We’ve been sold the lie that one’s story is only worth sharing if it’s perfectly manufactured to convey victory or success. This false belief overlooks the most important those of the messy journeys and imperfect lives. That is where the lessons hide; challenges are the secret sauce of life, not something to be avoided or glossed over in retellings.
Lessons from Nowhere is the crazy, messy story of Kelly Muir, who moved on average once every seven months for the first twenty years of her life. When asked where she’s from, she answers, “Nowhere.” This compelling memoir shares Kelly’s journey living in the midst of chaos, drugs, and mental illness and the wisdom this ultimately beautiful life gave her.
Lessons from Nowhere illustrates why your story matters and encourages you to embrace it—because the most powerful stories we can learn from are our own.
These may be Lessons from Nowhere but they apply everywhere.
The author has both an amazing story to tell and a tremendous voice in which to tell it. What a long strange trip it has been as the song says and this book tells an entrancing story so strange and interesting that it is extremely difficult to put down . The Lessons from Nowhere were used in the creation of the authors amazing life. This book was recommended by a friend of mine as a must read even though autobiographies are an area of literature where I rarely venture. It is a unique experience that does teach powerful lessons without being preachy for even a nanosecond.
I learned many things in reading this book even though I really can't say I had expectations one way or another when I bought it. The story is so good you will not realize just how many life lessons are being communicated. But the lessons are so important that I also have to recommend it on the interweb as a must read.
Kelly Muir has tapped into one of life’s universal truths in this well written chronicle of her life’s journey. Inner struggles, when faced with courage and acceptance reveal character and inner resources that one may have never discovered without challenges.
Strength and resiliency are built over time, and hardship provides eveyone a personal dojo. Read this book not as a prescription for how to succeed but as a travelogue that reminds you that you are on the right path as long as your journey illuminates life’s lessons.
I'm giving this 5 stars because I thoroughly enjoyed reading it & it is super well-thought out & well-written. However, I'm not often a reader of memoirs or autobiographies, so I don't know what my comparison scale is, and also I'm biased because I went to high school with Kelly.
Though Kelly and I were friends back in the day and I knew some of the darker aspects of her story, reading this memoir I realize how little I comprehended what she was dealing with. This slim volume had me wrapped up in reminiscing and understanding there was a lot more happening than it seemed at the time.
Nevertheless, I think anyone would enjoy this book and I hope it gets wide distribution. Her story is unique, compelling, and inspiring. I love especially the way she framed the whole thing as a foil to contemporary lies about storytelling -- the way that we think stories must be about extraordinary moments, and that they must end in a nice little bow and a happy-ever-after.
Wow!!! I don’t know Kelly Muir but live in a nearby community and attended her book reading/signing hosted by a mutual friend. I bought her book there and picked it up off my shelf last night because it’s pretty short and figured it would get better across the finish line of my 2023 reading challenge (which it did).
I expected a decent read because I knew a little of Kelly’s story but I was blown away. I won’t give away the plot but she had a difficult childhood. I won’t say she “overcame” it because it clearly made her who she is today. But Kelly not only tells a great story that keeps you turning the pages, but inspires and teaches as well. I definitely will be buying more copies to pass along as gifts.
I can’t wait to read the next segment of Kelly’s story.
I loved this book! Amazing story of resilience and the power of hope and goals. Engaging, beautifully written. I found it hard to put down but I also wanted to savor it so made myself step away to digest and think about what I’d just read. Kelly’s book left me with a lot to think about on a deeper level. What’s your story? What have you learned along the way? What’s your journey? I am glad to have read this book and highly recommend it!
Kelly tells her life story up through her 20’s as she grew up in a dysfunctional household and was uprooted time and again. Those moves provided the lessons that gave her the confidence to succeed in her sport of tai kwon do and to build a business.
It was especially interesting since I grew up in Bexley and live nearby.
It’s great to read about a less-than-perfect life that is still so inspiring! Kelly Muir experienced so many crazy things but continued to work toward her goals and learn from it all.
Kelly’s story of her unique and challenging upbringing is inspiring. I appreciated her honesty, humor, and grace while telling her story. I hope she writes more!
I really enjoyed this book! Well written and interesting. My only drawback is that I wish it were longer! So many interesting stories and I wanted more.
Kelli is an inspiration. I’ve always had deep respect for Kelli. I went to school with Kelli but didn’t really know her but had heard stories about her. My children had opportunities to take lessons from her in her martial arts school. She is a great teacher. Since I have read her book. I have a far better understanding of her and her spirit. Her story is inspiring for everyone to read.
