Redwood University #1

To Reject a Mate

Rate this book

Welcome to Redwood University, where the creatures that go bump in the night really do exist… and they’re hiding in plain sight.

Attending a small college in the middle of nowhere was never my plan, but when I was offered free tuition and the promise of an excellent education, that plan changed.

It would’ve been nice to know I would be one of the only humans on campus.

It’d be even better if a certain bossy shifter didn’t claim me as his fated mate.

Alexei is arrogant, acrimonious, and the worst A-word of them all: an alpha.

But I can’t deny the way my body responds to him. No matter how many warning flags are waving around in my head, we gravitate toward one another. It’s primal. Passionate.

Painful.

Because regardless of what the fates think, or the supposed destiny we share… Alexei and I could never be.

So, if Alexei won’t reject our bond… I’ll have to do it for him.

*To Reject a Mate is the first book in the Redwood University Trilogy. It cannot be read as a standalone and ends in a cliffhanger. If possessive heroes, who occasionally turn into wolves, and sassy, headstrong heroines are your jam, you’ve come to the right place. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride into this exciting new paranormal world.

What a creatively inspired and addictively consuming debut novel from enigmatic duo Poppy Ireland! The world building, the inventive twist on the rejected mate trope, the romantic tension and all of the emotional angst! To Reject a Mate is completely mesmerizing from start to finish- a story so utterly magical and emotionally compelling that Poppy Ireland has made me fall MADLY in love with the Redwood University world, and with my old friend paranormal romance.

Rejected mates?! A supernatural university?! Twist and turns abounding?! Shifters, vampires, and witches…OH MY! Poppy delivers a wildly inventive and perfectly entertaining new world at Redwood University- a supernatural university where fraternities and sororities are comprised of factions of different supes species and where the most popular undergrads are the heirs apparent to supernatural dynasties. The drama is Gossip Girl rich, the university functions almost like the infamous Island from Lost, and the supernatural politics and drama would give Sookie Stackhouse a run for her money. In other words- the Redwood University intrigue is DELICIOUS! But planted right in the middle of all this paranormal fun is plucky co-ed Nicole, a lowly human who finds her way into a tangled web when she follows her father who has accepted a mystery but very prestigious research position. Nicole soon learns there is something strange afoot as she observes quite peculiar behavior amongst her fellow students….until she’s further gobsmacked by realizing none of them are human and GASP she’s the fated mate of the alpha’s son of the shifter faction. And mercurial Alexei does NOT want to be mated to a human…how inconvenient. OH WHAT FUN!

It’s been a while since I’ve so voraciously gobbled up a story quite like this. Poppy gives these characters plenty of depth and spins a wonderfully dramatic and well-developed plot, but she also keeps the tone light, the new adult antics dramatic, and makes the story a lot of fun. The characters are lovable and entertaining. Our shifter hero Alexei is the best alpha jerk- with all of his moody antics, over the top protective methods, and conflicted longing. But Poppy makes him oh so swoony- even though he fights the bond, it comes from a place of good. This is a man burdened by legacy, battling his instincts of integrity and compassion with the ambitions of his family, and tortured by the impossible decisions before him. He’s a good guy, even if he doesn’t yet have the fortitude to stand up for what he believes…or for his mate. And he’s OH SO SEXY. And our heroine Nicole is the type of brassy but vulnerable heroine I love in a pseudo-bully story. She’s sassy and has spine, refuses to take things at face value, but is also open minded. I love how POppy figures out a way to get her immersed in this world seamlessly, and I also love how despite her fortitude she’s also sweet and gentle- big hearted and emotionally open.

The chemistry here is a slow burning inferno - but when it ignites, Poppy delivers. The drama, banter, and romantic tension are all of the fun in this, and I was enthralled by how cleverly Poppy infuses the hallmarks of the undergrad experience with a supernatural take. The sororities, the classes, the parties and cliques. And, of course, we have our token mean girl/OW foil to add to the drama. But the other secondary characters are a delight- Corbin in particular is a scene stealing joy as Alexei’s preppy and humorous beta. Prepare to fall madly in love with them all! Poppy clearly has a flair for comedy- this story is brimming with sass, and the writing is seamless.

But, this witchy duo does do us wrong in the end- we’re left shattered by a dramatic cliffhanger that has you BEGGING for answers. Fortunately, this series is a rapid release, so it won’t be too long to we return to this world full of alphas and sassy mates. So dive right on into this imaginative and immersive new paranormal world, it will put you under its thrall immediately! I AM DESPERATE FOR BOOK 2!!!!!!!!

This didn’t read like a rejected mate book or a university/academy book. Aside from the dorms and the “sorority/fraternity” stuff, there was no real NA university themes. The h does not give a shit about a mate bond and the H rejecting her because she doesn’t actually feel the bond. Where’s the angst?!? I don’t understand why he isn’t trying to research and figure out how he could end up with a human as mate. He’s all woe is me, this situation sucks, I have to stay away from her but like why not figure out how this could have happened?!? They’re all morons in the book. How can he not even stand to be touched by Mara because his wolf only wants his mate in the beginning but then has no problem kissing her later in the book? Ugh, what. Sloppy. It’s like half way through they forgot he was a wolf. I wonder if these authors typically write contemporary.

There was too much pushing and not enough pulling. The back and forth push pull dynamic only works when there is chemistry between the two characters. There’s zero relationship development, just a whole lot of bickering. I was shocked when they started fucking.

There’s an immaturity to the writing and a lot of the jokes are super cringey. The writing was sloppy and needed to be edited way back. There are inconsistencies throughout the whole thing. The last half was slightly better than the first half. These two authors seemed to have kind of gotten their groove once they started focusing on the plot. I may skim book two just to see how the cliff hanger ended up but if it’s as wordy and redundant as book one is I don’t think I’ll get far.

The back and forth between Alexei and Nicole was so exhausting, also I really don’t like Alexei, for an alpha he’s really spineless, willing to give up his mate just because his dad wouldn’t aprove

Oh. My. Fucking. God!!! What an absolutely phenomenal debut novel! How does it get better then this? But I know it will because hello we still have book two & three to come! Plus hopefully more side characters books?! Here’s me already demanding more & this is their first book haha! But man I’m officially in love with these two authors! I don’t know who they are but together they are magically devious & created a masterpiece!

This new world?! I don’t even know if I have the words. I will say I want to watch Nicole raze hell on this world! I want her to burn it to the ground & build it back up like the motherfucking Queen that she is! God did I absolutely adore her character! Alexei can go kick rocks for all I care, there are so many more delicious characters for her to choose from! Okay I still love him even if I want to kick his ass to hell (& leave him there for a few days) & back! How can you not fall in love with all of these characters?!?! I mean besides the evil despicable one. I need to know what’s next for these two!

That cliffhanger though!?!?! Why would they do us like that!! I went back & reread the last three chapters because I could just not believe they’d leave us hanging like that. Here’s me praying that book two releases soon!! I NEED IT!!!

Also I started this book at 9pm & thought okay I’ll read a few chapters. Now it’s 1:30AM & I have 5 hours till I have to go to work & I have a cold & I’m telling myself just go to sleep write your review tomorrow… NO my brain will not shut off it just keeps replaying everything I read & I know I’m rambling & this review definitely doesn’t do this book justice but it’s a must read in my opinion!

Holy freaking alpha wolf hotness! I am obsessed with Poppy Ireland's writing and their Redwood University world. Jaw dropping twists. Heart stopping action. Sizzling hot chemistry and raw emotions. The writing is incredible. The plot is clever, complex and fast paced. The Wait for the next book will kill me but I know it will be so worth it.

Nicole has travelled to the remote Redwood University to start the college where her scientist father got a prestigious research job. But this university has secrets. It is run by and mostly attended by supernaturals. And the most powerful, the future alpha of the wolf shifters, Alexei Koenig has a problem. Nicole is his mate but having a human as mate is disastrous. Nicole has been thrown into a dangerous situation. But she has Powers she doesn't know about herself.

This story moves at a break neck speed. The petty and manipulating part of the supernaturals thought that Nicole will be easy to control and break. But she is so strong and fierce. She is sassy and brave and she won't let anyone cower her so easily. And as the time goes, she starts finding things about herself those make no sense. Like she can overcome the containment spell and can hear everything. Like she has a powerful familiar. Like she has own protection charm. Like her past is closely related to supernaturals. But ultimately she is human and has no place with Alexei. I am so in love with this rejected mate trope. The way the big bad alpha wolf goes crazy for his mate. The maddening possessiveness. The overpowering protectiveness. The insane jealousy. The pain that tears him when he has to stay away from Nicole. And rejected mate obviously adds another level of heartbreak in supernatural intensity. Alexei is torn between his future and his mate. Their chemistry is primal but our girl is fierce enough that she won't just give in to the lust. This story was all about power plays , mind games, action and suspense and I just couldn't put it down. It's just start of a breathtaking journey. It has a vast secondary character cast and it is just way too complicated to be captured in a short review. If you love PNR, this is a must read. If you don't read PNR, it can be the book to make you fall in love with the genre.

You can find this review of To Reject A Mate on my blog, Heart’s Content

A big shout out and thank you to The Hatters Author Services and Poppy Ireland for including me in the blog tour of To Reject A Mate and providing me with a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review!

I’m a gigantic sucker for all things fated mates. This book was basically catnip for me. When I read the blurb, I signed up faster than someone can say ‘gotcha!’. The premise seemed interesting to me and I was curious if the author could take fairly well known and often-seen tropes and do something different with it.

After the era of Twilight, the whole trope of heroes running hot and cold basically ran away. It was no longer loved or even liked. So it’s really really hard to write a book—at least, I feel so—in this time and day of characters that run hot and cold and not stress out the reader. Angst is fine. Hot and cold? Not so much.

But the author really manages to convey the seriousness of the circumstance surrounding the MCs just as prominently as the intensity of the connection between them. It also helped that the MCs share narration space. We see the world through both their eyes and while I’m not always fond of shifting POVs, it was certainly a smart decision to make.

The book has a lot of humour and a majority of it is adult. So definitely check out the trigger warnings and the genre of this book before you go in, to ensure the content is to your taste and comfort.

The book was entirely unpredictable to me and I found that refreshingly new, given that the genre and tropes were equivalent of old paved roads in the fantasy romance category. The plot deepens with each chapter and there wasn’t a dull moment to me. The characters sounded their age for the most part with a sprinkle of quirks brought on by the influence of community or specific circumstances.

There are many struggles between the MCs outside of those they face because of the plot and I found that interesting. They call one another out, fight to stay away and fight to be together at the same time. The pull and push doesn’t grate on the nerves as far as the first book is concerned, and I’m curious how the author is going to write the arc of their relationship for the remaining of their story.

This was an entertaining, interesting, funny five star read with lots of twists and turns, for me! Check trigger warnings and a happy reading to you!

Wow! This book is absolutely riveting, I literally couldn't put it down. Such brilliant story telling, it drew me right in and I felt every emotion that was pouring out of the pages. That ending was absolutely brutal though and I need to get my hands on book two asap to see how it all works out because right now I want to murder Alexi!

Well this was a fun paranormal read. I liked the way the world was set up and introduced. Nicole is definitely a type of character I lean towards and I was nervous she wouldn’t be in the beginning but once she visited the coffee shop, iykyk, it all started to look up for me.

This is definitely a slower burn for the fated mate trope. These two can’t be together but it’s hard for them to stay away leading to lots of angst. I do enjoy the two characters and Corbin and Juniper as well. The cliffhanger was mean so I need the second book asap, please and thank you.

A great beginning to a new fantastical world! This trilogy brings all the feels and made my reading soul giddy with all of the paranormal factions that pop up. I am stuffed full with how freakishly fantastic this supernatural world is!!!

Redwood University is mixed with all the new adult hormones and finding yourself that college typically brings, along with the challenges that mixing vamps, shifters, witches, and humans might also bring. For instance; it's a stew of hormonally charged young adults just trying to earn a degree, but with all the challenges of fitting in to sorortity life...oh by the way they are sectioned off by supernatural power, which none of the humans know about. OR, Do you actually like that guy or is it a spell? Is that guy attractive or could a vamp possibly enthralled you? Why are you constantly giving directions into town? LOL, the creation of this world is brilliant and I loved everything about it.

Nicole didn't really want to attend Redwood, but her father got a job there which meant free tuition. That's hard to pass up. However, she was going to make the most of it, until things went downhill...like gaining the attention of one of the most popular guy on campus. That wasn't her intent, she wasn't at school to date, but Alexei wouldn't seem to stay away. He couldn't help himself, Nicole was his mate, his human mate. He didn't want the bond, but the fates chose her, but until he could figure it out, he had to stay away...somehow.

This book was filled with angst, fun - oh my goodness the secondary characters are hilarious, suspense, and an element of mystery. For a new duo of writers, this book is just brilliant, a truly great beginning and I can't wait to return for more.

Crazy good

Damn! Talk a out gripping! I could not stop reading if my life depended on it. Our H is put through the ringer here. I hope she burns everything and everyone to the ground. At this point I hope she doesn't give her mate even a chance in the second book. He did more damage then help throughout the entire read. I hope she kicks serious butt in this next book because idk what I'd do if she continued with taking crap a second time around.

Wow!!! What a debut that was. This book was just what I needed in a string of meh books. I think my brain is still screaming nooooooo when I realized I was at the end of the book. I can not wait to see what happens next.
I was 100% engrossed in Nicole and Alexei's story. The drama, the romance, the characters, the fighting, and did I mention the DRAMA. I loved the world Poppy Ireland has set up here. I'm on the edge just waiting to see what book 2 will bring next.

ALL THE STARSSSSS!!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’m so obsessed with this book.

To be honest, I’m always skeptical when I pick up a new author, but this absolutely blew me away. So well written. The plot development was seriously on point. I was 100% into this story.

I hate spoilers in reviews, but I will say it is freaking phenomenal and I have a feeling this trilogy will easily slide to my top 5.

Thank goodness Poppy Ireland is a great writer that can craft a compelling story and create interesting characters, because otherwise I might not have stuck with this book until the end. Why, do you ask? Oh, because of the dreaded slow burn. And by slow burn, I mean dang near the end of the last act and it’s not even that explicit.

You guys know me: I’m a thirsty girl. I love my fast to medium burns, and I like my spicy scenes to be just that–SPICY. The single steamy scene in this book is closer to a regular ol’ romance novel than what I’m used to reading. It was quick and it was… normal? Normal-ish? Whatever it was, it wasn’t my usual cup of jet fuel.

Luckily, Ireland gives us readers who are used to jet fuel spice scenes something to hold onto in the form of an intriguing FMC who truly loves her father, a compelling storyline, a pair of star-crossed lovers, a rumbling of conspiracy under the surface, buckets of secrets left to be spilled, and fun supporting characters.

I think Ireland may have used this first book to get the vast majority of world-building and character development out of the way so in the next two books the storyline and romantic relationship can really shine through without too much exposition getting in the way. It’s a smart move I wish more authors made, but it does tend to make the first books in these series a little harder to read for us readers who like our spice. But if you can hang on, the story pays off, and I think we’ll all appreciate the next two books all the more.

I was provided a copy of this book by the author. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are mine alone. Thank you.

OH my freaking fated stars! THIS BOOK! This book is pure magic. It is legit EVERYTHING I needed to get me out of my reading slump and my mind is SO blown away by what Ireland has given us. It is intense, passionate, twisty and so full of intrigue that I am DYING for more. I will say that this book is the first of a trilogy and it will end in a cliffy that has me begging for more. The world building has my mind spinning!
With that said, I lived for the connection between Nicole and Alexei. The undercurrents between these two will have you swooning. My heart ached as the “college” drama made its rounds between these two. Between the pack’s dilemma to being fated to a human, Alexei’s perfect life set up has been blown to smithereens. Nicole is one of the best leading ladies I have read in a long time. She is sassy, doesn’t back down and loves like no other. When secrets are exposed and things are coming to light, it leaves me with more questions and dying to know what will happen next.
Overall, this is a brilliant start to this series and grabs you like no other. I know that this is the culmination of two authors. Being their debut, the writing flows beautifully and paints a stunning picture as you read this story. Between the imagery, the depth of the story and the intriguing twists that are bound to come, I cannot wait to find out more. But can I just say Mara can get bent? Sorry not sorry!

Fantastic first book by a secret writing duo who was born to co-write. This duo brings a refreshing twist and story of alpha male wolf and human mate.

Alexei is set to take over his pack as Alpha and needs a mate just as capable as he is to help him lead. Nicole is nothing like he expected and everything he has been raised to hate. With a mate bond to navigate, there is a push and pull between these two that keeps the line very fine between love and hate.

The writing is superb, and the dialog kept me turning the page. The cast of side charcters DO NOT disappoint, and I hope we have an opportunity to explore some of their lives long after this trilogy is complete.

Ok, so I thought I was going to be done with the book at about 60% because the "star crossed lovers" trope was giving me major anxiety. However, I switched to the book version instead of the audiobook and was able to push through 😂 (anxiety is so dumb!)

I'm so conflicted in this review. On the one hand I really loved / enjoyed Ms. Ireland's writing style, however ... The story dealt with tropes I usually steer clear of because they give me major anxiety.
Specifically: star crossed lovers, and compulsion/ mind control.

I’ve never in my whole life read such a mind-blowing introduction to not just a new series but also such a uniquely captivating world.

I’m floored by the creative liberties this duo not only imagined, but they were so fantastically detailed that everything came to life before your eyes. Once I started, there was no chance of me stopping until I read every magical word.

Nicole and her father are both new to Redwood University. Her father was offered the job of a lifetime, and Nicole couldn’t pass up the free tuition and being close to her dad. She’s a sassy human surrounded by supernatural. She garners attention from different supes; some want her and others want rid of her. Only one can make her tingle by being near.

Alexei has mastered a broody alpha-hole like no one else. He’s weighed down by the expectations of being the next alpha, but he can command those around him with a change in his tone. Which basically means there will be vanishing panties because this man is an alpha extraordinaire. His quick temper and sharp tongue might make the wolves in his future pack cower, but he’s no match for his feisty human mate.

The connection between Nicole and Alexei moved through them like a firestorm the moment they met. They were perfect for each other. It’s just that she’s a human, and he’s the future alpha. I loved the banter, along with the push and pull between them. She was gentle and considerate of others, but she was also sassy and not afraid to challenge the big bad alpha.

If you’re looking for an insta-everything this isn't the book for you. This is an intricately woven story with many moving parts. This is the type of book the word "spellbinding" is meant for. Within a few words, I was plucked straight from reality and placed inside a world with shifters, witches, warlocks, and fae, and that’s where I stayed. My mind was spinning, my heart ached, my tummy fluttered, and anything and everything the characters felt flooded my veins as though it were my reality.

I loved the dialogue between the characters. Clever and well-placed sarcasm that made me laugh out loud. Sometimes the words cut like a knife, digging deep and unforgivingly. This duo has meticulously placed every word to lay out this new world, and the fact that this is merely the beginning fuels my book-loving soul. I can’t wait to see what happens next, not just with

A little warning:

When you dive into this, don’t plan on participating in real life. Not even a little. Not even at all. This duo has woven this story together with literary magic that will have every part of you consumed by the Redwood University world.

To Reject a Mate is my first top read of 2023 and a new all-time favorite. A spellbinding introduction to the Redwood University series and a helluva debut Teeming with vehement chemistry, a broody alpha hero, a sassy heroine, tantalizing twists and turns, ALL THE FEELS, steam, and an ending that will take your breath away.

One of my favorite things about paranormal/fantasy romance, especially when it’s a new author to me, is opening the book and knowing the possibilities are endless. They can make their own rules in the world they create. Shifters, vampires—come on, remember the ones that sparkled? I can assure you that this duo’s vampires don’t sparkle.

The important part is that whatever rules are set inside the world need to make sense (not in a real-life way) and that anything that’s laid out as fact or a rule as part of the fictional world stays consistent.

what an amazing story

Thought this would be your typical rejected mates romance but it’s so much more. The story here is based around Nicole, a “human” who ends up attending Redwood a university for supernaturals. She discovers this in a spelled coffee from a clairvoyant warlock. Love how Nicole and her fated mate Alexi despite knowing they can’t be together can’t help themselves. Nicole is clever, kind and smart and tries to fit in with people who consider her bottom of the pile. The way this book is written it really conveys her struggles to join her mothers sonority and make friends. This book made me both laugh and cry in equal measure at some of the bizarre situations Nicole encounters.
That cruel ending tho, I really must find out what happens next.

This book was such an awesome start to this series. It's like Cruel Intentions meets Teen Wolf. I got sucked in straight away and I love our Main Character Nicole, she is a human that has started attending Redwood University, but she soon finds out that she's a human surrounded by paranormals and she has such a kickass personality.

We have the Alpha heir Alexi who is the big man on campus, but he is his father's puppet. I wanna punch both of them in the jewels.

We have sorority and frat rush week, mean girls cattyness, Fated Mates, wolf shifters, witches and so much more!

This series is a rapid release so we don't have to wait too long.

Umm, can you say obsessed with this book!! The plot, the characters, & the fact that two secret authors came together to make Poppy Ireland's debut Novel. A 5 stars hit (in My eyes ) is ming blowing. ( I almost want to make it my life's mission to find out who they are so I can go and read their back logs if I haven't already )

This whole book gave me goosebumps it was so well written. The plot was spectacular!! I honestly wasn't sure where the book was going to go at first and to have such an immediate reaction for two of the side characters gahhhh Both I disliked From the moment they were introduced & he wiggled his way into my heart and I just adore him. He's funny.
The other I've never experienced, such a hatred for a side character... like on a bone deep level. I hope she gets what she deserves.

Slow burning rejected mates are a number one favorite for me. Alexei ohh man, he won my heart over. He's super caring and possessive af. Ahhh swoon.
Nicole is phenomenal, she's a quirky bad ass girl makes sacrifices

Great character development.

Paranormal romances don't tend to be my go-to reads, but this series hooked me and has skyrocketed to the top of my most anticipated list! This fated mate romance is about human Nicole who is in her freshman year of college and attending a school her dad was offered a huge incentive to work on his research project at. There she instantly meets wolf shifter Alexei who is alpha of the elite pack and instantly recognizes Nicole as his mate. But how can a human be a Luna and having her as his mate would risk his standing with his pack and, more importantly, power-hungry father. They fight the strong mutual undercurrent constantly floating around them, while navigating the best way to proceed without endangering Nicole. The end result is an emotional cliffhanger that leaves you hanging ready for more! This first book has some steam but doesn't focus heavily on it, though the scenes you do get are detailed and worth the payoff, and I suspect you'll get more as the series continues. This book was all about setting the tone for this magical world where supernatural and humans cohabitate. I loved all the side characters and their factions, which gives me hope for more books about some of them without losing focus on fierce Nicole and mate Alexei. I enjoyed both our main characters, too, though Nicole is a stand out in this book for her strength. Alexei is clearly caught up in a complicated power struggle forced to go against his own nature. I definitely see the potential for our hero and his motives for his actions, which deliver some stellar angst filled scenes. I'm so excited for this series and answers to the mysteries this book left us with! Defintely read this one especially if you've enjoyed the Rejected series by Jaymin Eve. This one gave off equally excellent vibes and was beautifully executed while still feeling unique and new

Wow! It’s been a good while that I’ve had a fated mates/PNR book capture my attention this much. The writing was amazing, so whoever this duo is did such a good job at blending their voices. Nicole is such a strong heroine, she was written in a way that wasn’t too over the top but clearly showed her awesomeness and a willingness to not back down. I’m a sucker for books where she doesn’t know she’s powerful and ends up being something others didn’t expect. I cannot wait to see what happens next!

PS: what made me realize early on that I was going to really like this book was Nicole’s relationship with her dad! Once I saw how close they were and the banter, I knew I was going to enjoy this so much!

I'm disappointed. I almost DNF at 90%.
Overall it could have been a good book. But too many irritating things.
Why would she keep trying to get into the wolf sorority when everyone in it treated her sooo poorly. Why did no one ask Antonio about his dreams. Alexie was raving about how great she was even though he really didn't know her yet. Why not get Mace out of the car when she saw someone coming. How come her necklace repelled the first 2 shifters but not the alpha?
By the end I just didn't like Nicole.

TO REJECT A MATE is the first instalment in Poppy Ireland’s contemporary, new adult REDWOOD UNIVERSITY paranormal, romance trilogy focusing on heir to the Redwood Pack Alpha Alexei Koenig, and eighteen year old Nicole Fairweather.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Alexei and Nicole) TO REJECT A MATE focuses on eighteen year old Nicole Fairweather as she vows to pledge the Beta Phi sorority at Redwood University, the sorority of which her late mother was a member. When her father was offered a position in the genetics research labs at Redwood University, Nicole was disappointed in the face of not going to NYU. Free tuition, and room and board were her father’s selling points but within hours of arrival Nicole knew something wasn’t right about Redwood University. A truth spell would reveal the existence of the supernatural, and the crown prince was her fated mate but Alexei Koenig knew shifters were not allowed to mate with lowly humans, and Nicole found herself a target of the mean girls, bullies, and the man in charge. What ensues is the building but forbidden romance between Nicole and Alexei, and the fall-out when Nicole is targeted, and her father’s life hangs on the line.

Nicole Fairweather is human, or at least she thought she was human, but something more is slowly evolving. Looking into the truth about her past, Nicole will discover that she is the ‘something more’ and her powers are just coming into play when her life and the life of her father are threatened. Alexei Koenig has been prepared to take over the mantle of Alpha since he was a young boy but his brutal father sees him as nothing but a failure, a failure that will expose Nicole to the betrayal and cruelty of the beings at Redwood University.

The relationship between Nicole and Alexei is one of fated mates but a forbidden relationship as Nicole is believed to be a human, unworthy in the eyes of the Alpha Pack leader, a man who is willing to kill to protect the purity of the shifter species. Alexei Koenig knows immediately that Nicole Fairweather is his mate but from the outset Alexei struggles to push Nicole out of his heart and his mind but his inner wolf demands they claim Nicole as their own. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate and intense.

We are introduced to Nicole’s father Dr. David Fairweather; Redwood University president and Pack Alpha Jones Koenig and his ‘luna’ Anya; Alexei’s best friend and Beta Corbin, and his sister Mara, as well as witch Juniper, wolf Hunter, vampire Christian, and Nicole’s familiar Macey. The requisite evil, including bullies, mean girls, and malevolent adults, has many faces.

TO REJECT A MATE is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, bullies and discrimination, speciesism and hatred, acceptance and loss. The premise is intriguing and action-packed; the romance is seductive and fated but struggles in the face of rejection; the characters are numerous, magical, and charismatic. TO REJECT A MATE ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

Well, talk about knocking it out of the park their first time at bat! Okay, their first time at bat together? Seriously, I don't know who this dynamic duo is, but if this debut is any indication of what's to come, I'm adding another name to my list of must-read authors.
I knew before reading the first word that To Reject a Mate would have a cliffy, and boy, does it ever. No easing into it for this pair. Even knowing it was coming and watching the corner of my Kindle screen as it counted down the percent left, I still wasn't prepared, and I really, really need more of this world and its fantastical characters. Alexei and Nicole keep things interesting on their own, but they aren't the only characters to get under my skin. I realize this trilogy is their fated mates story, but there are so many terrific characters here, and I hope for so many of them to get their own stories. With so many supernaturals in one place, the possibilities are endless. Plus, there's the whole University setting with its cliques. I mean, these authors have thought of everything. We get the big man on campus and his circle of followers. Of course, there's no shortage of women hanging on his every word. We get the mean girl who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. And then, we get the new girl, who is catching everyone's eye. So, it's like a new adult campus romance combined with a paranormal fated mates romance, and it's totally delicious.
I can't wait to see what happens as things progress. There are enough secrets to keep us all guessing, and I'm very impatiently waiting for the reveals of those secrets because I have questions! Lots of questions. I realize that I've been vague, but I don't want to give away any of this book's secrets. This is one that needs to be enjoyed spoiler free, and I highly recommend you grab it and jump in. You won't regret it.

POV:Dual
Nicole & Alexei

Isn't it great when you find a new to you author? I stumbled upon this book, I can't remember where I saw it. But the blurb just drew me in. I didn't realise that this is a trilogy. I was 90% in thinking to myself "this is going to end in a cliffhanger isn't it?" I devoured this.

Nicole and her Dad head to Redwood University as his new job is a ground breaking research and he's the best in his field. Even though she was accepted into different schools, she doesn't want to be separated from her only parent. She never knew her mother, she died in chiĺdbirth. She'd only worry about him. He burys himself into his work and neglects himself. Nicole is bright, knows what she wants. And she wants to rush the sorority her mother was in, just to feel closer to her. But things don't go according to plan. Strange things start happening.
Things become clearer, but why isn't she freaking out that supernatural beings really do exist?

Alexei, werewolf, the future alpha, finds his fated mate in Nicole. But she's human, and it's not possible to be mated to a human, she'll never be accepted. His father, current alpha, would make a stop to the pairing. Alexei hides this news from him.
Trying to fight the bond, can they stay away from each other?
Alexei, Corbin (Alexei's second), Juniper ( a Witch that's befriended Nicole), are trying to help figure out what's happening to Nicole and why?

Fast paced, full of angst, drama and suspense.
Looking forward to book 2
