I don't think I have ever read a storyline so stupidly written. Evil stepmother and abusive father marries off his daughter to a Duke who only wants a marriage of companionship. He doesn't want to have sex with his wife. In is in love with his deceased wife. who has been dead for many years.

Philip Bolton Duke of Haddington was still in love with his deceased wife Mary!! This is a 3-party marriage. the story is all about Mary and Philip not Philip and his new wife Margaret!! He is cold and indifferent to Margaret. Lucy Philips's sister also, hate and mistreats Margaret.

Poor Margaret can't catch a break. She is beautiful and kind. All she wants is to be accepted in a family. Eventually Philip begins to warm up to her. But refuses to consummate the marriage.

What really makes the story terrible is Margarets stepmother Edith attacks her with a knife to her throat threating to kill her. Edith wants the large pen money she gets from Philip each month. When Philip arrives to save Margaret Edith threatens him and wants money to pay off their debts and Margarets monthly pen money. WTF!! Instead of having Edith arrested and tried for attempted murder Margaret ask Philip to help her and her father get out of debt. So he gives her a pass and pays off their debts. Even that isn't enough for Edith she still wants a monthly stipend twice the amount of Margarets. What's wrong with this writing. Edith should be in jail and her husband should be sent to debtor's prison. But Philips pay them off. He doesn't give Edith a monthly allowance, but he provides for her two daughter's dowry and provides them with a monthly allowance.

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME ON THIS STORY!! IT'S BONKERS!! BADLY WRITTEN!!!

Awful

It's probably one of the most poorly written books I have ever had the misfortune to read. It jumped from him avoiding her and treating her awful to "I love you", what crock.

So sad

I loved Margaret the heroine. She was kind and sweet and deserved better than what her stepmother and Father sold her into. When she found out that Philip was never going to love her and consummate the marriage, because he still loved his dead wife, it was heartbreaking. I cried at her anguish and when his little sister laid into her, I was livid. That scene really got to me. Her stepmother was actually very evil. That was astonishing. I loved how Philip finally pulled his head out of his, you know, and stood up for her. The epilogue was great too.

Sappy and shallow

Definitely not a favorite. Characters were likeable but very one dimensional. I managed to get through it simply to find out how it wrapped up. Unsatisfying. The climax started out promising but fell flat. Not to my liking.

Kind of meh

Margaret was written like a Disney heroine. No matter how much one was thrown at her she reacted like Cinderella with her charm and good cheer and blah. I thought that birds would come and sew her wardrobe and sing while they did.

PHILLIP AND MARGARET SO MUCH GOING ON - IT'S ALL ABOUT THE CONTRACT

LADY MARGARET - A very kind and gentle young lady ready to help anyone, she loved her two sister's and was not jealous of them at all, Margaret however was treated with contempt by her father and stepmother, all she wants is to be loved and wanted.
Her father and stepmother want her gone, they inform her she is to be married to a Duke, they had never seen him, they believed him to be elderly (they did not care) as long as she was gone, this was arranged by a matchmaker, they did not tell her the terms of the contract. (Margaret - was hopeful that at least she would be wanted).
PHILLIP DUKE OF HADDINGTON - had shut himself away from society since his accident and was not bothered about them, he wanted to be alone except his young sister Lucy was of an age
where she needed to go into society, his cousin Evan told him he needed to marry for his reputation and sister's sake, his cousin arranged a marriage for him through a matchmaker following Phillips instructions, it must be soon and no need meet that will happen at the church and not concerned with what the bride looks like but MUST agree to the terms of the contract.
I LOVED THIS THE CHARACTERS ALL OF THEM BRILLIANT LOVE IT WHEN YOU CAN VISUALISE EACH CHARACTER - A FEW SURPRISES IN THIS AND LOTS OF HEARTBREAK FOR BOTH PHILLIP AND MARGARET.
READ IT YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED, SO MUCH GOING ON I READ IT IN ONE GO BECAUSE EACH PAGE MADE ME WANT TO FIND OUT ON THE NEXT PAGE.

Fairy tale love story.

I really enjoyed the story of Phillip the Duke of Haddington and Margaret, the eldest daughter of an Earl. Margaret lived an unhappy life with her father, her step mother and 2 step sisters. Although she loved both her step sisters, her step mother was cruel to her at every turn and her father did nothing to support her. When she found out they had secured a match for her without her knowledge, she was somewhat glad even though she knew nothing of her betrothed or the arrangement. Phillip agreed to marry and arranged a matchmaker to find his wife so that he would have a woman in the home to support the Dukedom and his sister. It was a marriage of convenience only. Unfortunately no one told Margaret. Phillip was still grieving his first wife even though it had been many years. He could not bring himself to love another. However Margaret was beginning to wear him down. Her wicked step mother had plans of her own and began to bring her plan to fruition. Margaret had a sad life but never lost sight of of her kindness and willingness to help others. I just wish the step mother didn’t get off so easy.

Wow, just wonderful

Wow, what a story and how it unfold, from the step mother’s cruelty to the sister in law’s spitefulness to the husband’s deciding to condemn Margaret (his wife) to a loveless marriage without her consent. Even knowing this is the same woman he picked up on a rainy night a few days earlier and could not stop thinking or dreaming about her. I loved how the story’s heroine continued to be sweet and understanding winning over her sister in law to her being able to get her husband to open up about his first wife and the tragedy surrounding his leg injury and her death and the hero and heroine starting to show the beginning of a budding romance and love for each other. But most importantly it exposed her stepmother’s hatred for her stepdaughter and the length she would go through to get what she wanted. But end the end love prevailed and there was a happily ever after. This is the type of story you don’t mine reading again even though you already know the out come.

MIXED EMOTIONS

This book had me going back and forth. I thought the original interaction in the carriage during the storm was super cute and special. It showed the connection right away, but then I felt like it took too long for them to meet at the altar.
While I thought Margaret was sweet and fiery in the beginning, she turned into a complete doormat. It just seemed like for the bulk of the book she was just walking around clueless and positive, while she was being treated poorly by everyone. I thought it was ridiculous that they just let the stepmother get away with everything. Even if they weren’t going to have her arrested, there weren’t any real consequences and she was evil.
Philip had such a strong reaction to Margaret when he met her, but he spent so much time ignoring her and focusing on his deceased first wife, Mary. It took way too long for him to open up and allow Margaret in his heart. His sister Lucy was awful, and i didn’t like how they allowed her to be so mean to Margaret just because she loved Mary.

This story line will have you turning page after page to what can possibility happen next. Lady Margaret runs away from her home when her father and stephmother tell her they have arranged a marriage for her with a Duke Sexton and that is all she is told. As Margaret is walking trying to calm her mind, it begins to rain. Margaret gets lost until she finally sees a road she knows will lead her back home. A carriage soon stops due to the down pour raining and offers her a ride. At first she refuses, but after the gentleman inside insists she agrees. After entering the carriage, Margaret and the gentleman begin to talk and enjoy their time together. As she arrives back home, Margaret can only image what it would be like if the Duke she has been betrothed to would be the gentleman in the carriage. This an emotional story on many levels and I think you will thoroughly enjoy it. The extended epilogue is a fine finish to the story.

A steamy story. This is the third book by this author I have read in quick succession, and this is the best so far. The evil step mother and Margaret’s father are maybe a bit over done - he doesn’t explain the marriage terms, which in themselves seem odd. Yes a marriage of convenience could be all about just companionship, but would they really need to be written in the contract? Then the Duke keeps blowing hot and cold, and I think Lucy’s behaviour was a bit over the top. As ever this author seems to have a sudden unexpected event toward the end. In this case evil step mother drags off step daughter who is now a duchess at a ball and threatens her with a knife. I am not sure these stories need these type of events. Why not just threaten with scandal? Given her unpredictability it is also a surprise the Duke stops her arrest. I did not hate the book and did find aspects of the story interesting so probably 3.5 stars.

melhor evitar a fadiga.

Looking For A Happy Life
This new series of Brides of Convenience starts out with a Heart Wrenching Tale. She have to deal with her Evil Stepmother and he morning the loss of his dead wife. Both needing to wed not only make an dynamic couple, but an interesting storyline. Many emotions, secrets, pasts, evil plots, hovering over.
Lady Margaret Dunn and Philip Duke of Haddington met at there wedding. A marriage arranged by a broker and she had no knowledge of the person or details. What was worse ? Her Evil Stepmother or a Betrothed she didn’t know ? Only did she know him ? Ever shown any kindness or love was she asking for too much ?
This Amazing Story Connects with you from the start and warms you to the end. You only want to see Margaret get her happy ending .

Wedded Bliss

I loved Margaret and Philips story. He was looking for a wife for convenience and she was holding out for love. But when they are thrown together by a contract with a matchmaker it will take all his fortitude to stay away from his new bride.
Margaret new her stepmother did not like her from the way she was treated all these years and her father not standing up for her. But when she entered this marriage she thought it would be different. She received not only cold shoulders from her husband but real hostility from her new sister-in-law.
What can she do but run away from her problems, but running actually might help her.
A beautifully written story with a wonderful ending.

In the beginning of this story, Margaret is at the mercy of her ineffectual father and her evil stepmother. She agrees to marry a Duke sight unseen just to break free of her bad family situation. Unknown to Margaret, Phillip is a grieving widower who does not wish to make an emotional investment in their marriage. On the other hand, Margaret is determined to win the lonely man over, because she feels that she deserves happiness in her life. Despite the wicked stepmother's plotting, Margaret and Phillip manage to fall in love. This book was an enjoyable read and the ending was quite happy.
I received a free ARC from the author and this is my honest opinion.

That one was okay.
It is a bit spicy.
The two main characters are likeable but I didn't get the full picture of them. The hero didn't apologize enough to his wife and we didn't get many cute scenes with them together. So I couldn't see them as a well functioning couple.

I didn't like the forgiveness trope at all in this one. The sister Lucy's actions don't have any consequence at all except for one brief, stern talking she is subjected to. She was a brat but also around 20? Wth. She should have grovelled.

And the whole parents thing? I don't have anything about the evil stepmother tripe but the heroine gave in way too easily when it came to punishing her for her acts. So foolish.

Such a lovely story

This story of second chances for both bride and groom though in different ways. Margaret lost her mother early and was left with her father, A sheepish step mother and two half sisters that she adored. Philip lost his wife shortly after marrying her and waited several years to marry. A marriage broker brought these two souls together and we see how their story develops, A bit of spice in a few areas but mostly a story of finding love after sorrow. Great story and loved the characters.

captivating

Excellent story of development of true love between Margaret and Phillip.
It started as an arranged marriage
of convenience, but as their interactions with each other became more intimate they developed a deep connection and fall in love with each other.
The main characters are strong and intelligent.
I liked that Margaret didn’t give up on Phillip and fights for his love. I recommend this story to anyone who likes to read romance.

A lovely book!

What a wonderful book. I love story lines with heroes and heroines that have issues. The H or h comes into their lives and shows them how to love. This book flows so wonderfully well, with the usual villain and side characters that keep the plot moving. Ava never disappoints! I highly recommend this book.

marriage contracts can be broken

Wow! I absolutely don’t know how Margaret put up with all she did. Her stepmother was awful. Her father wouldn’t stand up to his wife. The Duke was hurting but needed a wife to help with his sister. What a way to start a marriage. Many different things were happening during this story. A good read.

Such a lovely story

My first book from Ava MacAdams. I chose this book because I like books on the theme of arranged marriage. I really enjoyed this lovely story. I rate the book 4/5 because the story contained lengthy descriptions for me.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this romance. However, I was sickened by the way Margaret was treated by her Stepmother and her father on a daily basis. The author is talented in creating scenes that set your teeth on edge with family issues.
