“A man on a mission…”

Greg Anderson is the founder of Cancer Recovery Foundation International, a global affiliation of national organizations whose mission is to help all people prevent and survive cancer.

Cancer Recovery Foundation focuses on the human services side of cancer. It does not fund clinical research or medical treatments. The Foundation provides adults with training and support for implementing whole-person cancer prevention and survival strategies. Children with cancer and their families are served through the Children’s Project. The Foundation has established affiliates in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany and France.

Greg Anderson was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer in 1984. He was given 30 days to live. Refusing to accept the hopelessness of this prognosis, he went searching for people who had lived even though their doctors had told them they were “terminal.” His findings from interviews with over 16,000 cancer survivors form the strategies and action points for what has become an international cancer survival movement.

Anderson is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading wellness authorities. He is the author of eight books which have been translated into 29 languages.

My thoughts about the book: Before I even read Greg Anderson's book I knew I would learn and receive something good and helpful from it because when it comes to the subject matter of the book, Cancer, "he has been there, done that" and come out a victor on the other side. So, when someone writes a book about any subject that appeals to me and they have lived it I want to read what they share whether I totally agree with them on all points concerning what they have written in their book or not because I know I can always learn something from every person I somehow connect with if I will but have my ears open to hear.

Greg's book, Cancer & The Lord's Prayer, is not a "genie in the bottle" sort of book/solution for the terribly devastating disease, Metastatic Lung Cancer, that Greg was diagnosed with...and pretty much given a "death sentence" for. No, his book is about "an ordinary Christian" who went through Cancer and during the process could "no longer settle for the rituals" of his faith; but rather, "reached out- and actually lived out (to the very best of his human ability though led by God and guided by his faith in Jesus) "the promises of Jesus." Once Greg had received the diagnosis of death from his doctor he, his family, and members of his church began to pray and pray fervently for his recovery. This by the way IS the first thing ALL Christians should do when facing a crisis or having a need of any kind. And, tt was during this process that the Lord in his infinite wisdom and mercy led Greg to what has been historically referred by the church through the ages to as "The Lord's Prayer." He shares in the book that he knew of the prayer and even knew it but in light of what he was going through he had to learn more about the prayer and why God was drawing him to it as he had. And so Greg began to study and pray "The Lord's Prayer" wanting to enter into that most sacred of places where he was speaking with God and God was listening and then speaking to him through the prayer."

Though the book Cancer & The Lord's Prayer is a small book in size consisting of only 95 pages, it is filled with so much spiritual insight and wisdom. In his very well written book, author Anderson reveals some very important aspects about prayer, our relationship with God and his son Jesus as well as praying "The Lord's Prayer." And no, Greg does not advocate praying the prayer like some sort of mystical mantra that you just repeat over and over again like some vain word...no...Greg takes us as the reader of his book much deeper than that into the heart of the prayer and what it means to truly pray it as our Heavenly Father would want us to.

A word of caution to the theological debaters and spiritual nit pickers in the church who are always on the prowl looking for something to debate and argue about as pertaining to faith in our Lord Jesus Christ... Greg did not write his book as a theological treatise concerning prayer or other important Bible Doctrine (and let me state I firmly believe doctrine and truth are of the most absolute importance to "Christians"), but that is not what this book has been written for or is about. Greg's book is about prayer, relationship, hope and getting to know God in a deep and intimate way that few "Christians" ever do. He refers to it in his book as "practicing the presence of God and enlarging His nature;" phrases others have referred to either in those exact words or similar words throughout church history.

Whether you have physical cancer or not, or if you have some degree of spiritual cancer that is keeping you from experiencing and enjoying the fullness of God's person, presence and power in your life and you are looking for a short book to read to help you in your faith journey, I recommend Greg's book, "Cancer & The Lord's Prayer" to you. I firmly believe that from reading it you will be blessed, encouraged in your personal faith and walk with the Lord and learn some valuable and helpful truths that will change you and your prayer life enabling you to not only pray more Biblically but also effectively. As the disciples of Christ asked the Lord may we all ask of him the same thing in light of reading author Greg Anderson's book, "Lord teach US to pray." Luke 11:1.
