Night Moves has been sitting in my books to read pile for a long time now... and honestly part of me wishes I would have left it there.
Without spoiling the plot let me explain..... I am a fan of HelenKay Dimon's books so I was surprised at how little I enjoyed this one. I kept finding myself getting bored with the story and wanting to skip a head. Which is something I doubt I have ever done with one of HKD's stories.
So not only was I bored and wanting to skip a lot of pages I was simultaneously wanting to hit the main characters upside the head. Some of the chemistry between Maura & Liam was believable but most of the time I was taking their chemistry, their actions and the entire plot on a leap of faith.
I knew from the cover that "Night Moves" was going to have a fair dose of Mystery because its from the Harlequin Intrigue's line, but I was surprised to find how the intimate scene was handled. Its a blush scene which is fine but it came across to me as a something that had to be tacked on because of the book was being published as Harlequin and most readers assume that it would have some kind of "bowchickawowow" scene.
And unfortunately by the end of the story I was left with that dreaded "eh" feeling. You know that feeling you get when you have read worse books so you don't hate it but at the same time you didn't like it either. That is how I feel about this one. Lot of potential but doesn't live up to it.
*Genre Blush Mystery -(FYI Blush is a suggestive romance where the love scenes are not graphic.)
There is a part of me that feels like a "tool" whenever I say I didn't enjoy something.. Because I love to read and I really do appreciate and acknowledge all the hard work that goes into creating the book I just read... so just in case this review bothers someone who had something to do with that process.... uh sorry? kinda... sorta...
I think I liked this even more than Dimon's first Intrigue. Liam and Maura were equals, with different but complimentary strengths. Obe thing that strikes me about both her Intrigues is that both heroes come across as himan, rather than superhuman. They feel beat up, tired, achy, and not just on the last page. One scene made me laugh but also struck me as so sweet. "She probably thought her running commentary on ther location was helpful. It was driving him nuts." yet he doesn't tell her to be quiet because he knows she's been through a lot and he is so grateful that she's ok. For her part, Maura isn't afflicted with TSTL. She asks for help and isn't afraid to let Liam protect her when she thought she needed it.
I also liked that Spanner wasn't typed. I thought he might have been going down that path, but Dimon clearly gives him a brain, too.
I can't imagine how hard it is to write nonstop action, keep a decent plot going, and build a romance at the same time, all in a very short page count. Dimon does a good job of it. Looking forward to more.

I liked this book. The story hung together without any of the characters needing to make any stupid decisions to make it work. But it didn't stand out well enough for me to feel the need to seek out more of this author's books. Since this is the second book of hers and neither had me doing handstands, I probably won't pursue this author's books.
