This is a review of the book rather than the man. I think the amazing accomplishments of this individual in a city like New York is quiet phenomenal. If you are an academic attempting to understand the inside story on fighting civil rights, or a law student trying to find material to demonstrate the importance of the media in making cases work for or against you, this is an excellent piece. Rubenstein's approach to fighting difficult cases is something that should be studied and applauded.

As for the book, I gave it fewer than 5 stars primarily because it really requires an intelligent reader. If you are less aware of civic rights disputes in the Northeast, this book may lack adequate color for one to appreciate what the stories were and how they played out. In less than 200 pages, it covers 5 cases that probably have enough detail to be the content of a single book each. The background story, the emotional feel of the players, the impact on the public, etc are glossed over relative to other types of biographies. This is perfect if you're hoping to get a general overview or obtaining research for a larger project. For those that are look to the categories of biographies/autobiographies as entertainment reading, you may find it slightly lacking.

Still, a very interesting read and one that is worth perusing, particularly if you live or have lived in New York City.
