The genre of historical mysteries set in the 1920's is getting to be a favorite of mine. This story is set in Manhattan and centered around a music theater. I really liked the main characters, PI and former police detective Jax Diamond, his K-9 partner Ace, and singer Laura Gravestone. They are brought together when Jax is hired by a wife whose husband wrote music at the theater to see if he is cheating. Unfortunately, Jax is watching him and finds him dead. I enjoyed watching Jax and Laura become friends but Ace is so cute as he becomes attached to Laura. As it becomes apparent that there are shenanigans surrounding the theater, Jax and his old partner Tim work together to investigate things. Great mystery to unravel and I look fward to more in the series. I was gifted a copy by the author with no expectations of a rating or review.

Disclaimer: I was given the opportunity to edit this wonderful book, but that doesn't affect my honest review below.

This is a fantasically fun cozy mystery set in 1923 New York. The characters don’t just jump off the page, they pull you into their world. Jax’s sidekick, Ace, the wonderfully charming German Shepherd, will make his way into your heart in no time. The setting in 1923 New York City is well described and transports us back to that place and time. The portrayal of Coney Island makes you feel as if you are there, hanging on for dear life in the Steeplechase or winning a prize in the baseball toss. The mystery is so well done, with puzzles and red herrings that will keep you guessing. The main characters are complex and interesting. Jax, private investigator and former cop, has his own secrets to keep, and Laura’s talents are revealed to expand way beyond singing.

There is a sweet romance, but the complex and fascinating mystery is the star of the show, along with the lovable Ace. I highly recommend this book, the first in the Jax Diamond Mysteries series, to all mystery fans and to anyone who loves reading about our canine friends.

I received a free copy of this book from the author. My review is voluntary and my opinions are my own.

I loved this roaring 20s mystery! This book had all of the flair of the time period and had me guessing who the killer was.

The characters were fun and went well together. I was surprised by Laura's bravery and Jax's link to his past. Plus who doesn't love a loyal dog too!

I had a hard time putting this book down and am excited for a sequel to this theater mystery!

Gail Meath has written a spectacular murder mystery set in 1923. Jax Diamond is a very special Detective and his sidekick, a German Shepherd name Ace, is completely wonderful and lovable. Together Jax and Ace work to solve the murder of a playwright, then add the murder of an actress, the disappearance of a theater employee, and finally the victims seem to multiply.

Jax and Ace are also responsible for the safety of a Broadway actress, Laura Graystone, which provides wonderful moments of humor and romance along with some terror. There are unexpected twists and turns as the plot develops and the overall effect was a thrilling finish.

I received a free copy of this book for my honest voluntary review from Book Sirens. I read this book in a single sitting - it was that riveting! I enjoyed all aspects of the story and look forward to the next book in the series.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with the copy of this book!

I read a book by Gail Meath a while ago and I enjoyed it very much, so I decided to see more of her work and I have to say: I wasn't disappointed. This was yet another pleasant read! The mystery, the dots waiting to be connected with the answers always a step ahead and of course, the Roaring Twenties made for a perfect getaway from reality (and my exams 😬). There was a lovely romance developing, but honestly, I was more interested in the crime and mystery. And I am very much so invested in the deck of cards and their meaning. Is there more to it? The book ends with a beautiful cliffhanger, or better say, some questions still left unresolved. One story is finished, but there was a path that leads right into the next adventure.

Jax Diamond--- my new hero. Handsome, smart, with a memory for every detail; also a true gentleman; it would be easy to fall in love with him.

I am a bridge player so names that remind me of playing cards are favorites. We have such a name in Jax Diamond, and he owns a German Shepherd named Ace. I assume he is the Ace of Diamonds!!

In this, the first book in the Jax Diamond Series, we are introduced to the former policeman, now a detective, and his trusty sidekick, Ace. Jax has been asked to tail Sam Sanders, a playwright. Sam is working on a new play inspired by the lead of the play currently showing at the Ambassador Theater. Sam dies. It seems like a heart attack, but Jax is convinced it is murder.

Jax enlists the assistance of his former partner, Sergeant Tim Murphy. He also meets Laura Graystone, the star of the play currently showing. Her nickname is Songbird and the new play is named that as well.

Suspects – at least two
The widow of Sam Sanders
The son of the owner of the Ambassador – Robert Ashworth
It will probably be somebody else entirely.

I especially fell in love with Laura Greystone – a VERY strong female character. She is a beautiful rising Broadway star. She ends up being very ingenious and possesses talents that get her AND Jax out of dangerous jams. Of course, Jax falls in love with her too.

5 stars

Thank you Gail Meath. I plan to read all of this series. Next up: Framed

Jax Diamond is a quirky Private Detective with an amazing partner in his German shepherd, Ace. When the man he has been hired to follow dies, things start to get interesting.

Laura Gladstone is an up and coming Broadway star and she is mixed up in this mystery. Jax finds himself growing fond of Laura (and the feeling is mutual!).

Set in 1923 in NYC, this is a wonderful cozy mystery. The author has done a great job in setting the atmosphere of this era with its speakeasys and jazz clubs. The characters are charming and likeable and the story moves at a fast pace. There are enough twists in the story to keep it interesting. All in all, this is a clean mystery, full of emotion and action. I was given the chance to read an ARC of this book through ARC Anonymous and chose to review it.

When I was given the opportunity to listen to the audiobook version of this book, I jumped at the chance since it is such a wonderful and engaging book. The narrator did a great job and I think I enjoyed this second time around even more than the first. This series has become one of my favorites and I look forward to this sleuthing trio's next adventure!

Songbird is the first book I've read by Gail Meath, and while not my usual type of read, I have to say I really enjoyed this story. I liked the way the connection between Jax and Laura grew throughout the story and I enjoyed both characters equally, which doesn't happen all that often for me. I'm a real big fan of the character building within this book; Jax and Laura have layers that are slowly revealed and some of these layers were surprising in a good way. But while there is focus on the main characters, central side characters are portrayed in an intriguing way as well, enough to make them an integral part of the story without interfering with it. The hunt for the killer had me intrigued and the story took twists and turns at the right times to keep me on my toes. Combine all this with an interesting time setting and you end up with a very good book, that's absolutely worth the read.

Thank you NetGalley for the eARC. I have just recently found this author. After reading her previous book, I went in search of other titles and lo and behold a day later this book was being offered. I, first and foremost, am a lover of black and white films. I dedicate my Saturdays to watching old movies with my mother so it was easy to mentally picture the going ons in this novel. I was quickly enthralled by the whodunnit feel of the book! This was a very good book. I recommend this author to anyone for any reason. She seems to have a little something for everyone!

I am reviewing a copy of Songbird through the author and Netgalley:

In Songbird we will meet Jax Diamond, a sharp, sophisticated, skilled, no-nonsense private detective. Or is he?

Always by his side is his canine partner, Ace, a fierce and unrelenting German Shepherd whose mere presence terrorizes criminals into submission. Or maybe not.

The two of them though are a lot smarter than they look. And they have their hands full when a playwright’s death is declared natural causes, and his new manuscript worth a million bucks is missing.

A beautiful rising broadway star Laura Graystone, is dragged into the heart of their investigation, and she’s none too happy about it. Especially when danger first strikes, and she needs to rely on her own ingenuity to save their hides.

Join Jax, Laura and Ace on a fun yet deadly ride during the Roaring Twenties that takes twists and turns, and a race against time to find the real murderer before he/she/they stop them permanently.

If you’re looking for a fun to read cozy mystery set in the 1920’s, I would recommend Songbird!

Well this is a really lovely story mixed in with a brutal investigation into murder!
It begins when a private investigator finds a man slumped over his desk, it's assumed that he's had a heart attack but Jax Diamond believes otherwise.
This is a captivating read. It's set in a theatre in Americs during the prohibition. The star of the latest show is Laura, who is named Songbird.
There is a whole host of characters, both fun and cruel. I had no clue who the killer was going to be.
The growing friendship between Jax and Laura was just beautiful. It was written so well and added a light aside to the Murders! Ace, Jax's dog was the star of the book, because who doesn't love a smart and loyal pooch.
I loved the history of both main characters, and how it impacted their outlooks on life, yet it seemed to bring them closer.
For such a relatively short book, it crams an awful lot of back story in.
I hope there is more from these two, Ace and Jax, hopefully Laura too.

Songbird is Book 1 in the Jax Diamond Mysteries by Gail Meath. Songbird is written in 1923 NYC. This is the era of musical theater and Broadway. Sam Sanders is writing a musical for 23 year old Laura Graystone. Sam writes in small apartment and always takes his dinner in a lunch pail. PI Jax Diamond goes into the apartment when Sam does not come out. The death begins a can’t put down book. I really enjoyed how the story developed and the characters expanded. I always wanted to read just one more page/chapter. As the clues were given, I would change my mind about who the killer was. I liked the ending and can’t wait to read book 2. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

Songbird surprised me in many ways, all of them good. An intriguing story with well-developed characters who grab hold of your interest, this was a mystery with a difference.

Meath weaves the various threads into an unforgettable tapestry that you're almost sorry to find reaching its conclusion. But only "almost" because you wouldn't have missed the denouement for anything.

A great read, a definite page-turner that I read in one sitting, I look forward to more in this series. I think you will too!

When I read the blurb for this book I had high hopes, and needless to say, this book did not disappoint. Songbird is set in the 1920’s when theater was big. This is a murder mystery that will have you thinking of Agatha Christie books and just as well written. This story takes twists and turns that will leave the reader guessing and along the way is a very enjoyable ride.

Gail Meath has done a wonderful job weaving a story of deception, deceit and lies. I hope she will write more in the near future because I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

This was very entertaining and provided a glimpse into the New York theatrical life during the early part of the 20th century. It is a departure from Gail's other works and I credit her for stepping into a different genre. It's a good, fast read and I recommend it if you're looking for an enjoyable book to read on a cold wintry day.

For anyone who loves a rip-roaring good historical mystery, “Songbird” by Gail Meath fits neatly on the shelf alongside Agatha Christie and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story is reflective of Christie’s astute detecting skills by use of characters such as Poirot and Marple; and is equally reminiscent of Fitzgerald’s eye for the era of the 1920s New York lifestyle.

The story opens with a death, which is always a great kickstarter for a mystery novel – a real whodunnit, “Clue”-like scenario as a talented composer drops dead after adding the finishing touches to what he imagines is his masterpiece – a musical written especially for the Broadway stage and for one lovely actress known as the “Songbird.”

Enter Jax Diamond, a savvy and handsome private detective with a few secrets up his sleeve, whose name alone conjures the reader’s curiosity – after all, what parent would name their child ‘Jax Diamond’? This little bit of information reveals in the storyline in a natural and informative way, adding depth to Jax’s character. What is determined by the coroner to be nothing more than death by natural causes is a cause for concern for Jax, after all, some of the clues at the crime scene don’t add up... and he, along with his trusty sidekick, Ace (a beautiful German Shepherd who has a ‘nose’ for investigating), is determined to get to the bottom of what really happened to Sam Sanders.

And the clues stack up, leading him back stage of some of Time Square’s renowned theaters, and in close company with Laura Graystone, a young rising star called the “Songbird” in some of the theater reviews of the New York Times. One of the clues – a mysterious lily left on Sam Sander’s jacket... and the single white gardenia left in Ms Graystone’s dressing room... are just some of the clues leading to the murderer; and also links a ‘cold case’ murder of another famous Broadway star whose death paves the way for Laura’s rise.

This clever story winds the reader through the streets of 1920s New York like a native city tour guide, adding such absorbing detail about the glamous fashions, the snarky ‘flapper’ gabbing between Laura and her friends, breaking the Prohibition rules, sneaking into speakeasy pubs, riding the rides at Coney Island, and the changing attitudes for men and women during this transitioning time in history. Along with the captivating characters, the story engages you and you find yourself quickly turning the pages to find the next clue along with Jax and Laura.

And the budding romance between Jax and Laura is a nice addition to the storyline, as well as how the entwining and revealing resolution to the case links Jax to his own troubling past.

This definitely a good cozy mystery, one you can read in one sitting, or perhaps linger over a quiet weekend with a glass of wine and a roaring fire while listening to Benny Goodman wail some Jazz in the background. I, for one, am a huge Gatsby fanatic, so I was utterly charmed by this story, not to mention there is a dog as a character. By the end, you just want to snuggle up to Ace!

This book is quite a departure from Ms Meath’s weighty story of Agustina Sargossa, a brave young woman who joined the fight in Barcelona Spain in 1803, in her novel “Agustina of Aragon”, but just as she did with that five-star book, she shows her skill as a writer by switching gears and plunging into the mysteries of New York City without any missteps along the way. And she does all this while giving the reader a first-class mystery novel with just enough tidbits along the way to allow the reader to follow the trail and try to find the guilty party – all done is a believable and refreshing way.

Again, Ms Meath has earned a ‘five star’ rating from The Historical Fiction Company and the “Highly Recommended” award.

I previously read Framed (book 2) and learned of this book- I was hoping there wasn't too many spoilers in book 2... thankful there wasn't. Songbird captivated my attention immediately, the mystery as well as constant action and twists brought so much anticipation to this read. Gail is a wonderful storyteller- I enjoy the historical 1920s read- but it is amazing how much I have gotten use to cellphones wondering why they have to use a pay phone and an operator connects the call- I vaguely remember those days and the pay phones (it was 10 cents in my day until it went up to a quarter for local calls- then along came the new car phones.... love the mystery and romance aspects thrown in there as well. I'm ready to read more about Jax, Ace, Laura and the rest in book 3.

Set in the 1920s Laura Graystone is the songbird of the title, an up and coming musical theatre actress who has just been thrust into the limelight when a leading lady is murdered. Jax is the cocky and confident PI, a former detective who keeps close contact with his ex police partner, Murph. This is a really enjoyable murder mystery with a bit of romance thrown in.

It is really well written, with several plot lines mingling together, full of atmosphere and feels authentic to the period with Prohibition and underground clubs included. We gradually get both main characters back stories filtered in during the investigations. And both characters are really easy to like. A really enjoyable read. This being the first in the series, I look forward to the next book.

A fantastic murder mystery set in 1920's New York....

I absolutely loved this book from the start to the end. It was truly a fantastic cosy murder mystery and cannot wait for the sequel to be released next year (2022).

The book is set in New York and provided an authentic portrayal of the 1920's and the Broadway scene. From the outset I was mesmerised by the descriptions bringing this era to life and thought the characters were just fabulous. I also absolutely fell in love with Ace, a very adorable, brave and loyal German Shepard.

Laura and Jax were both so likeable. To me they were more than just characters guiding you through a murder mystery, they were two characters that I felt I knew as friends. I felt like I went on a journey with both of them and the romance element was a lovely surprise. Although, this did not detract from the main murder mystery element of the book, which was equally well done with some surprise twists along the way.

The author really had a magic talent of transporting me back in time and into the pages of the book. I especially loved the descriptions of Coney Island, and after reading, I felt that I had actually spent an afternoon there with the characters.

Additionally, I liked the insertion of the pictures at the start of each chapter. This was a great way of capturing the content and theme, whilst adding another layer of intrigue and depth to the characters, circumstances and surroundings.

Overall, I loved this book and it was a brilliant read. I'm so glad I have stumbled upon this author and looking forward to the next book in the Jax Diamond mysteries and to reading some of her other books.

I would like to thank the author, Gail Meath, and Book Sirens for an advance reading copy of this book. Even though I received this as an ARC, I may purchase the paperback book as I enjoyed it so much.

For the longest time I have loved the Gail Meath’s book’sAnd although all of her books have varying subject matter and genres, I was still surprised to see this one about a PI. Of course, when I started reading it I could certainly tell it was one of her books and although not big on cozy mysteries. I am certainly big on this authors books. When Jack’s diamond and his lovable dog face start investigating the death of a playwright, who is murder was called natural causes. Jack’s is in for the case of his life. Laura Greystone although a singer on Broadway is frustrated when she is dragged into the case but her attraction for Jack’s and lovable Ace Will melt her frustrations. With a strong and beautiful female character and a dashing intelligent handsome male character is a recipe for all of Gail meath’s books, but her clever plots are the seasoning that makes each book unique. I absolutely love her books and cannot get enough of them. I do hope Jack’s diamond becomes a serious and I can read more about Ace. I highly recommend this book and if you love cozy historical mysteries as this one is set in the 1920s, you will definitely love this book. I received this book from Books sirens, but I am leaving this review totally voluntarily. Please forgive any grammatical or punctuation errors as I am blind and it is impossible to fix them while using screen reader. All of the opinions expressed or authentic and all my own.

I’m not sure why but initially I couldn’t help imagining Jax sounding like Columbo, with his rumpled raincoat and unassuming demeanour. I even did the voice in my head. Maybe it’s the wrinkled brown suit. But once we learn more about him, we discover that Jax is younger and much better looking!

From the Jazz Clubs of the Roaring Twenties to the Broadway musicals and the famous Coney Island funfair, Songbird is a breathtaking ride through the streets of New York. But it’s not all fun and games. It opens with the demise of musical playwright Samuel Sanders – his death slow and painful. The police think he died of natural causes, but our intrepid private detective Jax Diamond has a nose for these things – a bit like Ace the German Shepherd has a nose for tracking people. But if Sanders was murdered, what was the motive?

Beautiful singer, Laura Graystone, nicknamed Songbird, recently took over the main part in a musical after the previous lead was murdered in a random break-in that went horribly wrong. But was it random and are the two deaths linked? And is Laura in danger too?

Well that’s for Jax to find out, with the help of his furry sidekick Ace, songbird Laura herself, and police officer Tim Murphy. It’s a rollicking ride with lots of red herrings and delightful twists and turns, and the two protagonists’ blossoming romance is a joy to read, without being soppy or sentimental.

Many thanks to @zooloo2008 for inviting me to be part of this blog tour.

I loved this book. Set in 1920’s New York, at the time of prohibition, it’s a classic, slightly tongue-in-cheek detective book and Book 1 in the Jax Diamond series. Think Sam Spade meets Judy Garland. A heartwarming cozy mystery with a slew of potential killers and a cast of wonderful characters and as an aside that cover is beautiful.

Briefly, when a composer dies in suspicious circumstances, and the score to his new musical disappears, Diamond and his sidekick, German Shepard Ace, are on the case, working alongside the official police investigation. When connections are made to another earlier death the stakes rise. The missing musical score was written for Laura Graystone, a musical star who has been called Songbird. Together Jax, Laura and Ace determine to find the killer and they make a formidable team; but Cupid is hovering above Jax and Laura and they are clearly falling in love. Can they solve the mystery?

I love this book. Did I already say that! I loved everything about it. The romance, the mystery, the theatre, the suspense but most of all I fell for Ace! I will be at the front of the queue for book two because there is going to be one; Gail Meath said so. Yes it’s ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Songbird by Gail Meath transports readers back to the twenties, inside Broadway’s intrigues and glamor. The book’s pace is swift, and each scene is absorbing. It includes engaging and complex characters such as Laura Graystone, a young, upcoming star dubbed the “Songbird” by the New York Times. I loved that the story’s plot is layered and not straightforward. There are many revelations in the book and some exciting action scenes that add tension to the novel. The story’s end is also engrossing and rewarding. Jax’s difficult past is explored, and his attraction to Laura introduces another thrilling sub-plot to the story. Songbird by Gail Meath is a fine and captivating historical novel with endearing characters. Readers will love its surprising twists, creative storyline, and exhilarating setting.
