I listened to an audio version of this play. I also checked the written play script. Central parts of this one person play, involve the protagonist showing holiday slides. I thought as I was listening, Oh this is a play that translates poorly to audio. But the script shows that no actual slides are shown. It’s a pretty clever device to home in on the emotion. The emotion apparently light and comedic, then hits on trauma and grief, bringing it out all the more. They’re on holiday. One of the spots they go to is Auschwitz. I don’t think the humorous bit or grief bit were quite right though so the effect was off.

A beautiful and painful play that introduces many important questions on what it means to write tragedy, to write intergenerational trauma, to write about atrocity. What does it mean to bring humor into a play about atrocity?

Very strong one woman play! I was surprised by how moving I found it. I can only imagine how I’d react to seeing it performed live...

Some elements are a little too close to some personal elements of my life, but a captivating read. The parallels between a Jewish Wedding, Cedar Rapids, and Auschwitz is inspired.
