SPOILER ALERT: This review may contain *** SPOILERS ***
>>Rating: no trigger warnings per author: only a few smarmy looks, nothing graphic, violent death
>>Angst Level: low mostly
>>Source: Borrowed KU [1-19-23] with no expectations of a review. The views and opinions are my own. This was a collection of P&P what-if variations. [12] What-If stories.
[1] An Attempted Compromise: 5-short chapters + an epilogue [1 year later: ended at 9%
“What happens when Caroline Bingley and George Wickham team up to force Darcy into a compromise? Laced tea, an accidental death, and an elopement.”
If Miss Bingley offers you a cup of her special tea, refuse… for the love of… just refuse.
[2] No Less Brittle Than Beautiful: 5-chapters + an epilogue: ends at 17%
“What happens when Lydia Bennet bumps into Mary, sending her crashing into the arms of … George Wickham? The resulting compromise at Aunt Phillips’s card party leads to a ruined reputation and a marriage neither of them wished for. Will Mary and Wickham be able to sort out their differences and find a happily ever after?”
When in company with Lydia Bennet, keep your distance. That is if you know what is good for you… stay as far away from her as possible, especially when she has been drinking the party punch.
[3] Keep Your Breath to Swell Your Song: 5-chapters + and a short epilogue: ends at 24%
“The Bonnet Family Singers are known throughout the ton for their beautiful voices. Though their performance for the prince regent threw them into the spotlight, they have chosen to keep their identities a secret. The rumors say they are daughters of a gentleman, but no one knows for sure. All Mr. Darcy knows is that there is something familiar about the way Miss Elizabeth
Bennet sings at Lucas Lodge.”
The Bonnet Family Singers received a command performance… literally from the Prince Regent. You dare not refuse. Darcy and Bingley were in the audience. The ladies wore deep bonnets and masks to hide their identities. No one knew who they were. Fast forward and you have Darcy putting the pieces together at Lucas Lodge.
[4] But Then the Dragons Came: 5-chapters + a short epilogue: ends at 32%
“Rumors that dragons have been spotted in the north have hit Meryton, but Elizabeth Bennet is sure that the sightings are nothing more than hysteria. Plagued with migraines since her eighteenth birthday, she is struck down by one at the Meryton assembly, preventing her from dancing. This is cruelly remarked on by Mr. Darcy, a newcomer to the neighborhood. Before she can confront him about his behavior, a dragon is spotted flying over the town, and everyone panics. How will the arrival of dragons change Pride & Prejudice?”
Don’t get your dragons in an uproar. No pun intended… ah, heck, pun intended.
[5] Nothing But Officers in Her Head: 5-chapters + a short epilogue: ended at 40%
“Catherine Bennet, aka Kitty, is known as being her younger sister’s shadow. But what if that is all a disguise to hide who she truly is—one of the most renowned cryptographers of the Napoleonic Wars?”
In her sister’s shadow… that’s code for trouble.
[6] In His Nightcap and Powdering Gown: 5-chapters + a short epilogue: ends at 49%
“Mr. Bennet falls and bumps his head after teasing his wife about not visiting Mr. Bingley. When he awakens, he is just as flighty and unstable as Mrs. Bennet! Dressing in his nightcap and powdering gown while calling for his salts, how will Mr. Bennet’s new personality affect the behavior of his wife and daughters?”
Mr. Bennet had a PJ Day… or week.
[7] Punish Him for Such a Speech: 5-chapters + an epilogue: ended at 57%
“Elizabeth Bennet is stuck at Netherfield, tending to her elder sister. Tired of being the object of disdain for both Mr. Darcy and Miss Bingley, Elizabeth gets her revenge in a unique manner—flirting brazenly with Mr. Darcy one evening as she and Miss Bingley take a turn about the room. How will Mr. Darcy react?”
Slight religious element. A Sunday sermon gives Darcy a new perspective on his attitude. There is a different bride for Mr. Collins.
[8] To Yield Readily: 5-chapters + an epilogue: ends at 65%
“Mr. Bingley is a man who is easily persuaded by the strong opinions of his friend and sisters. When he leaves Netherfield Park after hosting a ball, Miss Bingley sends Jane Bennet a letter, which Mrs. Bennet insists is read aloud at breakfast. Upon hearing that his fairest cousin has been abandoned, Mr. Collins offers a proposal of marriage. Mr. Bingley’s return six months later has him discovering a very different Longbourn than the one he saw before. What will he do now that he’s realized he yields too readily to others?”
Whew! This was a tough read. It was also a story where Bingley grew a backbone and took control of his life. He would no longer be influenced by his sisters and friend. I liked this Bingley. It was a somber story but still, gold and silver are refined by fire.
[9] And Then the Murders Began: 5-chapters + an epilogue: ends at 73%
“Netherfield has a reputation for being a haunted manor house. The rumors stem from two centuries of unnatural deaths and horror for each tenant who has resided there. When Elizabeth is invited to stay to tend to her sister Jane, she discovers a murder most foul. Will she and Darcy be able to solve the murder and break the curse? Or are they doomed to suffer the same fate as all the previous inhabitants?”
Boo Spook… or a little shop of horrors?
[10] If Only They’d Had a Son: 5-chapters + an epilogue: ends at 82%
“What if Lydia had been born a boy? Lyndon Bennet has turned out quite wild, having been spoiled by his parents for being the heir who would save them all. What difference will his cruelty and indifference to his elder sisters make in their lives?”
The poor boy turned out exactly as you would expect. LA! What a joke. OK, he never said that but this mini-Lydia was a mess that nearly ruined his family.
[11] Overhearings More to the Purpose: 5-chapters + an epilogue: ends at 90%
“Mrs. Bennet happens to overhear Wickham and the other officers discussing her youngest two daughters in the crudest of terms. When her demands to Colonel Forster are met with the harsh truth, and her insistence to Mr. Bennet that he challenge the officers to a duel is mocked, how will she react?”
Mrs. Bennet overheard what the officers actually thought about her youngest daughters. That conversation sent Mrs. Bennet into a fury. A graphic nightmare sent her into a tailspin. A parlor full of officers was the nail in the coffin. Lydia and Kitty were no longer out. Mrs. Bennet cleaned house and took charge of her youngest daughters. Life at Longbourn took a dramatic turn.
[12] For I Am a Married Woman: 5-chapters + an epilogue: ends at 99%
“William Collins discovered as a youth that some polish and grooming; he could charm ladies as easily as the handsomest gentleman could. When he arrives at Longbourn to choose a wife from his cousins, Lydia is taken in by his compliments and declares that she should be the one to be put forth as Mrs. Collins. Meanwhile, Mr. Collins finds a friend in George Wickham. How will the friendship between these two rakes change the story?”
Lydia and Collins… eeww! Just saying. Slightly disgusting.
