Barbara Jefferis AM was the author of eleven books but she is best known for the award set up in her honour. The Barbara Jefferis Award was set up by her husband John Hinde with a $1million bequest to create an annual prize of at least $35,000 AUD. It is awarded to "the best novel written by an Australian author that depicts women and girls in a positive way or otherwise empowers the status of women and girls in society." In 1986, Jefferis was made a member of the Order of Australia for services to literature, and in 1995, she was recognised with an Australia Council Emeritus Award.
