If you're curious about the jealous virgin Mary or what Joan of Arc's trial transcripts said, this is the book to look at. The collection of original medieval hagiography covers both a broad span of time and a wide range of saint-types. The translations are easy to read and the introductions provide good insight into the social issues of the period and of the hagiographers. In some cases segments are taken from longer documents, but as an introduction to saints' lives, this is an excellent start.
