about-turns and reveals (which, of course, I can't reveal), and an underlying theme of loyalty won and lost.
The violence can be graphic at times, but then again, the Seven Deadly Sins in human form ... do we really expect them to play nice?
Darius Jones is living on NYC giving abandoned children a safe home. When kids keep disappearing. Strange things keep happening. One day everything goes wrong and Darius meets a group called The Martyrs who are fighting the bad people called The Sins. They are named after the 7 deadly sins. The Sins have control over the city, government, police everything. There are also people that counter the Sins called The Virtues.
“Welcome to our war” - The Underground
Read to find out what Darius uncovers about this new world and himself. This is book 1 in the Martyr series!
I started this as a recommendation reading into it without impression and found it to be quite ruthless and sinister. The conflict and peril within New York City is quite drawing and relevant to what one witnesses. The general struggle throughout the book is well written leaving a desire for a hopeful outcome. Well done, excited to read the next!
Get your hands on this new series NOW if you like fast paced, intense stories with high stakes that somehow also manage to include complex characters and moving relationships. This book will have you on the edge of your seat constantly, but you’ll also find yourself falling totally in love with the characters. MC Hunton has built an intense and thrilling world in this series. She will break your heart, but it’s worth it!! I’d bet my left thumb these books turn into cinema someday (here’s hoping!).
