About the author

James Herriot is the pen name of James Alfred Wight, OBE, FRCVS also known as Alf Wight, an English veterinary surgeon and writer. Wight is best known for his semi-autobiographical stories, often referred to collectively as All Creatures Great and Small, a title used in some editions and in film and television adaptations.

In 1939, at the age of 23, he qualified as a veterinary surgeon with Glasgow Veterinary College. In January 1940, he took a brief job at a veterinary practice in Sunderland, but moved in July to work in a rural practice based in the town of Thirsk, Yorkshire, close to the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, where he was to remain for the rest of his life. The original practice is now a museum, "The World of James Herriot".

Wight intended for years to write a book, but with most of his time consumed by veterinary practice and family, his writing ambition went nowhere. Challenged by his wife, in 1966 (at the age of 50), he began writing. In 1969 Wight wrote If Only They Could Talk, the first of the now-famous series based on his life working as a vet and his training in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. Owing in part to professional etiquette which at that time frowned on veterinary surgeons and other professionals from advertising their services, he took a pen name, choosing "James Herriot". If Only They Could Talk was published in the United Kingdom in 1970 by Michael Joseph Ltd, but sales were slow until Thomas McCormack, of St. Martin's Press in New York City, received a copy and arranged to have the first two books published as a single volume in the United States. The resulting book, titled All Creatures Great and Small, was an overnight success, spawning numerous sequels, movies, and a successful television adaptation.

In his books, Wight calls the town where he lives and works Darrowby, which he based largely on the towns of Thirsk and Sowerby. He also renamed Donald Sinclair and his brother Brian Sinclair as Siegfried and Tristan Farnon, respectively. Wight's books are only partially autobiographical. Many of the stories are only loosely based on real events or people, and thus can be considered primarily fiction.

The Herriot books are often described as "animal stories" (Wight himself was known to refer to them as his "little cat-and-dog stories"), and given that they are about the life of a country veterinarian, animals certainly play a significant role in most of the stories. Yet animals play a lesser, sometimes even a negligible role in many of Wight's tales: the overall theme of his stories is Yorkshire country life, with its people and their animals primary elements that provide its distinct character. Further, it is Wight's shrewd observations of persons, animals, and their close inter-relationship, which give his writing much of its savour. Wight was just as interested in their owners as he was in his patients, and his writing is, at root, an amiable but keen comment on the human condition. The Yorkshire animals provide the element of pain and drama; the role of their owners is to feel and express joy, sadness, sometimes triumph. The animal characters also prevent Wight's stories from becoming twee or melodramatic — animals, unlike some humans, do not pretend to be ailing, nor have they imaginary complaints and needless fears. Their ill-health is real, not the result of flaws in their character which they avoid mending. In an age of social uncertainties, when there seem to be no remedies for anything, Wight's stories of resolute grappling with mysterious bacterial foes or severe injuries have an almost heroic quality, giving the reader a sense of assurance, even hope. Best of all, James Herriot has an abundant humour about himself and his difficulties. He never feels superior to any living thing, and is ever eager to learn — about animal doctoring, and about his fellow human creature.

Comfort reading that feeds my nostalgia for the England of bygone times. I loved the TV series back in the 1980s and the books fill in the details and place me right back in the Yorkshire Dales.

I haven't read James Herriot since I was a child, but I have fond memories of his compassion for animals. As I have an impending visit to Yorkshire and the Dales, I was delighted to find this old collection of his at a thrift store. I really wanted to get an intimate view of the people and the place, and wow, this did that. Herriot's stories are a joy. Cozy, touching, and full of humanity. Sometimes that humanity is frustrating and selfish, other times sad (this book did make me cry a couple times), and also laugh out loud funny.

This particular edition was especially wonderful because it included far more than his stories. This dictionary-sized hardcover has illustrations throughout, and marginalia that provides insights on life in the Dales during the Victorian era up though the '50s. This includes factoids on animals, peat harvesting, and farm and veterinary equipment, and even some traditional recipes. There are also color photo sections sporadically throughout the book that discuss things like Yorkshire castles, pubs, and the native flora and fauna. As a research geek, this thrilled me. I was left with a comprehensive overview of the region and life the way it used to be.

If you're of this same mindset, it's well worth seeking out this particular edition. I intend to keep it on my shelf as a reference book for my writing.

Reading this makes me want to return to Yorkshire for a visit. I’m also eager to read more books by James Herriot. This edition is beautifully illustrated with drawings and photos. I may even try some of the recipes.

I LOVED this book - I wasn't able to suppress my laughter at times... and 'that's' saying something! I've also read other collections of his, but would recommend this one since the stories (though a partial collection) are in chronological order so you keep track of persons etc. I adore his retelling of courtship blunders- READ IT!!

These are vet stories - so get ready for all sorts of fun!

This is a book to cherish if one is a Herriot fan. It's a large book, full of his and his readers favorite stories, beautiful photographs, and delightful drawings. I read his first book almost 45 years ago and just reread it and loved it all over again. I was blessed to be able to visit beautiful Yorkshire and his home/practice/museum in Thirsk, which I highly recommend (The World of James Herriot). Through books like this, James Alfred Wight (Herriot) is still able to make us laugh and cry. He will forever be one of my favorite authors.

This is the second time reading this lovely book. James Herriot is one of my favorite authors and this book is the best of them all. As well as the stories, I loved the little bits of English life in the margins: recipes, old newspapers of the times, breeds of livestock, pieces of machinery, methods of farming, veterinary, or housekeeping. A great taste of Herriot's work as well as a taste of life at the time.

Some have a comfort food or a comfort drink, something you turn to on a day that you need something to make you feel better about life. This is a comfort read. It will make you smile, chuckle and occasionally laugh out loud, but mainly it will just relax you with stories from the life of the most famous veterinary surgeon in the world. If you love animals, this book is for you. Highly recommended.

James Herriot stories are both relaxing and wryly hilarious. One moment centers upon a lovely descriptive passage filled with insights about the land or people or the human condition or animals and then there will be in a twinkle an episode of some kind that ranges from a grin to belly laugh. A seemingly effortless handiwork of storytelling.

For those unfamiliar with Herriot’s tales of being a country vet, this is a grand introduction since it is fairly chronological of his career, plus it has bonus inserts of historical trivia and color plates of the Yorkshire area.

And for those who are Herriot fans, this is delightful reread of the best of his stories. All the best from one of the best. A definite recommendation for family readings.

I wasn't sure if I should have rated this 5 stars because I had read a lot of the stories from "All Creatures Great and Small" and "The Lord God Made Them All," so I ended up skipping two huge parts. There were some stories that I hadn't read before, and those were amusing and fun as always :)
Also, AMAZING RECIPES!!! I think this book is getting the 5 from me because the recipes were an awesome and delicious bonus!

An edition for book collectors! This volume contains Herriot's favorite stories from all the "All Things.." books, and has hundreds of photographs of the area as well as hand drawn illustrations. In the margins are a multitude of little snippets of educational support about English farm life in yesteryear, breeds of animals, recipes, etc. It's just beautiful.

I have such a fond spot in my heart for James Herriot, I'll admit it. His love for his life is inspiring. He loves taking care of these animals, he loves the place he lives and he loves his family, especially his beloved wife Helen, and it shines through in these semi-autobiographical memoirs of his life as a country vet in England Yorkshire area, specifically, the Dales.

The author of All Creatures Great and Small, and several other books chronicling his adventures with Seigfried and Tristan, puts together some of his favorite stories in this volume, The Best of James Herriot, some of which come from each of his books.

I am a fairly jaded reader, but some of these entries make me laugh out loud! And some make me tear up, as when he has to put an old man's companion, his old dog, down.

This volume has some nice side notes and illustrations about equipment and breeds of animals that Herriot worked with. It also has beautiful photos of his country. This was a very fun and enjoyable read. OK...it is sappy, but the good kind of sappy. And I enjoyed the heck out of it.

This may be the best book I've read this year. For an Anglophile such as myself, this book is an immersion into the world of the Yorkshire Dales, circa 1940s. Herriot does not sugar coat veterinary work - animals are badly injured, die, give birth and survive and James Herriot chronicles all of it. He does not dumb down the medical terminology either. His writing is warm and funny, but also gives life to the people and animals that appear in his books.

This is a collection of stories from his other books and contains interludes of color photos of Yorkshire life and is bookended by hand-drawn illustrations of animals, tools, even recipes in the margins of the main text. Despite being an altogether heavy book (it's a large hardcover with nearly 500 pages!) I enjoyed reading this before bed; the chapters almost always end on an uplifting note.

I really wanted to give this book 4 stars, as it was a wonderful collection of James Herriot's stories, made even better by all the fabulous photos and snippets of information concerning the areas and times the author is talking about. I ended up with about 4 pages of recipes, and I've even made two of them already. Fascinating. Unfortunately, I find it really difficult to read - or watch for that matter - about situations where people are humiliated, and there are a number of them in this book, and that is why it's got 3 stars and not 4.
However, I would highly recommend this book for anyone who loved the tv show or remembers reading the novels years ago. I really appreciate my lovely Doctor's Surgery which also allows the odd book to be borrowed - wonderful people. :)

It has been years since I've read James Herriot's books, but this one brought it all back to me. I giggled through much of it, and that was a delight. I loved looking through through the pictures, transporting me back to those days in the dales. I've never been there, and I'm sure it has changed radically anyway, so it was a treat. Well written, and the stories weave beautifully into each other. How does he do it?!

A very pleasant and humorous work by an English veterinarian. His experiences concerning the care and treatment of farm animals and dogs is occasionally graphic, but that makes it endearing because it evinces a love for his work. This is a compendium of his writings. A recommended read.

I have a soft spot in my heart for James Herriot. My late Dad and I watched the original PBS series together. We loved it. This book belonged to my Dad. So I went into it quite biased. It did not disappoint. There are wonderful illustrations and beautiful photographs of Yorkshire as a bonus.

I was looking my mom's and father's books and I found The Best of James Herriot: The Favorite Stories of One of the Most Beloved Writers of Our Time so I decided to see how far the stories were similar because of the PBS show. In the last chapter it was shown that Siegfried had two children, Alan and Janet, both never shown in the series. Mrs. Hall was briefly mentioned in the book but a lot in the series. Tricki Woo was Mrs. Pumphrey's dog, but Cedrik was not her dog. James was awol during his son's birth but nobody knew. They made up some of the stories in the series such as the boy that harassed James, his dog didn't make it and he was a troubled youth. It's easy to see that many of the adventures are changed. But I must say this, I was very entertained by the book.

One of the loveliest, most endearing books I have ever read. The hardcover is gorgeous and is filled with beautiful, full-color illustrations and fun recipes to try. Each story was heartwarming in a different and unexpected way. I love this book so much and know it must be shared. What a splendid collection of animals! Some of those dog stories had me in tears ~ laughing, at times, and crying. So beautifully written. Such a legacy James Herriot has created and left for us to enjoy so many years later.

CONTENT laungage, a few coments about pretty girls in pants/slightly more revealing cloths (: , drukeness, potentially disgusting/grose medical description,

MESSAGES um.. well... sneaking away when you're not supossed to can make you feel guilty, you don't know the good your actions could do, and you should be kind to animals.

WRITING light and conversational for the most part.

CONCLUSION It was a fun book, and to many highly entertaining. (:
