Listen to Your Day: The Life-Changing Practice of Paying Attention

Rate this book
What are you supposed to do with your life? What deserves your limited reserve of energy, attention, and time? What's making you anxious or frustrated right now? What would make you happy and fulfilled?

The world is shouting its answers to these questions, but the real answers are quieter--and right in front of you. They are in the details of your day, every day. But we usually look right past them. Or we are simply so distracted we've lost the ability to see and hear the life going on right in front of us. If we're not intentional about changing this trend, this "inattentional blindness" can rob us of years of joyful productivity. But when we learn to observe the details of our days, we discover new lenses through which to see and new practices of paying attention that add meaning to life.

Stop drifting. Stop worrying. Stop living distracted. Walk purposefully through life with a firm grasp on what's important to you and what you're working toward--all by listening to the details of your day.

Occasional interesting tip or approach, but it does drag on, and the recurring "Glory to God" themes and bible quotes are a colpete turn off!

I am reviewing a copy of Listen tonYour Day through Baker Books and Netgalley:

This book asks the questions What are you supposed to do with your life? What deserves your limited reserve of energy, attention, and time? What's making you anxious or frustrated right now? What would make you happy and fulfilled?

The answers to the above questions are being shouted by the world , but the real answers are quieter and right in front of you.

Listen to Your Day Reminds us to stop drifting, Stop worrying. Stop living distracted. Walk purposefully through life with a firm grasp on what's important to you and what you're working toward--all by listening to the details of your day.

I give Listen To Your Day five out of five stars!

Paul Angone has written a book that I firmly believe everyone of my generation needs to read (and if we’re being honest, anyone living in this day and age would benefit from it!). “Listen To Your Day: The Life-Changing Practice of Paying Attention” is a truly incredible book for two reasons: its profoundness, and its simplicity. With his signature wit and wisdom, Paul helps us to uncover what is holding us back from our purposes, what is hindering us from whole-body health, and what is keeping us from truly feeling happy with the trajectory of our days.

In so many ways, the answer is the same…. We are living distracted, and we need to start paying attention.

Yep, that’s it! That’s the profoundly simply thesis of this book, but as we unpack what this truly means and looks like in our daily lives, we find that it is SO TRUE. We live in an age where distractions are taking over our lives, hindering us from the power and purpose God has for us.

I value this book and the truth it represents so greatly; each chapter is like focusing on a new facet of a gem, as we dig deep into why we live distracted, and how we can overcome this - and how the practice of simply paying attention will radically change everything. Just a couple of the ideas that stood out for me within these chapters were: the importance of doing physical things in the physical world (things that engage all our senses and use our hands), and the realization that coming to terms and wrestling with our past memories is needed before we can truly focus on being present in the moment today.

Part 1 of the book was excellent, but Part 2 was even better. Called “Cultivating Mindset Models”, this section helps us to view our days through the lenses of different mindsets, such as that of a Farmer, a Writer, and a Monk! Each one is thought provoking and mentally challenging.

Without question I highly recommend “Listen To Your Day” for so many reasons… the main ones being: it is needed, it is relevant, and it will truly change our culture if we allow it to. Thank you Paul Angone for once again bringing such valuable and insightful wisdom to the table, as we learn to navigate this journey called Life in a way that honors the gifts God has given us.

In Listen to Your Day, Paul Angone gives us thoughtful tips and advice on finding true purpose in our lives. Not with some new, complicated program or philosophy- but by teaching us how to listen and pay attention to the details of our day.

In this quick read, packed full of wisdom and action items, you will learn the value of truly paying attention. Limiting distractions, knowing what is important to our soul, and living a life that focuses on those things. Paul Angone's Godly perspective is refreshing and inspiring for people from all walks of life and all ages.

I appreciated that this book was not theoretical or conceptual, but instead was straight forward and practical with a framework anyone can employ starting today. A quote from the book says it perfectly: "No self-help book can you give you the exact formula for leading a successful, fruitful, meaningful life. A book can, and should, help you lay the groundwork." He goes on to say that how you build the house will be based on the framework you have been building your life on.

I recommend this book for anyone who feels they are running on a hamster wheel, feeling unfulfilled and distracted in this world that is shouting at us from all directions- the ideas and suggestions in this book can help you pay attention to your day in such a way that you are living for the things that are most important to you.

Someone I follow recommended this book. It had good stuff in there, just pretty much like most self-help books. I have found others more helpful. However, I think it would be great for someone in their 20's (which he says was his goal of his audience) just starting out and needing to learn prioritizing. I also listened to it and only got halfway through before it had to be returned. By the time I got it back, I had forgotten most of the beginning. So that probably has a little something to do with how I rate the book. I am not sorry I listened to it, and I did finish it, but I dont plan to own it or reread it. I probably will recommend it to my young girls, though.

Well, for me personally the entire book has just been a little too motivational rather a purely practical one. The entire concept of the book is clear from the beginning but I was just curious what might the author add to make the book whole. Being aware of my surroundings is the core message of the book and it definitely felt more like a reverberation throughout the book through different lenses. The book per se is not a bad one, it’s just its theme is kind of like too generic I guess and every experience with awareness is different for people. I don’t know if I might recommend this book to anyone, but surely for someone interested to be more present in their day to day activities.

My only complaint was that a prior book authored by Angone was so frequently mentioned as to nearly become redundant... that aside, Listen to Your Day is a great book about paying attention with plenty of action steps.

This book is very detail oriented and provides plenty of help for would-be listeners who have lost their way.

I would recommend this book to the modern generation who have found smart phones and computers rather than actual silence and space in their day.

This was dry, trite, and more theoretical than practical. The first 60% of the book is making a case for why you should be reading the book. I can think of probably a dozen books I'd recommend instead of this (specifically The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, Habits of the Household, The Lazy Genius Way, and Extreme Ownership) and really wish I had put it on my did not finish list.

Favorite non-fiction of the year! Lots of great practical ideas for tuning into your life and away from distractions. I loved the different mindset models. A great book to highlight and markup. I checked out from the library but I'm going to buy a copy to keep. Excellent!

I thought it was pretty good. He pulls ideas from a lot of authors I’ve enjoyed reading like James Clear, Cal Newport, and Dallas Willard. The content is not original, but a good summary of mindset themes and the importance of not letting your phone rule your life.

This was a quick read and had some good advice I had not heard in other “being present” books. Very good book
