Motherhood sometimes seems as though it's not all it's cracked up to be. Sleepless nights, baby fat, encrusted bits of spit up clinging to my clothes and hair...not exactly what I'd pictured it as being. Sometimes I wonder where the real Virginia went - the person I used to be before I was just someone's wife or mother. Now I find out that a hot young girl is after my husband. Perfect. This is the life of a mother. It's real, and it's definitely nothing like a baby ad.
Reese Reed has written a wonderful debut novel that is at once a one-sit read and a book that will follow you around for days after finishing it. There are many strengths to this novel; one is the voice Reed uses. Her diction is very familiar and makes us feel as if we know her main character from the first page. Another main strength of this book is the characterization. The heroine is someone with all the same problems and insecurities faced by all women. She is a woman, overwhelmed with motherhood after the birth of her second child, who makes us cheer her on as she realizes what she really wants and fights to claim it. The book also has a fast-paced plot and is filled with those everyday mishaps that are much funnier when they happen to someone else. I found myself laughing uncontrollably at several points.
The book does not let any reader down. It has shades of romance, motherhood, suspense, coming of age (for lack of a better term - I think I really mean coming into her own) and chick lit. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a quick, uplifting read!
I am excited to say that this is one book that kept me laughing from beginning to end. It often seems that the life of a stay-at-home mom is rather trivial, but Reese Reed lets you know what being a mom is really about. Reed does not attempt to cover up the less than glamorous sides of motherhood, in fact for any mother-to-be Childproofed could be considered a necessary expose of motherhood. However, in between the diaper changes, sleepless nights and bodily changes that come with motherhood, Reed manages to find the humor. Childproofed is an easy read, it is funny and truthful and it is sure to entertain anyone who has ever experienced the transformation of motherhood.
This book was a quick and easy read as it's mostly comprised of dialogue. If you're looking for stellar writing or unpredictability, this book isn't for you. Although this book has potential, it was a very predictable read. It's like Cool-Whip, low on taste and nutritional value; okay while you're eating it, but barely remembered once you swallow your last bite. I think this book would be perfect for non-readers looking for a beach read or chicklit-type fiction, too titillating for YA readers, though.
This author shows promise but over all the story was rushed. It could have been better, with some history of the characters and plot development. Good start however, and cute short story. The end was predictable, but still a good ending.
