Taffy comes back from Hollywood and is treated much differently at home. How will she leave home again once she starts to fit in if her new movie is going to be made into a television series? This book deals with the want to fit in, and how to deal with problems
Maybe it's because my feisty grandma chased tarantulas around with a broom when we lived on an oil lease property when I was a baby that made me love danger and adventure. And maybe it was my father's spending nights as a trombonist with the bands of his day and his days spent drawing sketches that sparked my artistic side. Do you suppose that because my mother stood only four feet ten inches tall that I feel like a giant at five feet? And I'm sure my FBI (Full Blooded Italian) step-father, his seven brothers and sisters and their families are responsible for my LOVE of Italian food. That's who I am. Who are you?
My First Book, Peppy The Frog That I Wrote In The 2nd Grade
I'll always be a child at heart. Whenever I close my eyes, wonderful, funny, awful, embarrassing memories of middle school/junior high come flooding back to fill the pages of my contemporary novels. My childhood friendships and rivalries with old enemies all find their way into my books. I've even spied on my own kids for story ideas.
Unlike most kids who can't wait to grow up, I've gotten younger--at least my stories have. I've stepped into the world of 7 to 10 year olds.
I and my husband, Jim, live in Texas on Lake Lewisville north of Dallas. We are owned by our greyhound, Miller. Our favorite things to do are traveling the world and boating.
I haven’t been a huge fan of this series, but I actually quite enjoyed this last installment. I feel like Taffy finally get the upper hand over bully Jana and her jealous cow friends. Not you five bitches, that’s for damn sure. 3.5 stars
Taffy returns home from Hollywood. She wonders how everyone will treat her. Will she fit in or feel out of place. At least she has Shawnie and Corey. It’s been six weeks and she wonders if Corey still feels the same. She’s surprised to see Dekeshia in her pj’s but she says it’s “PJ Day”. They voted on having a theme day once a (month?). All the girls are wearing slippers and pj outfits. The boys are wearing normal clothes. Taffy instantly feels out of place. Some girls tho come over to her and start asking her about her time in Hollywood.
When Taffy starts to tell them about it, they look at each other. Then they abruptly leave. Shawnie then comes up to her and tells her she has tons to tell her that she couldn’t in letters. Shawnie introduces her to Kim, but Kim says she has something to do and leaves. Taffy’s wondering why she’s so into Kim and she’s supposed to be her best friend. She expresses her concern about Corey and Shawnie says they’ll go find him.
Taffy brings up to Shawnie that people are staring at her and brings up Raven Blaine. She asks Shawnie did she mention Raven to Corey and she says of course not. As they go down the hall, Taffy can’t help notice the kids are looking at her and thinks how envious they must be. She goes off to look for Corey but here’s the Fab Five talking about how much more she’ll be stuck up now. They say it’s a shame. She was starting to be nice. Melanie says now she’ll start making up stories about how she’ll be dating hot guys like Raven Blaine. But she *did* go out with Raven Blaine but she can’t let that out.
Mr. Neal lets Taffy-encouraged by Monda-tell them about her time in Hollywood. So she gladly does starting from Day !. She accidently mentions Raven, but thinks it’s ok as long as she’s careful. Laura notably isn’t impressed. After homeroom, Monie wants her autograph and it reminds her of what happened at the mall. Taffy catches up with Corey in the hallway. He comments on wrapping up the shooting and she mentions they all went to a wrap up party at Raven’s house-and wonders why she did-. Corey asks her if she’d like to go to a movie Friday and Taffy says she’d love to. Then he goes to join his boys for lunch.
She can’t find Shawnie at lunch, but when she does she’s with Kim-which irritates Taffy-. Kim and Shawnie start to gossip about Marcie and Taffy feels left out. The gossip is that Marcie passed a boy named Derek a note asking who he liked the best because she said a friend wanted to know and he looked at her like she was crazy. Shawnie says she meant to tell Taffy about it but forgot in thiere letters. Taffy then tries to get into the conversation by mentioning her date with Corey. Shawnie says that’s great. They can double like they’d always planned to.Kim says she’s surprised. He’s already seen everything at the movies. (She sings in his band). Taffy snaps at her that maybe that doesn’t matter as long as he’s seeing it with her he might not care.
But later, she thinks maybe she shouldn’t have snapped at Kim. She’s just tired of her hanging around all the time. Shawnie invites Taffy to Bumpers after school. Their boyfriends won’t be there because they have to practice-which means Kim won’t be there-. Shawnie says they’ve been practicing constantly so they can sound more professional. Taffy’s about to say something how she gets it, but Shawnie isn’t listening -and doesn’t want to hear about anything but Raven-. So, they start talking about him. Taffy tells Shawnie some tidbits. They didn’t kiss but would have. She tells her his real name and that when off set he’s shy. She tells her about how he sent her flowers but was too shy to sign his name.
As they enter Bumpers, she reminds her not to tell Kim. They go over to sit with Lisa and Alexis-who didn’t say anything to her before Taffy notices-. They say it’s boring there and Taffy starts to talk about the great time she had in Hollywood-and Raven-. Tammy and Marcie say it sound like her new friends are better and she’s surprised she even has time for Shawnie-. Then they start to mock her-which makes Taffy tear up-. They see it as bragging. She sees it as just telling them. Shawnie has to break this down to her. Taffy asks what’s the point of having something amazing happen and not being able to talk about it. Shawnie says she can talk to her about it.
Shawnie says they just don’t understand because they’ve never done anything like and it makes them feel like nothings. Taffy’s mother says don’t pay them any attention. One day they’ll be happy to have known her. Taffy tho doesn’t want to waiat for someday. She wants it NOW! After this, Taffy just doesn’t talk about her time in Hollywood. She doesn’t even wear Raven’s necklace.
Corey walks Taffy home from school and notices she’s quiet. He asks I f she’s thinking about Raven. He heard some people saying she thought he was really cool. She plays it down and says she just said he was nice. Corey says he didn’t mean to sound jealous. Taffy says she just doesn’t feel like going to her acting class. She likes acting but she’d rather be spending time with him. Then she says her mother’s been on one because she doesn’t wwwant someone else getting the part. Of course this is what her MOTHER wants. Corey says she should take singing lessons so she can replace Kim in the Dreadful Alternatives. Taffy laughts this off but then things hmmm..
He says talk it over with her mom. She’d still be a star. Her mother gets on her in the car about memorizing her lines. Tafffy’s thinking why doesn’t she get off my case and let me live my own life. After the acting class, Corey calls Taffy and invites her to go roller-skaing. He asks if she spoke to her mother and she says not yet-knowing her mother will NOT go for this-. Taffy’s mother throw a fit when she finds out they’re going skating. What if Taffy breaks her ankle. Corey is cool about it tho and says it’s not a problem. They can go to the movies.
Taffy is mad tho. She doesn’t want to be singled out from all the other kids. Corey tho says there’s somewhere else he wants to go. He has to ask her something in private. He takes her to a nice park and asks her to go steady. Taffy vows that she will NOT be going back to Hollywood and she’ll convince her mother to let her take singing lessons. The next day, she calls Shawnie to tell her but she isn’t there. So, she day dreams about being on stage with the Dreadful Alternative. Her mother comes into her room with a letter from Paige Kramer. Her mother lingers around to see if Paige said something about the sitcom. Taffy says she’ll let her know.
But it’s just “I miss you” and catching up stuff. She says she’ll let her know anything if she hears anything from the producers. She also says Raven wants her address. He says he’ll write soon. When Shawnie calls, Taffy finds out she was at Kim’s. Taffy’s a little annoyed but tells her about what happened with her and Corey. Taffy tells Shawnie she’ll forget about Raven because she’ll never see him again, but she isn’t so sure how she feels. After this, she waits for a letter from Raven but none comes. So, she decides he doesn’t like her after all.
Things go back to normal and Taffy finds her old life boring and vents to Shawnie. Shawnie agrees and suggest she join The Media Club l ike her. When she goes tho Beth and Funny give her a look when she corrects Paul and gives him a Hollywood term. No one seems to be happy she’s there. Mrs. Levine tells her to just observe today. Taffy is amazed at how amateur the Media Club is. Corey tells her don’t join but Taffy said it would hurt Shawnie’s feelings and she feels like she could teach them something. He invites her to a rehersal. She asks would the guys mind. HE says nah and that’s how Shawnie meet Kim.
Shawnie says they can ride over with Kim. Then she goes on and on about her grandparents coming over from China and how she learned to eat with chopsticks. But when she gets home, her mother tells her the acting teacher is having a special class. She tells her she’ll have to forget any plans she had with her friends. Taffy runs up to her room and slams the door. She almost lost her best friend. If she goes back to Hollywood she could lose Corey. Reluctantly she calls Corey and Shawnie. Corey is nonplused. Shawnie is sympathetic. She says she thinks Kim has a crush on Corey tho.
Mr. Crandall-the casting director- says things look good for the tv series and they’ll know as soon as the movie premiers. (He’s at the acting class and was the one who auditioned Taffy. He’s there auditioning more cast). Mrs. Sinclair is annoyed because she thinks Taffy is going to replaced. Taffy is annoyed and says he’s there to get more cast. A sitcome would have more cast than a movie. Mr. Crandal then has them do some improvisations. Summer is good! Cynthia is good! Then it’s Taffy’s turn. Taffy has to make a choice. She can ace it or blow it. She sees Cynthia and decides to go for it. Amazingly it’s about her being in love with a young man but she’ll have to go away. She imagines Corey there with her. She leaves everyone tearing up. The director says there’s no doubt no one can play the role in the series but her.
On Monday, Taffy’s mother refuses to let her wear a tacky outfit for “Clash Day” and makes her go back upstairs and change her clothes. That day, Taffy again sees her classmates whispering and figure they think she thinks she’s too good to join them. Later, she gets a letter from Raven that says he misses her and wants her to come back to Hollywood. Then she thinks about how much she misses *that* life. Then decides that’s really where she belongs. If the movie becomes a series she’s definitely going back. Then she goes back and forth which would be the best thing. Corey. Raven. Corey. Raven. Decessions! Decessions!
She shows Shawnie Raven’s letter the next day but they’re so loud they catch the attention of some of the other students. Shawnie is in estacy! She asks Taffy what she’s going to do. She says she’s not going to let Kim have Corey. Taffy gets called to the office during class. Mr. Bell says her movie will be shown tomorrow at 4 and he’s going to announce it to the whole school. Shawnie and Taffy decide to turn the premire into a party. Shawnie, Taffy, Craig, and Corey watch the movie together. Jokingly, Corey asks if she had a crush on Raven because it was obvious her character had a thing for her. Luckily, the doorbell rings but it’s long-stemmed red roses .. from Raven and Corey sees.
After that the thrill is LONG GONE! Marge Whitworth interviews Taffy. Shawnie and Kim applaud her. Corey doesn’t. He left that night silent. Kim is all up Taffy’s behind complimenting her but when she rushes off Shawnie and Taffy notice she’s gone right over to Corey. Shawnie says he’s been getting teased because the guys have been asking him if he’s going to use Taffy to make a name for his band. Now Taffy is hoping the movie won’t get made into a show. After school, Taffy’s mom comes to get her in a limo. She says Mr. Crandal sent it to meet with him.
He of course says the ratings were good and the show is a green light. They start shooting next week. Taffy tells Shawnie she doesn’t know if the tv series was approved. She calls Kim tho and tells her it was but she didn’t want to tell her until she knew Shawnie would have a good friend. Kim wants her to introduce her to Raven Blaine. She tells him about her problem with Corey and she says she needs to talk to him. So, she does and he says he gets it. It’s where she belongs. He says he’s not mad, but she can’t get mad if he goes out with Kim. They have fun together. Now she can leave knowing everythings settled. He invites her to rehersal before she leaves. Her mother says absolutely not! But then she says if she gets all her packing done.
When she gets there its .. a surprise party with all her classmates. Even the Fabulous Five. Beth even asks her for advice. She tells her to get out of the Media Club and take one of Mary’s classes. This gets Taffy all in her feelings and the Dreadful Alternatives play aa set. Taffy knows she’ll really miss Wakko and she tells Corey it’s the best party she ever went too and they kiss goodbye. She thinks no Hollywood movie could have ended better.!
My Thoughts: It took me a minute to get around to this one (even though it was the last one) because I thought it would be a repeat of the previous one. I thought this one would be about Taffy going back to Hollywood to start on the new series. Same people! Same drama between should I go with Raven or should I go with Corey. But it wasn’t *as* painful to get through as I thought it would be. In this one, I had a lot of thoughts about Mrs. Sinclair (not Taffy her mother). And I struggled with whether it was good or bad with what she was doing with Taffy. So, on one hand I know what it’s like to have mothers that kind of push you just a lil more than you want them too (just a lil bit) and DO I ever know what it’s like to wish you were “normal” so they’d let up. I GET IT!
But then I have this cousin, and her mother was A LOT like Mrs. Sinclair. She picked her college. She picked her profession and while I sure that growing up my cousin probably felt a lot like Taffy -because her mother so take charge even to the point if someone asked HER something her mother would answer- but I can tell you now that my cousin doesn’t hurt for ANYTHING! And it was probably because her mother was so aggressive. Every time you hear about her she’s going on this trip or going out to eat or buying this or that. She lives VERY WELL. So, in this regard I wish that I had a parent like that -that would have pushed and taken the reigns-. Maybe I’d be a little better off than I am now.
This was definitely a really good ending to this series! Everything worked out. Taffy found where she belonged. It worked out with Corey. She got the hot super star. She even made her peace with the Fab Five Rating: 7

As a kid every Saturday we went to Kmart, and every Saturday my mom would let me buy one thing, and it was ALWAYS a fabulous five book. (The cover looks like a spiral notebook cover... I thought that was very clever) I also managed to track down all the Taffy Sinclair books at a thrift store.
Taffy Sinclair is such a misunderstood character. She was definitely not the nicest person, but I think a lot of that stemmed from insecurity.
I wonder if this series is still at my parents I would definitely read them again. I remember in the Taffy books Melanie was chubby and it make references to her eating brownies and then one day she was like NO i don't want the brownie... and then she got skinny. This is a very vague memory... so don't quote me on this one, what you CAN quote me on is that Taffy had a crooked bicuspid, and Jana ate cream cheese and jam sandwiches,... which I tried because of her and they were DIS-GUS-TING, and I never trusted her again.
In this installment, Taffy finds out how jealous her classmates are of her newfound fame. She has to decide whether to go back to Hollywood to star in a series based on her film or stay home with her normal life. Taffy really grows up a lot in this book.
