Legend says it separates the human world from one full of monsters and magic, and every year on the holiday of Samhain, it lifts. That night, anyone… or anything… can pass between the two. But it's only a legend, of course.
Or so Lina Calder thought.
Then her brother is stolen away in the night, claimed as a Changeling, and legend becomes horrifying reality as Lina’s search thrusts her into a treacherous new realm. There she is forced to ally with a powerful Fae king, but despite his favor, Lina's presence still makes waves. Dark creatures clamor for her blood, a war between good and evil inches closer by the day, and her brother's whereabouts remain a mystery. As Lina attempts to find her place in a world hellbent on seeing her dead, her journey leads her to the farthest reaches of the realm, testing her courage, her heart, and her will to survive along the way.
Fans of Sarah J. Maas and Holly Black will enjoy this action-packed debut from Ivy Brannon, the first in a thrilling new series filled with adventure, steamy romance, and a sprinkle of Irish folklore.
*Content this book contains scenes of an adult nature, including explicit language, sexual content, violence, and attempted assault. It is not intended for anyone under 18 years of age. This is book one in a series and ends on a slight cliffhanger.
This was imaginative, fast paced, and fun debut book by Ivy Brannon, It had many familiar tones of A Court of Roses, but much more adult which I really preferred.
It follows the story of a human named Lina that after an attack on a camping trip where her younger brother goes missing and her two older brothers are brutally murdered. Lina finds herself trapped in a world that was told as a fairy tale with a broody man Soren and his bestfriend Xavier, after they save Lina from the attack. Have her under their protection.
She is a human now stuck in a Fae world that Nethers has kidnapped her little brother. A world on brink of war with the Nethers and eachother.
Soren and Xavier reminded me so much of Tamlin and Lucian from ACOTAR so I had many conflicting feelings regarding Soren. Although he seems ok and is a bit more likeable.
I do really enjoy Lina's character but she definitely makes abrupt decisions without any thought of anyone else or what could happen to them in their world. My favorite character for sure is Hale. I really enjoy his character and real struggles with racism/bias from his community.
The world is pretty rich in first book and I hope it goes into even more in-depth in the second book for world building,
The writing style of this book is great. The majority of the book is told from Lina's prospective but then there are key moments that we get Soren and Hale's point of view. It was perfection. We even get a flash back chapter that helps explains some of the political relationships.
I really appreciated so much that this was an adult fantasy versus young or new adult,
Overall this is a really fun book and I'm really hoping that Ivy Brannon continues writing as this was a great debut and showed a ton of talent and prospect. Well done.
I would recommend this book to fans of Sarah J Maas, Holly Black, and Leigh Bardugo.
Thank you to Net Galley and Ivy Brannon for this advanced reader copy. My review is voluntarily my own.
I will be posting my review to my Instagram page The.Floofs.Booknook and retail sites closer to or on publication.
I've been reading fantasy since I was a child, and with age my tastes have shifted and grown, much like I have, but my genre of choice has always stayed the same. Never would I imagine, in all my years of reading, that one day a book I agreed to be an Alpha reader for, in its rawest form, would become my favorite. Every installment grew and molded to such a specific voice that I began to feel as if I was missing distant friends and wanted desperately to check up on them and learn what was going on in their lives. Ivy Brannon has created a world so vivid and rich with magic, war, and love that I at times would even forget my own world entirely. Ivy's debut novel has surpassed all my fantasy experiences with The Veil Series, and I can't wait for her readers to rise up and find their place in this realm she so loving created for us. Welcome home! And to those avid rereads, welcome back.
I received this book free in return for my honest review. Thank you to the author and publisher for allowing me to review this book.
I have mixed feelings about this book. Lina is a peasant woman who crosses the veil between worlds trying to save her baby brother. Upon stumbling across the veil, she is rescued by Soren and winds up starting a war between the Fae and the Nethers. I found the pacing to be inconsistent. We're immediately thrown into chaos in the first few pages and then the narrative slows so we can see a build-up of a romance. Fine, I guess. Then it continues this speed and slow pacing for the rest of the book. Lina as a character is okay. My problem is that she's either sobbing, fighting, or involved in a romance throughout the book. Wynn begins to feel less like a character and more like a prop. by the end, it feels that's exactly what he is. Wynn is not a person anymore, he is simply the prop used to keep the story going. There are at least 3 enemies to lovers storylines going on in this book as well, which removes any of the tension that might build from that trope. Lina seemed to be a character that was unsure of what she wanted or how to get it. She's seen as strong because she can fight, and that's great, but I didn't see her as a strong character at all. She was indecisive and petulant. Her choices were impulsive and frustrating at times. I did like that the author created an atmosphere where the reader wasn't sure who to trust throughout the book. That was a good touch. Overall, however, I don't know if I would continue the series. I am not invested enough in the characters or the story to continue. I'm not a huge fan of fantasy so that may play a part in my review, but I also just felt like this book relied too much on romance tropes and not enough on fleshing out world building and character development.
I received an ARC from Net Galley in exchange for a review. This was such a fun fast paced plot driven novel. I definitely felt the Court of Thorns and Roses vibes and appreciated the reality brought to some of the heavier topics. However, I specifically picked this up because it was labeled LGBT+ and while there are mentions of side characters and people in the shadows there are no main characters who would fit into this category. Overall, I could not put this down and really enjoyed the reading experience.
The Veil is a difficult book to describe. The storyline is different and the side characters and world interesting. The writing style is also enjoyable.
The main character, Lina, is clearly traumatized and clinically depressed, which makes it difficult to like her. While it is a very good characterization of a character with rage depression, Lina is self-centered and surprisingly uninterested in the new world she's thrust into. While her primary motivation is to get her brother back, she's more reactive than proactive and she spends most of her time distracted by male fae. She seems strangely fine with having caused a war.
I spent most of the book wanting the villains to win. They had clear objectives, Lina had been in the wrong according to law and treaty, and they never wavered from their goals. Lina, meanwhile, was constantly toggling between crying and engaging in lust-fueled relationships without true emotional connection.
While there is some character growth for Lina through the book, her depression is never completely addressed and she never completely takes full responsibility for herself. As a result, the book isn't quite a journey to healing or maturity and falls a bit short of satisfaction emotionally.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I had a really hard time putting this book down. Linas journey beyond the veil is full of death, love, friendships, enemies, and so many other twist and turns. As a character, she has a lot of growth and her relationships become dynamic as new revelations occurs. Great world building (not too much, not too little), found family, and so much depth. I can’t wait to read the next part of the journey.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I’m so torn about this book. There are parts of it I loved. It reminded me of ACOTAR, From Blood and Ash and The Plated Prisoner all in one. Lina was a fantastic character and the world building was really strong. The side characters were well developed and I loved how the author dealt with some series issues within the story. The struggles I had were that the main love interests reminded me strongly of characters from other series. At the same time the similarities to other series would, at points, pull me out of the story. I still ultimately liked how the relationships were built and the ending left me wanting to know more.
This is the first book in the series and despite any issues I had with it I will definitely be reading the next book because I need to know what happens!

4.5/5 ⭐️
The veil by Ivy Brannon is an amazing fantasy romance full of a fast paced story with romance, action, fantasy and other wonderful qualities. This is the first book in a new fantasy series called The veil series.
Brief synopsis:
The story follows our main character Lina, a human, that after a terrible camping attack she ends up in a world that was told to her as being a fairy tail, only now is real. Under the protection of the men who saved her that night, Lina navigates this strange new world in search of her brother.
This book was an amazing read. The story was really fast paced so it was easy to read. The plot is a really good one that just turns better as you read. The world building could had been better. I do believe the reader would have really benefited from having more information about the world since it is such an amazing concept.
Personal opinion: The start of the book was really good but soon I found myself thinking if I should dnf, because I didn’t like were I was imagining the story going, I didn’t like the main character, really disliked the first love interest we are shown (still do) and I just felt like this wasn’t the story for me. The only thing that kept me going was Xavier and the fact that I received an arc copy and I wasn’t going to dnf without giving it a fair chance. So I continued and at around the 44% of the book, the story took a turn for the better. The story became really interesting and we were presented to the second love interest (who I love), also some of the new characters were amazing. My favorites being Syrena, Xavier and of course Hale, who is my favorite of them all. I started to like Lina and saw her becoming someone that I never thought she would become. This book was an amazing read, it made me tear up, scream at my pillow from anger, smile from happiness and so many more emotions. This book made me feel like the characters were real and love them so much. I am so exited to see Lina continue to grow in the next books and hopefully see the return of my favorite characters in book two.
Overall The Veil by Ivy Brannon was such a good book. To everyone who is having the same trouble as I had in the beginning, I say just give it an opportunity and continue because you might be surprised at how much you like it in the end like I was.
A huge thank you has to go to both the author & Book Sirens for giving me an e-ARC of The Veil to review! Ivy Brannon has crafted an amazing debut NA fantasy romance, & I devoured this story in just one sitting. Let me tell you all of the reasons why…
Lina Calder has escaped to the forest on a hunting party with her brothers, to get away from the horrible Lord Olin. But unbeknownst to them, the legend of the veil between the human & fae realms lifting on Samhain is true. And when her youngest brother is stolen away by monsters from across the divide, Lina will do anything to get him back. But some rules are set in stone, & have been since the dawn of time. Can one human really go up against this power, to save her brother from being a Changeling? Or will this start a war that’s been brewing for centuries? Lina needs to find her courage, because the creatures that stalk the land are coming for her…
If there’s one trope that I absolutely adore above all others, it’s ragtag team. And let me tell you, this one is definitely that! There are friends, allies & frenemies in amongst this group & it makes for a truly delicious & delightful mixture. And at the heart of it all? A young woman who just wants her brother back, no matter what it takes. Most of us can attest to how powerful family connections can be, & I’m always going to cheer for a story involving this plotline!
By the way, if this story doesn’t break you with anything else going on, it will when you meet Hale. This male knows what it’s like to be an outsider; he’s despised, feared, & hated for just *breathing*. And I swear, he’s the most noble one out of the whole lot of them. His name needs to be mentioned here. And when you read this story? You’ll know why...
The Veil is intense. The beginning is brutal, but it really sets up the story so well. Lina and her three brothers are travelling on Samhain, the only night of the year when stories say the veil between worlds can be crossed. It's just old tales of course. Until their youngest brother is attacked in the forest and Lina suddenly finds herself face to face with the stuff of nightmares. She is rescued by a handsome stranger, but not before she loses everything and finds herself in the hidden fae realm with no way to return home for a year.
Lina was a great character. She is singleminded in her goal to retrieve her brother, though her tendency to act before thinking or listening to advice gets her into trouble. I love the banter with Xavier and Meer, and her building relationships with other characters. We also see Soren's and Hale's points of view and I love getting a glimpse into their thoughts as well.
The story is well written and compelling. I had to put it down and have a denial break in a few spots though, Brannon has no compunction about ripping your heart out.
Fans of books like ACOTAR and These Hollow Vows will enjoy The Vale, and I'm so keen to read the next one!
Wow! I absolutely devoured this book and I now I have no idea what to do with myself while I wait for the sequel.
Lina is a human who gets thrust into the fae world. I loved seeing a character that isn't afraid to feel her feelings and I need sweet Lina to have everything. Additionally, serious shoutout for a FMC who has no interest in having children. As a childfree woman, I cannot tell you how rare it is for romantasy protagonists to be in search of a different sort of happily ever after and I am so here for it! Hale and Soren are both perfectly sexy and flawed in their own way and I COULD NOT STOP READING. I won't say more to avoid spoilers just simply that I love the direction that I hope the romance is going in.
Overall Rating: 5/5
Spice Level: 3/5
Sass Score: 2/5
While I typically live for the banter in books, I liked that Lina is different from the traditional "snarky badass" type that I often see and instead she feels things very deeply. She is more interested in feelings than in one-liners and it was a nice! There are still some quality quips though and I did laugh a few times.
I was shocked to see this is a debut book because the writing is on par with other indie authors I love. I absolutely cannot wait to read more of this series and see where Ivy takes this story because this was such an addicting start that had me crying more than once! I would love for the next ones to have more world building and descriptions of the magic systems being used as well as more fleshed out alternative POVs. I have confidence that Ivy Brannon will keep leading this story into amazing places and I hope this book gets the hype it deserves.
Thanks so much to Ivy Brannon and to BookSirens for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I received an arc of this book from NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved this book! I couldn't put it down the minute I started reading, I sat for hours reading this book.
The story is about a human girl named Lina Calder who goes hunting with her brothers and they find themselves in trouble on the night of Samhain when the veil between the fae and the humans is down. Her youngest brother Wynn gets taken by own of the Nethers and determined to save him Lina finds herself getting help from Soren, King of Astoria. The two slowly start to develop a relationship. But as Lina seeks to rescue her brother a war begins between the fae and the Nethers, and its partially her fault. Even though the story mostly revolves around Lina, I enjoyed reading about some of the other characters like Xavier, Syrena, and Hale. Mostly Hale.
Some things that I wish were added to the book was a little more world building in the beginning of the story about the different lands, rulers, and even some history about the fae and the Nethers. We do learn about the Nethers since they are the main enemy, but I wish there was a little more writing regarding the history of the world in general. Since there are more books coming out in this series, I'm confident that there will be more information for the readers about the world we are reading about.
I can't wait for the next book, there's still so much that I want to know about the other characters and I don't believe that Lina's story is finished.
This story gave me the same energy as The Cruel Prince but with characters that are actual adults!
It was really fun to read, fast paced with a ton of twists and turns and "oh shit" moments. I wouldn't say it is overly spicy maybe like 2/5? There are only a few actual scenes, but there's loads of tension and I thought it was really well done. The spice is not overwhelming at all and it actually works to assist the plot in the story, it isn't just there every other page just to be there (thank god because that is sort of a pet peeve of mine).
I would not say the word "cheating" to define any events of the story but there is a bit of an unbeknownst love triangle. I personally really liked it, it gave DRAMA which I live for but I know that triggers some of my beautiful lovelies out there in which case it may not be your taste<3 But I ate it up, this book actually gave me anxiety, like I had to set the kindle down and step away for a second to relax haha which is a huge compliment.
I enjoyed the characters. By characters, I mean Hale. My affinity for broken men was positively triggered.
There are some gaps in world building/ setting/ timeline that didn't work as well for me. The way the characters speak and their mannerisms were very modern in my opinion and didn't really make sense for the setting. Doesn't really take away from the enjoyment once you're into the story!
I received a free advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
While briefly skimming through other reviews, I will agree this book reminds me of ACOTAR, in some ways (I gave ACOTAR 3 stars).
The fae world is being built up nicely, and the idea of The Veil is also very intriguing.
In the first half of the book, I enjoyed the character development of both Lina and Soren, but felt the pacing of the story to be odd. There'd be a ton of action and then suddenly it would reach an almost complete stop, where Lina seemed to care about absolutely NOTHING. While understandably she's been through a lot, I grew very frustrated with her at times, because her reactions seemed utterly selfish and illogical to the point where it didn't even seem like a realistic human response.. And it only got worse in the 2nd half of the book.
I was not prepared for a sudden "love triangle", and definitely not in such a quick time span. So she didn't hear from Soren for 3 months, while he's literally out fighting a war, and just decides to go with Hale? While I loved Hale as a character and saw no fault with him, this part of the story irritated me immensely.
I will say, I enjoyed the general distrust the author created of most people in the book - although predictable at times, I felt it was delivered quite nicely. The little "twist" regarding the "bad guys" was also quite interesting, despite being predictable.
I did however not enjoy how the author made it seem like Soren repeatedly gave Lina no choices, all the way up to the ending - making it seem like Lina had to "regain control" by making her own decision. Not to mention the general lack of appreciation for everything Soren did for her. Especially when trying to clear up the big mess she created.
By the time I reached the ending, I was honestly just frustrated and pissed and don't see myself reading the next book - if there is one.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book was so good, there was so many twist that I wasn't expecting. This was a new look at fae within the nethers.
This book starts with Lina who is a human and her brothers. Lina doesn't want to get married and do what is expected of a woman. Can't read, can't do anything exceptional, only care for her husband. That isn't the life she wants for herself. When a man from her town trys to force himself upon her with marriage and himself, she has to run, asking her brothers to take her on a hunting trip. This is where it all goes wrong for Lina. They are attacked by a group of nethers who steal her littlest brother as a changeling, killing her other two brothers. This is where Lina is refused by the fae king Soren and his companion Xavier.
Lina has a lot of trials to face after this, the nethers want her dead.
I cannot wait to see what comes next for Lina and The Veil series.... The ending is just gahhh, cliff hanger and so many questions left unanswered.
This was a binge read for me, once I started I couldn't stop. The world building was rich, so much so that I found myself immersed in the world and the story.
The story is dark, with a battle of good and evil with Lina our MFC at the centre of it. I liked Linas strength and courage but at times found myself yelling at her to make a decision. Particularly that pertaining to the heart.
Segue to the love triangle. This is the part of the book that I'm conflicted about the most. I have very few triggers, ok so really I only have two, cheating and triangles. While I wish I had now that there would be a love triangle (and not in a fun why choose kind of way) I probably wouldn't have read this book. That said, I am glad I read it and would have regretted not picking this one up.
Linas two love interests are Soren and Xavier and there were so many elements I liked about each of them that I found myself torn. Soren is very much the dominant, protective fae king, while also being kind and caring. Xavier reminded me so much of Azriel from ACOTAR. He has this immense power and darkness underneath which is a vulnerability that few see.
I'll stop myself there because if I don't I'll spoil things for y'all.
I also really liked Linas character development. I like her growth and her decision to be her own person. I just wish the men in her life were more decisive and didn't leave things until the eleventh hour. I should probably also mention that this is an adult book, and there is spice 🌶🌶🌶/5.
This was a highly enjoyable read for me and I recommend it for fans of ACOTAR, Sarah A Parker, and Charissa Weaks.
Thank you Ivy for the ARC, for which I am grateful.
Yes, this gives ACOTAR vibes but in the best possible way. This is a great story of a girl stuck in a world she doesn't understand and the Fae politics she gets thrown into.
I'm not a huge fan of love triangles but I am invested here. The characters are dynamic and their secrets are intriguing. The world building has vast potential. The love interests are great (it's less Rhys/Tamlin for me and more Team Edward/Team Jacob). I'm reserving my opinions on who is the closet villain until we get more story. Everyone is sus. Nothing felt convoluted or unnecessary, everything seems to serve some sort of purpose (what that may be remains to be seen for some aspects). I really appreciate that this story feels mapped out and hasn't been written off the cuff.
As a debut fantasy romance novel, this could be a really fantastic series. There's a lot of saturation in this market but this is one of the top new authors for me. If book two can really dig into the character development and world building this will be a formidable author for the genre.
I'm waiting (impatiently) for the next installment.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review honestly and voluntarily.
⭐⭐⭐.5 TLDR: The Veil was a fun and quick read. A few plot holes and underdeveloped characters, but I still wanted to see it through and will likely read the sequel. ____________________
Overall, I really enjoyed how the story developed. There are many twists that happen in the last 25% of the book that I didn't see coming, but the "cliffhanger" at the end wasn't enough for me to feel like the story needed to keep going.
I had a hard time with the dialogue and POVs throughout the book. It felt more like a movie script than a novel, where so much is said and explained that there's not much left for the reader's imagination or interpretation.
The flow of the book is interrupted by a paragraph or two of Soren or Hale's 3rd person POV in the middle of a chapter after reading over half the book from Lina's 1st person perspective. I would have enjoyed the characters having their own dedicated chapters from the beginning, to learn more about their backstory and internal thoughts.
Then there's the random prophecy thrown in that we never hear about again. Does it allude to the series as a whole? Why is it never referenced again?
I'll read the sequel to see if a certain character is included and if some questions are answered. Fingers crossed!
It's hard to gather my thoughts, because I read this in one sitting, despite all my good intentions to actually sleep before work! I may be a little tired! This was fast-paced, and did not let go of my emotions, even at the very end. Secondly, I have some new favourite book characters (Xavier became a favourite 𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 early on), and even a new book boyfriend. 🖤🔥
This debut is high fantasy with Fae royalty, dark creatures, political intrigue, fighting, found family, stabby FMC, touch her and I'll unalive you, and some tension before the spice.
Swipe for blurb.
This book is an emotional rollercoaster. I enjoy the FMC, Lina, and love how unapologetic she is. Fae King of Astoria, Soren, and Lina's love interest, is brooding, dark, powerful and morally grey - what's not to love? It wasn't him who took my heart though...
A 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 read for me.
Ivy Brannon, I loved this! I will be keeping a close eye out for the sequel ARC, because I 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑 to know more! Also, if I fall asleep at work, it's your fault! 😂

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley in return for a review. Thank you!
To compare this book to any other storyline would not serve the accuracy and justice that this book deserves . I 100% have to say that this has to be one of my favorite novels since ‘ What Hunts Inside The Shadows’ by Harper L Woods and Crescent City by Sarah J Maas. The way that Ivy continuously keeps the reader on edge is amazing and the chemistry was so spectacularly written that I was questioning my own morals and judgments….which I honestly have to say I haven’t done in quite a while. On top of that this book had me so shook that I had this at the book down more than a couple times just because I couldn’t believe what was going on ! This is my first ever novel that I’ve read by Ivy Brannon and I say this now this will not be my last. If you’re looking for a story that not only is going to keep you on edge, but is also going to be filled with passion and an amazing story line with a dash of fantasy then this is definitely the book that you should pick up I promise you won’t regret it! Star : 5/⭐️ Steamy: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Plot : 5/⭐️
Disclaimer : I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
If ACOTAR, From Blood & Ash, and Gleam had a baby.. it would be this book. I was reminded of all three as I was reading.
It’s about a girl who goes out on Samhain with her brothers. The veil is thin this night, and they end up getting attacked. Her youngest brother gets stolen away, and in trying to get him back she ends up washed up on a river bed clinging to life. A couple of handsome fae find her.. and the story ensues.
I think for this author’s debut novel, she has really done something here. She describes the different fae courts with beautiful detail.
THERE’S SPICINESS. 🌶️ 🔥
The leading lady KNOWS what she wants, in ALL ways. She comes off as brash at several points, and I’m not going to lie a little self centered.
This book isn’t perfect, it needs some work. There are pacing issues, and the plot jumps from one point to the next without much of an explanation.
Overall, I finished this book to the last word, and it kept me entertained. I’m hoping the next book is even better!
Great world building, lots of romance with some spice, and high stakes made this an intense read. For as many plot twist I could guess, another snuck up on me. And I certainly did not predict the end, but I was happy with it! I expect a lot from Lina (MC) in the future, and hope we get to see some of my favorite characters return soon.
Admittedly, there were some developmental issues, which pulled me from the story and made it difficult to be fully invested, and therefore connected, to the characters. That said, it was stronger than some NY Times Bestselling author’s debuts, and I was plenty surprised. I cannot wait for the next book, and will be monitoring this author closely for updates.
If you enjoyed TOG and A Curse So Dark and Lonely, this is your book.

🤯🤯 By far one of the best books I’ve read in a while. I’m all for women being strong and capable but it feels like almost every book that’s been released recently is “oh I did know I was born a badass” or reverse harem. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE reverse harems but I want depth in the book.
The veil brings you into an new world. I was so pleasantly shocked with in the first chapter I had to read it out loud to my husband. His response was “Oh damn!” I had to force my self to take my time because I didn’t want it to end.
Definitely worth the read! It is not a fast burning steamy romance book. Yes it does have some 🥵 scenes but I think it’s better without. This way you get to truly learn the characters and the story.

This was a great read for fans of ACOTAR or even A Kingdom of Stars and Shadows. Hopefully the published edition will include designations for when the POV changes, as that was a bit confusing at times.
Lina is escaping a bad situation with her three brothers when they are attacked and two of her brothers are killed. What comes to Lina’s rescue is worse though: a monster creature that she evades enough to get away and is found by some fae (she doesn’t know they’re fae). Her youngest brother has been captured by the nethers and Alina is trying everything she can to save him. Think also comedic side characters, found family, a love triangle, and while Alina cries all the time, she works at becoming stronger and learning to protect herself. I will watch out for the next book as I’m really mad about something that happened and want to have a change.

This was a valiant effort at a first book. It's marketed as fantasy romance, but understand this is SLOW burn - as in 50% before any smut. It takes a backseat to the fantasy plot, which I'm okay with. The world building is fairly solid and I appreciated the magic system not being overly complex. The sex scenes are a little clunky and come from out of nowhere, but I'll chalk that up to first time writer issues. I needed the pace to slow down to flesh out the characters more because they felt flat at times. Also, there were several confusing changes in POV- both between chapters and in chapters. I think a solid developmental edit would fix many of these problems. All that said, I loved the surprise villain at the end… and that cliffhanger ending! I enjoyed this book & look forward to the sequel.
This is the first book in the series and I am already looking forward to the next installment. This story was so well-written with amazing characters and SO MUCH ACTION. I am just in awe.
Lina and her brothers are camping on Samhain when they are taken by surprise, first by a group of men and then by creatures. Lina awakens after being rescued from a river and healed from a bite. She is surprised to find herself in a castle full of fae...and is told she has crossed the veil into their world. The veil is only open on Samhain and she must return to her home before dawn. She can't leave without her youngest brother, but she has no idea where to find him. Scouts from the castle discover he has been switched as a Changeling. She desperately attempts to rescue him, but her rash actions have created a conflict that will change her life forever...
So much fitted into one book and only the start, cannot wait for more Lina adventures. A true rollercoaster not only with your emotions but the storyline and lots of surprises, twists and turns and truly imperfect human qualities in supernatural world that make them vulnerable and great character ensemble on all sides of the veils. The book has it all, traumas, heartache, love, humour, emotional dramas, mystery, intrigue and adventure. When first meet Lina at the beginning in human world she’s already an intriguing and strong character, but what happens from then on in the book and her dramas create this beautiful woman who survives and thrives in many situations and yet keeps her heart, kindness and inner strength all the way to unexpected end. If you love the folklore of Fae, read this book. If you are a believer, or are even just intrigued about the idea of, the boundary between our world and their world being at its thinnest during Samhain, read this book. If you love spicy scenes, bantering characters, rich world building and complicated relationships, read this book.
