New York. The city of opportunity. Steph accepted this job to find herself. She never expected to lose her daughter.
When her US work colleague is involved in a serious car accident, London-based Steph Knight is sent to New York to provide cover. After her recent divorce, it’s the perfect opportunity for a fresh start and for Steph to spend some time with her teenage daughter, Ellie, a gifted musician, before she leaves for university.
Soon after arriving, Steph meets Edward, a corporate lawyer, who leads Ellie to bartender Jack, a bioethics student on his summer break. As both relationships intensify, Steph begins to uncover a web of corruption within her company that seemingly reaches right to the top. Feeling increasingly threatened, she has no idea who she can trust. Not even the men they’ve fallen for are beyond suspicion.
And then the unthinkable happens. Ellie disappears.
When she receives a menacing text message, Steph learns Ellie has been kidnapped.
The clock is ticking. Ellie’s life is in danger. And so is Steph’s.
Terrified, far from home, and with no one to trust, Steph must draw on her inner strength to save her daughter… even if it kills her.
AJ Campbell is an Amazon USA top 40 bestselling author, who loves throwing characters into unbelievable situations and figuring it out from there. The result is psychological suspense novels full of twists, turns, and torment, with gasp-worthy endings. An avid hiker, AJ lives in the UK on the Essex / Hertfordshire border with her husband, sons, and cocker spaniel, Max. She is a Netflix junkie, a theatre tragic, and a wine and Asian food enthusiast.
Single mother, Steph Knight, is an auditor for an internationally prominent bank in London, England. Desperate for some distance from her recently divorced ex-husband and hoping to bond with her nearly 18 year-old daughter, she seizes the opportunity when her boss, Charles, asks if she’d be willing to temporarily go to their New York office and step into the shoes of her counterpart, Melissa. Recently in a serious car accident, Melissa has left in the middle of a critical investigation into suspected corruption and the trail is going cold. Charles relays that taking him up on his offer and successfully concluding the inquiry could be just the ticket to get that promotion she’s been after as well.
Within hours of landing in New York City, Steph’s eye is caught by older, devastatingly handsome Edward Millner. A corporate lawyer with a rival bank, he seems just as taken with her as she is with him. Despite knowing that she’s only going to be in the U.S. for a short time, she allows herself to fall head over heels for a man who almost seems too good to be true. On top of her own blossoming love affair, Steph’s daughter, Ellie, finds her own Prince Charming in bartender, Jack, and Ellie’s broken heart begins to beat again. But can Steph trust this older stranger with her only child? He is, frankly, just a stranger. But as she delves further into the potential corruption that may be occurring, Steph begins to wonder who she can really trust. How far could it reach? Her boss? The woman overseeing her investigation in New York? Perhaps even the Knight women’s newfound love interests?
Then the bottom of her world falls out from under her when she receives a sinister text message and attached video. Her exceptional, talented daughter has been kidnapped. She is sure of it. In a strange country surrounded by people she can’t trust, Steph is unsure what to do. Because the only way they say she’ll ever see Ellie again is if she stops looking into whatever is going on within the company. And time is running out as her child’s life hangs in the balance. Determined to rescue Ellie, she doubles down her investigation, because she knows it must be at the center of what is happening. And, while she may be terrified of what might happen to her daughter, a mother’s love just might be stronger than her opponent’s will. Even if she must sacrifice herself to save her child. What mother wouldn’t do that, after all?
Lies, secrets, never ending suspicion, corporate corruption, and the limitless strength of a mother’s love, The Wrong Key is a tour de force of the psychological thriller genre. Let’s start off with the twists, of which there are many, but it’s the first major one, delivered about a third of the way in, that showed me the author’s true mettle. Quite the doozy, it literally turned everything I was thinking on its head and had me second-guessing every conjecture I made from that point forward. Never a bad problem to have in a thriller.
Even the characters are strong, authentic, and delivered with just the right amount of flaws to seem genuine (like Steph and her outright naivety). Delivering serious topics such as divorce, corporate malfeasance, kidnapping, and loss of a loved one to name a few, Steph still demonstrated the raw power of a mother’s love. I did wonder, however, if she would really just turn off her overprotective steak because her ex-husband said she should. Especially considering they’re in a strange city in a foreign country…all on top of those unsettling situations. But, by the end, this didn’t bother me enough not to love the character (and the book). The only other aspect that gave me pause was the mildly over-played climax. Explained after it occurs, it’s all logical and seemingly realistic, but the thought of its believability was had nonetheless. There were, in my opinion, no other issues with the plot and I found myself entirely swept up, reading faster and faster to find out who would come out on top. David or Goliath?
All things considered, this a truly stellar novel. Fast-paced and unpredictable with twists that made me say “Wait, what?” in the best possible way, I can’t wait to read the rest of A.J. Campbell’s repertoire. If you love thought-provoking and compelling stories that keep you in ever increasing levels of suspense, I highly recommend reading The Wrong Key. After which, you’ll never look at covering for your boss the same way again. Rating of 4.5 stars.
Trigger warning: infidelity, near fatal car accident, financial crimes, death of a loved one, kidnapping, teenage pregnancy

A twisted, suspenseful, edge-of-your seat thriller! What starts out as a simmering slow burn as we get acquainted with the characters soon heats up to a boil and becomes completely unputdownable as everything goes wrong. Everyone is a suspect as you tear through the pages, seeking answers right along with Steph. With surprises around every corner, THE WRONG KEY, is a fun ride filled with strong female characters you’ll love to root for. AJ Campbell is once again proving herself to be a force in this genre and an author to watch!
Talk about a suspenseful thriller! AJ Campbell had me hooked right for the start with this page turner. I love it when I cannot see how a story will end, and throw in many a curveball and you have got me good. If you haven’t read this author before and you love face paced reads, get onto AJ Campbell books.
When Steph is asked by her boss to travel from the UK and work in the firms New York Office for a few months, Steph is hesitant. Her daughter is about to turn 18 and is waiting on her exam results. She wants to be there for her. But her daughter Ellie gets in the plane to NY with her mother for a trip of a lifetime. Mother and daughter both meet nice men and things are going well for a while…and then it all falls apart. Not going to tell you how but it does in a big way. They are both in danger and don’t know who to trust.
You just have to read it to find out. I could not read it fast enough, not knowing what was going to happen next. A fantastic read that I highly recommend.
Thanks to the author for sending me this book to read and having me on her blog tour.
Steph, an auditor, is asked by her boss, Charles, at Crayhorne to go to New York. Her friend, Melissa, has been injured and Steph is needed to step in as her equivalent. She doesn't want to leave the UK as she has her 17 year old daughter, Ellie, to think about. In the end, she decides to go with her daughter. Once they are there, Steph meets a nice man named Edward and Ellie meets a boy named Jack. Everything is going well until, Steph receives a call from Ellie that Edward is dead. Soon after that, Ellie is kidnapped. Steph is a mess. Will she see her daughter again?
THE WRONG KEY was a fast paced exciting thrill ride. I knew from the first few pages I was going to love this book, and I did. Steph was an amazing, strong character and I loved her. I had no idea what I would have done in her situation!! A.J. Campbell is a brilliant author. I loved the ending and I can't wait to read more of her future novels. I highly recommend getting a copy! 4.5 stars rounded up!
Many thanks to A.J. Campbell for my gifted copy and for having me on her book tour.

I really wasn’t sure what to expect from this author or this book as have not read any of her previous work…..it seems I have been missing out Right from the start this was exciting and drew me in quickly to an unfamiliar business world of ( in basic terms ) money and investment and what some people will do to make sure they keep getting more….this world is explained clearly and was really interesting and I actually learnt some things as well as being thrown into this addictive story The characters, good and bad,are strong and have meaningful roles and they really do absorb you into the action and mayhem that is unfurling constantly It was packed with danger and situations you didn’t know which way the outcome would go which kept me on my toes The description ‘thriller’ is 100% correct for this read and I thoroughly enjoyed every page
Steph, and her daughter Ellie, travel from London to NYC for Steph's job. She's an auditor, and she's sent to look at some of her firm's accounts. Working in banking myself, I was worried that talks of accounting and trades would be too much for me (I read to get away from work, not read about work) but AJ Campbell weaved an addictive story with some intense action that had me flying through the pages.
This book seemed so real, more than once I started to bring up the story to people in my family, stopping myself. It was intense, had some good twists and one was completely jaw dropping that I literally gasped. I didn't see it coming.
This is the my 2nd book by AJ Campbell and what I love about her books is that they are all substance and no fluff, making them fast addictive unputdownable reads.
Another winner by Campbell that will leave you on the edge of your seat! This was a twisty, suspenseful read that will lead you to flip thru the pages! Campbell’s writing is just brilliant and I will read anything she writes. Make sure to add this book to your TBR, you won’t be disappointed!
If there is one thing I know with complete certainty, it is the lengths I would go to for my kids, so Steph Knight was an easy character to step into.
A work trip to New York to conclude an investigation after her counterpart Melissa was injured in an accident, also means a chance to spend time away with her daughter Ellie. What could possibly go wrong? Well quite a lot as it happens…..
Since arriving in New York both have been spending time with new men, Steph with corporate lawyer Edward and Ellie with barman Jack. When Ellie is kidnapped at a picnic and Jack disappears can she even trust Edward with information? And what is going on with the changes in Melissa’s personality? Once her good friend she is now standoffish and frankly a bit strange.
The business spiel is easily explained so you don’t need to be a city whizz to understand it, you just need to know that someone is up to no good and Steph needs to find out who.
AJ’s books always have a protagonist that you can get behind and multi layering that goes behind the suspicious. That way you are never quite sure who to trust and there are a multitude of suspects here to choose from. Every time I thought I had it worked out, something happened to change my mind. One character I wanted to be good so badly and that made me realise how involved I had become.
Action packed with a stellar cast of characters this is as unpredictable as it is addictive.
I listened to this with Hoopla and read it with KU. So, are you looking for thr door key? Keep looking. Not much plot, money laundering and dead bodies everywhere. The Audibook English Characters had a very well done English accent. Edward or no Edward?
As with all of her books, A.J. Campbell grips me from the first page and doesn't let go until the thrilling end. THE WRONG KEY is much more than just a thriller as it explores the depths of a mother's love and how far she will go to protect her child.
London based auditor Steph is recently divorced, and when her company needs her in New York after her co-worker suffers an accident, Steph is eager to fill in. She and her teenage daughter Ellie both see the opportunity as a vacation before Ellie starts university. Sure enough, the women love the city, and each meets a prospective romantic partner pretty quickly. But Steph is growing uneasy as she investigates from transactions within her company. She's uncovered what she fears is a level of corruption that may go straight to the top. Before she can decide what to do, she suffers a devastating personal loss, and while still reeling from it, Ellie disappears. The people who have her make their message clear...stop investigating, or Ellie will die. Steph wrestles with her ethics, but one thing is clear: she's getting her daughter back one way or another, even if it kills her.
I was invested in the lives of these women immediately. The author captured the thrill of embarking on your own for the first time after a separation, but where her talent truly sparkled was describing the fierce love that a mother has for her child and the innate desire to protect that child at any cost. The plot was impeccably paced, and the red herrings were carefully placed. I had nothing figured out! When I realized what the title meant, I couldn't get over how clever it was!
Thank you so much to the author for my place on her ARC team and for sending me an early copy. THE WRONG KEY publishes January 12, 2023.
Once you buy this book, cancel any plans you have because you literally won’t want to put it down! Following the story of Steph and daughter Ellie as they move to New York when Steph is offered an opportunity at work, the author quickly sets the tone for the novel with a first chapter that immediately draws the reader in. Right from the beginning there are characters introduced whom you are not sure can be trusted. You are constantly questioning the motives of many of the characters whilst really hoping you are wrong! I found myself wide eyed and totally gripped at moments whilst I was reading this novel, and I finished it in two days. A throughly enjoyable read from this author who keeps coming up with great new stories. Try it, you won’t be disappointed.
I received an advance copy of this book in return for a review. Views are my own.
I have thoroughly enjoyed AJ Campbell’s previous books and this trumps the lot! A suspenseful psychological thriller, with fantastic pace, this was the book I ended 2022 with and what a belter it was!
Campbell writes exceptionally well - her pace is always spot on, red herrings cleverly intertwined. But where she truly excels is characterisation. Every book I’ve read by Campbell has me thoroughly invested in her characters - they’re jump off the page real. I feel their feels! And this one, cripes! I felt Steph’s need to get her daughter back. I could t keep away from this book, I needed to know!!!
Oh, and that moment when the book title makes sense… gold! GOLD!!!
Lovely touch with the Spotify playlist at the end too - of course I had a wee rummage on Spotify to have a listen.
If you enjoy suspenseful psychological thrillers with masterful characterisation, then grab yourself a copy!!!
Huge thanks to Campbell for having me on the book tour!
What a page turner. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. The suspense is slow building and then the story takes a huge mysterious turn. You never know who to trust or who to believe. Steph is the major character - an auditor with a big company in the UK who is sent to New York to work with a parent company to check that everything is on the up and up. She travels with her almost 18-year-old daughter Elie. On her first day in NY she meets a man who soon becomes her love interest. Her daughter also meets someone who quickly helps mend her broken heart and mother and daughter are very happy. Then disaster strikes. Steph finds that she has nowhere to turn, no one she can trust, and her lover has mysteriously died. Then her daughter goes missing. Is there a connection?? This is a story about betrayal and corruption and love and how they all tie together. There are many heart stopping moments, and the mystery of the wrong key is finally revealed and there is a big twist at the end. It's a wonderful story and I highly recommend it. 5 stars for sure.
A thriller twisted suspense well written story. That captures the reader from the Beginning. This one will keep you up late reading into the Night.
Steph and Ellies story. Mum and Daughter.
The perfect plot. The wrong 🔑 Key. a perfect Suspense Story. Steph and her daughter in NY City. Work is what takes mum there, but so much more happens. Coming from London. For a job temporarily. New York City. It's the place. Only for a few weeks. Feeling in for someone else. But filling in can be dangerous. This job is so much more than steph bargained for.
Another fabulous book by aj Campbell.. I absolutely love reading Books by this author.. The suspense is right there keeps you on the edge of your seat. Her books are absolutely awesome. Thank you AJ.... For another fabulous book...
Another page turner from AJ Campbell. Great plot, plenty of suspicious characters and lots of twists and turns. I particularly enjoyed the corporate intrigue and the dash of romance which isn’t usually my thing!
A great read!! I was on the edge of my seat for the entire book! Steph will do anything to protect her daughter Elle. Never a dull moment! Mystery, suspense, romance, A.J. Campbell brought all the feels for The Wrong Key. I can’t wait to read what's next!!
First of all, I'd like to say thank you to @ajcampbellauthor for sending me a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Oof. This was such a great read. From very early on, I was intrigued and thoroughly invested in this story, despite the fact that I know absolutely nothing about investments and banking and that whole world. Now, maybe it's because I read thrillers and horrors, but I have become very deeply distrusting, and the whole way through this, I was questioning every single person's motives. 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘳? 𝘏𝘦'𝘴 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘥. This was a fast-paced, gripping read and I really enjoyed it.
A.J. Campbell just took me on one crazy intense ride, which let's be real is true Campbell style. She never lets you down when it comes to thrills and a wonderful twisted read. I felt I was on a rollercoaster being jerked from side to side. Not knowing what the next page would bring, making me burn through the pages at breakneck speeds.
Steph is newly divorced, with a seventeen-year old-daughter. She is moving up in her company as an auditor. She is close with her boss and when he wants to send her to NYC to do some digging into some suspicious accounts. She decides this is just what her and her daughter needs. Steph and Ellie jump headfirst into their new lives. Each finding a new love interest as soon as they step off the plane. As Steph continues to dig and interview more people, people begin to quit or die. Is it all connected to Crayhome or is it just a coincidence?
I loved this book. I was at the edge of my seat and kept me guessing until the end. I was going in the wrong direction the entire book, and I was shocked at what the end unlocked. Thank you to A.J. Campbell for my copy of this thrilling book.
Steph Knight is sent from London to New York City to cover for an associate who was badly injured. Recently divorced, it’s the perfect opportunity for Steph and her teenage daughter Ellie (who is a talented musician). While in New York, both mother and daughter find a chance at love. Unfortunately, their newfound happiness is short-lived. Steph uncovers major discrepancies at work and when she brings it the attention of her supervisors, strange things start happening. Worst of all: Ellie seemingly disappears without a trace. Steph will stop at nothing to get her daughter back, even if it puts her entire world is shambles.
This was a clever and exciting thriller! The book was divided into two parts. Part I laid the groundwork for this story and developed the characters and build on their relationships. Part II was exciting and kept me turning pages quickly to see what was going to happen. The twists were unique and I love when I don’t guess what’s coming! I have never read any other books by this author but clearly I am missing out. I can’t wait to check out her back list. Thank you so much to AJ Campbell for reaching out and letting me be a part of your book blitz! “The Wrong Key” will be released on January 10th!
This review will be shared to my Instagram blog (@books_by_the_bottle) shortly 😊
Wow wow wow!! This is an amazing book. I couldn’t wait to get back to reading it. I love every second, lots of different outcomes going through my mind throughout and the next chapter I had changed my mind! An absolute pleasure to be able to read this before it was released. It’s defo an amazing book well worth a read. How you have these ideas are amazing but well done!! Can’t wait to read more from this author!
AJ Campbell is quickly becoming one of my favourite suspenseful psychological authors. Each book of hers is even better than the last and they are always the perfect length to devour in one sitting! This book was unputdownable; full of twists and turns that kept you guessing right up until the end. An action packed thriller with corruption, fear, betrayal and mystery.
Steph is on a work trip as an auditor in New York, with her 17-year-old daughter Ellie. They’re excited to spend the Summer in the big Apple and have plans to sightsee when Steph isn’t working. Her counterpart in New York, Melissa, had a car accident so Steph was asked to step in to temporarily until Melissa was fit enough to return. Her usual base in the U.K. have reason to believe that not everything is above board in the office across the pond and she sets out to investigate if there’s any evidence to substantiate those concerns.
Early on in Steph’s work trip, they both meet men who they become inseparable with and are shown the sights of New York over their first few weeks. Steph visits Melissa and is shocked to discover the car accident was by no means an accident and warns Steph to return to the U.K. or she may suffer a similar fate for delving too deep into certain accounts.
Steph no longer knows who she can trust and is paranoid something is out to get her. It all seems to go downhill from here…
These books just get better and better and all a standalone. This one is my favourite yet, it not only had me gripped and on the edge of my seat but practically falling off, and heart going ten to the dozen. It has a absolutely fabulous storyline, plot, great characters and wonderful descriptive.. Once you start reading it's impossible to put down, it has you totally glued. An absolutely wonderful read with revelations full of twists leading to that final outcome. My thanks to the Author for the advanced copy, this is my honest unbiased review.
A.J Campbell smashes it out of the park again with another great action thriller. With plenty of twists and turns to keep you hooked, you’ll be needing to find out what happens!
A brilliant thriller leaving you feeling a kaleidoscope of emotions! 😍🤯
WHAT A READ! With corruption, romance and deception at its core, this read was incredibly unpredictable and engaging. This book was an easy read and Campbell’s writing style is well articulated and emits an almost poetic quality that flows throughout.🔥
I really loved the fast pace opening chapter which gives you a small glimpse into what’s to come for Steph and Ellie whilst on their summer trip in New York. The read then cuts back to beforehand, focussing on the whirlwind romances that the mother and daughter duo are enthralled into upon their arrival to the States. The contrast was perfect, as I loved reading about their perfect time, knowing full well that disaster was looming.
The characters were well fleshed and very likeable. I always love a read that features a protective mum and a teenager who likes to explore. I thought Steph was down to earth and motivated. I also loved Edward and Jack who were exemplary boyfriends, and you could tell that Steph and Ellie were besotted.
The cleverly intricate plot made me constantly second guess, alongside Steph, about what was going on and who could be trusted in this read. This plot and the switch between Steph’s and Ellie’s POV after the kidnapping in the later half of this book made a very enjoyable read.
I was wondering throughout how the title was in any way connected to this book, and trust me, Campbell definitely delivered when you realise how. I really enjoyed this read and even the final chapter served a little unforeseen twist. 🥳
If you’re looking for a gripping thriller to add to your January TBR and to keep you up late reading, look no further and grab The Wrong Key published 12th January 23!
Many thanks to AJ Campbell for providing me with this excellent ARC. I cannot wait to explore more of Campbell’s work. 😍
l am definitely on a thriller kick and this one was incredible! The Wrong Key was well written, the characters were relatable and I genuinely liked them, especially Steph and Ellie. I could not put the book down, especially towards the end.
The fast paced book is about a divorced mother named Steph who is from London, she travels to NYC with her daughter, Ellie, for work. She is an auditor and is assigned a case to investigate. Personally, Steph meets a nice man named Edward in her building and starts a friendship/ relationship with him, while her daughter Ellie, meets a bartender named Jack. Professionally, Steph is trying to investigate her case but the former case worker tells her someone tried to kill her and then disappears. Slowly she starts wondering who she can and cannot trust at work. One day, a tragedy happens and soon after Steph finds out her daughter is missing. She goes to great lengths to find her daughter.
This book has a bit of everything, romance, corporate greed and corruption, and lies. Every time I thought I knew what was going on, I was wrong! The twists and turns were unexpected. loved how the ending tied everything up. Great thriller to read!
I can't wait to read more of AJ Campbell's books! Thank you to @ajcampbellauthor for inviting me to join her #bookblitz I truly enioved it!
Thank you to AJ Campbell and Code Grey Publishing for a gifted copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Just loved it. I wasnt gripped for the start - but give it a bit and it sucks you in. There were so many twists and turns and the suspense - who was responsible, why was she sent to New York, who can be trusted. The relationship between the mother and daughter was interesting - not sure if I could be as open with my 17 year old in a new place. As an ex-auditor and an accountant I recognised some of the traits described - which my family laugh at.
This kept me going late into the night as had to keep reading. So glad found this author, really recommend.
I was given an advance copy by the author but the review is entirely my own.
This is an incredible read, I couldn't put it down and I read it in a couple of sittings. It is a fast paced and absolutely gripping read that grabbed me right from the start and didn't let me go. The characters are all well developed and incredibly believable and the twists and plot tension left me not knowing what to think or who to believe. If you love thriller/crime books then you need to make this author a new favourite. This was my first book by this author and I cannot wait to read more. I loved it
Thank to the author for sending this arc to me ! This book was great, my first suspenseful thriller of the year and it was sooo good ! The plot of this book was great, it got my attention within the first chapter. So many twist and turns. This was the first book by this author but won't be my last !
