OUR STORY A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.
It was useful of course, but in many ways it was also a bit confusing.
I think the thing with LP guides (or possibly any travel book) is to develop an instinct for whether the writer and you share tastes and preferences. And me and Becky, I suspect, are not very similar people. She is obviously very fond of Stockholm, and all things Swedish, has spent enough time there to know it well and to speak Swedish enough to get around.
I on the other hand, was new to Sweden, which was also my first visit to Scandinavia so the whole place is an entirely new mentality. All I could say was 'Tack' and 'Viking' and I had no strong preconceptions about the place.
Becky's 'dream day in Stockholm' should have clued me to the differences between us. This would be the perfect guide for people who like shopping for Scandinavian designs, lunching, partying, seeing and being seen in fashionable places. And none of that is remotely me, at least not when I am travelling solo, so I ended up at odds with my guide a fair bit. Enough of the negativity here though, here are some positives;
The neighbourhood guides were invaluable! I was very grateful indeed that I had them, from the planning the trip stage to the day I headed to the airport to come home. The maps were ok, good enough to tide you through until you got to any of the information centres that would give you all the maps. Having all things listed by neighbourhood is exceptionally sensible for Stockholm when a 'neighbourhood' is probably an island and hence, not always as accessible from another island as an inexperienced visitor might suspect.
The Walking Tours section was also pretty good as long I bore in mind that a museum or gallery in which I could (and did) spend the WHOLE day would be presented as one stop out of 20 - 30 on a single day walking trip.
The day Excursions section was obviously out of sync with my interests, but did give a nice overview of the easily accessible things of interest in the area.
