With more than 150 million products in print and several NYT bestsellers, Max Lucado is America's bestselling inspirational author. He serves the Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, where he lives with his wife, Denalyn, and their mischievous mutt, Andy. His most recent book published in August 2024 and is titled What Happens Next.
I take my hat off to Max Lucado for this series of books. It brings the whole concept of God's love home to little ones in such a special way that adults benefit from it too. Leonie (for some reason) cannot stop looking at the page where Palladin gets lost and sits on the ground crying. Heinze's illustration shows that Shaddai is coming in the distance, so Leonie whispers: "He's coming!" after which we have to go to the next page and then she'll stare at the image of Shaddai with Palladin in his arms. She'll hug herself at this point and say "Trösten" (comfort) and then look and look and look at it. What is it that fascinates her so? She also only wants to see the illustrations of Mole crying in The Wind in the Willows, holding out a hankie to the picture and telling us the story over and over again ... I digress! Because I love you encourages young and old to find out more about who "Shaddai" really represents and brings us closer to our faith in Him.
Indirectly, it teaches children that God loves his creation.
God sets boundaries for people to protect them like this man built a wall to protect the children in his village. If God wants to prevent us from wrong doing, He can, but that not what He wants...He wants us to have a free will. Similarly, this man made holes in the wall to teach the children how to control their inner voices.
...and when they make mistake God is ready to help...like this man who was ready to help Paladin when he needed him.
I absolutely loved this book. It has such a wonderful message that everyone can learn from. It taught that we can always come back if we go astray. The man in the story is very similar to Christ and I could relate to the little boy. He wanted to see what is on the other side of the wall even though he was told it wasn't safe. Often times people have to learn the hard way. It also showed that Christ is always looking out for us even before we call out to Him.
“Because I Love You” is such a beautiful children’s book designed to show the extent of God’s love.
In this story, a wise man named Shaddai (symbolizing God) created a beautiful village for children to live in and be protected and loved by Him. He promises to always be there for them, to guide and protect them, but tells them there is danger outside the wall of the village and they must not stray outside it.
One day, a young boy named Paladin, despite the instruction of Shaddai and the small voice inside, let’s his curiosity rule and sneaks out through a hole he discovers in the wall. Will Shaddai hear him when he cries out? Will He always be there to love, guide, and protect him as He promised, even when he goes astray?
I just love this story. It paints a lovely picture of how much God loves us. He loves us so much and is always there for us if we only turn to Him. And I must say, the nostalgic illustrations are incredible. The lifelike artwork is so detailed, beautifully illuminating the atmosphere of the village and the infinite love Shaddai shows the children.

In a faraway land a group of children lives with Shaddai, a wise man who loves them dearly. Shaddai builds a wall to protect the children and keep them safe from the dangers beyond their village but Paladin a curious young lad finds himself lost on the other side, despite Shaddia’s warnings. Paladin, alone and afraid wonders if Shaddai loves him enough to come to find him, not knowing that Shaddai had set out to bring him home even before Paladin knew he was lost.
Because I Love You, is a wonderful story about the power of unconditional love. The message to children (and even adults) is that that rules and boundaries are for their protection, along with the reminder that even when they do cross that line that their Shaddai, be it their God, parent or true friend will always love them and come and find them.
This is a sweet story - an allegory or parable - of God's love for us. It shows how God loves us so much that He allows us to make our own decision to obey Him or not. Shaddai built a wall of safety around a wonderful village he had built for the children. He knew there would be curious minds, and he didn't force anyone to stay, but once outside the wall they would see their need of him. Lovely illustrations.
This book was one of Megan's favorites when she was about 2 years old, and one of our family favorites. I've read it to all my children many times throughout the years we've had it. The artwork is beautiful, and it's worth owning purely for the pictures, if not for the loving message of the story! It's truly been a favorite book in our home! In fact, I should buy a new one since our current copy is so beat-up.
Touching lyrical prose to teach us about God’s Love
This author tugs at my heart every book he writes. With delightful metaphors and illustrations to lead us through the emotions of our walk with Jesus, and with rich characters we can identify with, the journey leads us to a deeper relationship with God. Thank you for sharing these stories.
A beautiful story about God's love for us and how he gave us freewill to choose whether to follow Him or go our own way. It also shows how, no matter what, God will always come find us even when we stray.
a simplified yet creative telling of one of the most powerful Christian messages
A story that young children and mature adults will wonderfully benefit from! Lucado helps us to understand the virtue and significance of free will in relation to God’s love
Lovely. Kiddo didn't pick up on the meaning as quickly as she did with other Lucado books but she loved it once she understood. First reading she also had me peek ahead to make sure Palladin would be all right.
I love Max Lucado's way of telling stories so simply. He shows the faithfulness of God's Love in this book easily and beautifully. The story uncomplicates a topic that we tend to complicate.
Illustrations are beautiful. The story was a bit too predictable as it makes the comparison to how God gives us free will but also comes to rescue us when we ask.
Timeless illustrations and a beautiful reflection of Gods unending love for us. We are free to choose but we are not free from the consequences of our choices.
This book tells about a "creator" who made the best place for his children. He built a wall to keep them safe and told them not to go through it. One of the boys did go through it and got trapped on the other side. The "creator" already knew though. He knew to open another hole, he knew before the boy cried for help and he was on the way there before he knew he was in danger. He is always watching out for us because he loves us. I love this book. The message that it has about God loving us no matter what and he is always a step ahead of us. He knows everything even before it happens. This is such a powerful book. I'm not sure if you could use this in a public school setting due to religion being all in the book, but for a private Christian school this would be excellent to read and talk about this in the Bible.
