In the depths of a newborn universe, a cultivator takes advantage of the abundant energy to refine himself a treasure. But after 14 billion years of refining and quite a few more to go, he decides to entertain himself by releasing countless systems and watching how the creatures of this fledgling universe handle them.
On Earth, a young man, lost and confused about what to do with his life, sits in a park and looks up at the night sky. A shooting star, a wish and a bang. When the boy finally wakes up he hears a sound, "assimilation complete. Launching System. Welcome to the Midnight Inn. Host The Innkeeper."
To this day I am marvelling at genius of lifeskecther and his ability to project it on his novel. It has a great mix of fantasy and comedy that awakens an inexplicable hunger for more with every chapter you read. In “The Innkeeper” you will follow the never-ending adventures of Lex and see him using every opportunity he gets to become stronger and find a place for himself in the infinitely big universe. If that wasn’t enough, he does all of this while running an inn(not just an inn, a universe-wide inn, mind you), and even though another deadly adventure is a routine for him at this point, then what about catering to some of the strongest beings of his world?
This novel is an excellent masterwork, the likes of which 99% of modern fiction fails to compare with. The language itself is easily understandable yet eloquent. The novel’s pacing is consistent, with genuine, entertaining plot progression in every chapter. I haven’t read a single paragraph that disappointed me in any way, and the main character is entirely agreeable. The humour the main character employs in dialogue, as well as the framing of certain situations, perfectly balances the serious tone and the action-packed scenes. Unlike other novels, the humour doesn’t take away from the seriousness the characters face. Lastly, unlike other ‘system’-based novels, the magic/cultivation system feels more or less plausible. My immersion is never broken by a gamified world or implausibility.
If you cannot tell by the name... then full disclosure, I'm the author :P I personally love the book and recommend anyone who likes anime, manga, cultivation novels etc. give it a try!
