As he vows to help her find a way home, he starts to realize that it won’t be as easy as he’d thought. Because not only are deadly forces scouring the land searching for the feisty lass, but she’s also stolen his heart. Dare Maddy and Deryn risk everything on a second chance at love? Freedom of a Highlander is part of the Arch Through Time, time travel romance series. It can be read as a standalone novel. If you love strong heroes, resourceful heroines, danger, passion and adventure on the path to true love, this is the series for you!
Katy Baker was born in London to an English mother and an American father. She grew up a stone's throw from Hampstead Heath which remains one of her favourite places in the world. During her twenties she spent several years living in San Francisco where she developed an abiding love of bagels before returning to her beloved London. She lives in south London with her husband and a very grumpy bulldog.
Katy's books explore the intricacies of human relationships with plenty of spice thrown in. What would life be without a little spice?

This is an OK time-travel romance, but I did have some issues with it. It gets 3 stars from me.
First off, Maddie was kind of an idiot about not believing she and her son had travelled thru time. I get that it was hard to believe, but the evidence was everywhere, in the way people lived and the way they dressed. I found it hard to believe that it took her about 2/3 of the book before she realized she was no longer in the 21st century. Prior to that, she just assumed that EVERYONE she met had chosen to live "off the grid" without electricity, cell phones, or any modern conveniences at all. That she would believe that was actually kind of ridiculous.
Deryn and Maddie were both likable, and I liked that they quickly learned to work together. It did bother me that he was so determined to never break his vow to his dead wife, and that he still blamed himself for her death.
The story was mildly entertaining, and I always like Irene, so I will read the next in the series -- but I probably would not continue the series if it wasn't free with Kindle Unlimited.
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
Again, I have to say that I love all of Katy Baker's "Arch Through Time" books and this one is no exception. Unlike the other books, this one involves a child. Rory is the four year old son of Madeline Green and Rhodric MacKay, a slimeball from the 15th Century. When Rhodric kidnaps Rory and takes him to the 15th Century, Madeline is able to follow them through the Arch. When she arrives, Rory is nowhere in sight and Madeline finds herself trapped by a raging river where she is rescued by Deryn Stewart.
Deryn agrees to help Maddy find her son and save him from Rhodric. The resulting storyline is very enthralling. Maddy does not believe in time travel but is unable to explain how different things are now. And, being a mother, all she can think about is getting Rory back home and keeping him away from his "father". The relationship between Maddy and Deryn is really well written. As is the rest of the new relationships that Maddy and Rory make with Darla, Craig and their two kids.
Maddy is an architect, which comes in handy improving life at Deryn's farm as well as being useful in the plotline. And, of course, there is a dog named Mara. I wish my dog was that well mannered. Plus, a very cantankerous ram named Surley. This has to become of the best books in this series which is something considering it is the twentieth book in the series. This series could go on for at least another twenty books. It's that good. I highly recommend this book as well as the entire series. Already looking forward to the next book.
I received an ARC from the author. This is a voluntary and honest review.
Maddy Green finds herself in fifteenth century Scotland after passing through an arch. She soon finds herself in the middle of something she doesn't understand. She had sworn off relationships after a bad one eft her with a bitter taste, but the man who rescued her is testing her resolve. Deryn Stewart has turned his back on his previous life, but it seems fate isn't through with him. He's vowed to keep Maddy safe and get her home, but he will need to open his heart once again as everything is not as it seems.
I absolutely love this series and this book is no exception. It's well-written with wonderful characters and a well-thought-out, fast-paced plot. The author keeps the series fresh with each book in the series being a compelling read. I was drawn into this captivating tale and kept hooked from beginning to end. There's romance, intrigue, and suspense in this exceptional story. I hope there's more to come from this series which has become a favorite. I highly recommend both book and series which I think is best read in order, although you could read each book on its own.
Arch Through Time continues to be one of my favorite time travel romance series. "Freedom of a Highlander" is another well written story with wonderful characters. If you have read the previous books then you know all about maintaining the balance, this story has a heavier weight on that and there are some unexpected twists with the unseeley fae. The story pulled me in right from the start. I enjoyed watching the relationship between Maddy, her son Rory, and Deryn unfold. The bonds of friendship and loyalty with Deryn's neighbors and seeing the other members of The Order. I always enjoy getting a glimpse of the women who have come through the Arch before and seeing what new "modern" technologies will be incorporated into their lives. It is hard to believe that this is the 20th book in the series, I can't wait for what comes next.
I received an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Maddy Green is an architect who has a four year old son who she loves very much. When her ex suddenly turns up and takes her son from school she follows them and after going under a bridge she finds herself in another century.
Deryn Stewart is still grieving the loss of his wife and just wants to be left alone. When he finds a woman alone needing help to find her son he does his best to help her despite the many obstacles in the way.
I really enjoyed this book.

I received a free copy of this book and freely and honestly leave my review.
These are such fun time travel stories. Mandy an architect from the 21st century is thrust back in time by her sons father and finds herself quite literally in a fight for their lives. Lucky for her Daryen, a handsome highlander is quickly ably to come to their rescue. There are many elements that keep the reader engaged as the tale progresses. Excited for the next book in the series.
This is Katy Baker 20 book in this series, about time travel to another century about Scotland! This is about Maddy Green and Deryn Stewart story, when Maddy travels to the 15 century, and Deryn Stewart who wants to be left alone by himself, enjoyed this book very much, kept my attention, the details of story was excellent. Would recommend this book and all the series books! Was given the book as a ARC for honest review, very good story.
A child is kidnapped across time. His mother went through time to retrieve him. Maddy and Rory are children of the twenty first century. Will their destiny be in the present or the past? I received this complimentary copy from the author. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
Another thoroughly enjoyable time travel romance. Maddy Green chases after her ex boyfriend as he takes her son Rory. She follows them under an arch and finds herself in the 15th century with her son no where in sight. Deryn Stewart comes to her rescue. Time travel, romance and the Fae make a powerful combination for a great story.
Couldn't put it down. Another fantastic story by Katy Baker which had me reading into the wee hours until I finished it. Hope more books in this series will follow.
Another exceptional read to the series. I am hoping it doesn’t end with this one! Deryn and Maddy’s story was filled with adventure, romance and steam. Read it way too fast. This will not disappoint
I really enjoyed this book, as I have enjoyed the whole series. There is something about Katy Baker's stories that keep you reading till after midnight! Keep going Girl!!
Child of two times, Rory. How exciting! I bet that will be a whole story to come. This story about Deryn and Maddy was full of adventure and romance. I love this series
I have enjoyed this book. Irene always has a person she knows has to change the balance. Deryn and Mataline fell in love but Rory was going to keep them in both worlds.
Another great time travel story. Ms. Baker has a way to carry you along on an adventure like no other. One situation to another makes a person dream about meeting Irene and launching on an adventure of your own.
I recommend this book to any and all who enjoy time travel with a touch of magic & set in the highlands of Scotland. I look forward to each new book in this series. As long as Katy Baker writes them, I will buy them.
As Maddy follows her husband and son to the past she has to fight to keep her son. Maddy’s husband is a disinherited and wants his son to do very bad things. The love of Maddy and her son helps to justify peace.
This book kept me interested from the beginning. It had enough suspense to keep you wondering how it would end. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as much as I have.
