It doesn't take long for Cody Elliot to realize that his new high school is a little different. The other students are supernaturally strong, don't like the sunlight, and are always placingorders at the local blood bank. When his new friend shows him his fangs, Cody doesn't need any more clues-these kids are vampires As Cody struggles to fit into this secretive community, he disruptscenturies of human-vampire segregation, with some serious-and some seriously funny--consequences. In sharp, humorous, and insightful prose, Douglas Rees creates a world of vampireswhere the real issue for humans is not the fear of being bitten, but the need to get along. I was born on October 19th, 1947 in the hospital at March Air Force Base just outside Riverside, California. My father, Norman, was a career sergeant who'd served as an aircraft mechanic and infantryman in the Philippines campaign early in the war and was taken prisoner on Bataan. My mother, Agnes, was a nurse at the hospital where he was sent to recuperate after the war was over.

Until I was fifteen, I lived on or near a number of Air Force bases in this country and in Germany. My sister, Patricia, was born in 1950 at Travis AFB.

Until I was six, I wanted to be a fireman. Between six and twelve, I wanted to be a paleontologist. When I was twelve, I decided I wanted to be a writer. I still haven't outgrown that.

I made some occasional stabs at writing and submitting manuscripts in my twenties and thirties. When I turned forty-seven, I decided to start writing things more regularly. I've been doing so ever since.

This is a thoroughly charming YA book with a fabulous world and cast of characters. Cody and his peers are very much teenagers and deal with the supernatural not as heroes but as high school students. There are only a few places in the book where I cringe in sympathetic embarrassment, and the triumphant ending is delightful.

( Vampire High by Douglas Rees )

I read this book a few years ago by now, and have not reread it. Hence why I'm going to do a short review because my memory is a little spotty. Just about the details however, I remember the overall story well enough and I remember my feelings whilst reading this book even better. The reason I rated this book five whole stars all those years back was because I simply loved this book. The characters were lively, detailed and lovable! What's more the story was excellent and the dialogue had me in stitches! That is what I remember the most, this book had me cracking up every few pages. That is why it is such a great book to read.

Admittedly I read the first and second books years apart and I wasn't as charmed nor as humored with the second book as I was with the first and I fear its because instead of being a time thing, its an age thing. Perhaps my being older changed my view of Cody and his world, perhaps this is a book that only suits younger readers but I sure as heck hope not. That's why I'm afraid to reread, I'd be hard up to find the second time reading this great book might end up being like reading the second which I didn't find as funny or as great as the first.

Who knows, maybe its age, maybe its just the second book but the first I found funny, memorable and great. It was an awesome time reading the story and going along with Cody on his journey. I loved the romance between Cody and Ileana, I loved the friendship between Cody and Justin, I despised Gregor, I freaking loved the ending where every vampire sees the potential of the fairer and smaller vampire who need more blood! I mean you have to admit the book overall is pretty great right?! I loved Dracula even more and I loved Cody's journey and his struggles. For a fictional book, I found them realistic cause let's face it, every new kid on the block struggles to find their place in the world without compromising who they are, right?

In any case, reading this book made me happy and I truly loved every aspect of it. It was just right in every way for a feel good ending and overall read. So I recommend this book to every young teen and young adult even who loves vampires and wants a different spin on them. Because thinking back on the time I read this book, I only find happy, humorous and satisfied memories.

( Update 2019 )

After many years, I have finally reread this wonderful classic from my youth. It was as I thought it would be, definitely not as great as the first time, but then again that's the way it is with any book, or film even. I mean, after all, once you've read and or seen it, you've read and or seen it. The wonders of first discovery can never be recaptured. Unless, you know, you find yourself stricken with complete and total amnesia. In any case, despite it not being as wonderful as the first time, and while at times I wasn't as 'involved' as I should have been, it really was great rereading this book.

It was old, familiar, like catching up with a friend. I might not have laughed as well as I had when I'd first read it, but like I said, this is my second time reading it. Not the first. Instead of wonderful and downright hilarious discoveries, this time around it felt like catching up with an old and very dear friend. I fell right into it. And I don't just mean the spacing and pace make this an easy and somewhat light read. I mean like, two peas in a pod I fell right back into it. No! Like a puzzle piece falling into place. That's it! And honestly, it was great. That feeling.

And it really is such an easy book to read. And simply a great story. And if you're reading it for the first time around, it's a barrel of laughs, I tell you! And if not, then there's something wrong with YOU. It's a really great high school story, and a new spin on a very old genre. The characters are great, and the pace is steady. I loved every minute of it. There wasn't one chapter or set of pages where I felt or thought 'come on already!' That being said, rereading this book now, older and wiser, I feel like there are some weird sentences and possible mistakes?

But hey, I'm not a writer nor an English major so I could totally be wrong. But that's what I thought, and it felt weird. Like, 'how did I miss this the first time around?' But like I said, I was younger. And even older now, it's still great. Like it's a young adult book that can reach across time and still interest my aging heart lol I really, really recommend this book to any young person who likes books about vampires. It's not just about vampires. In a way it's a vampire book that has it's vampires take a whole backseat.

Instead Mr. Rees injects into the pages of this book stuff like high school, getting into it and finding your feet, growing up in general, social struggles which covers bullies, rivals, friendship and romantic relationships, moving from one place to another and how that affects you and just... Finding your place in the world. Or, in this case, high school. And really, I feel like that isn't even half of it. Oh, and Cody's family is downright a blast. Really cozy. Really refreshing and, despite everything, really normal. Again, read this book! You'll find an amazing world waiting for you.

Oh, and this time around I thought it was kinda weird how good ol' Vlad just took to Cody. Like... It was weird. Or maybe it wasn't. Man, this dual perspective, younger me versus older me, is downright... Well... Weird!

Vampire High is about a boy named Cody Elliot who does bad in school. His parents decide to transfer him to a different school. His parents tried to get him into Vlad Dracul, a school for students with high grades. Cody gets into this school, and gets good grades just because he joins an extracurricular activity. He finds out that he is in a school for vampires and also finds out why he has been getting good grades (because vampires can’t join sports that involve water, believing that they would turn into some sort of seal-like animal).
This book in some ways is funny and weird. Weird being because he is in a school of vampires and to find out that you’re surrounded by a bunch of vampires would need some getting used to. The book is funny because Cody comes home with a report card, failing all of his classes and is proud of it. He even manages to fail homeroom and gym. The evidence is in the text. Anyone who reads the first few pages of this book will be cracking up.

I came across this book in a local library while i was looking around for the other Glass Houses books. Did not think i was going to enjoy it, but the fact that people where scared about the 'evils' of vampire books in my highschool got my engines revving to read anything with the mere mention of vampires, in the title or not.

I actually really enjoyed this book and it set me to reading the original Dracula and encouraged me to start reading some of the older vampire based novels out there. Definitely (one of) my gateway books into the world of the supernatural~ Definitely a read I would recommend for YA or someone looking for a bit of vampire semi-satire ~

Cody's family moved from CA to New Sodom MA and he hates it here. He got all Fs on his report card (even homeroom) and hopes they will go back. Instead, his parents send him to Vlad Dracul High. Where, as it turns out, the school is full of vampires )or Jenti as they prefer). They keep a few non=vamps such as Cody (or Gadje) in order for them to be on the water polo team to keep the schools accrediation. Those who do, get a free ride. Only Cody finds that he wants to earn his grades after all. And makes some very different friends in the process. This was a very fun read.

"Vampire High" by Douglas Rees is a young adult novel that tells the story of a high school where vampires attend classes alongside human students. The main character, Cody, is a transfer student who quickly realizes that things at his new school are not quite what they seem. As he navigates his way through the challenges and dangers of this unique school, Cody learns about the complexities of vampire society and the unique challenges faced by those who live between two worlds.

The book is well-written and fast-paced, with well-developed characters and a captivating storyline. The world of Vampire High is richly imagined, with its own unique set of rules and traditions, and the interactions between the human and vampire characters are well executed. Rees's writing style is engaging and easy to read, and the plot is both thrilling and thought-provoking.

One of the strengths of the book is the way it explores the complexities of relationships between vampires and humans and the challenges of balancing loyalty to one's own kind with the desire to live in the human world. Cody Elliot's goes to school at Massachusetts public high school. And Cody wants to go back to California so he puts his plan into action. But it ended up backfiring when his dad had another idea in mind to transfer him to a new high school. The school his dad transfer him to is called Vlad Dracula Magnet School, the school was one of the best school out there. The next day he and his dad went to the school to enroll him in the school. He was enrolled in the school now he was not too happy about it but he has not seen anything to his new school like that in any other school he had seen before. So now Cody now stuck in that school. His first day the class had already started he walk in and no one turns or even talk to him Cody tried to talk to others but no luke. So he tries again during lunch he was amazed at the variety of food. And the lunch room was more like a really fancy dining room. Then finally he gets a response and the girl he gave a note to talk to him then and said it is normal to give these notes to each other.A few days have passed and Cody made some friends there names are Justin and Ileana then is notice that there are some strange things how the students always place orders at the local blood bank, and how most of the students don't like the sun. Then Cody made the conclusion that the school were vampires. Then his friend shows him his fangs that were all the proof Cody needed. In my opinion, irate this book 8/10.

When Cody Elliot comes home with a report card replete with F's (even in homeroom), Dad decides a private school is in order. There are two choices: Our Lady of Perpetual Homework or Vlad Dracul Magnet School. Vlad Dracul really wants Cody so he can participate on the water polo team. If he will do that one thing, his future will be golden - all A's for no work, a college of his choice, a job later. What more could a gadje want? Things gets strange when a Canadian timber wolf named Charon is Cody's guide in the new school. It gets stranger when Cody realizes most of his classmates are jenti (vampires). Cody finally has an epiphany and decides to work for his grades. He even helps new best friend Justin discover his selkie heritage. Of course romance with a vampire princess can't hurt. I liked this book as it was fun and quirky but did have a message. I wish more of our kids could realize what Cody did. It also said a lot about friendship.

Svou výhradu sdělím moudrými slovy Thomase Sanderse: "Could be gayer..."
Ty poznámky, narážky a fórky byly geniální.
Sečteno podtrženo, dávám téhle teenage upíří volovince 4,4 hvězdičky a nazdar bazar.

I found this to be really fun; could recommend to 6th grade and up, for anyone looking for a light, entertaining read. Cody's family has moved from California to Massachusetts, and he is NOT happy about it. His father finds an elite school for him to attend, and all he has to do is to ... play water polo? Why is that? And why are so many of the kids sooo tall? And so serious? And so smart? And ... weird! Cody is definitely taken with the beautiful Ileana, and he does make a new friend in Justin, and he starts to hear enough information ... the beginnings of an explanation.
In spite of this book being full of characters who are, yes, vampires, it is sweet and light and enjoyable.

I've been slogging through a lot of murder mysteries and needed a lighter read.

Vampires at a high school? I think I've read this before, big sigh.

Wow, this story (unlike the others) impressed me and was funny and yeah there was a tear or two on my cheek when I was done and maybe a big smile on my face.

Thanks, Douglas Rees. Wondering if there are more books by this author? Hmm. Off to look.

This book is really easy to get into and the author did a very good job keeping it interesting. Not once was I bored or tired of it and I was constantly wondering what would happen next. Douglas Rees has a writing style perfect for my age group and makes the situations in this book very relatable. Many times I felt like I was in the book right along with the main character, Cody and experienced many emotions for him. I recommend this book to anyone that is interested in high school dramas.

Please! THEYRE MAKING ME READ THIS AT GUNPOINT AS TORTURE!

But really, this book is so unbelievably boring beyond words. This book is a literal snoozefest, and I want to die every time I read it. I finished it (somehow) and found out there was a sequel. Well, I can assure you I will NOT be reading that.

On the jays journal scale (1 being as bad as jays journal, 10 being harry potter levels of masterpiece): 3

I think that it was super good! It was very uplifting and it was hard for me to put down once I started reading it. It shows that anybody can have a change of heart over time, this particular situation being Cody not caring about school and flunking all his classes in the beginning, and by the end he was well known and cared deeply about his new school in the end.

I picked this book up because, even though it's for younger audiences, I was curious. I wasn't disappointed, either. Douglas Rees clearly did at least a little research into cryptozoology while peppering in various myths and creating a very unique fantasy horror society. I enjoyed the story enough that I didn't end up overanalyzing structure, which I tend to do.

This book is what brought me into the world of vampire based series. It enthralled me almost as much as Dracula with Lucy. I wrote the author an email in 2003, and he actually responded. He encouraged me to continue writing . It meant a lot and has become a dear memory of mine.

Určitě existují příběhy i o obyčejných upírech.

Nejsou to totiž lidé.

Jentiové a gadjové jistě vychází z originálu, takže překladatel kouzlit nemohl. Knize zanechal svěžet a vtipnost, i lehkost plynutí děje.

Nikdy nevíte, co udělá v příštík okamžiku a kolikrát vás naprosto omráčí.

Pojetí upírského světa vychází z klasických báchorek a místy vám mluva či hierarchie upírské společnosti připomene cikány.

When I grabbed this book I really wasn't expecting much more than a silly story aimed at kids; I'm so happy I was disappointed in that respect. This is a story with something for every age level; the premise is wacky enough to draw in the children, and yet there are just enough adult concepts wrapped up in the story to keep older readers intrigued.

Cody, unhappy with his family's move from warm sunny California to drab and cold New Sodom, Massachusetts, deliberately starts flunking out in school, hoping that it will convince his father to move them back home. Instead, it convinces his father that Cody just needs a harder school. It's either "Our Lady of Perpetual Homework" (and any survivor of a decent high-school should get a good laugh out of that one) or Vlad Dracul. Given the choice, Cody takes the latter.

At first things seem impossibly good. A school that seems more a functional piece of artwork than just simple buildings, excellent food at "dinner" (it's not called lunch), and no one's expecting him to do any work. He just has to show up at the water polo games and he'll be given a free pass both in school and in the rest of his life (college and job provided for). It should be every slacker's dream come true. But Cody quickly discovers that it doesn't sit right with him. He has too much self-respect (something which surprises him) to just be given everything; he wants to earn his grades. The curriculum at Vlad Dracul is anything but easy, though, and he has a lot of work to do to catch up.

Adding to the complications, the students at Vlad Dracul are for the most part, vampires. Or jenti, as they prefer to be called. Something Cody only learns about when he rescues one of his classmates from the school bully. It's enough to send his entire worldview off kilter.

Cody has to both adapt to this new world and learn to exist in it. He even manages to make a couple friends. But it truly is a different world from his and there are rules and traditions he doesn't know. It's a social minefield, but one that Cody has to find his way through, or risk expulsion from a place he's growing to like, not just despite its peculiarities, but because of them.

As other reviewers have stated, there is an amusing amount of satire going on here, along with a great deal of wonderfully witty dialogue. There's also social commentary to be found. Cody's position at Vlad Dracul is equivalent to that of an African American student's in an all white high school in the late 60s. He's an object of scorn, something to be ignored, snubbed, and sometimes, attacked. He has to work to make himself be seen at all, and then work harder to become a person in the eyes of his classmates and teachers.

There are a couple caveats for the older reader, here. Some things in regards to Cody's acceptance amongst the jenti do seem to come too fast and too easily, but it's not so jarring that it ruins the flow of the book or the suspension of disbelief. One other item of note is Cody's behavior itself, in that he shows a remarkable lack of respect for both his parents and for Mr. Horvanth. He says things to both parties in a manner that no child should to an adult. This, however, could simply be more social commentary on the author's part.

Those minor problems aside, Cody's story is one that's fun to follow. Despite the usual teenage mood swings and depressions when he has setbacks, Cody doesn't give up, and his struggle in this odd world he finds himself in is well worth the read.

In this Story titled Vampire High by Douglas Rees gets to elaborate in a way from a main character name Cady Elliots that shows he is a person on having to be a regular guy but has issue on his school education. For example, he gets Fs and misses classes. Even would not turn in homework whrn you suppose to. Then from what he acts takes him to a different school called [VLAD DRACUL MAGNET SCHOOL]. Then adventures in a different environment of having to bring in vampires but not just vampires. In having to tell in two kinds of vampires on one that are [Gadjes] that were one certain type that Cady hangs out with more. The other is the [Jenti] that do not like water very much. With that of how cody treats with the vampires in a way that he is like a part of one but as a human being. For the story that I ready for this 2 quarter, I have read a brief explanation on how Cady treated with Justin and another friend name Ileana who Cady had a crush on. Also on having to show in some scenario that Ileana and Cady had some sports in book that they would have a funny action to communicate. Also in a unpleasant manner from Cady with Ileana. Justin interferes from a one occasion that Justin step up and reframe Cady actions.

The good thing about this book is that it shows a person that is human and that the story tell including vampires that been involved on Cady life experiences after he moves from the beginning of the story. Also another good thing about this book is that I could understand it in a sicen that I could enjoy reading the book Vampire High. Another thing about this book is that it has a good amount for me of pages that I can read from. In Addition, on this book having to be good is that I like to read it like I would not be able to read it if I don’t like it, but I do so that is something good about this book. A thing that is bad about this book is that I am reading in a peast that I do not like that is having to read in a slow past. Another thing that the book is bad is that it is not so amazing as you can see it.

I would recommend it to more of the teens than the adults because for me teens would be more of the level for reading this book more as in 100% more than adults. Also for having to recommend it to more of the teens because in this reading of what is the purpose for the story better fits with the teens than adults who cares more of the main purpose of their life or work on what their doing too in my opinion. In Addition, of having this book more to teens is because of the plot of this book is more to the teens moreover than the adults. For comparing Women with Men on which is more recommended is more the Women in sicen that they have a better feeling to read these types of books than men that would read more male type of books maybe or because the book seems boring.
