Luca Romero’s dream has finally come true. Writing is going to get her out of the slums and into the life she’s worked so hard for. But when she trusts the wrong person with her golden ambitions, her world takes a dark, deadly turn. Waking to find herself imprisoned on a marijuana farm while another woman takes her place in the limelight, Luca doesn’t know where to turn.
Marissa Vargas has secrets. As daughter of a drug cartel boss in Mexico, she knows what will happen to her if those secrets come out before she can escape to a better life. But when sweet Luca shows up on her father’s compound, Marissa’s plans take an unexpected turn. Can she leave to live her own life, knowing she’s left Luca behind to face a world of destruction and despair?
When hearts get involved in a world of double-dealings and deception, only the strongest find a way out.
Robyn Nyx is an avid shutterbug and lover of all things fast and physical. Her writing often reflects both of those passions. She lives with her soul mate and fellow scribe. They have no kids or kittens, which allows them to travel to exotic places at the drop of a hat for “research.” She works hard to find writing time, when she’s not being distracted by blue skies and motorbike rides.
Marissa Vargas is the only daughter of the leader of a Mexican drug cartel. After her mother died, her father became more and more ruthless, while also demanding she take over the family business. She dreamed of escaping his grasp and influence, and finally settled on a plan to escape with her life long friend, Arturo, her father’s right hand man. She was counting down the days until their plan came to fruition when she walked in on her father’s latest wicked scheme, this time involving an innocent woman who didn’t deserve to be taken prisoner. Could she still run away, knowing her father would kill this woman once she was no longer useful? Or could she find a way save her, and her soul in the process?
Luca Romero came from the streets of Mexico. Yet she maintained her hopeful outlook. Instead of falling into a life of crime, she decided to pursue her dreams of becoming a writer and submitted a series to an agent in Los Angeles to finally leave this world behind. She befriended, lived, and trusted Casey Soto, a ruthless con artist who would do anything to get ahead, even stealing the life of her only friend. When Luca’s novels were picked up by an agent with promises of world wide release, Casey devised a plan to take Luca’s life, forcing her into indentured servitude on the powerful Vargas compound. Was Casey’s plan as flawless as she believed? Or would Luca find the inner strength she never knew she had to survive long enough to reclaim her stolen life, finding love in the process?
Stolen Ambition is such a different story than I’ve read of Robyn’s. It was action packed like most of her prior work, but the storyline behind the love story was quite unique and really worked. If her goal was to make the reader despise, almost hate, two of the characters, she really succeeded. The villains were so terrible, it was almost comical how delusional they were when they thought they were untouchable. The growth of Marissa and Luca kept me glued to the story. It was a true rich girl/poor girl dichotomy, yet it was written in such a way that it wasn’t an overbearing part of the journey. It was simply a circumstance of their lives, but not the true defining nature of their existence. “Weeds are simply flowers in the wrong place,” was a line that perfectly summed up their relationship. In a story full of despair, heartache, and evil, the possibility of a better life for Casey and Mr. Vargas’ victims drove the story to it’s ultimate ending, which was quite satisfying.
If you are looking for a unique WLW action romance, this is the one for you. Another home run by Robyn Nix. 5 stars.
I was given an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Luca’s dream is to be a published author and get out of the tough hand life has dealt her. When an opportunity presents itself, Luca can’t believe her luck but she turns to her friend for some help. Marissa’s desperately trying to escape her dangerous family but when she crosses paths with Luca, everything changes.
I couldn’t believe how amazing this story was. It does deal with some dark themes and situations but you know somewhere in the world this is someone’s life. Everything Luca and Marissa went through was traumatic, life changing, and a complete shock. How another person could treat another the way they were was shocking, and it really summed up that it doesn’t matter who you are, if you end up in the wrong the situation you are never protected, no matter how you’re connected.
On the edge of my seat I fed off of Luca’s hope that there would be a way out of this. Even when faced with the toughest of tasks or most dire of circumstances she tried to have hope and support and love others. She was so giving and kind, which was both a strength and a weakness. All round she was just a good person who didn’t deserve any of what happened to her. Marissa was such a strong woman, and together they were perfect for one another. I admired them greatly and just had to hope that life was going to deal them some good luck at the right moment.
I really enjoyed this. It was certainly an eye-opening and thought provoking adventure that really tugged at the heartstrings and restored belief that anything is possible but not always as easy as it seems.
Luca is a writer. Marissa is the daughter of the head of a drug cartel. Luca receives great news, a literary agent wants to represent her. Her mistake is telling her conniving roommate Casey, who works for Vargas, the head of the drug cartel. This is a dark look into the lives and deaths of those involved. But, it's so interesting and well, it's not so dark at the end. The journey you go through is rough but interesting. 5 stars!
This was a great read. Robyn Nyx had me enthralled from the beginning. I enjoyed the fact that not only do we get points of view from the two MCs, but we also get into the head of the protagonist as well. Stolen Ambition had me enthralled from the beginning, and I just got more captivated as it went on. I look forward to more books by Robyn Nyx in the future.
A very thrilling read. This could be a ripped from the headlines book. Luca is an unassuming butch. But she has very big dreams of being a writer. For work, she is a bartender. All of her free time is spent on researching and writing. Her best friend and roommate is Casey. They also work together. Casey runs drugs for the area drug lord. I loved the amount of detail Robyn put into the book. I was able to invision the settings in Mexico. And across the border in California. I really enjoy this type of book. Theft, deception, violence, drugs, and some believable romance. I enjoyed the secondary characters and how well they were fleshed out. I hope Robyn will continue to write in this genre. Highly recommend.
Stolen Ambition by Robyn Nyx is centred around Luca Romero, a struggling author, who shares accommodation with her friend Casey Soto. Both Luca and Casey hold down jobs in a bar, whilst Casey also deals in drugs on the side. Marissa Vargas, daughter of a drug cartel boss, occasionally frequents the bar and has her own reasons for a bit of escapism away from a life she does not want.
From the outset, this book blew me away with the action, adventure, moral dilemmas, questionable trust, and romance. Robyn certainly packs a lot in that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I did not expect some of the plot twists that just kept me guessing and was completely immersed in Luca’s world including the challenges she faced. This was one book I could not put down.
I received an ARC copy of this book for my honest review.
Loved this story! I have to admit to not expecting this book to be high on my list of favorites, since I am generally averse to seeing good people get the proverbial shaft. But, I trusted the author to bring it to a good end and wasn't disappointed at all. The main characters are well developed and likeable. The secondary characters are almost equally well developed, but not all are so likeable!! ;) I don't believe in giving spoilers, but suffice it to say, the MCs and secondary characters each get an appropriate ending. Content warning for implied and vague reference to violence, but it is appropriate to the story and not in depth. My only criticism is that the end is somewhat abrupt, meaning that I would have liked to see more detailed follow up for some of the secondary characters and their outcomes. Highly recommend for a great read!
The best stories are written by authors who excel at what they do, and oh boy, Nyx has certainly found her groove in the romantic suspense genre.
Amongst the drug fields of a sadistic Mexican cartel boss, Luca Romero finds herself fighting for her life, her dreams, and the love of her life.
A promising writer, Luca is ecstatic when her manuscript makes it further than the incoming post room of a literary agent; finally her dreams look set to come true after years of scrapping by.
Casey Soto works for Señor Vargas, hustling his drugs on the side and carrying out whatever is asked of her. But she's always had lofty ambitions and when Luca gets the offer of a lifetime, Casey knows this is her chance to escape to LA; just like she'd always dreamed about. With a golden opportunity literally walking around the basement apartment they share, Casey makes a snap decision to impersonate Luca. Casey knows she can rely on her charm to fake it till she makes it, after all how hard can it be - it's only a jumble of words on a page, right?
As the daughter of a drug cartel boss, Marissa Vargas knows she has to keep her cards close to her chest, not only about who she is, but what she plans to do to escape the clutches of her erratic and immoral father. What Marissa didn't bank on was finding sweet, bewildered Luca, imprisoned on her father's compound. Torn between helping Luca escape to claim her rightful place in LA, or taking the only opportunity she has to get away from a life she never wanted, Marissa faces a situation she never accounted for.
As tensions rise and pulses race, Luca and Marissa must decide between their individual freedoms or their flourishing love. Each has the potential to reach a deadly conclusion.
I delight in Nyx's strength to write characters which you love and love to hate; Stolen Ambition provides plenty of both. I find stories are infinitely better when an author can write both the protagonists and the antagonists with equal depth and quality; Nyx knows how to deliver this and it shows in every word on the page.
From sweet, adorable Luca moments, to 'Can I poke Casey's eyes out with a hot poker' vibes, Nyx has written a cracking set of characters to meet any and all expectations.
And the icing on the cake is the similarly strong and compelling side characters which Nyx filters into the overall plot. From mother figure Epi who helps to guide Luca on her first few days at the compound. To Arturo - the long time childhood companion and gay best friend of Marissa, who's slowly loosing his soul, committing unspeakable acts working for Señor Vargas. Each and every one of them fit together like a well oiled machine and at times their individual stories can be just as engrossing as that of the main characters.
Two others things that I enjoyed about Stolen Ambition; firstly, that the reader gets to hear from three points of view (Casey, Luca and Marissa), which kept the story moving along at an enjoyable pace.
And secondly that, yes, Luca is a soon to be debut author, however, rather than leave it at that Nyx uses Luca's career path to flesh out the finer details of the plot. I found it riveting to see through Luca's eyes the process of getting from A to B and beyond in the literary world.
Steadfast readers of Nyx's work and that of her wife's (Brey Willows) will spot plenty of Easter Eggs, something which when done well (as with Stolen Ambition) creates an awesome synergy across their back catalogues. Plus it's fun and quirky!
I could go on, but in reality all you honestly need to know is that Stolen Ambition is a fantastic and perfectly balanced romantic suspense novel. At its core is a story of deception and deceit, stolen dreams, risky and risqué decisions and discoverinv love in even the most dire circumstances.
Wow another sizzling storyline I loved the main characters even in a desperate situations their chemistry, connection and their journey through all the heartache twisted fate it was a beautiful heartfelt storyline with so much depth making sure you know what their feeling in moments of desperation to feeling seen and loved in the only way these two incredible characters showed page after page a must read congratulations
‘Why would anyone steal a book?’ was my first reaction when I read the synopsis of the book, this question was answered quite swiftly when I started reading!
The story is about Luca Romero who is writer, yet to be published, and Marissa Vargas, who is a drug lord’s daughter. Both women want to change their lives from their current situation. Their paths become intertwined when Luca receives an offer for publication of her book. Luca’s best friend Casey Soto also wants to change her life and Luca’s offer seems to be the ideal opportunity. All three women have their own reasons for wanting to escape their current situation and their story is woven nicely together.
This is primarily a love story, the attraction between Luca and Marissa jumps off the page for me. Behind the love story is a good mix of excitement to keep you reading and has a satisfying endgame. The story mainly takes place on the drug lord’s property, Marissa’s father. There are some tough, intense scenes in this book where people are injured or worse. However, they don’t detract from the story and without them, I would consider this an unrealistic storyline, given the setting and the characters surrounding them.
Luca and Marissa story is an engaging and enjoyable read. I read this in three sessions so it kept me turning those pages to see what would happen next. Also, I was not inclined to do my usual read through of the epilogue about halfway through the novel. Though, I was tempted at one point…..so I guess there must been a flat spot for me somewhere, but I don’t remember it. So pfffft to that! A big thumbs up from me and I would recommend you pick this up.
Robyn Nyx has done it again. Suspense galore and lots of open mouth gaping in shock and surprise!
Marissa is the daughter of a drug cartel boss who wishes to escape her life. Luca is an aspiring writer (I really want to read the books she wrote!), who has the dubious honour of being a friend of Casey Soto. When Casey betrays Luca and she ends up imprisoned on Marissa’s father’s property, Marissa wonders how she can leave Luca behind.
During this book, I was genuinely so surprised at a lot of what was happening and it just made me want to read it even more. When I realised what the title meant, ooooh, my heart started racing with what was to come. Robyn manages to weave so many intricacies into her books without pulling focus from the story itself.
In this story, we see poor, trusting Luca really come into herself and develop a backbone. We also realise the strength that Marissa has after all she has been through. These characters will have you cheering them on and hoping for the best for them, right to the very end. Also, Arturo is such a sweetheart!
It’s always a pleasure to read one of Robyn Nyx’s books, she always manages to keep my chest pounding, my brain thinking, and my heart swooning. I can’t wait for the next Robyn Nyx book.
This book will stick with you for sure - a definite 5 star read!
Stolen Ambition by Robyn Nyx reflects the anger of theft, grief at the loss of ones artistic work, despair of recovery, desperation of people held down by merciless power. I wanted to put out my own hit order on Casey! You can't put the book down once started!
This book is excellent, but I must admit it was a challenging read for me. I struggled a bit, but only because it evoked so many strong emotions, and still, or maybe because of that, I couldn’t stop reading. I experienced every feeling reading this story. That only is a testament to how well-written it is. Robyn did a great job describing the places, actions, and what the characters were living; we could feel and see everything the characters did.
The story got me on edge the whole time. There were a lot of unexpected twists and turns that kept me turning the pages.
This story was quite the ride. It is very well-written, and the ending is highly satisfying.
Stolen Ambition was my 1st Robyn Nyx book and it definitely will not be my last. This book kept me wanting to read more. This book will definitely have you yelling, crying, and so much more.
So glad I took the time out to read this and so should you. You definitely won't be disappointed. I will definitely be reading more of her work.
Robin Nyx has written a really powerful book that deals with fear and how it affects a community. As I was reading at the beginning, I sat paralysed by the thought that just as Luca was getting fame and fortune, someone was going to take it all. My heart started beating so loudly that I couldn’t breathe. Why was I so nervous? I knew it was coming and expected it to happen. That didn’t make that delightful sense of fear disappear. This feeling came and went throughout the book as I learned about the lives of the main characters and the strength needed to overcome fear and become the person you want to be. I was there, in person dealing with it all.
The story took me out of myself and left me thinking about the relationship between fear, childhood memories and what price you are prepared to pay for happiness. Everyone has something they are frightened of at some point in their lives however powerful they are. It isn’t horrific, although some of the things that happen are. Everything that happens takes place off screen and thus despite being violent at times there’s a muted softness to it.
There is romance, and love and neither are out of place in a world that is difficult to comprehend.
I am so pleased that Robyn has again written about something a little different and given us a story she should be proud of.
I bought this as a bonus purchase at my 1st queer the shelves event and Inhave to saybit was a great discision on my part lol. Really enjoyed it. This had organised crime notes with such an unusual take that i've not come across before, big thumbs up for that. I really liked how Luca tries so hard not to let her past, where she comes from or what happens to her turn her into a bad person. Marissa too is such a good soul despite the violence she's lived with her whole life. It would be so easy to become people like Casey of Marissa's father but they choose not to. Speaking of Casey and Vargas. Just like throughout the story the sets of characters can be devided into light and dark and these 2 where vile human beings and im sorry but karma can be a cruel mistress and they probably got what they deserved. Its testament to the writer when you have such reaction to characters. Your meant to feel certain ways about the i think and its a job well done. I also really liked the whole mexican side to the story. I love diversity in les fic however it comes. Other cultures, languages etc fascinate me. Throw in a few terms of enderment in another sexy language and i'm putty in the hand. All in all im a fan of ALL this authors writing, across the board and look for ward to whatever journey taken next.
Luca Romero’s dream as a newly published author is snatched away by Casey Soto, who had professed to be Luca’s best friend. Con artist Casey isn’t satisfied with stealing Luca’s identity. She cuts a deal to enslave Luca to a greedy drug cartel lord. The only saving grace is the drug lord’s daughter, Marissa Vargas.
Marissa wants nothing to do with her father’s illegal business but must walk a careful line. She helps the indentured workers on her father’s land while plotting to escape her father’s grip. As her father grows more unstable, Marissa’s risky plans magnify when Luca shows up at the compound. Will they make it out together and unscathed?
The romance is woven delicately into the Mexican drug trade. There were a few graphic scenes, but they were not overly gruesome. The author did a great job balancing tender moments between the main characters and the ugly world of drugs. The secondary characters also added depth to the story. Marissa’s childhood friend, Arturo, was my favorite. And the story’s archvillain, Casey, is the character you love to hate.
The pace of the developing romance and the unfolding drama kept me reading. I’d recommend this book.
An exciting thriller set in the world of Mexican drugs cartels. Stolen Ambition is a fast paced adventure where the stakes for the protagonists couldn’t be higher.
Trying to make ends meet as a bartender, Luca dreams of being a published author. She’s finished her manuscript and just needs to get it out there. When she trusts the wrong person she loses her future and her freedom.
Marissa is the daughter of a drugs baron who has become increasingly evil since the death of her mother. She’s trying to keep her head above water and survive long enough to plan her escape with her best friend. When she learns of Luca’s fate can she find a way to save her without losing her own chance to live?
As always with a book by Robyn Nyx I was gripped throughout, charmed by the characters and torn between desperation to see the resolution and a desire to stay in their story. Nyx has the ability to keep the romantic element strong in the violent worlds she often places her characters. The violence was realistic without being too graphic. Looking forward to the next Robyn Nyx book!
This book is one that I will reread for sure. Robyn is so good at writing suspenseful thrillers and her characters are never dull or lacking personality. The flow will keep you reading and you will find it hard to put this one down. I read late into the night and finished around 2 a.m., but it was worth it. I’m off now to find another of her books, hopefully I won’t be kept up as late with her next one, since I will definitely start it in the morning! Enjoy reading Stolen Ambition, I sure did!
well i said i was going to start reading more mafia-esque books and once again i really enjoyed this book.
this one wasn’t as nitty and gritty as i was expecting after reading the blurb but i think that worked well in this case and there wasn’t any unnecessary violence.
i do think the ending was a bit rushed, as at one point i thought there was going to end up being a second book as we were no where close to conflict resolution but we were 88% of the way through the book.
but other than that this book was a fantastic read and i thoroughly enjoyed it.
With Stolen Ambition, Robyn Nyx has given us another fast-paced and exciting romantic thriller. Her tenderhearted and brave main character battles through betrayal, kidnap, and extreme danger to achieve her goal and rescue her loved one. The fact that she's a young author hoping for a book deal makes the story all the more engaging. Start this book, and you won't want to put it down until you finish, so give yourself time to enjoy it. It's a real page-turner.
The strength and courage it takes to take your life back, i’d not small task. You must believe your worth to trudge through every obstacle and in the way give the same courage to others to overcome to find your HEA.
Wow! Now this is one of the best drug lord, cartel books I've ever read. It's full of action, betrayal, suspense and even a few body parts! The love story is beautiful and realistic. Really worth 5 stars.
All I can say about this book, is WOW! Robyn Nyx has written another gripping book and a suspenseful page turner! There are five main characters in this book, Marissa, Senor Vargas, her father, Arturo, Luca, and Casey. Marissa and Arturo have a special bond that they’ve had since they were children. The story takes you through four of the character’s lives, complete with their backgrounds, to include their happiness, sadness, fears and dreams. If I say anymore, I will rob you of experiencing the gripping plot that leads to an ending you never expected. You will not regret picking this book up and I guarantee you will be turning pages well into the night!
