The Sapling: Poetry by David Nichols

Rate this book
I don’t often share my love of poetry with my poker buddies. I guess that’s how life is. But the older I get, the less I care. Poetry is cool.

When I do tell people that I write poetry, I often hear them say, “I don’t get it.” What is there not to get? Words have meaning. When you put them together with rhythm or interesting sound combinations, even better. The form elevates the meaning. Mysterious words also make you think. They form new connections in the mind and draw out what is already there. It’s like looking at a picture of somebody else only to realize you are looking at your own reflection. Sometimes you have to say something surprising to get people’s attention.

My wife is worried that people will read my poems and think I have a hard family life or something. That’s not true. My life is great. Well, mostly. I have been reading poetry for years, but I didn’t start writing it until I had a year of health problems and suffering. I struggled with awful insomnia for nine of the worst months of my life. Somehow, poetry helped. Somehow, beauty has more meaning when you suffer. You realize that what you thought was life...was not. You realize that the little, beautiful, things are more important and more truthful. They are one of the unexpected doorways to what really does matter. Doorways to love, to your deepest desires, leading you to more than the stuff of Earth. Beautiful poems are like freckles on the face of God.

And my poems are, well…. my first try.

This is David's first collection of poetry from 2020-22. There are various types of poems including humorous, reflective, as well as painful and serious.
