Daryl has an obsession with long dead film star Marilyn Monroe (called Maxine Marie in this here fable). He’s a total geek but is fortunate to have Loretta, his real-life, flesh and blood girlfriend, who loves him and tolerates his fixation on Maxine. But when he decides to buy a spendy piece of Maxine memorabilia rather than buy her a birthday present, she stomps off in a huff. Well, wouldn’t you?

So Daryl heads home with his new present to himself and puts on a Maxine film to while away the time. Before long he gets a whole lot more than he paid for when Maxine comes to life and surprises him with some sexy time. Being a fool and all, Daryl cannot resist his fantasy woman, and finds himself in a world of trouble.

Now it’s up to a very pissed off Loretta to save his sorry butt. He’s lucky he had Loretta and not a girl like me because he’d likely be missing an appendage . . .

This was an entertaining little story but it wasn’t even a wee bit scary which was a bit disappointing. There are a few illustrations which was a nice bonus. The characters come across as real people but I think I enjoyed Maxine’s mean girl reactions to current pop culture more than anything else. Her take on Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon Cooper on a t-shirt:

The woman wore a t-shirt with the image of a man’s face—long, thin, unattractive, almost creepy.

Awwww, poor Sheldon.

Paranormal romance really isn't my thing. So for what it was, a perfectly adequate read, nothing special. A man obsessed with a dead Marilyn Monroesque (very much so) celebrity manages to bring her back to life when he acquires a unique piece of memorabilia. His girlfriend and a paranormal leather trench coat wearing (yes, seriously) female kickass special agent must save the day. Apparently, the paranormal investigator is a recurring character for the author. Predictable, decently written, cheesy as to be expected, too silly to be horror, but entertaining enough. Passed a couple of hours.

Ah, the tried and true ghost story. Some malevolent spirit decides to vent its rage and despair on some hapless nobodies who must then battle this other-worldly force to save their own lives and those of the ones they love. It’s been done time and time again—in film, in television, in books. And if R. J. Sullivan’s Haunting Obsession was just more of the same old tropes, I don’t think it would have really caught my interest. But Sullivan has taken old trope and put a new spin on it, which makes Haunting Obsession a delectable read.

And that’s good news for you folks because the publisher, Seventh Star Press, is putting up a paperback copy and two electronic copies of the book for a giveaway. For rules and entry instructions, see the Rafflecopter widget below.

Now as for the book itself… well, instead of trying to describe the plot myself, why don’t I just let the back cover do the talking for me?

“She wants to be loved by you…alone!”

Daryl Beasley collects all things Maxine Marie, whose famous curves and fast lifestyle made her a Hollywood icon for decades after her tragic death. Daryl’s girlfriend, Loretta Stevens, knew about his geeky lifestyle when they started dating, but she loves him, quirks and all.

Then one day Daryl chooses to buy a particularly tacky piece of memorabilia instead of Loretta’s birthday present. Daryl ends up in the doghouse, not only with Loretta, but with Maxine Marie herself. The legendary blonde returns from the dead to give Daryl a piece of her mind—and a Haunting Obsession he’ll never forget!

Of course, it isn’t only a piece of her mind she gives him. He also gets a piece of ass, a brush with death, and a very irate girlfriend. Oh, but let’s not dwell on those details. You want to have something left to read about, don’t you?

So, Maxine Marie is obviously a stand-in for Marilyn Monroe. I mean, the alliterated “M’s” make it obvious enough, but the character’s history and personality mirror the real MM’s life as well (for why Sullivan didn’t use the real Marilyn for his story, see the answer to the question in my recent interview with him). Thus it should come as no surprise that one of the things that makes this novel so entertaining is the way Sullivan taps into the idol worship and sex appeal of a bygone movie icon and weaves it into a sinister ghost story. Even more than that, though, he insightfully captures the loneliness of such a figure and how that loneliness can be transmuted into something hateful and possessive—in life as in death. Kudos there, for sure.

The characters are well-drawn, the type of people you could imagine in every day life, and therefore, the reader winds up identifying with them. Plus, they’re geeks, which warmed my nerdy heart to its icy core. That’s one of the signs of a good writer—someone who can craft believable characters (lies, essentially) and endear them to you. And did I mention the illustrations? That’s one good thing (of many) about Seventh Star Press. They always include some jam-up illustrations in their publications, and these did not disappoint. The writing itself was good—not blow-me-away-good, but good, solid writing. And while the plot itself was a tad predictable, it still entertained, so I’m not one to complain. Overall, I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. It was a good, short read, well-written, entertaining, and innovative.

I received a free copy of this book for review.

Wow, this book is definitely creepy-licious! Daryl is you're typical computer geek who just happens to be obsessed with Maxine Marie, who is obviously based on Marilyn Monroe. Daryl soon finds himself in trouble with his long time girlfriend Loretta after he buys a piece of Maxine Marie memorabilia instead of her birthday present. Soon after the purchase, and subsequent fight with Loretta, Daryl is confronted with the ghost of Maxine Marie who seems very much alive. Agent Rebecca Burton is soon called in to deal with the matter.

This was such a fun read! It was not only super creepy but it was based on an icon that is familiar to everyone. The characters of Daryl and Loretta are your typical young couple dealing with one's obsession with a star that is thought to be out of reach. Its easy to see how Loretta would be hurt by Daryl's choice but she tries to reason that a dead and gone starlett can't compare to flesh and blood. Little does she know how things can change. I love the tactics of Agent Burton. She doesn't do their work for them, only assists and points them in the right direction to fix the problem.

Overall, I loved this read! It was a fun ghost story with a sprinkle of adult fun, making it a not for kids story. But one most adults will enjoy. Its perfect for Halloween.

A short story about a guy called Daryl who has no clue how good he has it with his girlfriend. He does something so stupid she'd have been smart to smack him upside the head and then walk away never to look back. A different story that would have been for sure.

Rj spins quite the tale about Daryl's obsession with a long dead star when she begins to haunts him it's quite the oops I shouldn't have done that except for the sexy time Daryl has with her. Oh my!

My favorite part of the story was when Rebecca Burton came in to the picture as she seamed the only one with some sense in her head. Rj does a great job of making you shake your head at the actions of many of his characters. These silly actions by these entertaing characters lead to the big show down at the end which I enjoyed it was a satisfying end to a fun little story. I look forward to future Rebecca Burton stories.

--Review courtesy from Book & Movie Dimension a Blog--

We all know many of our friends or people that are collectors of Scifi and or memorabilia of certain actors. Daryl Beasley is a guy who has a deep love for a blonde bomshell named Maxine Marie who's our society's equal to Marilyn Monroe. Daryl's girlfriend, Loretta Stevens, tolerates his obsession but lately not as much when Daryl decides to take it up a notch in purchasing a new collector's item that he finds is haunted by his very object of obsession!

The characters in Haunting Obsession soon became friends. Daryl gives you a sense of fondness for him. While his girlfriend, Loretta, is a tough young woman that really has a strong willful personality. She isn't afraid to put a stop to some of Daryl's more outlandish ideas which is refreshing. Now there is a character in particular in Haunting Obsession known as Rebecca Burton who is a freelance agent for the Indiana Special Investigations Unit that happens to be a mysterious woman that is a character sure would like to know more about. Loretta describes her as a character from a 1940's film noir.
Everything about her screamed "G-man", or actually " G-woman"!

Haunting Obsession is a moderately fast read. If your a supernatural or Paranormal Fiction book fan like myself this is the book you will most certainly find to your liking. R.J. Sullivan with writing Haunting Obsession drew some inspiration from idol worship that can easily become an obsession which is a creative, original take on his part.
Before forgetting have to mention that the aforementioned
Rebecca Burton has a past that can be discovered through A Seventh Star Press Single and a Rebecca Burton Short Story available now in E-book format titled Backstage Pass.

Definitely interested in reading Backstage Pass since R.J. Sullivan's Haunting Obsession left a good impression on this book blogger!
Overall: Amazing read!

What a silly and fun read!
This is a ghost story about a nerdy computer guy with an obsession over all things Maxine Marie. He purchases a collectable item which brings along more than he bargained for, the ghost of the 50s pin-up girl he idolizes. Maxine is obviously a stand in for Marilyn Monroe and is a sex symbol who died from a drug overdose fifty years before. She died young, so her ghost is still a bit immature

This book doesn't go too far in depth or description, it goes quickly and doesn't linger on any scene or issue. The story unfolds quickly and before you know it, poor Daryl is on the outs with his girlfriend, but snuggling up to his pin-up girl obsession!?! Like Neil Gaiman's American Gods where gods need prayers and someone thinking about them to "live" ghosts need the same thing to keep hanging out. Maxine, as a sex symbol, has quite a bit of energy to tap into. It leads to some interesting scenes!

I really got into this book when Daryl's girlfriend looks for some help. I really want to check out the websites they refer to, because the help comes from an interesting place which I won't ruin for you. Also, the helper has some interesting talents which are treated a little like magical realism. It was quite enjoyable because it made me question the world and what we know about it just a little bit. I love those shadowy hints of doubt that allows you believe for a even a little bit, that certain things are possible in the real world.

Lots of ghostly fun which makes you think before you wish for things, because you might just get them! I give Haunting Obsession 3.5 blond bombshell stars.

This is a Love Story and a Ghost story. Two kinds of stories I enjoy so bonus that it was both. RJ Sullivan is a master of dialogue. It is one thing I look for and enjoy in a book so I love when dialogue is wonderful. It flowed well it felt like I was listening in on a conversation. It was a short novella but the author took the time to development the characters in a way that there was understanding of them and their personalities. I think I liked the characters because they were so much more real then the average ghost story. Loretta stood up, took action, and did not back down. They were realistic (as much as you can be when up against a souped up overcharged sex icon's ghost) in that their responses made sense. It was told like you would tell someone about a particularly rough day. Rebecca Burton was an awesome character, I fell in love the instant she walked in the coffee shop. I can not wait for more books featuring her. It was haunting. Maxine for all her faults and for all that happened was such a sad creature really. I caught myself tearing up a little. Which screams to be great story. In a word the book is elegant. :)

My review:

Haunting Obsession is a ghostly horror novella written by RJ Sullivan. It is well written, spooky and thought awakening.

Daryl is obsessed by Maxine Marie - an actress from 50s and 60s who is clearly based on Marilyn Monroe. When Daryl buys a memorabilia of Maxine Marie, an item which Maxine Marine owned prior to getting famous, weird things start to happen. Maxine enters Daryl's world in a way which gives a word ghostly a totally other level. Agent Rebecca Burton is brought in to deal with the matter, to help out solving the problems.

Haunting Obsession is wonderfully written novella. The author has created a story with snappy dialogue which is sharp and funny; characters are interesting and the idea of the story is brilliant!

Definitely a great read for horror lovers! I truly enjoyed it!

Haunting Obsession is a sexy, suspenseful, and yes, scary read. RJ Sullivan takes the haunted object trope and turns it on its head. Obsessed fan Darryl finds his wildest dreams come true and turn solid as his favorite screen actress appears from the dead to haunt him. And he very much enjoys this haunting... at first.

I won't spoil this for you, but this is a must read book full of believable characters, tense storytelling and supernatural horror. Pick it up, and you too may discover a haunting obsession.

Very good novella, which is both a love story and a ghost story, all in one. Plus, it plays with our fantasies and what we would do if they came to life. Would it be wonderful, or would it turn horrifying all too quickly?

A+ effort and I thoroughly enjoyed the read.

This book was very interesting. Crazy and weird at times but it kept my attention and hard to put down at times. It also shows what happens when your obsession takes over your real life and the problems it could cause- to the extreme, and with ghosts.

#2 issue- The female MC was a bit of a spoiled princess brat.
#3 silly story
Not cozy, not scary, not fun, and not interesting.

Equal parts creepy and amusing, Haunting Obsession is actually the second Rebecca Burton novella from R.J. Sullivan, although you don't need to read the first (Backstage Pass) to enjoy this.

Daryl Beasley is a man fortunate enough to find his heart's desire twice in one day, but foolish enough to risk them both. While out shopping for his girlfriend's birthday present, he spots a framed photo of Maxine Marie (a Marilyn Monroe clone) that comes with the first cheque she ever signed under that name. It's a pricey bit of memorabilia, and one that threatens to drive a wedge between his girlfriend and himself, but the temptation proves too much.

That night he discovers that the memorabilia comes with an added bonus - the ghost of Maxine herself. Before long, he finds all his fanboy dreams coming true, as Maxine seduces her way into his life . . . slowly draining him of that life in the process.

The culture clash between celebrity and fanboy, between 1950s innocence and 21st century excess, drives the humorous side of the tale. It's an odd couple pairing, and one that hits all the right notes in playing up the emotional, physical, temporal, and spiritual divide between them. Meanwhile, the slow descent from obsession into possession drives the chills and thrills, ultimately putting Daryl's life at risk. In the end, true love proves to be his only hope for salvation, but it doesn't come easy, or without a cost.

Thanks to RJ Sullivan for sending me Haunting Obsession! This book is full of love & understanding for the geeky collector ; admittedly I count myself in these ranks. ;))
Yes, the struggle is real when needing a present for a friend but finding that treasure we never knew existed! Thankfully I never bought a cursed item ( as far as I know) but poor Daryl really received more than he asked for with his Maxine collection! He was lucky that Loretta could see that he needed her more than he ever thought he would. Nice to read more of Ms Burton, paranormal investigator; I’ve read a short story that I need to revisit. Looking forward to reading more of Ms Burton’s adventures! :))

Maxine wants to be loved. That should not be too much to ask, loved for who she is, not because she is a Hollywood sex symbol even if that symbol is from the distance past. RJ takes readers on a wild ride through a fans obsession. Where the icon takes her biggest fan for a ride he will never forget.

Daryl, loves Maxine even if he is young enough to be a grandchild of Maxine's. However, his obsession has gone a little too far. When Daryl buys a piece of paper with Maxine's signature, he gets more than he bargained for. Daryl learns that his obsession might just want him for eternity.

I love a good phantom story. Growing up I was always reading The Bell Witch. Since I live less than an hour from the actually bell witch area it was something to scare the teens. Something, that we would laugh about together as a group, but go home alone and wonder if anything was true. The author gives readers a glimpse into what might happen if we take our obsession a little too far.

This is a standalone book with the series character Rebecca Burton. Join me in reading this great new series by RJ Sullivan. I know you are asking what is so great about this. Well, everyone loves ghost stories. We have all heard them around a campfire. We enjoy having someone try to scare us. We go to haunted houses during the fall. We all love the thrill from watching the minds put together a haunting. While we run from the guy with a chainsaw.

Yet remember the author has made this haunting easy. Reading will not have to go far to get their fix for this haunting. They can stay in the comfort of the own home while learning what not to purchase from their favorite famous icon. You never know Rebecca Burton might not be able to help remove the haunting from your life.

Become part of the Haunting. Just remember Daryl and Maxine the next time you purchase a piece of memorabilia.

Thanks for an amazing read RJ and Seventh Star Press

The title peaked my interest first, the synopsis grabbed my attention even more, but when I saw the cover it was the deal maker for me I wanted to read this book. I won't lie, I was kind of on the fence not knowing what to expect, but, I do try hard not to judge a book by it's cover haha (get it) yes I know my small attempt at book humor :)

So I sat down in my comfy purple comfy chair and started reading this 100+ page book and right away was sucked into the story. R.J. Sullivan's style of writing quite impressed me, the story flowed well and the characters were believable, and I could relate to them very well, it was a funny story sometimes, and made you absolutely cheer for Loretta while she was trying to save the one she loved from.....well not what you would expect really. Daryl has an obsession with his favorite movie star Maxine Marie, only problem is she is dead and some how returns from the dead and seems to be very pissed at him.

With Halloween coming this is a book you will not want to miss. An adult book for sure as some scene's are quite steamy, dam awesome steamy! A good love story, with some Paranormal thrown in, it was funny and I could relate to Daryl and Loretta as the book/movie loving geeks which is totally me. Loretta's dedication and love for Daryl and willness to stand and fight for her man was very nice to see, I know most women would have high tailed it outta there if they saw a ghost trying to choke the life out of them to take their man away for themsleves lol. I very much enjoyed this book and I know you will as well it was an easy fun read, thank you R.J. Sullivan for having me a part of your book tour. Enjoy everyone!!

We all know society is still enamored with Marilyn Monroe, even though it's been so many years since her untimely death. I know a lot of girls who still idolize her, and geez how many tattoos people have of her that I have seen. I myself am not nearly as untraced with her as a lot of people, but I can respect who she was to history. So I was a bit intrigued in this story, wanting to see if it was going to be enjoyable or just too cheesy/someone cashing in on the Marilyn craze.

Turns out it was actually pretty good. Loretta reminds me of one of those women who puts up with her boyfriend gaming all the time, but then her patience starts to run out. The thing I liked about Loretta though is she isn't a push over, and she isn't afraid to say when she thinks things have gone to far. She doesn't make excuses for anyone.

Since this is well a shorter book, I don't want to tell you too much about it because its so easy to give away to much information about novellas and take all the fun out of reading them. But the pace was pretty good, the writing solid, and a nice quick read. It was fun to read, I liked the characters, and the paranormal/society elements were good. There are definitely some adult topics in here so I wouldn't recommend for younger readers. But I do think just about anyone can find something they enjoy in this short read. So give it a try.

What if ideas and dreams and obsessions had paranormal power? What if the depth of someone's feeling might determine the strength of a ghost's ability to interact with the world? And what if someone were truly obsessed--how soon might they become possessed?

R. J. Sullivan's Haunting Obsession is a truly haunting tale with a ghostly terror reminiscent of Marilyn Munroe--who else would command such obsessive love? She wants to be loved. She only wants to be loved. But, after so long dead, she wants it rather overwhelmingly.

A ghost story for nerds and all their friends, this novella's filled with vibrant modern life, from computers to Star Trek to cell-phones and shared apartments. Poor Marilyn's thrust into the inexplicable. Lucky Daryl's the recipient of the unobtainable, and nerdgirl Loretta's trying to work whether or not she wants her boyfriend back.

Bringing 50s and 60s characters to life as convincingly as those of the present day, the author adds such well-drawn paranormality you'll almost want to check on the internet to see what your state has to offer. A thoroughly enjoyable short read, nicely plotted and planned, and convincingly intriguing, I really enjoyed this one. If I had it in paperback it would go on my shelf next to Peter Joseph Swanson's much-loved Hollywood Sinners.

This was quite an amusing story of a celebrity obsession going way too far.

The main character, Daryl Beasley is huge fan of classic movie starlet Maxine Marie. So much so that instead of buying his current girlfiend Loretta a birthday present he buys yet another piece of Maxine Marie memorabilia

Daryl soon finds out that this new object is actually haunted by Maxine's ghost and at first he thinks he's hit the lottery. The girl of his dreams who's been his obsession for years has just become real!

As things progress, Daryl soon discovers that dreams can turn into nightmares when Maxine's obsession with him turns deadly.

The character of Maxine Marie is clearly based on Marilyn Munroe and this story is something that is scary enough but almost realistic enough to happen if you believe that spirits can become trapped within certain objects.

It's a very fast paced and easy read that keeps you interested from beginning to end. A definite must read for fans of supernatural fiction.

The story was just too absurd and there was barely even a plot to the whole thing. The erotica in the book was overwhelming. I don’t mind some nice sex scenes but at least try and make them good.

Note: I won this book from Bootheel Cotton Patch.
