A Survival Kokoda is not only the revealing story of one man's personal odyssey, but it also contains a wealth of first-hand information for those preparing to travel to Papua New Guinea to walk the Kokoda trail.
Divided into ten, compelling and informative chapters, this remarkable book also contains numerous colour photographs documenting the author's own experiences, as well as a comprehensive checklist of the equipment needed for a successful Kokoda trek.
Balancing a mix of humour and raw emotion, Stephen McCormack has combined his own experiences in overcoming adversity with many invaluable tips and suggestions to create an easy-to-read reference guide that is a must for anyone planning their own journey to this very important part of Australia's history.
Declaration of interest: I have known Stephen since he was about six years old.
In the acknowledgements, the author thanks me, saying that without my help and guidance, the book might never have been. He was once one of my students, and I encouraged him, that is true, but he has produced a marvellous book. I know the lower reaches only of the Kokoda Track, but he has walked it, as many young people are now doing, and he tells it how it needs to be told.
It's not a walk in the park, and it's beyond me at my age, though Doc Vernon was probably older than I am now when he trotted up it in 1942 to lend a hand. I'm not Doc Vernon, so I'll restrict myself to reading about it, and basking in the reflected glory of having played a small role in getting a good book out where it can be seen.
