The odds are against Mathison and his Marines. The Republic has abandoned them, and the Governance has collapsed. The vanhat are sweeping through human space almost unopposed, crushing the few humans still scattered throughout the ruins of the Governance.
While some survivors seek to rally and rescue who they can, the Governance has retreated to Sol, where it cowers behind its countless automated weapons platforms, closing itself off from the rest of the galaxy. Unfortunately, the enemy has already breached the line and is just waiting its time to strike.
But Marines don’t give up. There is a rumor that researchers have discovered a weapon that can be used against the vanhat, and the Marines must infiltrate a vanhat-infested SOG star base to recover the secret location of the research facility.
Hunted, will the Marines discover the weapon they need, or are they running into the trap that will be the end of them?

Growing up in Europe during the height of the cold war and then serving in a Marine SOC (Special Operations Capable) Battalion during the collapse of Communism provided a lot of life experience and a unique perspective on life and the world. The first novel he read was Jules Vern's 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea' when he was ten and has been reading ever since.
Before the Marines he was a pocket protector wearing nerd, after the Marines he held jobs as a Security officer/Patrol Sergeant, Lieutenant and other odd specialized jobs like body guard or surveillance, and ended up brushing off the pocket protector to become a Computer Consultant.
These days he dreams of quitting his day job as a computer consultant to work full time as a writer and dad.
This book is still kind of confusing. Again, we have to get over the ton of Swedish, Finnish, and Chinese names, that are hard to pronounce. I have no idea how to pronounce “Zhang Xiao” (I think it means Lieutenant Colonel) nor “Ting Hui”, the Lt. Col.’s name. These Chinese names show up a lot at the beginning of this book so be ready for that. Ting Hui and her meager command are huddled together in some kind of bunker on an ice world guarding some kind of monster in a box! Yeah, that’s my take on it. The planet has been taken over by some kind of monsters that have killed all the other humans and are now trying to kill what’s left of Ting’s people. They have some kind of Inkeri generator that can send out a pulse every so often when does kill these creatures, but it’s also have a terrible effect on the bodies of her troops.
They can’t run the generator all the time, so they have to fight off each attack until they can run the generator. That plus this creatures can turn the minds of her people are slowly decimating her command. She also has some kind of monster in a box in the basement of the bunker. She has a guard outside the room to the monster’s box, but the guard can be influenced by the monster since it can invade human minds. Every time the Lt. Col. goes down to the basement, she has to make sure the guard hasn’t turned against her and humanity. What Ting Hui is hoping against hope is that the Governance hasn’t forgotten about her command and they will someday be rescued. There may no be anyone left if that doesn’t come soon.
Ok, back to GySgt Mathison, USMC. He finds himself in charge of all the military that now exists in the system. Both The SOG (Social Organizational Governance) the Vapaus Republic have ceded command to GySgt Mathison since they would otherwise be fighting amongst themselves instead of trying to save what’s left of humanity. Mathison has sent the SOG fleet to look for more of their kind to get them to stop fighting against the Republic and join the cause to save humanity. He has taken his Norwegian troops and a Colonel Feng down to a planet already infested with monsters, I. e. humans who have been turned insane and recreated by some kind of entity from transition space. They need to find information on the origin of these creatures and try to put an end to their existence in this dimension. (At least I think that’s what they’re trying to do.)
This is a third thread that comes up in this book and I have no idea why it’s here. This has something to do with Israelites that have a secret base on some kind of moon in the Solar System. They seem to know about GySgt Mathison and his fight against the monsters. I don’t have a clue how they fit into the overall story. It seems to just add to my confusion.
I do know that GySgt Mathison and his troops that infiltrate this infected space station run in to a whole bunch of fighting. They barely manage to get out but they do get the data they need. This data leads them to the ice planet where the SOG Guard battalion is fighting for their life. This is the same unit lead by Zheng Xiao Ting Hui. Will that mean they will get rescued and what exactly will GySgt Mathison and his people do with the monster-in-a-box once they have it? I have no clue.
I suppose I’ll continue reading this series even though after five books it’s still confusing. Maybe it will be clearer in Book 6, “[Valhalla Awaits”](https://amzn.to/3PPZHbo), then again maybe not. It’s available on Amazon now.
Another great entry in the series. The Marines try to find a secret that might help them against the vanhat, amd end up having to fight their way through a space station and later on a secret SOG base. Stathis starts to show some character growth and you learn why he kept getting bumped down to private. It shows that there's more to him than meets the eye. Speaking of that, Feng continues to show he knows more than he's telling. A new character, Navinad, is introduced with a new faction, and is implied to have an SCBI or something like it. I'm very interested to see where he got it. Mathison continues to kick ass every step of the way. Nothing will stop him from completing his mission, and we're along for the ride
Yes, I had a blast reading this book. We have, as usual, lots of action. We also begin to understand the motivations and the drive of Colonel Commissar Feng a lot more and we finally understand why there was this intermezzo on an ice planet in the last books. Add an interesting new character who seems to be some sort of ambassador of benevolent entities, but who knows, and you're in for a hell of a ride. Can't wait to read the next ones.
This instalment has the proper action, violence and non-stop pace that this series is know for.
What sets this one apart is the there's plenty of comaraderie between the different, previously warring peoples, and plenty of philosophical dialogue on understanding each other differences.
I enjoyed that characters now crossed paths as well as the one new (or perhaps old) character...
This is an excellent edition to a superb series! Mr. Frisbee has crafted a wonderful world full of characters in which you will quickly become heavily invested. I can not recommend this series enough and can not wait for the next edition.
I really enjoyed this series. It was well written and very enjoyable. The various characters were well developed. I can't wait for more to see how the marines and their allies end up
The author has created and continues to expand a very interesting setting. While there are elements from such shows as buck Rodgers and battlestar galactica, the setting is original.
Really good series so far, characters, are very likeable. Lots of action, just an all round good read. If you are woke don't waste your time, but if not enjoy. View of socialism is spot on.
Don’t know how exactly the us Marines are going to help the galaxy but it seems like most people have given up compared to them! Entertaining escape here
Story arc is building well and still surprises with character development. Writing style is reminiscent of Timothy Zahn Cobra. Gotta go and start reading book six. Gotta find out what happens to Stathis evil twin. (He he fake spoiler)
I was told once by a professor of English that plot is secondary to character. Well, I must know what happens to these people. So I guess that means point taken
What can I say that I haven't already said about this series the Last Marines, book 5 is just as good as the previous four books and I hope it continues with the rest of the series. Ian
