Dreams of Bali

Rate this book
Work, power, and success are the idols attorney Madison Barnes worships, and she’s never allowed anything, or anyone, to interfere with attaining them—except for her younger sister Dee. To help her sister out, Madison reluctantly agrees to spend a weekend with Dee’s closest friend, a smart-ass troublemaker Karlie Henderson. To Madison’s consternation, she discovers that the opinionated young college activist she remembers has turned into a wildly popular romance author and an attractive, exciting woman she can’t quite keep out of her thoughts.

Karlie's life is in complete upheaval. Depressed and troubled, she's not looking forward to spending a weekend trying to be polite to her best friend's arrogant older sister. Memories of their past encounters leave both women unprepared for the different kinds of sparks that arise when they spend a day together on Madison's yacht. Suspicious of Madison's motivations, Karlie has no choice but to return home and try to move on with her life—but the damage has already been done, and the consequences may be deadly.

C.J. Harte has lived in many places while growing up, mostly military towns. She was born in New York and still has family there. She completed her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Florida with her family cheering when she graduated with her doctoral degree. They suspected she was a perpetual student and were finally able to breathe a sigh of relief.

The college years were the years of civil rights and anti-war protests. She dipped a toe in activism and was soon immersed in women’s and human rights issues: organizing, campaigning, and marching. She developed a passion for equality that drives her today. She discovered there are many ways to be share that activisim. When she moved out to Wyoming she joined a GALA Chorus and let music speak for her. She is the co-lyricist for the musical “Am I Blue” written especially for The Rainbow Chorus, Ft. Collins, Co.

Words have always held a special magic for C.J. Her parents were great story tellers and she quickly learned the importance of a well-told tale. C.J. now lives and writes from her Wyoming home where she lives with her four-footed friends, looking out at the mountains and blue sky. Each day is an adventure and provides fodder for another story. (from the publisher's website)

I have mixed feelings about this one. While I really like these love/hate relationships, I kind of found this one too superficial. The description above is about as specific as the actual plot, the rest is either sex or some suspense. I found Madison's character too arrogant and self-centered. There were almost no redeeming qualities, instead I felt sorry for her. She's all about power and control when really she's just reckless. Weird thing for me, because I respect character flaws. Karlie, well... I don't think I got to know her much. Don't get me wrong, it's an entertaining book, it just pushed most of my buttons.

I'm very leary about trying new authors. My favorites are Radclyffe and Susan X. Meagher. I decided to give this author a try even though the reviews on "Magic of the Heart" weren't spectacular. Dreams of Bali is an incredible read. The characters were well developed and the author gave just enough back story to be helpful, but not too much as to be repetitive and boring. The book grabbed me and I couldn't put it down until I finished it. It is a book about conquering your own demons to begin trusting again. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventure and romance.

Must admit to judging this book by its cover - I don't like the cover so never bought it - until it was on a $2.99 sale. Now I really know why we should not judge a book by it's cover! It was a very very good read.
Once I started I was hooked, thinking it was going to be another typical romantic novel, but the little bit of drama satisfied me enough to realy enjoy it much more than I thought I would.

Nothing like I expected just by judging from the title, I was expecting a mainstream romance of hate turns love but instead C.J Harte totally blow my mind and expectation. Loving this book. A LOT!!!
