Entertaining enough that I’m going to read book 2, but a bit disappointing in terms of setting and character. Vardeman does a bad job of creating a sense of time and place. A lot of that has to do with the names of things. The world feels pan-Asian, but the names of all the characters are just made up nonsense names that have no feeling of ethnicity or history. The characters are also prone to making dumb choices, and I never once believed that the main character would be able to complete her quest. But she does. Thanks to other people. Everything is in service to the plot, and there are some fun and exciting moments and the book is never boring.
