Wilkerson's passionate call to a deeper walk of daily discipleship invites both committed and casual Christians to know Jesus as they've never known him before.
David Ray Wilkerson was an American Christian evangelist, best known for his book The Cross and the Switchblade. He was the founder of the addiction recovery program Teen Challenge, and founding pastor of the non-denominational Times Square Church in New York.
Wilkerson's widely distributed sermons, such as "A Call to Anguish", are known for being direct and frank against apostasy and serious about making the commitment to obey Jesus' teachings. He emphasized such Christian beliefs as God's holiness and righteousness, God's love toward humans and especially Christian views of Jesus. Wilkerson tried to avoid categorizing Christians into distinct groups according to the denomination to which they belong.
Wilkerson was killed in a car crash in Texas on April 27, 2011.
if i could give this book a 10 star or 100000 star rating, I WOULD! it was such a great read because of the conviction it created in my heart and the epiphanies and revelations it caused for me. i am DEFINETLY reading this again before the end of this year!

Prolog a1) “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Matthew 5:6, “I am the LORD your God, who [will] brought you up out of Egypt [material world!]. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.” Psalm 81:10

a2a) "See, this is a purely heavenly matter; even though we reveal it to you, you will fail to understand it! For normal people can never grasp what is purely heavenly, as their spirit is not yet free, but imprisoned by worldly matter. ... See, the Infant, as He is in His human nature, can by no means talk to you extensively as a natural human being! That He will be somewhat capable of in about a year's time. But His heart is full of the eternal almighty deity. Now if this Child speaks to you in a distinct and wise manner, it is not the Child visible to you that is speaking but the deity speaking out of the Child to your spirit that is awakened for this purpose. And you then hear the words as if the Infant visible to you is speaking. However, this is not the case; it is only the Deity, who is invisible to you, who is speaking to you! And what you believe you hear outwardly, you hear only within yourself; and this is the case with everyone who hears the Infant speak!" p. 6
a2b) "That it was ultimately the Lord's Will that the Gospel of James, already very distorted by then, was not to be included in the biblical canon can be inferred from the introductory words by Jakob Lorber THE CHILDHOOD OF JESUS Revealed by the Lord Jesus Christ to Jakob Lorber in 1843/44 in the newly-revealed text of the original Gospel of James: "James, a son of Joseph, has recorded all this; however, with time, it has become so distorted that it cannot be allowed to be included in the scriptures as authentic. I, however, will give you the genuine Gospel of James, but only from the abovementioned period onwards ('from the time Joseph took Mary'); for James had included the biography of Mary since her birth, as well as that of Joseph." In his commentary "The Apocrypha of the New Testament and the work of Lorber -"The Gospel of James-" and "The Childhood of Jesus'" the Catholic theologian Robert Ernst writes: "The text of the apocryphal Gospel of James and the amendments and revisions that the Lord dictated to Jakob Lorber merge in such a way as to create a coherent whole. The childhood of Jesus is narrated in such detail to give a well-rounded report, so that many puzzles that could not be solved even by the best exegetes appear to us in the clearest light.
This gospel narrates not only the miraculous events such as Mary's immaculate conception, the virgin birth, the worshipping by the shepherds and the three Magi, the flight from Herod to Egypt and the return to Nazareth after Herod's death, but the entire childhood of Jesus from the first day of His life until His twelfth year and can be earmarked as the most heartfelt and delightful of all the gospels. An irresistible charm emanates from this Child, a power that radiates love, wisdom and healing, which made everyone around, whether Jew or gentile, aware of the fact that here the most Divine entity had Himself become a human being, as had been promised to mankind since time immemorial. The Infant already talks and raises His hand in blessing while in the manger. Generally speaking, it might be difficult in the unilaterally rational times of today to accept this as a truthful account by James. Hence there is a preceding explanation here, which was given by an angel inTHE CHILDHOOD OF JESUS Revealed by the Lord Jesus Christ to Jakob Lorber response to the Roman governor's query on the reasons for the infant's "ability to speak" (chapter 129):.." of "THE CHILDHOOD - OF JESUS Revealed by the Lord Jesus-Jehovah by direct dictation to Jakob Lorber 1843/44" p-4-6 of 740, Introduction, free download http://www.jakob-lorber-australia.net... from https://www.jakob-lorber-australia.net/ ,("These revelations are part of The Second Coming of Christ, They are entirely consistent with the Bible.", see also a3) amazon.com , https://merkurpublishing.com/product/... https://de.scribd.com/document/572270... a4) Marius Petre: "MEET JAKOB LORBER", amazon.com

4) About a) audible.de "Are You Experiencing a Spiritual Famine? So is much of the church today. Watered-down messages and spiritual "fast food" fail to feed the hunger of those who truly seek the heart of God. What Christians need, according to David Wilkerson, is a confrontational message that will provoke them to righteousness-the message that Jesus alone can satisfy the hunger. Hungry for More of Jesus issues a passionate call to a deep walk of daily discipleship. It reminds us that Jesus wants to give the abundant life we long for; He wants to satisfy the hunger. But first we must seek to know God's heart and cry out against the sins that break it. This is a book of hope and inspiration, while at the same time an honest look at the cost of hungering for Jesus. This stirring book is for those who know Christ and are hungry to know Him better, and it is for those who want to know Him as they never have." https://www.audible.de/pd/Hungry-for-...
5) Reviews & opinions a) amazon.de/-/en 4,8, goodreads.com.4, 36 b) Jonathan Srock jonathansrock.com "David Wilkerson has been one of the most prophetic voices of our time. I have great respect for him, so I was interested to read Hungry for More of Jesus. The book is arranged in three sections: Feeding on Christ, The Cost of Hungering, and God Meets Us in Our Hunger.
In the section on Feeding on Christ, Wilkerson weaves his thoughts on the stories of men like Jesus, Enoch, David, Elijah, and others to express the challenge and our search to fully dwell with Jesus. He does not approach this as an easy task. It is a challenge for us to take the time to feed on Jesus and His teaching.
In the second section, “The Cost of Hungering,” the author focuses on the cost of going all the way with God. He has a chapter devoted to the fact that we will be tested by God to see if we are truly hungry for Him. We will be sifted as God’s saints.
Life will not be as easy as we would want it to be. He also says that we will learn how to sympathize with one another. We can count on other Christians who are going through the same ordeal is. We can put our trust in God because He is greater than our troubles. He gives examples from his ministry in New York City, people hd helped ministered to through their troubles.
In the last section called God Meets Us in Our Hunger, he describes the year is people have wasted when they did not know the Lord. God will restore those years and make them more profitable for God.
I really liked his chapter on the lovingkindness of God. A lot of times we don’t realize how gracious and loving God is. He said he struggled with God’s lovingkindness because he was more of a person who was better at condemning himself and others. He says that we are not alone in this walk. God is with us and He will help us to be faithful to Him. He ends the book by talking about the greatness of Jesus. Throughout the book, he covers many aspects of hungering for Jesus and uses personal experiences to illustrate his points.
David Wilkerson does not disappoint in this book. It is full of wisdom and guidance for going through trials. I can see why people say he is a prophetic voice for our time. He doesn’t sugarcoat anything he talks about. He is real with the reader and I will probably read this book again. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to hear the truth of the Christian walk, that it is not easy. But God gives us the ability to be faithful to Him no matter what we suffer and face in this world. It is a challenging but challenge that encouraging message" https://jonathansrock.com/hungry-for-...
c) MaryAnn Ward, 2018 maward.ca "Hunger is the signal telling us we are running out of essential fuel! In the natural, it starts when our stomach is empty but quickly messages the brain to activation. I may be able to ignore my stomach, but it is much more difficult to ignore my thoughts. Do I as acutely sense spiritual hunger? How do I respond when I’m hungry? Hunger is the feeling of weakness or discomfort caused by lack of food. It triggers the desire to eat or crave food. Am I hungry for more of God? Do I choose to satisfy my spiritual desire through Him or other sources.
Hungry for more! At times after finishing a pleasant meal and feeling fully satisfied, if I catch a glimpse of some sweet delicacy I impulsively want more. How about you?
This is normal! God made us to always be on the lookout for more; He has designed us to never be empty. The Hungry are Fed
Heidi Baker, missionary to Mozambique, often affirms “The hungry are always fed.” The hungry, in desperation, push to the front of the line. They will not be refused!
“The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD will praise him – may your hearts live forever.” Psalm 22:26
Feast instead of famine! God has allowed us to recognize natural hunger through the discomfort of painful hunger pangs. If we ignore our bodies long enough hunger actually subsides. The same is true spiritually. He has also built within us an awareness of spiritual longing and hunger.
Hunger ignored has a price tag; vital organs can be irreparably damaged. We cannot safely ignore spiritual hunger either. Hungry?
The Spirit [SPARKLE in our heart!] within us [Meister Eckhart, Max Seltmann, Jakob Lorber, Kurt Eggenstein] is constantly inviting us to enter the Lord’s Presence and feast in His abundant provision. There are no shortcuts to resting, waiting, worshiping, or meditating on the Bible. Junk food goes beyond chips, coke, or a bit of chocolate. Time can never be regained! How we spend our minutes forms life patterns shaping our identity.
The unceasing demands of our physical bodies and fleeting attractions can be the greatest hindrance to wholesome feeding of the Spirit. “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other…” Galatians 5:16-17
Feed the Spirit what is good! We will either reach for what is good and truly satisfies, or what temporarily tastes and feels good. Daily we choose!
Jesus The Example Let’s contemplate this verse. “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness…” Matthew 4:1 There can be unrealistic expectation that faith will be a pleasant journey of “always full”. Not so! The Spirit purposefully led Jesus to a wilderness of prolonged hunger. In the place of hunger, what Adam lost in the fall Jesus began to reclaim.
After forty days of hunger the Tempter comes! His timing is usually the same for us as well. When hungry, angry, lonely, and tired, halt! This is a place of vulnerability. Jesus, the Living Word, stood His ground against every assault of the evil one.
“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4 Bread will never satisfy our deepest hunger! Neither will lust, money, power or position! Our relentless deepest hunger is satisfied in God alone.
“The key to Christian living is a thirst and hunger for God.” John Piper When we go to God for every need to be met, we too will experience supernatural provision. One of the names for God is Jehovah Jireh. It means “the LORD will provide”, or “the LORD our Provider.” Provider is who He is!
In the Lord alone is provision for all we need! Our hunger is meant to draw us to The One who provides. In Christ Alone In the Beatitudes, Jesus states, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Matthew 5:6 Jesus gives us a life-giving promise. Not only is He the Lord our Provider, He is the Lord our Righteousness! Ultimate filling is complete in Him. Our personal wilderness journeys are ultimately meant to accentuate our hunger. The hot dusty road heightens and stresses our hunger and thirst for more of Him. It is a good thing!
Without hunger pangs, we would not survive. Are you hungry? I hear it all around me! I see it among the young and the old! People of every nationality, demographic and generation, crying, “More, Jesus! More of You!” The hunger is increasing, and it is good.
"Open wide your mouth and I will fill it." People are turning their hearts and eyes from temporary satisfaction to ultimate fulfillment. It is beautiful! Prayer rooms are filling up!
“I am the LORD your God, who [will] brought you up out of Egypt [material world!]. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.” Psalm 81:10 God journeys with us in the wilderness, bringing us through to the other side. He invites us to “open wide our mouths”. Don’t expect a crumb from our generous God! Open wide your mouth! May faith arise in each of us for more. God is anxious to satisfy our hunger; “I will fill it!”
There is no need to look elsewhere. “I will fill it!” The Sound of Hunger The birds outside my window rouse me at three in the morning. Long before the sun breaks the darkness of night, pangs of hunger stir little nests with cries for more. One hungry little chick has an ability to awaken an entire nest. The feathered chatter shifts from nest to nest until the whole community is alive with the sound of awakening.
Let us take a lesson from these little feathered ones, we can never be too greedy for more of God; “open wide (your) mouth”. More Reading: Rivers of Living Water From Within – The Holy Spirit" https://maward.ca/2018/05/28/hungry-m...
6) Citations (reviewed book): a) S. 249-51 "As we hunger in our hearts for more of Jesus, He will apply His living power to our dead circumstances. We will not cry out to God in our trouble, hoping He will answer before it is too late. We will not turn into mourners when it appears that the answer has not come. We will not tremble before the power of the devil, as if he has won the victory-as if Jesus has lost and the devil has won! When things go from bad to worse we will not ever say, "That's it! It's too late, it's all over. For some reason, the Lord has chosen to let this happen. He is not going to rescue this situation."
Some may think that this final statement appears noble. But it is not enough to love, serve and worship God only to the point of hopelessness. We must trust Him when all our hope seems gone, when it looks as if we will never land a job or see our loved ones saved, when things are piling up on all sides and it appears humanly impossible to go on. If Jesus walked into your present situation, how would He find you? And how would you react to Him? Would you still grieve? Would your heart still be in turmoil? Or would you say to Him, "Lord, it looked hopeless. I was about to give up but I know You are the same today as You were in Jairus' day! You can heal this problem. You can bring life out of death." And, when Jesus finally does work your miracle, will you be found on the outside with the scoffers or on the inside among His faithful circle? The faithful were there to see Jesus at work. And that is where we all should want to be- -on the inside, the faith side!
Our faith must hold that Jesus' power goes beyond the point of death. We must look directly into the face of all that is lifeless and proclaim, "Jesus never gives up on the dead! He has never been more willing to show His power than He is right now..."
Despite visiting Times Square Church in 2000 and reading loads of Wilkerson's sermons i didn't discover this amazing book until recently and definitely recommend as one of those books you can feast upon in His prescence. i can't believe you can buy it for only a pound - so get your copy now if you want to go deeper with Him. I'm re-reading it immediately!
Read it years ago. Although times change, the principles of God's Word and His truth never change and are practical and transformative in any age. I still refer to the book in thought and teaching from time to time.
This book quite literally convicted the hell out of me. This book is for the hungry and thirsty, but mostly for the lukewarm Christian, the easily offended Christian, the "on the fence" Christian and the atheist Christian. Wilkerson will stir a revival in your heart. Will always recommend this one.
This was a great book, I love Wilkerson. I would go back and read this one again, I had to rush through it my husband was driving me crazy wanting to read it too.
