Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos) is an American pianist and singer-songwriter. She is married to English sound engineer Mark Hawley. Together they have one child, Natashya "Tash" Lórien Hawley, born on September 5, 2000.
Amos was at the forefront of a number of female singer-songwriters in the early 1990s and was noteworthy early in her career as one of the few pop performers to use a piano as her primary instrument. She is known for emotionally intense songs that cover a wide range of subjects including sexuality, religion and personal tragedy. Some of her charting singles include "Crucify", "Silent All These Years", "Cornflake Girl", "Caught a Lite Sneeze", "Professional Widow", "Spark", and "A Sorta Fairytale".
Amos had sold 12 million records worldwide as of 2005 and has also enjoyed a large cult following. Having a history of making eccentric and at times ribald comments during concerts and interviews, she has earned a reputation for being highly idiosyncratic. As a social commentator and sometimes activist, some of the topics she has been most vocal about include feminism, religion, and sexuality.
I'm using this as a placeholder for actually reading the Graphic Novel Album by various authors and artists, including Margaret Atwood and Neil Gaiman.
4 and a half stars. this is as amazing as the perfect cover promises. lyrics from each song from Tori Amos' 1992 album Little Earthquakes followed by a multi-page graphic art collaboration interpreting the song - sometimes literally using the lyric as text, sometimes developing a possible backstory for the lyrics, and sometimes riffing off the images, ideas, and sheer weight of the song. a labour of love and a perfect tribute to her seminal work from the vantage point of thirty years later. includes contributions from Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood, Bill Sienkiewitz, David Mack, Kelly DeConnick, and many many others.
I don’t read a lot of graphic novels but have loved the ones I’ve read so far and this is no exception. I pre-ordered this last year and forgot all about it until it arrived in December which was fun - I highly recommend pre-ordering just to have the fun “who sent me a book” surprise that comes with forgetfulness.
I have been a big Tori Amos fan since Little Earthquakes came out in ‘92 and am glad I had the CD because I would have worn a tape cassette out. It is super cool that she decided to collaborate and co-create this cool little book.
After this book was lost to the ravages of my misspent youth, it has finally been replaced. If you also like Tori and have at some point fantasized about bashing a Bosendorfer of your very own, this is the book for you.
