Katherine Sutcliffe was born an only child in East Texas. After working for a time at an oil company and as a headhunter for a computer personnel company, Sutcliffe decided in 1982 to quit her job and attempt to write a novel. Three years later she sold her first book, Desire and Surrender to Avon Books. She works eight hours a day, five to seven months a year. Sutcliffe also attempts to find a single CD that will provide inspiration during the writing of each book. In the past, she has used the soundtrack to Somewhere in Time and Kitarō's Silk Road.

In 1995 and 1996, Sutcliffe worked as the Consultant Head Writer for the soap operas As The World Turns and Another World. Sutcliffe was offered the job after Bill Graham, who searched for writers for Proctor and Gamble, mentioned to his wife that they wanted to refocus the soap opera stories on romance. His wife, who loved Sutcliffe's book, insisted that he contact her. During her time as a soap opera writer, she concentrated on developing the six-month story lines, which the breakdown writers would then develop into dialogue and individual scenes for the show. During this time frame, Sutcliffe also made a guest appearance on Another World, playing herself. She resigned from her position after the networks began to insist that she move to New York City to be more accessible.

Her historical romance, Notorious, sold out its first printing in a mere four days.

Sutcliffe lives near Dallas, Texas. She met her husband, an English geologist, while they worked for the same oil company. They have three children, Bryan, Rachel, and Lauren. Sutcliffe also raises and shows Arabian horses.

4.25/5. Well-written story about the marriage of convenience between two lonely souls, both frowned upon and condemned by society - Olivia for her perceived past deeds and her child out of wedlock and Miles for being the natural born outcome of an earl's extramarital affair. For years, Olivia has sacrificed her own happiness to care for her father and beautiful but selfish younger sister. She sees marriage to Miles as an escape for her and her little boy and a new start for them both. Miles on the other hand reluctantly agrees to the marriage in order to right himself financially. This supposedly simple arrangement is complicated by the fact that Olivia has adored Miles since she was a young girl only he became involved with her shallow sister instead, and Miles, well he's a bit of an self-pitying ass, who took most of the book to knock off the giant trunk on his shoulder that he himself had placed there. Still, there were so many beautifully written passages and intelligent dialogues that they overrode the occasional frustration I had with the characters. To be fair, these characters were deliberately written as flawed and damaged, especially in Miles’ case, so much so that it took a while for Olivia to put him back together. She alone saw that he was worth saving, and although it took him a while for him shake off the blanket of self-pity that had been smothering him for much of his life, he did eventually save her right back.

Rereading 2021 - lost its initial five star rating, because I have less patience with self-centric people today than I did in 2014.

Re-read

This book used to be one of my all time favourites of my teenager years, and I still love it. Well, Katherine Sutcliffe used to be one of my favourite authors back then.

My Only Love is one of those stories that could not be published these days anymore, I believe. Too much drama and angst; the hero too brooding; the heroine too much of a martyr. And yet, when I think of Miles and Olivia, the memories are still so very fresh. It was lovely to re-visit them. And I finally got to read it in the English original version. I only had the German copy.

This was also the book that introduced me to Jane Austen, my English teachers preferring Charles Dickens and Mark Twain. Chapter three starts with:
"I have loved none but you. Unjust I may
have been, weak and resentful I have been,
but never inconstant... For you alone I
think and plan. Have you not seen this?
Can you fail to have understood my wishes?"
No wonder Persuasion is still my favourite Jane Austen novel. How could I resist?

I think we all will be on the same page on a sister’s sloppy seconds story. And it wouldn't be a happy page!
Here we have a secret that is not that much of a secret, a super sacrificing elder sister, a super selfish younger sister and a man between them who by the way is a complete wastrel and a jerk. So what are the chances of this plot making it? But with Katherine Sutcliffe as the author, we get a very gripping and heart wrenching story.

As much as I admired the strong and calm h, I cannot imagine anyone making such a huge sacrifice so easily and in those times. But well, she does it because she believes in the cause. I won’t say more.
The H as the embittered and impoverished bastard son of an earl is convincing. I haven’t read the preceding book but he seems to have featured as a villain in it. He doesn’t have much to recommend him but his cold and seething rage at his station in life, makes him easy to empathize with.
The h’s sister and father do their job well as the caricatured selfish and despicable family. A very essential role that!

The problems at the mines is dragged out as is the h’s sudden coolness after the marriage. For a woman who’s been in love with him since she was 12 or such, her capacity to keep him at arm’s length seems odd and aberrant.

hero with a growth arc, great heroine. Angsty emotionally, if you're invested, with a real jerk of a hero. By the end, it was nicely done with lovely acts for one another but somewhat undermined a cartoonish villainy. Engaging writing style.

This book could have been an easy 4-4.5 stars if the ending hadn't gone a little too far in it's conclusion of the heroine's main dilemma. I was captivated from the beginning and actually lost some sleep over the book. So, for that, I'm rounding my rating up to 4 stars. The writing was quality and the hero was a delicious fiend, but that ending wasn't executed at the level that the rest of the book was.

Pleasantly surprised; I was really hesitant to pick up this book as I really disliked the first book A Fire in a Heart but My Only Love turned out to be a very enjoyable read. Besotted /self sacrificing heroine is not my favourite trope, in this case, Olivia was a great heroine and hard not to like/root for.

OH FAGGOTS! THIS WAS A STUPID ASS FUCK STORY!

THE HERO IS DUMB, GOT THE BITCH PREGNANT...AND THE BITCH'S SISTER TOOK IN THEIR SON WITHOUT HIS KNOWLEDGE. HEROINE LATER MARRIES THE HERO AND THE TRUTH COMES DOWN LATER.

FUCK NO! I WOULD TAKE CARE OF MY SISTER'S CHILD BECAUSE HE IS INNOCENT BUT TO BE CAUGHT IN SUCH A FARCE WHEREBY YOU KNOW THE KID IS A BY PRODUCT OF THE MAN YOU LOVE AND YOUR BITCH SISTER, MAN GET OUT OF TOWN!!!

This book is such an emotional wreck, why do people like these exist?!

This book wasn't quite what I expected. I liked Miles since he appeared in "a fire in the heart", and found him an interesting and complex character. I liked Olivia and the unrequited love theme, but 2 things kept nagging at me:
- Olivia's relationship with her sister. It was easy to see how Em was manipulative and selfish, but it really baffled me how they would start arguing and in the same page change the subject and become the best of buddies again.
- The servants attitude. I like my historical novels to be historically accurate, and the insolent attitude of the servants really didn't reflect the strict victorian view on the different classes. Every time Sally came up with one of her insolent remarks I was pulled out of the story, and couldn't help but compare it with a Gaffney or with Downtown Abbey.
One last thing. The ending dragged on forever.

This author makes a clear point that older daughter, Olivia Devonshire, in spite of her ability to control money and increase the fortunes of her family, cannot shake her shocking reputation in 19th century England. Olivia is a never-married woman with a son.

Olivia’s father wants to get her out of the house because he is planning on his beautiful, spoiled, younger daughter (Emily) having an advantageous marriage. So Lord Devonshire calls for Miles Warwick, a penniless, illegitimate son.

When Miles gets the summons, he thinks Emily sent for him; they had an affair some years past. Perhaps Emily is ready to resume the affair? However, it is Lord Devonshire propositioning Miles to marry Olivia. Papa Devonshire thinks the marriage will silence the scandal surrounding Olivia so Emily can marry well.

Miles is destitute; he’s at the point where he is breaking up exquisite furniture to use for heat in the fireplace. Neither man consults the bride-to-be about her thoughts on the marriage; this was not an unusual arrangement in England at that time. What is interesting is that Devonshire leaves her fortune in Olivia’s own hands; Miles will have to negotiate to get what he wants.

Although Olivia marries Miles (she has been in love with him for years), she does not consider how hard it will be to marry someone who does not love her. She understands that Miles needs her money, but he does not want her.

The author uses most of the book to show how Miles and Olivia grow emotionally. Olivia learns that Miles is not a dissolute dandy; he has dreams and is willing to work for what he wants. Miles learns that Olivia is a devoted and caring person.

The beauty of this book is in showing that Miles and Olivia have both weak and strong attributes. By setting aside their differences and working together, they each grow stronger. 4.5 stars

By the way, I learned mid-way through the book that this is part 2 in a series of 2.

Started out with strong writing and interesting dynamics until it devolved into dumb telenovela-esque storytelling!! There was NO reason at all for that "plot twist" and the writer just eventually leaned on unnecessary tropes/cliches at the specific cost of interesting, complicated nuance. It just cheapened the whole ride for me. I find the romance not developed enough and overall I felt cheated on because a girl just wants a good romance between two actual, scandalous, haughty little bitches in my historicals DAMMIT

Wonderful book that goes straight to my favorites shelf. It reminded me of another book I loved, The Masquerade by Brenda Joyce, but not because of the plot similarities, but due to the overall effect it had on me & how I felt about the main characters. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes strong heroines, secret baby plot or Victorian romance.

H too stupid to see h's unrequited love, picks the more beautiful sister. h gets sister's sloppy leftovers.

Solid early 90s romance..lots of secrets and pining. Hero was more vulnerable than most, which made him likeable even when he acted like a jerk.

This is a different read. It didn't have the humour that I'm usually associate with but surprisingly I found myself entranced by it, for the first quarter of the book at least. Miles is so wicked and a villian through and through but somehow I can see how vulnerable he actually is, and I can't stop wanting a happy ending for him and Olivia is innocent yet not so innocent. I can empathised with her yearning for the hero but at times I'm so frustrated with her that I want to shake her myself.

The matter of Bryan's parentage, I can say was quite predictable.

Seriously thinking of reviewing the feedbacks. I'm so confused and frustrated with this book. It was all talk with no action. The interaction between hero and heroine were so boring, lack of romance, filled with unnecessary things. I felt like skipping few pages but it simply not done by me.

At The End
Alright I finished it. It was a frustrating read, so much things that can be done and written better. The book has good potential but somehow the flow of the story did not match well and it left me frustrated and aggravated.

The issues of Emily and her father was far from being resolved. I can't imagine them not bothering her again, they're definitely not finish with her.

The only good things about this book are;
Bryan and Alysson. I enjoyed both of them immensely.

A leer!!

This might not be the greatest book ever written but I have always enjoyed this book. I love the characters. I am always a sucker for heros who are seeking redemption and are flawed. And there is no denying the hero is flawed but he knows his faults. Granted I have never read his brothers book and I can't agree with the actions he mentions in this book that I assume are in the previous one, but in my only love he is a hero I fell in love with. There are a few times Miles is an asshole and a bit hypocritical but I could see where he was coming from.
Lately my romances have left me with being unsatisfied when I get to the end so I purposely scanned my collection for one I had read before and found my copy of my only love. I was not disappointed. Sometimes years later I reread a book and it doesn't live up to my memories, but I am happy that this was not one of them. Now fingers crossed my next book leaves me just as satisfied!

I Wasn't Swooning, but I was Entertained

Our hero's a gambler in about 10,000 pounds of debt and our heroine's family is extremely unlikable. Olivia's father, or Daddy Devonshire as I affectionately call him, has one glittering moment of being OP dad when he tells Miles he'll get Olivia's dowery, but she will have full financial control over it. Given Miles is not the most likeable man, it was a satisfying moment of emasculation.

Otherwise, Daddy Devonshire's too caught up with his youngest daughter who's a devil spawn if ever I've seen put to paper to rival Catherine Earnshaw. The younger sister's misdeeds are what make the book especially entertaining but she's comically spoiled at times.

I do recommend giving this book a read, but be prepared not to like anyone except Olivia.

I know i've read this already a few years back but, by golly, I REALY REALY LOVE THE FEEL OF READING THIS

I know that the people around Oli are such that i would rely like nothing but beat them up. But, realy, it just keeps you wanting more for her and youll just love it

This book realy gives you a heart warming, heart wrenching story of how most women love only once and how youll do anything to have that love. Some people may have lost track or may do it in ways that may be found by people as something ridiculous but, we all have ways of loving. And Oli just loved the father of her son like that - by giving him everythinf she had

The essentials of the story were good but let down by the historical setting and the mine drama (was very obvious what was going to happen). Would have been better set in modern times where the language and behaviour wouldn't have been so jarring, kept thinking the H and h wouldn't say this or do that back then which really distracted from the story.

A historical romance set in merry ole England. The main characters are Miles Warwick, a disreputable rogue, and Olivia Devonshire, one of the most notorious women in England. They are thrown together by his lack of money and her having it. Bound by empty vows at first, their marriage somehow survived and grew into a passion for each other that no force could ever pull them apart. A good read.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it…. But it was so garbage and poorly written lmao. I would’ve DNFed if it wasn’t short enough or melodramatic enough. So many problems I’m getting a headache just thinking of writing them all.
