How can you have a ghost story without a ghost? What if the ghost is only in your head? How would you know that you aren't losing your mind?
By medical standards, sixteen-year-old Janine Palmer dies on the day of her automobile accident. When her spirit travels to the "other side," however, she is told that it isn't her time to die, and is sent back to live out her life. When she awakens from her coma, though, she discovers that she hasn't come back alone. There is someone else inside her mind. The voice in Janine's head claims to be the ghost of Lenore, Janine's twin sister, who drowned twelve years earlier. Lenore blames her own death on Janine and is determined to live again in her sister's body.
Now the two girls must vie for one body. Can Janine be sure that her twin is really inside her, or is she simply going crazy?

Well I read this book last summer and I loved it! One of the best books I ever read and one of the first books I ever finished. The reason I loved this book is because it is about this girl and she has a twin sister and this twin sister turns out to be dead. The sister just lives her life though. She never really remembered her sister. So one day at school her boyfriend tell her lets go to the beach and what I recall is it was raining. So the girl says yes anyway. They go out and they end up being in a car accident because one car swereved out of place at his stop light, for he was on his phone and he hits their car. They end up being in the hospital and the girl ends up dying and coming back to life. Except when she dies she sees her sister in heaven and her sister said everything is her fault. She died because of her. Then when she comes back to life her sister ends up being in her head, tanting her tormenting her. This book is really really good! I perfer you too read it! At the end of the book it is very trippy. The reason I also love it is because I love the mystery and the romance and how she makes her cheat and things like that. It is a must read!
This was an okay read. I had a good time but it didn’t blow my socks off, you know? I’ve been trying to go through my physical TBR and came across this book that I bought years and years ago and obviously I no longer have the same taste as middle/high school me.
The story starts out with Janine Palmer basically getting into a car crash and borderline dying, only to be revived and able to carry on with her life. Although, when she was on the other side, her twin sister who drowned when they were children, Lenore, comes back to life with her.
The story didn’t really have a whole lot of plot, it was very character based and don’t get me wrong that will never stir me away from a book because I do enjoy that writing style, but basically the way it was written made it very boring to me because we just get a bunch of in-her-head conversations with Janine and Lenore about parents, activities, and boys. Oh, wow, is there a lot of boys, basically just boys boys boys.
I didn’t hate it, but it didn’t really grasp my attention. It was also a super short read so I only had to spend 1.5hrs reading.
It definitely had some fun aspects! I love reading about paranormal stuff and I thought Janine was an interesting character!
The plot twist at the end unfortunately didn’t get me because I guessed it, but, it was still definitely interesting!!
If you are looking for a fun & quick read, I’d say give this a go! But if you’re looking for something more along the lines of this-is-keeping-me-on-the-edge-of-my-seat-and-can’t-put-it-down-because-it’s-so-mind-blowing, I’d keep looking.
I remembered reading this when I was much younger (probably 10 or 11) but I couldn’t recall any details. Picked it up on my friend’s bookshelf and read it before bed every night :) * spoilers begin * One thing I LOVED about this is how the doctor explained the reason personalities might fragment (speaking about DID, when Janine tells her about Lenore being inside her head). I thought the way Littke managed to explain that simply to a younger-age group of readers was awesome. I was unclear on how old Janine was in the book (forgive me if I missed it). She goes out with Rafe and Scott, who can drive, but she doesn’t appear to have her permit yet (Mom says she isn’t certified to drive alone yet). I was floating a little in this question. The only other thing I have to comment is about the ending. When Janine finally figures out the reason Lenore has surfaced inside her, her parents confirm it’s true! WHAT THE HECK, PARENTS?! Keeping a MAJOR secret like that from your daughter for HOW many years?! Did they not think it would eventually surface? And how in the meantime did they process any legal forms for “Janine”?! Whose ID did they use? Were the twins really so identical that even their IDs could have been swapped?! I really enjoyed my second read of this. Great book, easy reading for older crowds, very much recommended!

The author’s purpose for writing this book I believe was to entertain the readers, and to also let the readers know that there are ghost and that there is another life after the one we live now. This book, I think would have an impact on the reader because at the end of the book you just get that big surprise, which you never expected. You’re just like “WOW, are you serious”? But, I don’t think it will have a lasting value on the reader. For example, I just wonder now can this really all happen in real life where someone can experience someone else talking to them in their mind? Someone else that has passed on to the other world.
In my opinion the book is well written. The book doesn’t have any slang and is well written where any reader can understand what the author has written. I think a 5th grader could read this book and would understand every word. I know a 5th grader could understand “Dad. That time we all went to Idaho. That was when Lenore died, wasn’t it? Yes. But you wouldn’t remember that that, either. You were only four” (Littke 68). This book was so captivating. Once you start to read it you want to finish it that same day! I couldn’t relate to any of the characters, because I never experienced any paranormal activities or nothing like that. I did not find this book boring; I found this book to be fun and entertaining. This book is filled with so much mystery, secrets, and drama! Especially towards the end when you get that big surprise that you don’t expect.
The greatest strength of this book I would say is that, the author knows how to catch the reader’s attention and keep the reader entertained. There is not one boring moment in the book. Which I think is a big thumbs up because not a lot of authors know how to that. A weakness this book has, I would say is the ending of the book. It leaves you hanging? Like, what? That’s it?! I really wanted to see a happy ending. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend, because it just has everything like mystery and secrets! Before telling them to read this book I would tell them to read this quote from the inside of the cover “Janine Palmer dies on the day of her automobile accident. But she wakes from her coma, and discovers that something is terribly wrong. Now she is haunted by a voice, a voice claiming to be her twin sister, Lenore who drowned as a child” (Littke).
I read this book when I was about 11/12 years old and it has stuck with me since, I FINALLY found a copy to re-read a few weeks ago, and I’m not disappointed. Its an easy read. Reads a tad young, but I expected that. I would still recommend it if you like a book with a little twist.
I read this wayyyy back when I was probably in elementary school and have been dying for ages to find it so I can mark it off as “Read” - I’m glad I finally found the title! It kept me up at night cuz I kept trying to figure out the mystery of what was happening lol
I can't believe I found this book on Goodreads. LOL. I read this EONS ago back before high school. This was a book that took FOREVER to come back into stock at my school library. Other girls were always checking it out and I wanted to know what they were talking about, so I waited and waited and it finally came in. I remember this being about Janine and Lenore. When they were little, Lenore drowned and Janine was a witness, so that was traumatic enough. Then, it gets weirder when 12 years later, Janine is in a car accident. She survives, but with Lenore clinging to her (so to speak). The rest of the book is the two girls fighting for control of one body.
This book was a wild ride for a an almost high school student. It had some language that I wasn't used to and it read like it was for a more mature reader at the time. I still wouldn't quite classify it as YA at this point, but it was such an interesting read. I never forgot about it.
If you ever find a copy of it, I recommend it for a mindless, fun read.
I am reading a book called Haunted Sisters, the author is Lael Littke. This book is about a fifteen year old girl that had got into a car accident with a boy named scott, she had died on that day but wakes from her coma. When she was dead she saw her twin sister that had drowned in a pond. Now she is haunted by her voice now they are in the same body.
There is this one part that was very dramatic and affected me by thinking that everything was going back to normal. Cause lanore was gonna crash and janine thought everything was going back to normal but there little siblings were in the car so she grabbed the wheel and swerved into the ditch. I recommend this book if you like mysterious and kinda scary books.
So like my favorite part is like the part when i finally figured out that her name isn't even janine it is lanore. I didn’t like how it took so long at the end for her to tell her mom and dad about them in the same body!!!!!!.
I'm not sure what I thought about this one. It's a weird paranormal story, but was also kind of interesting and might turn out just being a girl who is bi-polar. One of my kid's English teachers recommended this one, but it was just okay for me. Too much romance and girly stuff for middle grade - probably more Young Adult.
This is a really good read if your at a point in life where you have no idea what genre of book to read. This book is a mix of drama, thriller, and romance. If you're a fan of plot twists then this is your book! I hope this review helped!
I read this book in middle school and have never been able to forget it i am 26 now and am just now finding it again after forgetting the name!! I love this book and can't wait to reread it!!
Janine and Lenore are twins with very different personalities: Janine, always the "good one" and Lenore, always in trouble. Twelve years ago, Lenore drown in an accident with Janine near by. Janine has lived with the guilt ever since.
Now, Janine is in high school. She and her friend, Scott, decide to skip class and head for the beach. It's not what Janine would normally do, so she and Scott call her "Lenore." But they are in a serious car accident instead and when Janine comes to, she discovers that Lenore has taken up residence in her head. Before long, Lenore is starting to take control of her thoughts and actions.
This book is called “Haunted Sister” and the author is Lael Littke. The lixil level is . This book is about a 16 year old Janine who dies and her spirit travels to this place, but sends her back to live. Now her twin that has passed away when they were 4 years old is stuck inside her head. What happens next? Janine got in an automobile accident and died. Her twin Lenore died when they were 4 years old. Janine found out after she awoke from her coma, that she is there within her. She can become over powerful and control what Janine does, like actions and talking. Lenore gets Janine in lots of trouble. Then later Janine actually finds out that she is Lenore. In my opinion this is a very good book but at a very low level, which I knew but I didn’t have time to get a different book.

This isn't written well. At all. I feel like this story could have been so, so much more. The story is so different from anything I've ever read. I liked the relationship between Janine and Scott. I liked Rafe's part in things. But it wasn't believable in any sense. What Mother isn't concerned when her teenage daughter wants to be called by her dead twins name? Uh, that's not normal and I don't care what anyone says. Nope, no dead twin, no alive twin, nothing like that in my world but I can still say with 100% certainly that it is NOT normal. I totally didn't get the end. I still don't understand what the hell happened to be honest. The writing was very..... topical if that makes sense. That's the word that comes to mind. There was nothing underneath it. There was no depth. It was all cut and dry and not believable. That doesn't work for a story like this, one that centers around family and relationships. This author is a teacher at Pasadena City College and UCLA. Remind me never to go there will you? Miss this one - you won't miss anything.
This book was interesting. While I figured out the ending, not the why it happened. I wasn't sure if I agreed with the actions of the parents or if I think a four year old would react as she did; although, it was a very traumatic event. I thought it could have explored the issue of good verses bad. It seemed to say that risk-taking is bad; I disagree. I also disagree that Lenore would have acted so rebelliously as a teen because she was a little adventurous as a child. I have had kids and think that some kids settle as they get older and learn more control--it's a far cry from four-year-old actions to stealing jewelry and making out with strangers as a teen. I think we all have to take risks in our lives and learn by doing. The book seemed to propose that your life is dictated by your personality and choices at four, a time most of us don't remember. I disagree with that notion. We can make choices, especially as we age and learn. I do like that the parents tried to help the Janine, but I think they accommodated her too much.
This is a short, but interesting book for YA-Juvenile. Janine is in a terrible accident in which she receives a severe concussion and dies on the operating table. She goes into a nebulous state in which she sees people relatives who have died including her identical twin, Lenore, who died when she was 4. Janine is encouraged to come back to earth and when she does, she finds that her twin sister comes with her. When she wakes up, she finds that Lenore, the "bad" twin is talking to her and she wants to participate in the life she feels she has been robbed of. The situation is very much like a person with multiple personality disorder. Once Lenore manages to get out, she attempts to gain more control and causes Janine a number of problems.
The story line is very good and it is well developed. The characters are believable and the conclusion is well thought out. I think it could have been longer, but since it is for the early young adult group, it is probably the right length.
What I learned from this book is that sometimes when things go wrong so can people. When Jenean gets in the accident after skipping school, she ended up in the hospital. Thinking she's going crazy as she hears a voice inside her head, I discovered throughout the book that Jenean has a twin sister that died when she was four years young. Her twin sister had died from drowning in her mothers bird bath. But it turns out That Jenean was not Jenean. She was her twin sister. Her and her sister had shirts that had Their names on them so their mother could tell them apart. So when "Jenean" dorwned her sister, she switched shirts.
This book made me think deeply in some parts. When it finnaly described that she was really her sister, I was extremely surprised. This would be one my favorite books.
I have the weird experience of not actually knowing if I've read this one before. I think I have, as parts of it seemed very familiar, and it's exactly the type of book I'd have gotten out when perusing the YA shelves of the library when I was a teen, but there were too many unfamiliar things it in too, so I can't say for sure if I'm not just confusing it with one of the many similar books.
Anyway, as you can see from the rating I wasn't too impressed. It's one of those books that started out well but ended much too abruptly. I'd like to have seen another 10-20 pages to tie up the last threads. It was a quick read though - only took me about an hour to read.
I love this book just because it is one I have read about a dozen or more times. I found this book maybe ten or more years ago in a box in our basement and fell in love with it. I haven't read it for quite some time now, but I remembered why I loved it. I have always been intrigued with the thought of two people sharing bodies, but I never thought one would be a ghost of sister's past. I wish this one would've been longer. I would've liked to have spent more time with Janine and Lenore. If you're looking for a good, short book as a quick read then you should consider this one. I will be reading it for many years to come.
"Haunted Sister" written by Lael Littke has219 pages. This horror book is more of a creepy book, than scary. I liked the idea that her dead twin sister had invaded her body and started controlling her life. i liked the manner in which it was written, but by the end the book i felt started getting a bit repetitive and boring. Still, the book was a good book to read, it makes you feel like you'r inside their heads, viewing life from their eyes rather than just through the lines. I am curious to read more books of simular plots, or from Lael Littke.
This is a very addicting book with the most AMAZING ending ever.
This is a book about a girl named Janine who dies in a car accident. She then goes over to the 'other world' only to find out she should still live. She goes back only to find that her dead twin was now living inside her head.
Some things I had noticed throughout the book was that surprises just kept coming non-stop. It was also very addicting and descriptive and I felt as if I was there with all the characters. Overall, this was a great book and I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes suspenseful books.
This was one of the first "Adult novels" I read as a child. I read this when I was about ten, and I was obsessed with it. I remember reading it cover to cover in a couple of hours, and then instantly started reading it again. I remember it scared me a little, but was such an interesting storyline that my ten-year-old self could not put it down! I have been meaning to read this again, but could not for the life of me remember the name of the book! Now that I finally found it, I will re-read it :)! Then... I will update with an adult review on the book that I remember so fondly!
This book had to be hard to write. The subject matter is very common to the Mystery/ Horror genera. This book was not a real good read to me. Others are way better, see Regina's Song by the late David Eddings. The twin mystical or haunted angle has been done so many times it would be hard to do a book like this well. I love Littke's other books, but this one in no way measured up to her other works.
This book is a really good book!I Really like the part where Janine finds out that she is really Lenore and the death of the her twin sister was really her own fault so she took the place as Janine so she would not be the one getting into trouble.
This book is made me cry. If you are to good for crying over a book I recommend you don't read it OR read the ending (last 40 pages or so) AT HOME!!!
