The dynasty of Aileana Montgomerie possesses priceless talents for healing and foresight, but each honour is accompanied by a curse. She worries if she belongs in a magical family because she lacks the skills of the Scottish Ancients despite being descended from the people of the mythical isles. All Aileana really wants is a goal. What use are her bow and arrow if she is unable to defend her clan? The next war leader of his clan is to be Brodie MacDougall. As long as his brother, the future laird, doesn't anticipate him to draw his sword and charge into war, the title is a privilege. He must spend his days alone due to his ongoing pain and anxiety. Can he stay one step ahead of his dishonest sibling thanks to his strategic abilities? Brodie fulfils his heart's dream thanks to a miraculous Mortar & Pestle. There's a catch, though. His brother's council membership is no longer contingent on his health... but with Aileana's might. Will their love lead to an alliance or lead to bloodshed given the rumblings of discord within their clans?
The book can be read as a stand alone. I love the development of the characters. They gradually grow into personalities of their own terms rather than what people expect from them. The pace of the story is interesting. It's thrilling. I quite enjoyed this sweet romance dipped in little bit magic.

This was a fun and interesting read. It's part of a collaboration but can be read as a standalone. The characters were great, and I loved watching them grow into who they wanted to be, not what was expected of them.

I received an ARC from netgalley in exchange of an honest review:

I loved this book more than I thought I would. Aileana was such a strong woman, I loved her tenacity and her strength, she was herself and that was the best she could be. She was special but she just couldn't see it. He made her see and feel that. Brodie had been bullied so much because of his illnesses but he continued being positive and didn't let people bring him down. She helped him overcome his problems and made him see that he was fantastic the way he was. They really did belong together and they fought for each other, they were there for each other, no matter what

I love many things about this book, but most of all, I love the ease with which the author pulled me into the story. Once I started, I couldn't stop! This is another delightful addition to The Hundred world created by the author, yet also tied into another multi-author series featuring a mortar and pestle.

I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful world and characters created by Jean M. Grant.

Author Grant is one of the precious few historical fictional writers that I will gobble up happily, and she wrote this one as a continuation of sorts of her Hundred Trilogy. It's a fantastic introduction to those that have never met the Montgomerie Clan in medieval Scotland, and she starts this female skewered anthology series in Women's History Month. A coincidence? I hope not!

Author Grant is thorough in her knowledge of the time and the language. It's not difficult to understand the dialogue, but some of the Scottish words I had to look up. The names of the characters were very appropriate for the area and the period. Aileana was a young woman you just wanted to be best friends with. What a terrific character caught in a time period not kind to women. But she's got a strong will and spoke her mind.

"She abandoned her satchel and reached for the laces on her bodice. His throat closed. “Er, I dinna suggest ye remove yer clothes! Christ, Lanie. ’Tis not warm enough, nor is it proper to be prancing in yer shift.”“I prance?” She smirked, pausing. Oh, her smile was glorious. Delight danced in soft blue eyes, and a laugh teased the corners of her lips. “Like a fairy, aye.”“Och, don’t get het up, Brodie,” she said, dropping from her formal language— the proper pronunciation of a noble, he reminded himself— to match his everyday vernacular. She nosed her booted foot out more and raised the skirt, lifting the hem… He turned away, but not before he glimpsed—“ Trews? Ye wear a man’s pants beneath yer gown?”“Aye! Why should only men be comfortable ? I despise gowns. For formality, I wear them."

You could imagine Aileana today fighting for abortion rights or climate change. Speaking at a women's conference. Writing a paper on female children's rights in poor nations for her dissertation. I enjoyed imagining her trying to deal with the red tape of today (misogyny, racism, classism) while reading how she dealt with the red tape of her time in the story. Brodie was a kind man who would undoubtedly be diagnosed with severe asthma today, but back then it was "vapors." Their secret courtship was lovely and the politics they maneuvered around was really no different than what happens today. Brodie was stronger with Aileana in every way.

"God, ye’ve given me this remarkable woman . Now is not the time to slay me. Guide her hand and I will see everything right in this clan. I will do all in my power to find peace."

I loved the bits of magic and mystery peppered throughout the story. While this is a historical fiction story, it has so many myths tied closely to Scottish tales, and it made it all devastating and interesting. The villain's point of view was scary and for me, when I got to the end, I thought the tone was...weird when it came to him? There are things he clearly did, and things that are insinuated he did, and I didn't feel the outrage from the characters that I felt. But he is "royalty" and perhaps it just happens "off screen?" Or maybe I'm just used to the swift hand of social media justice.

My favorite part of the book is when a prophecy comes to path and everything becomes clearer:

"In your presence, the answer is shown. Stay close to her, for her heart’s desire is known. What you seek, you will reap. You are the golden prize. Be her sun."

Love and fate, always intertwined. So this is a deeply romantic book after all! Just in time for Women's History Month, Author Grant reminds us readers that even in Medieval times, women can have strong voices and have strong minds to be the people they not only want to be in life, but NEED to be...while teaching the next generation of women along the way.

It Just Makes Me Sad…

Genre romance has always been about tropes, but for decades, authors have been more subtle about them. Within the last few years, contemporary romance, in particular, has become ALL about the tropes, with authors trumpeting them not only in book blurbs but as subtitles. This is now just creeping into historical romance, and as a decades-long lover of historical romance, I weep when I see a subtitle like this one. Scottish medieval romance is more often than not an enemies-to-lovers story—with all the inter-clan warfare and posturing. So, why must it be said flashing like a billboard in the subtitle, as happens so often with most contemporary romances? Let historical romance BE historical romance!

For a story that is supposed to take place 700 years ago, the author uses concepts and terms that would have been foreign to medieval Scots. The heroine has far too modern sensibilities. Humans progress slowly in their ideas and ideals, and a young woman back in the day would have been very unlikely to think that she didn't need a man to protect her. It was rough and brutal times, and women actually did, going from the protection of their fathers and brothers to their husbands. Without real protection—even if she had skill with a bow and arrow as this heroine had—she would be unlikely to survive long wholly intact, whether body, mind, or spirit.

I very nearly slapped my forehead when I saw the heroine actually refer to the hero as grumpy! Was grumpy even a concept in medieval Scotland? I somehow think not. However, it is a prevalent trope in contemporary romance these days. But I don’t think it has a place in historical fiction. Oy vey!

I also thought some of the author's other word choices were overwrought. It's like she was determined not to use simple nouns and verbs if she could find a flashier or more unusual word. That made the book feel, at times, overblown and random, the words missing the mark because words do have shades of meaning.

As a nurse, I found it fascinating to see how asthma was seen back in the day, though I do not know if this author portrayed it accurately. It also seems odd that the hero would become his brother's war chieftain once their father passed. Wouldn't that rule, for the safety and security of the clan, pass to a braw warrior—which the hero was not because of his asthma—not just a family relation figurehead? It made little sense. As you can tell, this story disappointed me on several levels.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author, Jean M. Grant for an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.

This book was so, so sweet. It was a short, easy to read romance with a bit of an underlying fantasy plot. Aileana ‘Lanie’, our FMC, hails from a bloodline that passes powers through the matriarchal line. However, she does not believe she possesses any of these extra abilities. Instead she grounds herself in her fortitude and determination. She is a strong willed, assured woman who is determined to prove that a woman holds more value than most believe there to be.

Brodie, is our MMC. He is the son of the laird of his clan and is destined to become the war chief. However, he is overcome by chronic illness and struggles to believe in his capabilities and himself. I really enjoyed reading this character’s POV. It evoked some heart rending emotions and you couldn’t help but feel for him.

There are some trials and tribulations the two face in attempting to find peace between their two clans. There is an additional POV of a character whose intentions are discovered throughout the book - in order not to spoil anything, that is all I will say on that.

Overall, I found this book to be a sweet and enjoyable easy to read romance between two very interesting and endearing characters. The overarching setting was well written and clearly well researched. I honestly would have enjoyed if the book was longer with more detail flushed out and hearing more about their lives. Definitely recommend if you are looking for a sweet, quick romance with an interesting sub plot!

Escape to a distant land where bloodlines, clans, and magic entwine. I was gleeful when I heard Jean M. Grant has penned a new story. I always enjoy her books because they’re so immersive, it’s like traveling back to medieval Scotland. This book reads like a breath of fresh air. A woman who’s an exceptional archer and a hero whose health makes him appear weak. An unassuming pair whose strength lies with their bonding.

What makes Seeker an unforgettable read are the characters. Aileana and Brodie are not your average hero and heroine. In fact, they are original in their roles which only makes me love them more. They both have weaknesses and family pressures weighing them down. But once the mortar and pestle make an appearance, their purpose comes into focus. Trust me, you’ll fall for sweet Brodie.

The world-building and descriptive narration are brilliant, allowing the reader to dive into the story. The world-building is both historically accurate and filled with magic. Every scene is described beautifully right down to the last detail. The emotions conveyed by each POV is well-drawn and makes the reading experience that much more enjoyable.

If you’re looking for a medieval fantasy romance you won’t soon forget, pick up this book. Let the magic of love surround you. I strongly recommend this book to all readers.

Jean M Grant’s Seeker took me to medieval times when conflict is just as likely to be solved by the sword as by treaty. I fell into her world on page one with the elaborate scenery and accurate terminology.

Any book with detailed herbology automatically hooks my attention but what pulled me into the book was Brodie. Girly sigh. He reminds me of Collin from the Secret Garden. Clever, educated, brave, but sick with a mystery ailment, Brodie was shielded by the machismo training of his time. He’s a wood carver, scholar, and strategist with the manners of a knight. SWOON! These sparkling attributes are made glaringly apparent by the comparison to his brother, Keir. Keir is the type of villain I love to hate. A womanizer who rides the coattails of his father’s legacy, Keir may be handsome on the outside but ugly on the inside—like Hans from Frozen.

Overall, I highly recommend Seeker to those who love medieval romance, fairy tales, and swoon-worthy scholar heroes.

I always enjoy Jean Grant's Celtic tales. They're well-researched and have interesting storylines and characters. In Seeker, part of the series Mortar and Pestle, Grant takes supporting characters from one of her own series and gives them their own exciting tale. Aileana is the main female character, a young girl becoming a woman, who find love in an unexpected person while uncovering the perfidy of a rival clan's heir to the throne. The romance is intelligent and tender, with two people overcoming misunderstanding and prejudice to truly love and respect each other. And Aileana is feisty and smart, a mistress of the bow, who puts her special talents to use to find her own identity amongst the clans. Her vis a vis Brody is an interesting male lead, overcoming physical disability with Aileana's help, while winning her love and the respect of the clans with his intelligence and integrity.

I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed it.
I have mixed feelings about the book. It is a well-written and smooth story. However, an enemy to lover story? That part wasn't visible to me. Maybe they weren't friends in the beginning, but I never had the feeling they hated or resented each other.
I don't particularly like the trope of a powerful cruel character who mistreated the main characters and they're helpless about it. I nearly stopped reading a few times, but in the end I'm glad that I carried on.
The end didn't work for me at all. It felt rushed, and a lot of questions are still unanswered, which would be fine if the story would continue, but that's not the case. It kind of ruined the book for me.

All in all, it was a good book that could have been a lot better if the end would have been done differently.

This delightful novella is a sample of Jean Grant’s pleasing writing and I enjoyed it immensely. In this prequel to The Hundred Trilogy, this author teases the reader with a strong female lead, intelligent & quietly sexy romantic interest and the requisite malevolent challenger, all striving for survival in the highlands of medieval Scotland. I loved her use of a rarely employed (not your standard issue physical challenge) human frailty and the introduction of an unusual magical power. It has been several years since I read book 3 of her trilogy and although a quick read, I felt throughout that her writing has sharpened. I knew right away that I would miss the characters when the novella ended and I was correct. This story sets the tone and style and has inspired me to re-read the trilogy!

I received the book as an ARC and am giving my personal and honest opinion.
This is the first book I have read by the author and I can say that I adore the story. After reading it, it has become one of my favorites of the year. And its author immediately entered my top list of favorite authors. The world that Jean M. Grant has built is wonderful, and her characters are wonderful and multi-layered. Brodie and Aileana became my favorites. I love how Aileana is so strong and feisty, Brodie is funny and driven.
The story was very fascinating and captivating. I wasn't just reading, I was experiencing all the adventures along with the characters.
For me, the book was the wonderful first introduction to the author and her works. A fascinating, powerful and unique story that I recommend to anyone looking for a breath of fresh air in the book world.

I’ve read contemporary women’s fiction by this author and know she can write a powerful story. This is the first historical reading from her though now I’m going to have to read her others in the genre. It’s also paranormal with a touch of magic.
Seeker is the second book in the mortar and pestle series by various authors, and I’m hooked so far.
One of my favorite things is learning about herbs and healing. I’m also fascinated with archery. The main character, Aileana, is a woman who doesn’t think she has any special gifts like the rest of her family.
Brodie is the male lead and has physical ailments which cause self-doubt.
The two work together, and both come to realize they really are special. Fans of Outlander will enjoy Ms. Grant’s work.

I've read several books by Jean M. Grant, but I have to say that this is probably my favorite so far. I really enjoyed how the author built up the world with mystery, intrigue, and feuds between clans. And I have to admit to how much I loved Brodie in this story. He was tall, handsome, and brooding, but in the most charming way.

Aileana was also a fun character. She'd prefer a tunic and trousers to a dress any day. And heaven forbid she let a man tell her what to do.

The character arcs and love story were amazing in Seeker, and I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves Scottish historical romances with a bit of magic weaved in.

I love the idea of a collaborative writer collection and the premise behind this one is fascinating. Seeker is the second stand alone story in the collection. Set in the wilds of Historic Scotland it has a heroine as brave and wild as the setting. I love her strength and willingness to be different and stand out.
The storyline has a bit of everything, action, tournaments and deceptions. There’s a battle of wills and morals happening whilst the goals vary, some yearn for power while others are finding their true selves.
I really enjoyed reading this book and I am excited to see where the Mortar and Pestle will take me next.

What a cute read! While this book was not as polished as some, it was very enjoyable. The main characters, Lannie and Brodie, are very charming and easy to root for. The author clearly has a love for the Highlands and it shows in the little details such as the way the characters speak and the symbols associated with the clans. If you want a quick, pleasant read, I recommend picking this one up. I wish it was longer so the author could go into more detail in some areas, but overall, a good, fast-paced story with endearing characters! Content warnings for attempted sexual coercion, though nothing is particularly graphic or explicit.

I love how Aileana’s matriarchal line all have a connection to one of the elements and is in possession of a magic mortar and pestle. Brodie is definite hero material. He is kind-hearted, smart and a little broody, but suffers from an unknown ailment. He shines in comparison to his very unlikeable brother! Their love grows throughout the story, but they must be strong together to thwart those who wish to tear them apart.

The author did a great job of world building in this novella set in the Highlands. She incorporated mystery, clan scheming and romance into this heartwarming story. The characters develop at their own pace and sometimes in ways I was not expecting.
Definitely recommend to those who love stories set in the Highlands of Scotland and like a wee bit of magic!

I received an arc of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed reading this book as I got to know the main characters Aileana Montgomerie and Brodie MacDougall. As they get to know each other, they started to grow into themselves while trying to defend their clans.

The story was fast paced and an easy plot to follow. I do wish there was a little bit more world building or more history on the mortar & pestle. But that could have been done intentionally since this is a standalone in a collaboration of books. With that, I hope to read the other standalone books in the collaboration!

It was a fun quick read! The book takes place in Scotland, one of my favorite settings for a book. Its a story of romance, deceit and traditions. Once I started reading I couldn’t put the book down. The author has done her research of the time period to be able to use the language and dress of the time.

It’s a story Aileana Montgomerie and Brodie MacDougall. Aileana comes from a long family line of people who have gifts? Does Aileana have a gift? Aileana also stands up for women! Brodie has an affliction that’s keeps him confined to his room. Can he overcome that? Will he take his rightful place in his family?

While part of the mystical Mortar and Pestle series, this book is also a sequel to Jean's Hundred trilogy. That being said, this book can easily be read as a standalone. It follows the Lady Aileana in her journey of self-discovery and love. When a seemingly ordinary object foretells the connection between two young souls, they race against time to determine if the connection between them is fated to be something great or something horrible. When foul play is suspected between the clans, the truth reveals itself. Spectacularly written, this is a novel of strength, friendship, and the power of love. A truly amazing read!

A mysterious ancient mortar & pestle that time-travels through centuries in a 7 book series by 7 proven authors? Brilliant premise! Jean Grant and her fictional Female archer both hit the target in 14th century Scotland in book two of the series. SEEKER is a well-researched "mash" of castle culture, intrigue, and romance--all dependant on the magic of the mortar & pestle. I love a novel that transports me to a colorful world that informs and entertains and Grant never disappoints in this genre lane!

I enjoyed this quick read. The author does a nice job of depicting the rivalry among the Scottish clans against a backdrop of romance and a fiery leading lady. I enjoy reading medieval literature which provides a glimpse of what life was like at that time. I admit I raised my eyebrows a few times when events in the story portrayed the roles and expectations for women back then. I was glad to see our leading lady trying to break the rules. This is a quick read and part of the multi author Mortar and Pestle series. The twist of this series is the magical mortar and pestle that seems to have its own agenda.

Lanie comes from a line of gifted people, but doesn't know if she has any abilities other than a desire for a purpose.

Brodie is destined to be the war chieftan of his clan, but he has several health issues..

Lanie and Brodie are brought together to have an arranged marriage suggested, but Brodie doesn't think he's good enough for her. Can Lanie convince him they make a good team?

I absolutely loved Aileana and Brodie's story. It captures your attention right from the beginning! Aileana is not your every day young woman, more of a tomboy you loves archery and hunting. She feels she is the only one in her family that wasn't blessed with a magical gift so she feels like an outsider. Brodie is not your typical highlander. We learn right from the beginning that he suffers from what today we see as severe asthma. So he uses his mind and not his brawn.
There is magic, deception, family, honor, and evil in this story. I can be read as a stand alone book with a HEA!

A well written, engaging romantic, magical adventure. I love the author's writing style and became totally immersed in the characters and the Scottish Highlands setting. I was literally cheering for Aileana and Brodie to overcome the obstacles in their way. Definitely a page turner story and one I do highly recommend. Seeker is the second book in the multi-author mortar and pestle series. The premise being a magical Mortar and Pestle that shows believers the paths to happily-ever-after. I'm hooked and am looking forward to reading the next adventure!

Seeker by Jean M. Grant

I could not put this book down! The main character, Alileanna MacGregor is a strong willed young lady. She does not want to matched to anyone her parents choose for her. She wants to be happy and free. She wants to wear trousers, and run barefoot through the glen as she hunts for her dinner.
Brodie MacDougal the son, of Laird MacDougal is quite the opposite of Alileanna. He is quiet and reserved. He fancies Alileanna and her outlook on life. The two find something in the other to make them one.
