This compelling biography of the founder of the "Ashcan School," traces Henri's life and art from boyhood, his place in the politics of art, and astutely appraises his pivotal role in the transition of American art in the 20th-century. With 79 illustrations, including 21 in full color. 9 black-and-white photographs. Index.
A fascinating read, but I got lost with all the names. I saw one of his portraits at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas (Jessica Penn in White and Black Plumes) and loved it and it inspired me to learn about the painter. A good read.
The book was not very good. Most of the paintings are either poorly done or poorly reproduced. It is hard to know which -- I suspect a bit of both. But the Appendix with Miss Klauber's notes shine and I was totally impressed by those. I suspect Henri was a better teacher than artist.
