About the author

Agustina Bessa-Luís was born in Vila Meã (Amarante) in 1922. Her father's family was from the north of Portugal and her mother was Spanish.

She lived her childhood and teenagehood in the region of Douro, Minho and then Coimbra in 1948. She married Alberto Oliveira Luís in 1945 and after 1948 she moved to Oporto.

She started writing at the age of 16 and in 1950 she published her first novel, Mundo Fechado. In 1952 her talent was recognized with the award Delfim de Guimarães, for her book Sibila, which also received the award Eça de Queirós the next year.

In 1958, she gave her first steps in theatre, writing the play O inseparável.

Between 1986 and 1987 she was the director of the diary O Primeiro de Janeiro in Oporto. Between 1990 and 1993 she was the director of D.Maria II Theatre in Lisbon and a member of the Alta Autoridade para a Comunicação Social.

She is a member of the Academie Européenne des Sciences, des Arts et des Lettres in Paris, of the Academia Brasileira de Letras and the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa, being also recognized at Ordem de Sant'Iago da Espada (1980), Medalha de Honra da Cidade do Porto (1988) and degree of "Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres", given by the French government (1989).

Various works have been translated in various countries and some were adapted to the cinema, such as Francisca, Vale Abraão and As Terras de Risco by Manoel de Oliveira. Her novel As Fúrias was adapted to the theatre by Filipe La Féria.

At the age of 81, Agustina Bessa-Luís received the Camões Award, considered the most important portuguese award.

Es miembro de la Academia Europea de las Ciencias, las Artes y las Letras de París, de la Academia Brasileña de las Letras y de la Academia de las Ciencias de Lisboa. Sus numerosos libros le han valido las más importantes distinciones, como la de Santiago da Espada (1980), la Medalla de Honor de la Ciudad de Oporto (1988) o el grado de Oficial de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras del gobierno francés (1989). En 2004 recibió el galardón literario más importante en lengua portuguesa, el Premio Camôes.

“O Mosteiro” appears as a crossing of the stories of São Salvador de Travanca and its monastery, narrating the stories and memories of its chronological journey. All in a very concrete period of time, in the 1980s, revealing an interest in knowing and unravelling the past to understand the present. Again, the strength of the feminine character resonates in the provincial buzz, which so well fills existential and human analysis, in addition to all its relations with the earth and the world. This is how Belche, narrator and historian of causes and memories, is the face that Agustina Bessa-Luís takes on for the expression of her literary record, so characteristic and singular, that she defines it as a prominent figure of writing in Portuguese on Portuguese soil.

Agustina é expoente máximo da Literatura portuguesa. Este livro de Portugal e dos portugueses retrata na perfeição as personalidades e caracteres das classes sociais. Quem quiser saber um pouco da história do rei Dom Sebastião, tem aqui muita coisa interessante. Agustina tem olho de psiquiatra. Esta senhora é uma mente brilhante, rica em História de Portugal. Uma cultura inacreditável. Do melhor que há em Portugal.
Agustina is the greatest expression of the Portuguese literature. This book of Portugal and the Portuguese portrays perfectly the personalities and characters of social classes. Anyone who wants to know a little of the story of King Dom Sebastião, there is lots of interesting things here. Agustina has a psychiatrist eye. This lady is a brilliant mind, rich in history of Portugal. An incredible culture. The best that is in Portugal.

Que maravilha. Como de costume, uma prosa imaculada e um tratado sobre a psicologia e relação entre personagens do vale do Douro: a tensão entre ricos e pobres, homens e mulheres, conservadores e progressistas. Mas, como intervenientes nesta história, temos a família Teixeira: várias irmãs e um irmão, Salvador, bem como o seu filho, Belchior, o personagem principal, que, já em adulto, escreve um livro sobre a biografia de D. Sebastião. E é incrível. O final do livro é particularmente apoteótico, no sentido em que lhe puxa o lustro, pela maneira como a Agustina faz o paralelo entre Belchior e D. Sebastião e a tias Teixeira com a corte que rodeava o rei. O título refere-se a um antigo mosteiro que fica perto da propriedade dos Teixeira, e que entra no livro como a luz que se acende depois de todas as outras se apagarem, já que, ao contrário do país que mergulhava numa melancolia incapacitante após o desaparecimento do rei, o mosteiro renasce e prospera durante a crise dinástica. É um livro cheio de sombras e luz. Enfim, como a vida.

Escrita sibilina e oracular, neste romance confluem várias linhas narrativas num só espaço, o de um antigo mosteiro. A acção decorre durante o século XX e por ela perpassam vários acontecimentos, como a Segunda Guerra Mundial, a Guerra Colonial e as mudanças sociais e económicas no Portugal emigrante.
Em simultâneo, Belchior redige o seu livro sobre D. Sebastião, tomando os seus conhecidos como os artistas usam modelos para os seus quadros. Mas, no fundo da narrativa estão as irmãos Teixeira, tias de Belchior, e as verdadeiras garantes da subsistência da família.

Uma leitura como uma renda, enrolada, enrolada. Por vezes clara e simples, outras hermética e mística. A história da família Teixeira entrecruza-se com a história da vila e do seu mosteiro e encontra paralelos na vida de D. Sebastião, objeto do livro que o narrador está a escrever.
