Vickie Howell is the host of the tv show, Knitty Gritty. There is a good section on learning how to knit. 25 projects to keep you busy from hats to socks to blankets and more.
I was fairly unimpressed with this book. The patterns are, for the most part, not particularly attractive, nor are they all that original. Howell also has an inordinate fondness for novelty yarns, which results in a lot of projects that are either fugly now or will look completely dated in a year or two.
Good things: The layout of the book is really nice -- very clean and easy to follow. The instructions seem to be well-written, and the portions of the book that discuss various techniques are accompanied by good illustrations.
This book offers a wide variety of things to knit up, from pillows to shrugs, to journal covers, you are sure to find something you'll like. I loved all the different yarns and textures they used. I saw 5 patterns that looked interesting and I'm going to store them in the back of my mind for later. I liked this book, it was bright, colorful and hip, you should check it out.
I wouldn've probably enjoyed this more as a beginning knitter--or if I were a couple years younger (and I'm not real old here...I guess I just dress old-fashioned?).
