A 60-year old Old Shatterhand receives several letters (amongst others from the sons of Old Surehand and Apanatschka), informing him that a monument will be build in honour of Winnetou, and inviting him for the unveiling. He decides to go and see what it's all about.
On the start of this journey crossing the no longer 'Wild West", he's accompanied by his second wife Klara and by his old friend Max „Maksch“ Pappermann. Later they meet with 'Young Eagle' and the sons of Santer. Furtheron he reconciled with several of his old enemies. In the end Old Shatterhand finds and reveals the true testament of his bloodbrother Winnetou.
Karl Friedrich May (also Karol May) was one of the best selling German writers of all time, noted mainly for books set in the American Old West, (best known for the characters of Winnetou and Old Shatterhand) and similar books set in the Orient and Middle East. In addition, he wrote stories set in his native Germany, in China and in South America.
May also wrote poetry and several plays, as well as composing music; he was proficient with several musical instruments. May's musical version of "Ave Maria" became very well known.
3.5 stars. This book suffers from the expectation it raises amongst those who enjoyed the Winnetou trilogy, since it is often advertised as a continuation, as Winnetou IV. Mostly, it is an attempt by Karl May to reconcile his earlier writing, especially his most popular character, with the reality of his later travels, visiting the places he had until then only encountered in his fantasy. As such, the familiar characters and places he revisits are seen through a distorted double vision, by the writer as well as the reader. There are some remnants of their youthful characters which at time violently compete with their more mature reinvention, settled and refurbished, but also less vibrant and struggling against the reality of the encroaching modern civilization.
Karl May tries to push his newly articulated pacifistic and philantropic philosophy, which represents not so much a departure from his earlier principles, but a change of narrative focus. Yet, he never quite manages to divorce himself from his earlier narrative techniques and favourite schemes. This novel is still very much a transitional work.
I am surprised how fast I managed to finish this book. It was not an easy start. The religious mania did make it really difficult to read. I am not a fan of how much god comes into the whole story. But overall, a nice enough finish to the story of Winnetou. Not as adventurous as the other part since it’s more a trip through a modern time than the old Wild West.
Been several years since I last read a book translated in Romanian and several more since the last such translation that wasn't nonfiction, plus that I was barely a teen, or perhaps even yet to cross that threshold, when I read the rest of the series and some other related works, back in the '90s, so can't compare and some of the complaints may be the result of this. However, I can clearly say that the first few chapters are a quite painful attempt to force philosophy, opinions and information on the reader by wrapping them in the thin veil of a story crafted from a mix of reality and the author's last, desperate attempt to rebuild the myth he had wrapped himself in through most of his life, perhaps for his own peace of mind more than anything else. Later, along with the unapologetic firm return to the familiar realm of imagination and the above-mentioned personal myth, the storytelling does improve, though the signs of trying too hard never go away, the dialogs remain so strained and forced that I'm not even sure they deserve being called amateurish and readers are likely to roll their eyes plenty of times, for those as well as other reasons. Still, the story does its job passably well overall, providing a conclusion, or perhaps another conclusion, as well as some amount of closure where necessary. Perhaps more importantly, however, while some of the views expressed may be questionable or even dangerous or simply wrong, many remain relevant and useful even now, over a century after the book was written... At least once they're separated from the author's ego and personal myth and properly adapted to current times and events.
akhirnya utang kbayar, seri terakhir :) sedikit lebih ngrasa d cramahin, tp te2p bagus, ad yg tsirat dr yg tsurat...... mungkinkah pdamaian draih dngan persahabatan, bukan kekerasan? bisakah suatu bangsa maju n bkembang dngan ttp mnghidupkan budaya lokal, mengakar pd sjarahnya, dngan smangat pluralisme n multi-kulturisme? Seri IV ini tampak ngewakilin visi KM tentang dunia, sayang endingnya bukan knyataan,,,
"...Belajarlah terbang! Belajarlah terbang!
sayangnya saya kurang suka buku keempatnya ini, agak kurang greget, hahaha. mungkin karena si old shatterhand-nya udah tua sih ya, jadi nggak banyak berantemnya,
ya sudahlah nggak papa, biar bagaimanapun winnetou tetap buku kesayangan saya :)
