The New York Times best selling SF manga series continues
Welcome to a world where mysticism and science collide, and supernatural powers are derived from either science or religion. At the heart of this world is Academy City, an advanced metropolis whose population is comprised mostly of students. The majority of students are enrolled in the city’s "Power Curriculum Program," where they must learn to master their latent psychic powers. Out of several million students, only seven are deemed powerful enough to have Level 5 status.
Meet Mikoto Misaka, the third most powerful Level 5 esper in Academy City. Together with her best friend Kuroko Shirai and the other members of Judgment, a student-run law enforcement agency, Mikoto delves deep into the dark heart of the scientific sprawl she calls home, and uncovers secrets she wishes she hadn’t!
I read this in two sittings a few days apart from each other which may be why I did not enjoy it as much. It felt a little tedious to me. The pace, the plot, the artwork, it all felt pretty average. I will be continuing to read it, and have most of the volumes available at my library checked out, because I do want to know what happens next and where the story will go.
I started noticing one thing about this series that really started to bother me. Most of the characters are female. The main character is female so she's always fighting female enemies. I think that's incredibly stupid, and I seriously hope it changes in future volumes.
... Accelerator, d*^n you. You've been killing all those girls, just so you can get to some stupid level 6?!?! Seriously, dude?!?! And why, oh why did those scientists want to make those clones in the first place? I mean, why Oneesama? I know she's a level 5, but there are six more, so why her? And those four girls, I don't get them. What's their story? Hmm... More to digest.
Significantly thicker than previous volumes, Railgun 5 is essentially a single long action sequence. Misaki tries to take out the group that's been cloning her, but they call in another Level 5 and her hench girls. Two hundred some pages of fighting ensue.
